Oh boy, this is about to get confusing with a capital Q.

Infiniti has just announced a brand-new scheme that calls for completely new model names across its entire lineup of vehicles. Making things even more difficult will be the fact that all coupes, convertible and sedans will get a Q prefix while all crossovers and SUVs will be prefixed with QX.

Further muddying the waters, previous engine displacement monikers will be replaced by a double-digit number "representing hierarchy within the range." Put less simply, the slot in the lineup currently held by the G Sedan will be called Q50 while the G Coupe and Convertible will be called Q60. Q70 will replace the M Sedan at the top of the automaker's lineup of cars.

On the truck side, the range-topping QX is now the QX80. Sitting below is the QX70, which was formerly the FX, then the QX60 that used to be the JX and finally the QX50, which was but is no longer the EX. Qonfused yet?

Getting back to the G... excuse us, Q50, this is the new sedan that Infiniti had previously announced would be debuting at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show. Best we can tell, this is a replacement for the old G Sedan, and it will sit below the currently available G Coupe and G Convertible, which will be renamed Q60.

The Q50 will be the first model from Infiniti to fall into the new Q-based naming convention, with the rest of the automaker's lineup falling into place as 2014 models are announced. Infiniti said on a conference call that this move was necessary as the brand branches out beyond the United States.

"This strategic change reflects Infiniti's desire for clarity and cohesiveness," says the press release, which you can read below.
When we see a vehicle like a Lamborghini Urus or the Bentley EXP 9 F concept, we may at first scratch our heads, wondering why an automaker would take this route. When the accountants see these vehicles, they see one thing: dollar signs. No matter what angle you come at it from, SUVs and crossovers are cash cows for carmakers, especially luxury brands. It's a truth that Kicking Tires laid bare in a recent article.

One shining example given highlights this phenomenon by way of recent sales figures by Infiniti. September deliveries of the JX fullsize crossover shown above represented 24 percent of Infiniti's sales. In fact, Infiniti's four crossovers (FX, QX, and don't forget the EX) accounted for 39 percent of the Japanese luxury brand's sales. 10 years ago, the brand sold only one SUV, the QX4. In a four-model lineup, the gussied-up Nissan Pathfinder SUV accounted for a fifth of its sales in 2002. Fast-forward to the present, and Infiniti "truck" sales in 2012 were up 63.3 percent, while car sales were up just 2.5 percent.

The article goes on to point out similar trends based on the proliferation of the X3 and X1 in BMW's lineup, Acura's crossovers making up half of its sales in September and how the Cayenne outsold the rest of the Porsche lineup combined. There are a lot more sales facts and figures if you read through to the article, but the gist of it is: luxury SUVs and crossovers sell big, and they can float a brand's sales when other vehicles are not moving off the lot.

Even so, judging by today's earlier Automotive News Europe report, it appears that even luxury SUVs aren't immune from sales pressures - the aforementioned Lamborghini and Bentley SUVs may be delayed due to Europe's tortured new car market.
The importance of luxury SUV and crossover sales explained originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 11 Oct 2012 18:00:00 EST.
The 2013 Infiniti JX just went on sale this summer, but it's already experiencing some growing pains. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced a recall for the all-new JX today for an issue that could leave drivers stranded. This recall, which begins on September 4, affects early JX models built between February 15 and June 22. That amounts to 7,842 units - through July, Infiniti has sold 9,724 JX models in total.

Infiniti's new luxury three-row crossover is being recalled due to a problem with a fuel line that can block the fuel level float that could yield an incorrect reading on the fuel gauge. With the gauge stuck at the same level, JX owners could run out of gas thinking they have more fuel than they do. Fortunately, the free fix for the problem is simply inspecting and, if necessary, rerouting the fuel line away from the fuel level float.

An investigation has been opened by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration into the 2013 Infiniti JX over possible issues with the emergency brake.

Specifically, the probe is looking at improper application of the e-brake, according to a Reuters report. While the investigation of 8,000 new Infiniti crossovers is not a recall, it could eventually trigger one if the government agency doesn't like what it finds.

The probe was launched after a pair of owners reported to NHTSA that "the intelligent brake assist system inappropriately activated emergency braking autonomously bringing the vehicle to an immediate and complete stop." One can see the potential danger in a vehicle that stops unintentionally and without warning.

No word yet on what might have caused the issue, but we'll keep our eyes peeled for more information.

NHTSA investigating 2013 Infiniti JX over e-brake concern originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 31 Jul 2012 15:59:00 EST. Three-row crossovers are a bit like accounting departments in that every automaker has one, and there isn't much else about them that's exciting. But while most every automaker offers a crossover with seating for seven or eight, there surprisingly aren't many options in the luxury space. The Audi Q7 doesn't really count since it weighs an SUV-like 5,200 pounds. Lincoln offers the MKT, but few buyers have taken Ford's luxury marque up on that offer. And then there is the Buick Enclave, which sells well but suffers from that "not quite a Cadillac" feeling. That's it... every other three-row luxury vehicle falls squarely in the body-on-frame SUV category, until now.

Infiniti is looking to spice up the larger luxury space with its JX35, which is built on next-generation Nissan Pathfinder hardware, but with more expressive sheet metal and a spruced-up cabin compared to its mainstream counterpart. Since the field is wide open for Infiniti, the luxury brand appears ready to blaze its own trail with a reasonable $40,000 price of entry and an impressive suite of available features.

2013 Infiniti JX35 [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 21 Jun 2012 11:57:00 EST.
Consumers looking for a sports coupe, sports sedan, sporty five-passenger crossover, luxury five-passenger crossover, trailer-capable SUV, sporty convertible or hybrid luxury sedan have been able to drive out of Infiniti showrooms very satisfied. The automaker offers a well-curated family of vehicles for each of these genres, without question.

However, affluent families seeking an import luxury seven-passenger crossover - without a traditional truck lineage - have been forced to shop elsewhere. Many of Infiniti's missed opportunities end up holding keys to an Acura MDX, Audi Q7 or Volvo XC90. Aiming to close a gaping leak in its product range, Infiniti officially introduced the world to its all-new JX crossover at the Los Angeles Auto Show just a few months ago.

The new arrival has been engineered to "excel in the areas that luxury crossover buyers desire most - interior flexibility and roominess, safety, and advanced hospitality features," says Infiniti. But to us, some of those qualities seem to stray from the company's 'Inspired Performance' tagline. Intrigued by the new arrival, we climbed aboard an airliner and flew to Charleston, South Carolina, for an introduction and test drive of the JX crossover.
Continue reading 2013 Infiniti JX [w/video]

2013 Infiniti JX [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 27 Mar 2012 11:57:00 EST.
Infiniti has loosed the hounds of advertising on behalf of its new three-row, seven-seat crossover, the 2012 JX. The four spots, set to run throughout NCAA March Madness, are focused on features like a novel Backup Collision Intervention System, live personal assistant and tri-zone entertainment. They aren't the most creative spots we've ever seen, but they do a good job of showing a number of the CUV's unique features while placing the vehicle in a luxury context.

Infiniti also teamed with GILT yesterday, the same luxury-minded e-tailer that sold Volkswagen Jetta sedans for $5,995 for a day back in 2010. This time, there was only one loaded JX35 up for grabs, but the lucky buyer got the luxury ute for half price: $27,425. Follow the jump to watch the ads and check out the press release.
Continue reading 2013 Infiniti JX ad blitz to tip off with NCAA March Madness

2013 Infiniti JX ad blitz to tip off with NCAA March Madness originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 13 Mar 2012 14:58:00 EST.
The first example of a given model to roll of the production line is called "Job One," and the Infiniti is celebrating just that for its 2013 JX: A seven-seater crossover in Emerald Green - mated with its 265-horsepower, 3.5-liter V6 from Decherd, TN - has rolled off the production line. Infiniti expects numerous JXs behind it to be the second most popular model in the company's lineup, bested only by the G sedan, coupe and convertible range.

The $41,400 (including $950 destination) three-row crossover and its liberal suite of configurations and technologies goes on sale in March, but you can register your interest or play with the configurator right now. There's also a press release after the jump with more details.
Continue reading 2013 Infiniti JX production underway

2013 Infiniti JX production underway originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 21 Feb 2012 10:59:00 EST.
Being a global automaker means having to deal with the rising and falling tides of currency. The climate is particularly difficult in Japan, where the yen is valued at record levels compared to the American dollar. Since a giant chunk of Japanese automotive exports are shipped off to America, that means greatly diminished profits.

As of the end of 2011, Infiniti, Nissan's in-house luxury marque, doesn't build any vehicles outside of it home country of Japan, though the QX full-size SUV was built in the United States for a time. That's all about to change, however, starting with the Infiniti JX crossover that's slated for production in early 2012 in Smyrna, Tennessee.

Soon, more models will be built outside of Japan. "As cars come up for renewal, generally they're being relocated in a function of where the majority of sales are," said Andy Palmer, executive vice president of Infiniti, speaking to Automotive News. We'd guess, then, that the upcoming small hatchback from Infiniti, which is said to be inspired by the Etherea Concept, will be built in Europe.

Even models that continue to be assembled in Japan - important, says Palmer, because, "Part of the myth of Infiniti is Japanese craftsmanship..." - will feature more parts imported from outside the country. Currently, Infiniti averages about 15 percent imported parts content for vehicles assembled in Japan, but the automaker is targeting a new goal of 65 percent "non-yen" content.

If production outside Japan goes well, expect the trend of Japanese brands building more and more vehicles beyond its borders to continue as automakers look to bolster profits in the face of a strong yen. "Somebody in this industry has got to demonstrate that you can make luxury outside of Germany and Japan successfully over time," concludes Palmer. We're guessing he doesn't mean Cadillac...
Infiniti moving production out of Japan to counter strong yen originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 19 Dec 2011 18:28:00 EST.
The production version debuted just this week at the Los Angeles Auto Show, and the 2013 Infiniti JX35 doesn't go on sale until spring 2012, but that hasn't stopped Infiniti from putting up an online configurator for its new three-row crossover, or releasing a trio of new videos.

Pricing starts at $41,400 (including a $950 destination charge), but Infiniti is offering some $12,000 worth of packaged options. We managed to load one up to the tune of $55,170. The JX will initially come in just two flavors: Front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive. Both will be powered by a 265-horsepower version of the ubiquitous Nissan 3.5-liter V6 mated to a continuously variable transmission. Infiniti lists an estimated fuel economy at 17 city, 23 highway for both models.

We're thinking six months is a long time to wait, and Infiniti seems to agree, as it's upping the ante for those interested in the new vehicle now. If you reserve a JX through its website and follow it through to purchase, Infiniti will give you his and hers Bose QuietComfort 15 Acoustic Noise Cancelling headphones or a Bose SoundLink Wireless Mobile Speaker.

Free Bose gear aside, it will be interesting to see how the JX fares once it hits the market, alongside the brand's smaller EX and FX crossovers. With Infiniti having pursued a performance-oriented, rear-wheel-drive-based brand strategy for the past several years, this new front-wheel-drive crossover would appear to represent a different direction for the marque. Check out the configurator, but not before clicking past the jump to watch a trio of videos that feature running footage and the JX's interior in detail.
Continue reading Infiniti JX configurator shows up early [w/video]

Infiniti JX configurator shows up early [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 18 Nov 2011 19:00:00 EST.
Infiniti seems to think the world needs another seven-passenger, three-row luxury crossover. And their answer is the JX, first shown this evening in concept form in Pebble Beach before the production model debuts at the LA Auto Show this fall and sales begin in the spring of 2012.

We're hardly enamored with the design, but its specs are sure to appeal to a certain subset of families looking for a premium alternative to a minivan or SUV. Infiniti claims class-leading interior space, with a second row that tilts and slides forward (up to five and half inches) to allow access to a rather commodious set of seats in the way, way back.

Although Infiniti is sticking with its "Inspired Performance" mantra, a V6 fitted with a CVT and sending power through either the front or all four wheels doesn't strike us as particularly sporting. But where the JX should excel is in the features and safety department. In addition to the automaker's Blind Spot Intervention, the JX will come equipped with a new Backup Collision Intervention system, which can detect objects when the crossover is reversing and automatically engage the brakes to avoid a crash.

Other amenities include a 14-speaker Bose stereo system, Infiniti Connection Telematics and the recently launched Personal Assistant program, which provides owners with 24-hour access to a team of living, breathing reps that can do everything from supplying navigation instructions to booking a hotel.

We'll pass final judgement on the styling once we get an eyeful at tonight's reveal, but judging by the shortened time frame between the concept and production model, this Shiro Nakamura design study should be incredibly close to what we'll see in LA this November. Hit the jump for the full details.
Thing is, after looking through all of the teaser images, there isn't much left to hide, save, of course, the interior. Here, the JX shows off the one part of its exterior we hadn't yet seen - the passenger-side front three-quarter. We'll still stand by our earlier judgments and say that this thing is shaping up to be substantially more attractive than the big QX, but we'll wait until we see the real deal at Pebble Beach before making our final assessments.
Infiniti JX shows its fourth corner originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 11 Aug 2011 16:15:00 EST. Today, Infiniti released this image, showing the JX's rear end in its full glory, only furthering our opinion that the automaker's new seven-seat CUV is substantially more attractive than the larger-than-life QX that currently roams the streets. As we've reported earlier, the JX will officially debut as part of this year's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance festivities in Monterey, California, but after scrolling through our high-res image gallery of teaser images, the new crossover's design is hardly a secret anymore. This latest teaser is the third installment in Infiniti's seven-week-long rollout, leading up to the JX's official debut in mid-August. In the first and second images, we got a glimpse at the crossover's headlamps and taillamps, but now, the driver's side is being shown, complete with an Etherea-like design kink in the D-pillar. Infiniti is getting ready to unveil its latest crossover at Pebble Beach in August, and has just released a second teaser shot to give us a glimpse of what to expect.

The JX will join the svelte EX and FX models in Infiniti's crossover range, but offer seven seats in a larger package. This second teaser of the taillight and part of the left flank follows the previous front-end crop and the profile rendering that preceded it, showing us that little bit more as Nissan's luxury division prepares to take a bigger chunk out of Lexus in the premium family hauler game.
Infiniti releases second JX teaser originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 15 Jul 2011 09:57:00 EST.
Infiniti has released an image of the upcoming JX crossover, and the newest family member is posing for the camera like an awkward teen on Facebook. Still, the sweeping family lines are clearly visible, as is an aggressive headlight treatment and a muscular front fender that reminds of company's EX and FX softroader lines.

The seven-passenger Infiniti JX will make its world debut at the 2011 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance next month. A production version of the 2013 JX will arrive at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show. After that, the JX will roll onto dealer lots by the spring of 2012.
Continue reading Infiniti teases seven-passenger JX crossover

Infiniti teases seven-passenger JX crossover originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 07 Jul 2011 11:06:00 EST.
If the calendar shows that a major auto show is upon us, that means it's time for automakers to release teaser images and video. Since the 2011 New York Auto Show is about to open its doors, Infiniti has taken the opportunity to release a hazy sketch of a vehicle to be revealed... at Pebble Beach?

Called the JX, this luxury crossover teases with talk of three-row seating and flowing lines. Infiniti is mum on the details (diminutive press released posted after the jump) but we're going to bet that this isn't the J30 reborn. Crossovers are still a hot commodity, so Infiniti is looking to add another one to its current lineup.

More details will be available when the concept version is shown at the 2011 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. We do know, however, that Infiniti trademarked the names JX20, JX25, JX25h and JX30. This means there could be a wide range of available engines, but it also means Infiniti could be taking the proper precautions to ensure the name they want is available once a powertrain is chosen. The production version will bow at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show before heading to dealer showrooms in the spring of 2012, as a 2013 model.

Automakers try their darnedest to keep future vehicles secret until they're good and ready to reveal them. But more often than not, something leaks. One of the best sources of future vehicle information turns out to be government officials, who have been known - whether through regulation or by accident - to make public the private plans revealed to them by automakers. Vice President Joe Biden's notoriously loose lips are one example; copyright offices are another.

In this case, potential plans for an upcoming new line from Infiniti have been revealed under the name JX. According to Car and Driver, Nissan has applied to trademark the names JX20, JX25, JX25h and JX30 at both the US and Canadian federal patent and trademark offices. Just what these model names signify is a matter of speculation, but if the existing EX, FX and QX are anything to go by, we should be looking at a crossover.

The numeric designations suggest the potential availability of a 2.0-liter four, a 2.5-liter V6, a hybrid and a 3.0-liter V6 (potentially a diesel), indicating that the JX would likely be rather compact in size. Sources speculate on a possible premium variant of the quirky Nissan Juke. But Nissan, for its part, reportedly claims the trademark registrations - like the XW35, PX35 and DX35 filed previously - are precautionary, registered in the event they should need them. We'll just have to wait and see.
Done up the old-world way -- with real metal and skill -- and the results for all that effort are decidedly weird. They can call it a coupe all they want, but its certainly more El Camino than sleek GT. The JX moniker is a little strange too, as the Chrysler Concorde that this car began life as was an LH model. The JX is the designation for the Sebring convertible from '96-00.

No matter, this metallic tangerine wonder has had old school bodywork techniques applied to make it a landaulet-looking contraption. The car was built as a movie car, though Dimora is cagey about where we might ultimately see the JX's film debut. The write up at the Dimora website is filled with hyperbolic nuggets. Our favorite gem is this one, regarding the fitting of a 3.2-liter V6: "We replaced the stock engine with a 260 HP 3.2 liter V6 from ATK, which is backed by a three-year unlimited mileage warranty. We added a "Tornado" vortex component to the air intake. MPG was increased 10% and horsepower grew by 10%. We have not had a dyno test on the engine..." Uhh, what?! We're not sure how you can measure a 10% horsepower increase (from an intake restriction, no less) without, you know, measuring it.
