Get your torrents warmed up! The new season of Top Gear finally airs tomorrow night in the UK (don't even get us started on why BBC America is still running something like season 7 right now), and the boys are unveiling an all-new reasonably-priced car.
Ever since the all-new 2011 Hyundai Sonata went on sale in February, it's been selling faster than ever. Over 18,000 units were moved in both March and April and the new turbo and hybrid models are still to come later this year. In order to continue meeting the demand for the new sedan, moving Santa Fe SUV production out of Hyundai's Montgomery, Alabama factory (where the Sonata is also built) is now under consideration. Montgomery's been running overtime for weeks.
In addition to the production version of Kia's new Venga and ECO-dynamics range of automobiles, the Korean automaker has announced plans to show off two new concept vehicles, each with a different hybrid powertrain. First up is the cee'd Hybrid, which will pair a 1.6-liter four cylinder engine running on gasoline to a powertrain very similar to the recently-released Forte LPI Hybrid that will also be in attendance.
It looks like the No 3 concept that Kia unveiled at the Geneva Motor show last month will soon be headed to the streets. Judging by the looks of the lightly camouflaged prototype caught by a spy photographer, the c'eed plus will stay very true to the concept inside and out. The one major concept element that, not surprisingly, goes away is the unusual diagonal windshield header that goes from the passenger side A-pillar to the driver's side B-pillar.
Kia is showing off two new and fuel-efficient variants of its compact c'eed here in Geneva this week. The first, which is going on sale immediately, is the c'eed ISG, or Idle Stop and Go. The ISG, as the name implies, features an auto start-stop system that is claimed to improve urban fuel efficiency by up to 15 percent. As with other such systems, it simply shuts down and restarts the engine when the vehicle comes to a stop and resumes. The ISG setup is available on 1.4L and 1.6L engines in all
Kia's compact cee'd hatchback will be getting a new automatic start-stop system starting this spring in Europe. The system which switches off the engine when the car comes to a stop and restarts it when the clutch pedal is pressed down should give about a fuel efficiency boost of about six percent overall. However, in urban stop and go driving the difference can be up to 15 percent. Such systems will be increasingly common in the next few years (see: Ford) as a low cost way of reducing idle emis
Kia is said to be set to show off a hybrid version of its cee'd hatchback, which is available in many countries that are not named the United States. This isn't the first hybrid that the Korean automaker has developed; the hybrid Rio gets that honor. In the past, Kia officials have indicated that it will unveil a hybrid Elantra for its home market sometime in 2009. Following a year later will be a hybrid version of its Sonata mid-sizer, which we are expected to see at the upcoming L.A. Auto Show
Kia's will have at least two new tricks at the Paris Motor Show, one of them being the Kia Soul. The other will be a Kia cee'd gas-electric hybrid. Already available in coupe, 5-door hatch, and sportwagon variants, a hybrid addition based on the five-door would be a perfect addition to the line. So far, the only details we have is that the c'ee hybrid isn't planned for sale until 2010, when it will join a train of new hybrids from other makers. Kia apparently decided that is when they'll be able
