When the first brave competitors sought glory on the Isle of Man in 1907, winning brands went by names like Matchless, Peugeot and Norton. Over one hundred years later, Austrian manufacturer KTM will take a chance to add its name to that prestigious list.

Known around the world as one of the most challenging venues on two wheels, the Isle of Man TT (tourist trophy) race is not only rich in history and heritage but also entertainment value. The 37-mile mountain course with its many real-world obstacles is not only extremely difficult but has also proved to exact high levels of concentration if competitors wish not to sacrifice man and machine to the tarmac. With straightaway speeds approaching 200 miles per hour, followed by bike launching bumps, berms and a collection of what we would call the most intimidating cobblestone walls on the planet, the Isle of Man is not for the faint of heart.

UK-based and KTM-backed Redline Motorcycles will take the flagship RC8R and pilot James Edmeades across the drink this June, marking the first time a KTM has skirted the island for competition in the Superbike, Superstock and Senior TT Races. The company hopes this orange streak will extend off the rock and legitimize the RC8's place in competitive road racing events... as well as the hearts of fans the world over. At the very least, KTM and Redline know it will be an historic occasion as they tread in the tire marks of a century's worth of dedicated enthusiasts... naturally, they just want to do their treading from the top of the leader board.

We'll be honest and say right off the bat that we have a soft spot for KTM. This particular blogger's first real two-wheeler was an old KTM 125 two-stroke that ate piston rings for breakfast, lunch and dinner... but boy was it fast! More recently, the traditionally off-road-focused Austrian marque has made a renewed plans to enter the U.S. market with an exciting line of streetbikes, and that's reportedly set to continue in full force for 2010.

According to the boys at Hell For Leather, KTM plans to bring its entire line of motorcycles Stateside, and that includes the 990 Adventure R, Super Duke R, SMT and SMR along with the RC8 R superbike (finally!) and the full line of single-cylinder 690s. Speaking of which, also new for 2010 is the 2010 690 Duke R that gets firmer suspenders, a bespoke paint scheme and carbon fiber fender and, most importantly, an enlarged engine with 70 horsepower and 51 lb-ft of torque. Hit the jump for a detailed PDF file that contains KTM's full line.

You've got to respect the capabilities of the orange and black machines currently rolling out of KTM's Austrian headquarters, but after watching some promotional footage of its latest bikes in action, we can only surmise that the European cycle manufacturer isn't quite familiar with the lawyer-bred nature of things here in the United States. After the break, you'll find a set of seriously awesome videos highlighting the kind of hooligan antics made possible by Supermoto-style machinery like the KTM 690SM and 950SM. You'll also witness the sheer performance and acceleration available to riders of any literbike, including KTM's new RC8.

These guys are hardcore, reminding us that it's not always the destination, but rather how you get there. This footage really speaks for itself, so we can only add a reminder to ride safe out there and to keep the really dangerous antics relegated to a proper track.

[Source: The Return of the Cafe Racers]
Continue reading Video: KTM demonstrates how to ride its bikes

Video: KTM demonstrates how to ride its bikes originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 28 Dec 2008 19:33:00 EST.
Click above for more shots of the 2009 KTM RC8 R

KTM is set to go racing next year with its RC8 R superbike, which is hot off the presses from the EICMA show in Milan. Featuring a V-Twin engine that displaces 1195cc's (that's almost the maximum size allowed for racing against liter-class fours), the liquid cooled engine pumps out 165 horsepower or 180 with the optional race exhaust. We'd expect a significant chunk of torque from the 75-degree twin cylinder as well, which the machine will rely on as it goes up against the stratospheric revvers from Japan.

Styling-wise, we're totally smitten with its angular bodywork and flat black paint colors. Combined with the orange frame and matte white highlights, the Austrian firm offers a distinctive look compared to the sensual Ducatis and Aprilias, swoopy bikes from the Big Four Japanese manufacturers and the purposeful BMW. We're not sure what KaTooM will charge for the priviledge of owning an R-model, but those unwilling to pony up the extra dough can still opt for the standard 1148cc RC8.

Also new from KTM is a touring version of its 990cc V-Twin powered Supermoto, which gets a small fairing, more comfortable ergos and some luggage. There's also an R model of the Supermoto for those who wish to drag a foot instead of a knee as on the RC8. The Supermoto R goes the exactly opposite direction from the T by losing weight and upping the suspension and braking bits. Lastly, there's a new 990 Adventure R model that loses the ABS, adds 9 horses and gets better suspension and brakes. All the bikes get cool new looks, so be sure to click past the break for the rest of the galleries.

Gallery: KTM RC8 R

[Source: KTM]

EICMA 2008: KTM intoduces RC8 R, Supermoto T and R, 990 Adventure R originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 06 Nov 2008 09:57:00 EST.
Gasp! The Superbike races are heating up fast, with Ducati's new 1098, Buell's new 1125 and now KTM's new RC8 all sporting V-Twin engines of around 150 horsepower. The KTM is what we are looking at above, and it is not likely to be mistaken for any other machine. In case you missed the sharp-edged styling that is indicative of KTM's sportbikes, the screaming-pumpkin orange paint is sure to catch your attention. The RC8 features a new 75 degree V-Twin engine displacing 1148cc's, making 155 horsepower. That's class-competitive, although the bike is a bit of a porker at 414 lbs.

Soon to be competing for your hard-earned bucks against the KaToom, Buell and Ducati will be a new bike from Aprilia, as well. Hold on tight, 'cause the rumor-mill is reporting that BMW is hot on the heals of the other Euro manufacturers with a class-competitive superbike on the horizon too. Good times are ahead whether you're a fan of the Japanese Four or favor something a little different, as the KTM RC8 shown here proves.
