Hyundai and Kia could have as many as nine hybrid, EV, and fuel cell vehicles in the lineup by 2018. Coming for 2017 are the brands' first dedicated hybrid models, and Hyundai could get an EV version for California.
NHTSA is opening a preliminary evaluation into airbag inflators from Arc Automotive. The agency has reports of two ruptures with injuries: one in a 2002 Chrysler Town and Country and another in a 2004 Kia Optima. It's not yet known whether the incidents are linked.

With all the excitement at the Kia stand surrounding the new Soul EV, it's easy to forget that there were other cars on display at the Korean marque's Chicago Auto Show display. The Niro Concept from the Frankfurt Motor Show made an appearance, but the other production model on display was the refreshed Optima Hybrid (which was tucked away in a corner).
Think back to the 2013 New York Auto Show, and you'll recall that the already attractive Kia Optima midsize sedan was re-schnozzed for the 2014 model year. The hybrid version was left alone, visually, though its powertrain was updated to provide more oomph and slightly better fuel economy. And now, the whole thing comes full circle – the fresh-faced 2014 Optima Hybrid is making its debut here at the Chicago Auto Show.
In what is likely the largest recall campaign for Hyundai and Kia, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced a recall of more than 1.6 million models due to a faulty brake switch. This is in addition to almost 700,000 Hyundai and Kia models recalled for the same problem back in 2009.
