Autonomous cars are impressive displays of in-car technology, but what exactly would the benefit of such systems be for the average driver? Audi has answered that question by showing off its Piloted Parking system for the Audi Connect at CES 2013.

Installed on this Audi A7, Piloted Parking allows a driver to drop themselves off and have the car autonomously drive away on its own and find its own parking spot. The car can then later be retrieved by "calling" it back with a specially designed smartphone app. We'd be lying if we said this didn't bring back memories of Michael Knight summoning KITT with his wristwatch. The most impressive part of this car might be the fact that the car is fully autonomous but doesn't have any obvious sensors or monitors on the exterior of the car like many other self-driving cars have.

Check out a video of the this innovative technology in action after the jump.
Continue reading Audi takes cars that park themselves to a whole new level

Audi takes cars that park themselves to a whole new level originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 11 Jan 2013 10:01:00 EST.
We are so close to living in a world where everyone can be David Hasselhoff. Thanks to an enterprising programmer named Brandon Fiquett and Apple's Siri app for the iPhone 4S, there's at least one Acura TL out there responding to voice control in awesome Knight Rider fashion.

While not quite up to the level of interactivity that Hollywood dreamed up for the Knight Industries Two Thousand, Fiquett's TL will remotely start itself and turn off the ignition on his command. The system works by relaying the Siri command to a proxy server, which sends the instructions to a Viper car automation and security system. About the only thing missing here is William Daniels doing the voice of KITT - and that awesome black Trans Am itself.

Fiquett has put his source code up for download, so if you're interested in trying it yourself and you've got some coding skills, have at it on his website. Otherwise, just click through the jump to watch the video.
Continue reading Siri hack lets iPhone control your car

Siri hack lets iPhone control your car originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 28 Nov 2011 19:14:00 EST.
Hero car K.I.T.T. from Knight Rider is for sale - Click above for high-res image gallery

For sale - Celebrity car. One lightly used crime-stopper of a coupe, has go-fast looks with a fuel-efficient powertrain. If you want attention, this is the car for you. Valued between $25,000 and $35,000.

Looking to add some celebrity "muscle" to your garage? Profiles In History is hosting a Hollywood memorabilia auction and lot #122 is one of two hero cars from the modern version of Knight Rider. Surely you recall the series... our very own Alex Nunez sat through every single episode to provide you with details of what was going on.

In the updated show, which first aired in 2008, K.I.T.T. is a Ford Mustang that wears Shelby GT500KR parts. The car in this auction has all those parts, inside and out, except it falls short one kind of important aspect: there's no supercharged V8 underhood... or any V8 at all for that matter. And it's not even the good V6 Mustang. Inside the engine bay sits the old 4.0-liter unit and it's paired with a five-speed automatic transmission. That's right... this K.I.T.T. is all show and no go.

Sadly, the most interesting thing about this car is that it also includes the wooosh-wooosh signature Knight Rider sweeping red light up front. Even that would get old quickly. Buying this car does have its benefits though, as the auction proceeds are being put towards a children's charity. The auction is a one-day affair scheduled for November 6th, 2010 at The Globe Theater in Universal Studios. David Hasselhoff sold separately.

Here's our chance. If we all come together, pool our resources and work for the common good, we can buy two of the Ford Mustangs used in the filming of the thankfully-deceased Knight Rider remake. Why would we want to lay our hands on the distastefully-modified NBC creations? To kill them with fire. Think of it: a world in which the only bad Knight Rider was the original Knight Rider; a world where children are safe from thinking that KITT was anything other than the world's most awesome self-aware Trans Am. We can do this.

The KR cars have cropped up with a handful of other, more famous TV and movie cars headed for a Mecum auction. Alongside the Knight Industries travesties, the well-moneyed out there can bid on the likes of the two unused Cobra body shells from the first Iron Man and a certain tiger-ferrying 1965 Mercedes-Benz 220SE Convertible from The Hangover. A few other lust-worthy models are also set to stand before the gavel, including the My Name is Earl El Camino and a 2001 Buell police bike used in Terminator: Rise of the Machines.

Of course, all of those pale in comparison to our chance to right history's wrong. We can't do anything for Nunez's damaged sanity at this point, but we can keep someone else from preserving these disasters for posterity. We need to hurry, though. The auction kicks off May 19 at the Indiana Fair Grounds.
Legendary car customizer George Barris is scheduled to unveil his latest project - a kustomized 2010 Chevrolet Camaro 2SS RS - by driving the car straight to the dealer himself. Called the "Spirit" Camaro, the car is designed to be affordable for the working class Joe, meaning there aren't any wild power adders under the hood.

Instead, Barris focused on creating a unique exterior for the General Motors muscle car. The hood and front fenders all get a striking paint job in the buyer's choice of either red or yellow, complete with pearl accents. The grille has been swapped for a new three-bar unit designed to give the car a classic feel. The look won't be for everyone, but it could be your only chance to own an original Barris creation. You can order your very own through your local Chevrolet dealer, who will contact Community Chevrolet in turn.

Barris made a name for himself by creating some of Hollywood's most iconic cars and trucks. His work took center stage on shows like The Beverly Hillbillies, The Munsters and the original Batman. He even turned out the very first KITT for Knight Rider back before NBC had its way with the concept. So far, there's no word on how many Spirit Camaros will be produced, or how much Barris will want for each one. Stay tuned.

Are these the ultimate performance cars? Maybe not in 0-60 or quarter mile times - although we wouldn't count a few of them out at the dragstrip - but in terms of actually being performers. Some of the random cars and trucks we found at this year's New York Auto Show are perhaps just as famous as their on-screen co-stars of the human variety.

While the A-Team van parked right smack dab in the middle of the entryway was an easy target, we delved a little deeper and found a Mach 5, K.I.T.T., Batmobile, Monkeemobile, and Grandpa Munster's Dragula sitting in a booth in the lower level of the Javits Center. Oh, and your eyes aren't deceiving you...that is the VW Beetle from Uncle Buck that was on eBay last year...just in time for Easter. After the star car turnout at Chicago, this was a nice encore.

When the new Knight Rider hit the airwaves, some were <strike>a bit disappointed</strike> thoroughly livid that Michael's new ride was a Mustang. Since the original KITT was a Trans Am, purists cried foul and said a more natural replacement would be the all-new 2010 Chevrolet Camaro. Fortunately or unfortunately, one enterprising Camaro owner decided to take up the task and right the show's perceived wrongs. Camaro5 poster Spaceballone picked up a $135 Scanner Light equipped with 64 ice blue LEDs and three built-in patterns. The hood slot in the Camaro fit the kit perfectly, with juice provided by the car's battery.

Hit the jump to view the video for yourself. It's not NBC quality (that could be a good thing), but we think you'll agree that KITT lighting looks good in blue.
Continue reading VIDEO: K.I.T.T. - Is that really you? No, that's not official, but it may as well be. Counseling will be made available to those in denial. Okay, it won't. Part of me might actually miss Knight Rider, because making fun of it has been such a blast. Nevertheless, it's over. I probably should have taped plastic up like they do in the locker rooms of playoff teams about to clinch the title. That way I can keep the champagne spray off my A/V receiver.

Via KR Online, here's the synopsis:

"I Love the Knight Life"

STRONGER THAN IS HUMANLY POSSIBLE--Mike (Justin Bruening) and KITT (voiced by Val Kilmer) are trying to track down a stolen serum that maximizes the recipient's physicality before it gets into the wrong hands. He offers to lend a hand in order to bring the bar back to its original glory. Meanwhile, Mike gets suspicious when he hears of the recent fires at the bar and discovers that someone has secretly being trying to get Julie to sell the place.

So, KITT vs arsonists. Maybe he'll turn into one of those cool Pierce fire trucks. Or not. Then KITT yelled like a drill instructor in the final moments of the show. It was as cringe-inducing as it sounds. Anyway, the post-reboot skinny on Knight Rider is this: it has gone from being hilariously bad to surprisingly boring -- especially for the crew that's now essentially jailed at the Fortress of Suck. Including tonight, there's 3 episodes to go before the Cancellation Reaper does his inevitable thing.

Speaking of tonight's show, here's the skinny, via KR Online:

"Fly By Knight"
EVERYONE NEEDS A LITTLE HELP--A plane carrying a 10 year-old federal witness has crashed or so it seems. Mike tries to help the DEA Agent Jessie Renning, by informing her that the crash has been faked and that the drug dealer that killed his father has kidnapped the boy. Considering this information for a brief moment, she instead arrests him for hindering her investigation. Meanwhile, Sarah tries to make a deal with the Deputy Director of National Intelligence for autonomy for the SSC's future cases. Running out of time, Mike and KITT need to find the boy before he is forced to tell where the drugs have been hidden and is killed.

SSC's future cases? Methinks there's some wishful thinking going on in the writers' room. In "Fight Knight," Tiki Barber guest stars as a dead drill sergeant, there's no soap made from human fat, and you won't need to worry about subliminal porn images being edited in -- just promos for Heroes and Chuck.

The official synopsis, via Knight Rider Online:

"Fight Knight"

DOWN FOR THE COUNT--Mike's old Army friend recruits his help to investigate the suspicious death of a tough-as-nails drill sergeant Jack Burber.
Well, what do you know? K.I.T.T. was a big hit here at Barrett-Jackson today. We'd never have guessed that there would be enough fans (with money) of the original Knight Rider series here at the auction to drive bidding all the way to $40,000 (add another $4K in fees), but indeed there were. This isn't actually one of the original cars that was used by the Hoff in the '80s, but bits and pieces of it were in fact used in the craptastic new version that our own Mr. Núñez so lovingly mocks each and every week in his hilarious live blog. Not all is lost, though, for fans of the real K.I.T.T., as this is a fully functioning replica, complete with the trademark flashing front strobe lights and two working monitors inside. Plus, how many of your friends have talking cars that are signed by George Barris? None. Perhaps it was worth the dough after all.

Gallery: Barrett-Jackson 2009: 1982 Trans Am K.I.T.T. replica

Photos copyright (C)2009 Jeremy Korzeniewski / Weblogs, Inc.
Barrett-Jackson 2009: 1982 Pontiac Trans Am K.I.T.T. replica originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 16 Jan 2009 19:58:00 EST.
Alex should be writing this post, as he's the sharp end of the stick with which we've been poking NBC for the past 11 episodes of the new Knight Rider. His Knight Rider Liveblogs are ruthless and hilarious at the same time, and next weeks will be a high watermark for his creative series of posts. That's because episode 12 of what will surely be the first and last season of Knight Rider in the modern era will feature the showdown between our beloved KITT and his nemesis KARR. In the original series, KARR (Knight Automated Roving Robot) was the prototype version of KITT and a little rougher around the edges compared to KITT himself, i.e. he had a programming error that made him "unstable" and liable to kill an innocent pedestrian with a Turbo Boost to the chest. The modern KARR, however, is a full on Transformer that's bipedal and has a mean right hook. Take a gander at the official preview after the jump that appeared at the end of episode of 11, and come back next Wednesday night when Alex enters the ring with KITT and KARR and only one comes out alive.

[Source: YouTube]
Continue reading VIDEO: KITT vs. KARR, the official preview

VIDEO: KITT vs. KARR, the official preview originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 15 Jan 2009 16:29:00 EST. Once the 12/31 episode is out of the way (it's reportedly one of the earliest ones filmed, so expect it to suck miserably), the too-little-too-late "reboot" of Knight Rider will get rolling, with character deaths (yes!) and a story arc that will include a KITT vs. KARR showdown. As in the original series (which seems like I, Claudius compared to the current dreck) Peter Cullen will provide KARR with his voice. Unfortunately, instead of a two-tone 3rd-gen F-body, that voice will be attached to giant transforming robot. That's all good for Peter Cullen, who knows from voicing transforming robots, but for Knight Rider it seems pretty dopey, which is par for the course. For a sneak peek at KARR's new form, check out the video snippet posted at Knight Rider Online. Liveblogging the final nine episodes of this catastrophe is gonna be fun, and it all resumes Wednesday at 8pm Eastern.

[Source: Knight Rider Online]
Yes, in the new Knight Rider, KARR is a big robot originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 28 Dec 2008 16:05:00 EST.
There were a lot of movie and TV-themed vehicles at SEMA this year, but one of our favorite entertainment tie-ins had to be the Mio Knight Rider GPS system. We told you about this way back in June, played with it when the new K.I.T.T. visited the Autoblog Garage, and messed with it some more in Vegas. It sounds exactly like you'd hope it would. "Michael, you're going the wrong way, you ninny," isn't in the regular playlist, but it did have some attitude. Even better than laying hands on the Mio, however, was the fact that K.I.T.T. ( no, not the Mustang) was actually in the Mio booth selling the product. It was almost too much to handle. As we told you in June, the Mio Knight Rider GPS unit uses the voice the one-and-only William Daniels, the original voice of K.I.T.T., and asks cordially "Hello Michael, where do you want to go today?" when powered up. The 4.3-inch LCD display is also flanked by a series of red LEDs reminiscent of K.I.T.T.'s nose-mounted lights. It's available for sale now at about $270.

Gallery: SEMA 2008: K.I.T.T. helps sell GPS systems

Photos copyright (C)2008 Frank Filipponio/Weblogs, Inc.
SEMA 2008: K.I.T.T. helps sell Knight Rider GPS for Mio originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 09 Nov 2008 12:20:00 EST.
