Whoever is pulling the strings over at Kia's global marketing operations must love them some old school hip hop. Kia kicked off the urban vibe with its brilliant Soul commercial. The spot featured the marque's celebrated CGI hamsters and the classic Black Sheep track "The Choice is Yours," while poking fun at toasters on wheels like the Scion xB and the Nissan Cube. Good stuff, indeed.

Kia of Australia is going back even farther back with a one minute spot for the Sportage featuring the 1982 Grandmaster Melle Mel & The Furious Five hit "The Message." But instead of rocking some overplayed rodents, the ad folks Down Under put the Grandmaster and Scorpio in the car with the suburbanite dad who lip syncs along with the forefathers of rap. We think the commercial has something to do with the guys being close to the edge. Hit the jump to watch the commercial, then scroll down for the second "making of" video. Not quite as entertaining as hip-hopping hamsters, but it's one heck of a song to put in a commercial. Thanks to everyone for the tips!

Kia Soul This or That advertising spot - Click above to watch the video after the break

You could get with this, or you could get with that. 'This,' in case you were wondering, would be the 2010 Kia Soul, and 'that' would be, um, anything else. Especially a toaster, washing machine or cardboard box... and we'll leave those vehicular associations up to you to decipher.

Before you actually watch the video pasted after the break, please know that our collective heads heads have officially exploded due to the sheer awesomeness of this effort from Kia and its marketing firm. First of all, the clip features the oddly popular Hamsters from Kia's initial marketing launch for the Soul, the first commercial of which managed to win Nielsen's Automotive Ad of the Year.

More importantly, as far as we're concerned at least, is the use of Black Sheep's The Choice is Yours as the musical accompaniment to the Alien Green Soul and its urban backdrop. Also note that the character's so-called Hamstar clothing will soon be available for purchase by fans at hamstarclothing.com. Seriously.

Expect to see this advertisement all over your television set and in movie theaters starting on Friday, May 28. That said, we highly suggest that you get the jump on everyone else and watch the video now. Seriously, what are you waiting for? Hit the jump.
Some other employees, like former Kia execs Len Hunt, CEO of Kia Motors America, and Ian Beavis, VP of marketing, will have more than just the day off: they recently ended their employment with Kia over what's being portrayed as a case of humor that got lost in translation.

To promote its President's Day sale, the company ran an ad featuring "unheard of" President Millard Fillmore, "best remembered as the first president to have a running-water bathtub." Cue the segue into the "unheard of" deals that Kia dealers would be offering during the long weekend. And to commemorate the event and the president, Kia made soap-on-a-rope busts of Mr. Fillmore, some of which were handed out during a press event at the Chicago Auto Show. And, uh... yeah... that's it. Unheard-of president, unheard-of deals, and soap.

But Byung Mo Ahn, chairman and group CEO of Kia Motors America and Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia -- and the man who hired and promoted Len Hunt -- apparently didn't find the soap-on-a-rope commercial that funny. Word is that Ahn wants more serious commercials focusing on Kia's quality. So even though Hunt and Beavis presided over a solid sales story and growing brand awareness, and Hunt was especially well-liked by dealers, the two men are now probably on their way to other automakers. And Kia commercials are about to get very boring. Our sympathies to Hunt and Beavis, yet if nothing else, at least now Millard Fillmore has another claim to fame. Thanks for the tip, Keith!

[Source: Ad Age]
Kia marketing execs leave company because of ...
