It's not terribly often that we have news to report coming out ahead of the Minneapolis Auto Show. We say that not to disparage the Twin Cities, which are lovely, but new product reveals are few and far between for the show. This year, however, it seems that event will play host to the debut of a rather special limited edition Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X. Though not coming directly from the Mitsu factory, we think the 311RS shows loads of potential for Evo fanatics.

The 311RS is the brainchild of circuit racer Ryan Gates, who has apparently spent the last three years developing what he believes is an Evo perfect for both racing and road driving. Starting life as a bog-standard Evo X, the Gates team has swapped out the factory intake, intercooler and exhaust system for more potent AMS pieces; resulting in output figures of 353 horsepower and nearly 359 pound-feet of torque. A new suspension from JRZ, brakes from Girodisc and 18-inch custom Rays wheels shod with high-performance Nitto tires represent significant updates to the underpinnings, as well.

Of course, the 311RS is also rocking a full body kit, too, with a more aggressive front air dam and a subtle lip added on to the stock rear wing. The blue and white racing livery, with matching blue wheels, looks racy without being too childish, we think.

Just 11 examples of the 311RS will be offered for sale, with the first car going to leading dealer White Bear Mitsubishi in White Bear Lake, MN. We're told that the car will retail for $49,000; that's a big jump over the roughly $35K price tag of a base GSR, but a much smaller one over the $46k tag on a fully loaded MR. Find more complete information about the 311RS, in the press release information, below. You'll also find a video on the "making of" a longer 311RS film (which hasn't been released yet), as well. Enjoy.
Continue reading Limited-edition Mitsubishi 311RS Evo X coming to Minneapolis Auto Show [w/video]

Limited-edition Mitsubishi 311RS Evo X coming to Minneapolis Auto Show [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 08 Mar 2013 14:57:00 EST.
Caution: Slippery when wet.

Generally speaking, such signs are placed where pedestrians may be crossing on hard-surface flooring, perhaps right after it was washed. But the same is sometimes true on asphalt, and the four tires of the Mitsubishi Evo seen after the break are just as susceptible to slipping and sliding as the bottom of your shoes.

Slipping on a floor usually sends you toppling over in an embarrassing heap. Sliding off the side of a grimy road during a rally race can have much, much more serious consequences. Scroll down below for a trio of videos from both inside and outside the car to see how one driver dealt with his car's lack of grip in a most impressive way.
Continue reading Watch what may be the world's best save during a Polish rally race

Watch what may be the world's best save during a Polish rally race originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 14 Aug 2012 20:01:00 EST.
You've seen plenty of motorcycle-versus-car contests that take place on public roads or dedicated race tracks. But you've probably never seen one where the two machines are wearing Blizzaks... or even studded tires.

French motorcycle publication Moto Journal has decided to turn the two-wheeled contingent on its head by moving the battleground to the frozen stretches of Lapland on a replica race track of Le Castellet, also known as Circuit Paul Ricard, cut through the snow and ice. In the first round, a Porsche 911 GT3 RS goes up against a 1,000cc Yamaha R1. Up next is a Mitsubishi EVO IX against a Yamaha WR450F. Yes, this is going to be good.

If the idea of watching an R1 hit 160 miles per hour on the ice isn't enough to make you watch, perhaps we should mention that its rider is donning an Evel-Knievel-style cape, and that this appears to be just a teaser of a longer video or possibly even a series. Enough talking already. Check out the video in its entirety below.
Continue reading Such A Tease: Watch a Porsche 911 GT3 RS take on a Yamaha R1... on ice

Such A Tease: Watch a Porsche 911 GT3 RS take on a Yamaha R1... on ice originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 12 Mar 2012 20:00:00 EST. Kym Illman's Mitsubishi Evo misses a turn - Click above to watch video after the jump

Apparently, "left four and a half after crest" is code for 'hold on tight!'

Kym Illman and co-driver Kirrilee Gentleman were cruising along a late stage of the 2011 Targa Tasmania. Their Mitsubishi Evo IX was running well and Gentleman was shouting out the guidance so Illman could keep pushing. Apparently, however, the pair got mixed up on one crucial route point - a slow left immediately following a fast straight with a crest at the end.

As Gentleman tried to point out the rapidly approaching "left 4.5 after crest," Illman was trying to clarify what he heard. They didn't have time for that, however, because the car went light over the crest while traveling approximately 190 kilometers per hour (118 miles per hour). Again, left four and a half after crest!

"LEFT FOUR AND A HALF AFTER CREST!"

Brakes don't work too well in this particular situation, so the Evo flew right through the turn, and wound up in the Tasmanian countryside.

"Sorry."

Thankfully, neither driver or co-driver were hurt. The video cameras were rolling, providing footage from two angles. The first angle shows us Kym and Kirrilee's vantage point while the second reveals just how violently the jolt shock the co-driver. Illman was wearing a HANS device while Gentleman, sadly, was not. Click past the jump to see the clip.
Supply Stiggy with a proper car, let him loose, and the result will be ruined tires, smoke and many cheering fans. Is it that easy if the car being used is a London Taxi?

It is when beneath the glossy black people-mover body sits a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. The result is far better than the Cash Cab, and we think the Stig agrees. Click past the jump to watch two clips of the Evo taxi in action. Thanks to all for the tips.
Speculation surrounding the Mitsubishi Evolution has reached a fever pitch over the last few days. Has the Lancer Evolution reached the end of the line? Is Mitsubishi going to produce a new version that utilizes a hybrid powertrain? We don't have an answer, but we do know that fans of the Evo are scared. The object of their affection has potentially met its demise. In an effort to show how much the car would be missed, a group of Evo-lovers have banded together to show support for the car they so-admire.

The title reads "Mitsubishi, Keep the Evo Alive" and it's for an online petition to show the tri-diamond automaker how much its sports sedan will be missed. If you want to join in and show support, head over to the site and join the cause. If you prefer the dirt-drift action of a Subaru, then lean back in your chair, don't click anything and cackle wildly.

According to Gayu Eusegi, head of global product development for Mitsubishi, the Lancer Evolution X will be the last Evo the Japanese automaker ever builds. Eusegi says the move is part of a shift in strategy to put the company's product focus and ethos on leadership in EV technology.

To that end, Autocar indicates that Mitsubishi will release eight fully-electric or hybrid-electric cars by the time 2015 rolls around, and make a grab for a big portion of the CO2-reduction market share. It goes without saying that the fun-yet-fuel-swilling Evo just doesn't fit that mindset, particularly since it apes a rally car that no longer exists.

Despite the Evo's huge popularity, Mitsubishi apparently isn't scared of the step and says it's confident that consumers will glom on to the idea and rally behind the brand. By killing the Evo, they're making their intentions plain to an increasingly environmentally-conscious car-buying public.

Eusegi killed dead any notion that the brand would roll out a performance-oriented hybrid as well. "Maybe the world can change, and maybe someday we can do a motor race by electric vehicles. Maybe then we can enter the market agian," he said.

This report of the Evo's death would seem to stand in contrast to multiple reports that an Evo XI is in the works with a hybrid drivetrain. We're taking this latest Autocar missive with a few grains of salt, as we can see how Eusegi may have simply meant that an Evo that relies exclusively on internal combustion is dead - a hybrid Evo would seem to offer a nice technological bridge to Mitsubishi's more electrically minded future. Hat tip to Dennis!

Mitsubishi has modestly warmed over its already hot Lancer Evolution for 2011. For the new model year, buyers can look forward to a host of styling and tech treats. As in the past, the rally heathen will be available in both GSR and MR trims, but the Japanese automaker is throwing in the company's new FUSE system for handling calls via Bluetooth and integrating music players. Even better, those gadgets should be controllable by voice command. In addition, the Lancer Evolution will now ship with a real-time traffic system when equipped with navigation. But let's be honest, no one is buying the Evolution for the infotainment.

Fortunately, Mitsubishi has also thrown in a few other changes for 2011, including a re-tuned exhaust system. The company isn't saying whether or not the new pipes add any horsepower to the equation, but the press release does indicate that the car now has a more throaty bark. In addition, Mitsu has effected some subtle aero tweaks. In shoutier GSR trim, that continues to mean one very large, very high-profile wing (now with slightly tweaked uprights), while MR continues to make use of a more subtle lip spoiler. Hit the jump for the press release and check out the gallery below.

2010 Subaru Impreza WRX STI Special Edition - Click above for high-res image gallery

Rumblings about a diesel-powered Subaru WRX STI first surfaced more than two years ago, and now they're back. The realities of meeting CO2 emissions limits in Europe and elsewhere may have increased the likelihood of a high-performance diesel Subaru, and an oil-burning STI would probably generate at least 200 horsepower and well over 300 pound-feet of torque, suggests Autocar. According to the UK rumor-traffickers, gasoline engines will almost certainly remain in the mix, albeit with reduced displacement. A new engine based on the 1.5-liter boxer in the base Impreza could offer suitable power if mixed with other technologies like direct injection. Even if Subaru does indeed develop a diesel STI, there's no guarantee that such a model would ever make it to North America.

Of course, the WRX doesn't live in a vacuum. Its longtime rival, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo may also ditch the spark plugs and also add a hybrid system. Earlier plans for a gas hybrid were reportedly canceled in favor of the diesel. The plan is to retain the Evo's sophisticated all-wheel-drive for acceleration to 60 mph in under five seconds and CO2 emissions below 200 grams per kilometer. Thanks to everyone for the tips!

Rumors that the 2013 Mitsubishi Evolution XI will come with a hybrid powertrain aren't new. In fact, we first heard such rumblings way back in October of 2009 when the Japanese automaker unleashed its PX-MiEV concept, which is also rumored to have received the green light for production using the same platform as the Evo, at the Tokyo Motor Show. But Motor Trend has a few more intriguing details to share, starting with the fact that it will boast a plug and a short-distance EV mode that won't ever activate the gasoline-fueled engine.

If MT is correct, a powerful electric motor would drive the front wheels of the Evo XI, drawing power from a lithium ion battery pack, while the (presumably turbocharged but possibly normally aspirated) 2.0-liter engine would drive the rear wheels only when necessary. The two combined powerplants could theoretically put out as much as 350 horsepower (or more, depending on final specifications) to all four wheels, catapulting the car from 0 to 60 in just 4.5 seconds.

Finally, the Evo would reportedly be blessed with the Active Steering and Roll Control Suspension that Mitsubishi has been working on getting into production since 2006, as well as a new electronically-controlled Active Yaw Control system for the engine-driven rear wheels. Sounds like a lot of technology, which could potentially equal lots of weight and a hefty sticker price. Stay tuned. Thanks for the tip, Jim!

Potential corrosion of the front impact airbag sensor has prompted the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to recall up to 29,353 2008-2009 Mitsubishi Lancer and Lancer Evolution models. NHTSA is concerned that long-term exposure to a mixture of melted snow and salt thrown up by other vehicles on the road may cause the wintery mixture to adhere to the front impact sensor and lead to corrosion over time. In the event of an accident or collision, a damaged sensor may short-circuit and delay airbag deployment possibly causing driver or passenger injury. The recall is currently limited to states where heavy road salt is used in the winter (i.e., Connecticut, New York, Wisconsin, etc...).

Mitsubishi dealers have been instructed to replace the airbag sensors with a redesigned model with improved corrosion resistance. Of course, the service will be performed at no charge. While the safety recall isn't scheduled to begin until November 27, 2009, owners may contact Mitsubishi Customer Relations at 888-648-7820, contact NHTSA's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236, or visit NHTSA on the Internet at www.safercar.gov. Full press release after the jump.
Autoblog reader Corey Baines laughed and told us this video was lame. While Baines won't be winning an Oscar his short film's production values, it stands as one of if not the only glimpse we've had of the production Mitsubishi EVO X on public roads being tested. Baines came across the car while driving around one day, and after confirming the boss was away for the day, hit the street to track down the EVO X mule with camera in hand. Not only was Baines able to follow the car and get some decent enough footage of it being driven on public roads, afterwards he approached its drivers in a parking lot who were very tight-lipped and made a hasty exit. While it's difficult to glean new info about the car from the video, one thing that's obvious is the giant rear wing out back that appears to be slightly bowed on the new EVO.

Follow the jump for the full video, which is the tastiest morsel of EVO X news we've had all year.

Thanks for vid, Corey Baines!
Continue reading VIDEO: Autoblog reader runs down Mitsubishi EVO X mule on public roads

VIDEO: Autoblog reader runs down Mitsubishi EVO X mule on public roads originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 15 Mar 2007 03:31:00 EST. That model would be the legendary EVO, and while we're still not privy to its production version yet, Mitsubishi will be bringing this Prototype X Concept to the North American International Auto Show in Detroit to wet our appetites. It looks hot and not at all unlike the various EVO-inspired concepts Mitsubishi has shown us the past year, including the Concept X and the Concept Sportback. The Prototype X even has the exact same three-vent hood of the Concept X, as well as a similar front fascia and rear diffuser. We're betting the Prototype X is a pretty clear indication of what the production version of the next generation EVO will be, which judging from the sketches is just fine with us.

Check out a rear shot after the jump.

[Source: Mitsubishi]

Continue reading Mitsubishi Prototype X Concept previews next gen Lancer EVO

Mitsubishi Prototype X Concept previews next gen Lancer EVO originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 15 Dec 2006 14:17:00 EST. Our sources tell us that Mitsubishi doesn't have a shot in hell of keeping this thing secret until then, and this morning we find that the Lancer may already be out of the bag. Pics of what appears to be the all new Lancer have shown up on a Russian website, and while we can't verify whether or not the shots are official or well done Photoshop fakes, they do look convincing. Just to make sure we would read the release, the automaker also included a design sketch of the Lancer. We've all seen spy shots of the new Lancer and reaction to the new car's design has met with much approval so far. The sketch released by Mitsubishi is infused with a bit of hyperbole from the designer's pen, as we expect the producton car to have things like door handles and windshield wipers, along with with wheels less than 20 inches in diameter. Still, news of the new Lancer always brightens up our day as it's a car that many have been waiting patiently a long time to arrive.

Mitsubishi does give up a few deets about the car in its press release, saying that it will be launched in the spring starting with the North American market. It's global engine lineup will range from a 1.5-liter base engine for Europe to the Lancer EVO's powerful turbo four. Europe will also get a diesel engine and the release seems to imply a Ralliart model may get a detuned version of the EVO's 2.0-liter turbo, although that may be us filling in a bit too many blanks.

Enjoy the sketch for now, as we'll get plenty of pics and video of the new Lancer when it debuts in Detroit. Check out Mitsubishi's press release after the jump, as well.

[Source: Mitsubishi]
Continue reading Mitsubishi releases design sketch of Detroit-bound Lancer

Mitsubishi releases design sketch of Detroit-bound Lancer originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 10 Nov 2006 11:32:00 EST. The Evolution SE will ride the line out in style with red-stitched Recaro seats inside the cabin and a host of exterior enhancements. The Evolution SE gets a new airdam extension up front that reduces front end lift and the same lightweight aluminum roof worn by the Evolution RS and MR. It rolls on 17-inch forged BBS wheels with a diamond black finish and illuminates the road ahead with a set of HID headlights. The price of the Evolution SE will start at $33,249, which places it neatly above the standard Evo IX and below the range-topping MR.

(Mitsubishi's full press release can be found after the jump)

[Source: Mitsubishi]
Continue reading Final flight of the Evo IX - 2006 Lancer Evolution SE

Final flight of the Evo IX - 2006 Lancer Evolution SE originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 03 Aug 2006 09:55:00 EST. News has been slow to come by, but yesterday Dubspeed Driven scored some outstanding spy shots of what might be the EVO X. One can see a clear inspiration from the Concept-X show car that Mitsubishi rolled out at the 2005 Tokyo Motor Show in the shape of the headlights and vertically flat front end.

The next Lancer Evolution will come to market as a 2008 model and be based on the same GS platform used by the Dodge Caliber. It certainly appears to be a much beefier sedan than the tiny Lancer it's replacing, although rumors suggest that it will be lighter than the current Lancer Evolution and have more than 300 horsepower under the hood.

As incredible as this car promises to be, how many think it will save Mitsubishi's slumping sales in the U.S.? One could make the argument that the EVO X is the perfect halo car, as its lineage with the Lancer will be very visible and could do wonders for increasing that car's street cred. For those that don't want EVO amounts of power, there should also be the Ralliart and OZ Rally Edition models. In fact, Dubspeed Driven's editor notes that these shots may actually be of the Ralliart model, but we'd like to keep believing they're not.

[Source: Dubspeed Driven via Winding Road]
Spy Shots: Mitsubishi EVO X originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 11 Jul 2006 13:28:00 EST.
