LA Synced Traffic Signals

Los Angeles is moving forward with a plan to ease traffic congestion by synchronizing all of the city's 4,398 stoplights. While smaller municipalities have followed similar plans in the past, LA is the first major city to take a stab at getting all of its lights to play nice together. If it works, the new system could increase average traffic speeds by 16 percent and reduce travel times by 12 percent. We imaging reducing the amount of time cars spend idling at a stop light should help reduce fuel consumption by a decent margin as well.

LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has said the move will reduce the city's carbon emissions by one metric ton while saving drivers one day of waiting in traffic at the same time. The system can also be utilized by emergency responders to reduce response times for ambulances and fire trucks. You can watch a local news report on the switchover below.

2013 Toyota RAV4

Toyota just unveiled the 2013 RAV4 at the 2012 LA Auto Show, and according to a report in Ward's Auto, the automaker already has high hopes for strong sales of its new model. Bill Fay, Toyota's vice president of marketing, is expecting sales of 200,000 units in 2013 - a jump over the projected 170,000 RAV4 models expected to be delivered in 2012.

Since 2008, the RAV4 has never sold anything close to 200,000 units; the model's best year in recent times was 2010 when 170,877 models were moved. But with this all-new 2013 model, Toyota is hoping to capture a larger chunk of younger buyers - folks who might normally look at the Ford Escape and Mazda CX-5.

"It has an awful lot of capability for the younger buyer, so we're hoping to get a little more share of that," Fay told Ward's Auto.

In addition to completely new styling and better refinement, the RAV4 loses its V6 option for 2013. The only engine offered will be Toyota's 2.5-liter inline-four, good for 176 horsepower and 172 pound-feet of torque, and able to achieve highway fuel economy as high as 31 miles per gallon when paired with front-wheel drive.

The 2013 RAV4 hits dealerships in January. Pricing will be announced closer to the vehicle's on-sale date.

With Steve Saleen back at the helm of his namesake automaker, another recognizable name is reappearing in the Saleen sports car lineup. As previewed by the above rendering at the LA Auto Show, the Saleen 351 returns after a 13-year absence with 700 horsepower under the hood - take that Shelby GT500.

That much horsepower is brought to you by a 351-cubic-inch (hence the name) supercharged V8 that also pumps out 655 pound-feet of torque. Power is laid down through a six-speed manual gearbox with a performance clutch and a 3.73 rear axle ratio. The brakes have been upgraded with 15-inch disks for improved stopping performance, too.

For styling, Saleen gave the car carbon fiber front and rear splitters, staggered-width 20-inch wheels, a functional butterfly hood scoop and what it refers to as an "F1-style tail lamp." Strangely, the tuning house didn't actually bring the 351 to the LA show, so we're going to have to wait a bit for more images of this bad boy. Pricing and release date have not been announced yet, either.

Along with all the new model introductions hitting the stages of the LA Auto Show, automakers made plenty of announcements in regards to technology heading into the show. Chevrolet's MyLink will be adding Siri and Ford is reportedly preparing some more updates for its MyFord Touch and My Lincoln Touch, but now Kia has announced that it will be releasing the next version of its Uvo infotainment system in the 2014 Kia Sorento and later in other Kia models including the redesigned 2014 Forte.

Uvo is Kia's hands-free infotainment system, and now it will be adding a telematics "eServices" system including vehicle diagnostics, a parking location reminder for drivers and 911 Connect. Officially called Uvo eServices Infotainment System with Voice Command Navigation, this is essentially the "version 2.0" for Uvo, which came with voice recognition and hands-free control of mobile phones when it was introduced in 2010.

When the 2014 Sorento goes on sale, the new Uvo will only be compatible with iPhones, but Android phones are expected to work by the second quarter. Scroll down for Kia's press release on the updated Uvo system.

2012 LA Auto Show floor

Well, we've tied the bow on yet another Los Angeles Auto Show. And while we're still here soaking up some of the SoCal sun (okay, so it's actually raining a little), it's time to look back and decide what new models grabbed our attention in the best way possible while we perused the LA Convention Center.

This show occasionally gets shafted on ultra-hot reveals simply because it falls directly between a major European auto show (either Paris or Frankfurt, depending on the year) and the North American International Auto Show in Detroit - the most important show in the United States. But that doesn't mean there isn't a whole lot of excellent metal to be seen in Los Angeles.

2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Limited Edition

The hurrah of the last kind for the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is this Limited Edition that celebrates 30 years of Mitsubishi Motors in North America. Built in North America as well, the 2013 Outlander Sport Limited Edition gets numerous black trim pieces outside, such as the center bumper, side mirror housings, wheel arch trim and skirting and roof rails. It sits on special Argent wheels.

Open the doors and the darkness continues with available Dove Grey and Black leather seating, and black leather parking brake sleeve, all accented by aluminum brake and accelerator pedals. On this model the six-way power driver's seat is standard. The sole performance mod is a new balancer shaft that makes for quicker acceleration without any penalty in the mileage rating.

As much as we love to cover the mainstream part of the LA show each year - important debuts, fresh concepts, splashy presentations, etc. - we reserve a special place in our hearts for the tuner/aftermarket/toys/games/odd stuff that can always be found on the basement level of the Los Angeles Convention Center. It's in this space, sometimes referred to internally as "mini SEMA," we can count on getting to look at the physical instantiation of automotive imagination run rampant.

Unfortunately, as almost all of the booths are either still in the process of being set up or unmanned altogether, there's little to no detail to be had about most of the stuff on display. So rather than pepper you with, you know, facts and stuff, we invite you to simply enjoy the attached gallery of images on their own merits. A sort of digital walk-thru of LA's nether region, if you will. Enjoy.

2014 Mitsubishi Outlander

The 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander wears the new face previewed at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year, and adds a host of features on top of its seven standard chairs. Ditching the shark-nosed Lancer-inspired front has reduced drag, increased use of high-tensile steel means a 200-pound weight loss and the reworked 2.4-liter four-cylinder paired a CVT will all result in what Mitsubishi says is one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles in the seven-passenger segment. Looks-wise, around the rest of the vehicle come sharper sculpting and more character lines.

Reaching higher inside, the IP is now soft-touch, and a heavily restyled interior with woodgrain accents is more somber, but more elegant. Mod-cons have gone up a step, too: the 2014 Outlander getting a next-generation nav system, a power tailgate that can be opened from the driver's seat and safety tech like Lane Departure Warning.

2013 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible Decade Editions

Volkswagen has introduced three special edition Beetle Convertible models to celebrate the droptop's launch. The vehicles are designed to evoke three distinct decades in American cultural history: the 1950s, the 1960s and the 1970s, says the automaker.

The '50s Edition (front in the above image) is painted classic black and it arrives with a tan interior and chrome dog dish hubcaps. The '60's Edition (middle in the above image) has Denim Blue paint to remind owners of the period's blue jeans two-tone seats (Volkswagen calls them "groovy") and spoked alloy wheels. Lastly, the '70s Edition (back in the above image) is distinguished by its Toffee Brown paint and chromed wheels, to remind owners of the sophisticated side of the decade.

The new Beetle Convertible goes on sale next month.

As we mentioned earlier this month, the Mercedes-Benz Ener-G-Force concept was built as an entrant for this year's LA Design Challenge. The radical concept, visualizing what a rugged vehicle will look like more than a decade in the future, takes some of its styling cues from the Mercedes-Benz G-Class - a capable off-roader, despite its luxurious appointments.

Conceptually, the Ener-G-Force utilizes a "hydro-tech converter" to convert water into hydrogen for its fuel cell power. Emitting nothing but water vapor out of its exhaust pipes, the SUV has a range of about 500 miles and is nearly unstoppable thanks to its four wheel-hub electric motors that are electronically controlled to precisely handle any terrain. Adding to the Ener-G-Force's capabilities is its Terra-Scan system, highlighted by a 360 degree topography scanner that automatically adjusts its suspension on the roll.

But more impressive than anything else, and really upping its "wow" factor, is the fact that Mercedes-Benz invested the time, effort and resources to build this cool design study - a "concept car" in the traditional sense of the term - that has zero chance of seeing production (those huge plastic wheels don't even turn). Regardless, it's a lot of fun to look at.

2013 Mazda CX-9

Introduced in 2007, the Mazda CX-9 is a seven-passenger full-size crossover sharing its platform with the Ford Edge. Now entering its seventh year in showrooms, Mazda has again treated it to a mild mid-cycle facelift (it was also updated for the 2010 model year).

Physically speaking, the front and rear fascia receive familiar Kodo design enhancements that better align the CUV with its siblings (namely, the CX-5 and Mazda6). Inside, the cabin is the automaker's next-generation infotainment and audio package with a 5.8-inch touch-screen display, Bluetooth connectivity (audio and phone) and navigation (based on TomTom technology). Other audio enhancements include HD Radio, a Pandora interface and SMS audio receipt and delivery.

Smart ForJeremy

If you were to gaze upon the Smart Fortwo Electric Drive and ponder what you might add to sort of, you know, set it off a bit, you probably wouldn't consider adding a pair of wings. That's because you are not Jeremy Scott. He, on the other hand, would do exactly that. And has.

That's right, that winged wonder you see pictured above is not some sort of Redbull-induced hallucination. Rather, it is the result of a creative collaboration between Mercedes-Benz Cars Advanced Design Studios and the aforementioned famed fashion designer called, appropriately enough, the Smart ForJeremy. And, it has just made its debut at the LA Auto Show.

Besides the faux-feather flourishes that light up when the brakes are applied, the outward appearance of this 2013 limited special edition is tarted up with a custom set of propeller-inspired wheels with just enough shiny to balance the chromed finish of its tridion shell, mirrors and, um, "eyebrows."

Likewise, the interior is not exactly a study in subtlety. An aeronautical art deco theme is in full effect within the confines of the white, nappa-leather-swathed cabin, with its yoke-like steering wheel serving as the dominating focal point. If that's not enough to remind that you are in a road-going flight of fancy, it also boasts custom four-point seat belts and enough chrome trimmings scattered about to require sunglasses for safe piloting.

While we can't say exactly what kind of flap it will cause in showrooms - we estimate a price tag ranging somewhere from "Are you freaking kidding me?" to just north of "Would you have any Grey Poupon?" - we don't expect more than a very small flock to be offered for sale.

Although we already know what the 2014 Subaru Forester looks like, and we've even driven it, we have not actually been able to snap any first-hand pictures of Subie's redesigned crossover... until now. Sitting on stage at the LA Auto Show for its official US debut, we finally get to see what the latest Subaru looks like through our lens.

Going on sale in the spring, the 2014 Forester will be powered by two four-cylinder boxer engines. The base Forester 2.5 models are expected to get highway fuel economy of up to 32 miles per gallon, while the sportier XT model with a new turbocharged, direct-injected 250-horsepower 2.0-liter engine still gets a decent 28 mpg highway. The new Forester will also offer Subaru's EyeSight driver assist technology that uses stereo cameras mounted on either side of the rearview mirror.

2014 Ford Transit Connect Wagon 5-Passenger

It ain't a looker, but the Ford Transit Connect Wagon is more functional than a Gobot and has returned the word "mini" to The Blue Oval's van selection. Ford is screaming from the Transit Connect Wagon's optional panoramic roof that it's "anticipating up to" 30 highway miles per gallon for buyers choosing the 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine. The other powerplant choice is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder, both connected to a six-speed transmission.

Smaller families can go with the five-seater version, while the seven-seater will be available on a longer wheelbase for larger clans. Trims are XL, XLT and the familiar Titanium, all of them boasting sliding side doors, fold-flat second and third rows and payload capacities beyond 1,200 pounds. There are two rear-entry options to boot, either a rear liftgate or side-hinged cargo doors if you insist on being reminded of the commercial roots of your minivan.

The five-seater is in the high-res gallery above, the seven-seater in the one below, with both demonstrating that it's the beauty inside that matters most.

Lexus LF-LC Blue Concept

Until the day when we can see a production version of the Lexus LF-LC Concept, we'll just make do with seeing the sleek two-door in different colors for now. After first showing us the car in a Candy Apple Red color at the Detroit Auto Show, Lexus has brought its LF-LC Blue (in a deep ocean blue) from Down Under to LA.

Aside from the new color, there's nothing new for us to see here. That means we were still ogling over its flowing body lines, impressed by its 500-horsepower hybrid drive system and looking forward to possibly seeing the car go into production.

2013 Honda Crosstour live reveal at 2012 LA Auto Show

Honda has pulled the sheet on the redesigned Crosstour here in LA, showing a car that is more refined, perhaps, than the outgoing model, but still not exactly what we'd call "a looker."

The usual suspects have been addressed in this refresh: the Crosstour's front fascia, fenders and side skirts have all been tweaked. The 2013 Crosstour will be available with both a 2.4-liter, 192-horsepower four-cylinder engine, and a more powerful, 278-hp 3.5L V6. Both engines are from Honda's new Earth Dreams family of powerplants and deliver better fuel economy - 22/31 city/highway miles per gallon for the four-banger - than last year's offerings.

Whether or not you care for the Crosstour's new mug (take a look at it on Honda's LA show stand in our attached gallery) you have to give it up to the company for making it easier than ever to buy, thanks to a lower MSRP. The Crosstour now starts at $27,230, which is $525 less than last year's model. Scroll down for a press release.

Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 Roadster

After having all of the official details dropped a few weeks ago, and judging the significance of the price tag just a bit later, we're finally getting our first look at Lamborghini's newest drool-inducer, the Aventador LP700-4 Roadster. News flash: It's just as good-looking in person as it is in stock shots.

That's right, if our fresh gallery of images from the show floor are any indication, buyers with fat-enough bank accounts to put the 700-horsepower V12 Lambo in the garage will not be disappointed with it aesthetically. The sharply creased supercar bodywork looks, arguably, more impressive in topless form than it does as a coupe, which is really saying something.

This week's Los Angeles Auto Show plays host to the coming out party for the 2013 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible, which once again gives the German automaker a pair of four-seat convertibles clustered within striking distance of each other's price ranges. That won't be the case for long, however, as the recently refreshed Eos folding hardtop convertible won't get a successor.

The handwriting has been on the wall for the slow-selling model, which is priced above the new Beetle droptop, starting at $34,350 despite offering a similar powertrain to the Beetle Turbo, which rings up at $27,795 (base 2.5-liter Beetle Convertibles start at $24,495). Through October, Volkswagen has managed to sell just 5,529 Eos units, down 17.8 percent over 2011. This, despite a modest facelift and equipment updates for the 2012 model year. At the same time that the Eos was getting freshened, VW introduced the similarly sized and similar looking Golf Cabriolet for Europe, which despite folding hardtop construction, seemingly obviated the Eos' business case. The Cabriolet subsequently spawned GTI and R variants, giving the model further momentum and appeal.

Klaus Bischoff, Volkswagen's head of global design, did not tell Autoblog when the Eos will be phased out - VW has already released a 2013 model - but he did confirm that a replacement is not in the cards. However, Bischoff did express clear support for the idea of bringing the Golf Cabriolet to North America, as well as the GTI Convertible.

After three years that saw a diesel, a plug-in and a natural gas vehicle win Green Car Journal's Green Car of the Year award, the Ford Fusion won the title this year at the start of the second day of the LA Auto Show. The Fusion was nominated in part because it has a variety of powertrain options: hybrid, plug-in hybrid and an EcoBoost gas engine.

The other 2013 finalists included the Dodge Dart Aero, Ford C-Max, Mazda CX-5 Skyactiv and Toyota Prius C. For what it's worth, the C-Max won the informal Autoblog/AutoblogGreen poll for 2013 with 31.5 percent of the vote. The official votes were tallied by a panel of judges of "the nation's top environmental leaders," car freaks like Jay Leno and the GCJ staff. GCJ's Ron Cogan said the winner was chose by majority vote.

Cogan also said that the award (and his magazine) have never been about vehicles that eke out mileage gains by stripping away the joy of driving. The method by which the five finalists are chosen is somewhat shrouded in mystery, but the Tesla Model S was left off the list due to its high price and the current unavailability of the base model. He said:

The Tesla Model S offers everything, by all reports. What it doesn't offer are things that are crucial to the Green Car Of The Year program, which are different than Motor Trend's Car of the Year or Yahoo Autos. We deal specifically in cars you can buy and buy now and vehicles that are affordable enough that you can buy them. We deal in vehicles that are available in significant enough numbers so you actually have quantifiable emissions reductions and oil displacement. It doesn't have to be a mass produced car in the sense that it's one of the best-selling cars, but it does have to be available. And, right now, the Tesla Model S, as good as it is, is the Signature Series at $95,000 to $105,000. That's not accessible. And the base model is not being delivered.

Last year, the Green Car of the Year winner was the Honda Civic Natural Gas. Previous winners include the Chevrolet Volt (2011), the Audi A3 TDI (2010), the Volkswagen Jetta TDI (2009) and the Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid (2008).
