Nissan has made three announcements, all of which intend to sharpen the global significance and sales of its NISMO performance arm. Calling it "a new era for NISMO as its global performance car and motorsports brand," Carlos Ghosn cut the ribbon on the new, larger, nicer NISMO headquarters in Yokohama, Japan. For the first time since the division was founded in 1984, all of its employees are located in one place that was dubbed "a hothouse of passion and performance." Sign us up.

There, the team will start overhauling Nissan's entire range with NISMO models. The Juke NISMO is right around the corner for the US market, the second generation of the 370Z NISMO is coming for 2014, the first GT-R NISMO is being developed, and after that will come "a range of affordable performance Nissan models from small cars to flagship sports cars" - a new model every year. The expanded product line will mean that markets that haven't had access to NISMO's works will finally be able to buy them.

The last big news is that from now on NISMO will manage every one of Nissan's global motorsports programs, and its largest initiative will be prepping an entry for Le Mans in 2014. While Nissan has left the DeltaWing project, it hasn't walked away from experimental racers: the brand aims to have "a pioneering Nissan race car showcasing electric technology" ready in 15 months that shows "a new approach to innovation and excitement."

The 2013 Nissan Juke Nismo has officially bowed at the 2013 Chicago Auto Show. Wearing a full body kit that serves up 37-percent more downforce than the standard front and rear fascias, the tuned hatchback also comes equipped with larger 18-inch wheels and a lowered suspension. Up front, LED daytime running lights join the festivities as well as contrasting side-view mirror covers and wider fender flares. Inside, buyers can expect to find a new sports steering wheel clad in Alcantara, as well as a set of Nismo seats stitched with red accents.

Nismo also cranked up the power on the Juke's turbocharged direct-injection 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine. The Juke Nismo delivers 197 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, compared to the 188 hp and 177 lb-ft available in stock configuration. Buyers can have the engine with either a six-speed manual transmission or CVT gearbox, and the Juke Nismo can also be had with either all-wheel drive or front-wheel drive. Check out the full press release below for more information.
Continue reading 2013 Nissan Juke Nismo is the runabout we've always wanted

2013 Nissan Juke Nismo is the runabout we've always wanted originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 07 Feb 2013 11:22:00 EST.
It's hard to find more giggles for your crossover dollar than the Juke - regardless of how you feel about the way it looks, the singularly styled nichemobile from Nissan is very entertaining to drive. Yet we've always felt that the platform had more in it, and evidently its Japanese parent agrees, having recently bracketed the googly-eyed turbocharged CUV with a new Nismo model and the barking mad built-to-order Juke R. At present, neither the Juke Nismo or the GT-R-powered Juke R are sold in North America, but the former has already been confirmed for sale here.

Even when it does reach our shores, there will still be a heck of a lot of whitespace between the mild performance upgrades of the standard Nismo and the half-mill R model, and to hear the UK's Car tell it, Nissan has plans to plug that gap, too. According to its report, the automaker will shortly offer a Juke Nismo RC that will have roughly 20 horsepower more than the basic Nismo (which itself has 197 hp, nine more than the base Juke). The RC will apparently feature a lower, stiffer suspension, upgraded brakes and a unique exhaust and intake for a snarlier soundtrack. Both front-and all-wheel drive models are planned, as are manual and CVT transmission choices.

No word yet on the RC's pricing or even North American availability, but the regular-strength Juke Nismo is expected to arrive shortly, and Nissan is also said to have big plans for its performance nameplate, so we wouldn't rule it out.

Car has already gotten its mitts on a few early prototypes of the RC, and if you're interested in hearing what they think, you can read more by checking out the link below.
Nissan Juke to get higher-performance Nismo RC model originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 22 Jan 2013 17:30:00 EST. Even the humble Leaf EV and hefty NV350 have received a little love from designers and engineers. The Juke Nismo will share the stage with creations like the Leaf Nismo Performance Package and the GT-R Nismo GT3. That last beast debuted in 2012 and boasts more engine output and enhanced aerodynamics while still complying with FIA GT3 regulations.

But our favorite of the bunch has to be the NV350 Caravan Rider Transporter. Custom-built for TAS, the commercial van was penned to toe the line between a hard-working commercial van and a luxurious leisure machine. We dig it.

Nissan is also showing off a number of race cars, including the Motul Autech GT-R of Super GT fame and the company's wild DeltaWing.
To celebrate the launch of The Dark Night Rises on DVD and Blu-Ray in the UK, Nissan has created this one-off special edition of the Juke Nismo. But instead of plunking a price tag on the hotter Juke, Nissan is giving away its Nismo crossover to one lucky winner after. Interested parties can take the automaker's Thrill Test and enter for a chance to win the one-of-one Juke.

The Dark Night Rises Juke builds on the sport-tuned Nismo model, packing a 197-horsepower, 1.6-lite turbocharged inline-four, mated to a six-speed manual transmission. Specific enhancements for this one-off include matte black paint, a shark fin antenna (yep), aluminum bat badges on the front and rear and red accents along the body. There are a whole host of bat logos on the suede-trimmed interior, and a clever up-lighting system projects that bat logo onto the Juke's headliner, as well.

Nissan is reportedly working toward turning its Nismo arm into a legitimate sub-brand. According to TheDetroitBureau.com, the Japanese automaker plans to pattern its performance wing after Mercedes-Benz's AMG, which means that moving forward, every vehicle with a Nismo badge will also pack a sizable jump in performance. Engineers will work to sharpen the suspension and brakes while offering more horsepower and revised aesthetics. In addition, Nissan will seek to burnish Nismo's credibility and visibility by putting forth bigger efforts in various motorsports series.

While speaking in an interview, Nissan global marketing boss Simon Sproule noted that Japanese brands have historically missed out on exploiting their performance history. Much of that struggle has come in the form of a lack of consistency from brands like Lexus and Infiniti with their F-Sport and IPL efforts, respectively.

Sproule says Nissan is now looking at a line of low-volume vehicles, the first of which will be the Juke Nismo set to launch next year. While the executive declined to comment on which products could be next, he stressed each vehicle will have to meet a few criteria before being branded as Nismo models. Those include significant design changes inside and out as well as a 10-percent bump in horsepower and different ride and handling calibrations. Among the possible visual cues for Nismo models? Red mirror caps as well as more aggressive grilles and front fascias. Sounds good by us, but we imagine those tweaks won't come cheap.
Nissan outlines Nismo's expansion and credentials originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 30 Nov 2012 17:46:00 EST.
First shown as a concept at the Tokyo Motor Show and first unveiled in production trim at this year's 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 2013 Nissan Juke Nismo has just had its first in-person meeting with the Autoblog team at the Paris Motor Show. While not quite as extreme as its Juke R brother - not having a GT-R drivetrain kind of takes the edge off - the Juke Nismo nonetheless kicks the standard car up a few notches to become even more of an enthusiast's plaything than a quasi-crossover.

With the laying on of hands from Nismo, Nissan's in-house performance tuning and motorsports arm, this Juke benefits from a host of improvements that up its performance game. The changes begin with a complete Nismo aero package that includes new front and rear bumpers, wider wheel arches, side skirts, rear spoiler and front grille. Eighteen-inch alloys wheels get tucked under those new fenders, while the interior benefits from a lavish swathing of grippy Alcantara on the new sport seats and steering wheel.

Nissan says that the Juke's direct-injected turbo 1.6-liter four-cylinder has been modified for Nismo duty, presumably for more power, though the company is still keeping tight-lipped about new power figures. The 1.6-liter as it stands in the base Juke produces a healthy 188 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque, but even if the engine weren't upgraded, Nismo has also addressed performance from a handling perspective by fitting the Juke with a stiffer suspension and revised steering, along with tweaking its traction control and torque vectoring systems.

Launching in Europe early next year, the Juke Nismo will then be made available in Japan before finally making its way to North America at a yet-to-be-determined later date. Pricing is still a mystery as well, but it's safe to say the Nismo will probably be at least a few thousand dollars over the standard model.
2013 Nissan Juke Nismo closer to coming to America originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 28 Sep 2012 11:30:00 EST.
The insane automotive concoction that is the Juke R has been doing its thing, beating the doors off supercars, or at the very least giving them a run for their collective money.

If you recall, this Nissan creation may have the body of a nimble runabout crossover, but it rides on a hacked-up GT-R chassis. With its fire-breathing 485-horsepower twin-turbo V6 and stupendously advanced all-wheel-drive system, the Juke R is Godzilla in black sheep's clothing.

To see where this high-powered grocery-getter really stacks up in the supercar world, Car and Driver matched the Juke-R head-to-head with one of the best in the game; the Porsche 911 GT2 RS. Car and Driver European correspondent Jethro Bovingdon hopped behind the wheel of the mad crossover first. In Bovingdon's words "everywhere you look, and everything you touch is GT-R, but you are in a Juke and about two feet higher." He is delightfully pleased with the ride, and says its even more aggressive than the Juke-R, due to the short wheelbase.

Bovingdon point to the extra weight as a potential issue in high-speed runs, but concedes that the Juke-R is "a massive amount of fun."

By comparison, the 911 GT2 RS is a stripped-down, rear-wheel-drive, 611-horsepower monster, operated via a traditional six-speed manual. Its a purist's car, stacked up against a high-tech, all-wheel-drive Frankenstein.

The GT2 RS, in comparison to the Juke R, can be unruly in wet conditions. With traction control off, effort was made to warm up the tires. Did it pay off? You're just going to have to watch the video below to find out which car is faster in the C/D test.
Continue reading GT-R-powered Nissan Juke-R lines up against Porsche 911 GT2 RS

GT-R-powered Nissan Juke-R lines up against Porsche 911 GT2 RS originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 22 Aug 2012 19:59:00 EST.
It seems that Nissan Europe has all the fun, and just maybe, all the crazy. When they built the Juke-R, that was a head-turner but it was still Earthly, at least a little bit. The Juke Box is just plain nuts. Working with dance music icons Ministry of Sound and Martin Audio, the trio created a Juke with a specially fabricated sound system to provide the same aural intensity found within The Box at 2 a.m. - The Box being the Ministry of Sound's especially fabricated room-within-a-room at its Covent Garden club said to have the world's best acoustics (and a specially sprung floor to reduce dancer fatigue).

After doing a tour of Europe with its 19-kilowatt system and 150 dB of brain crushing strength, the Juke Box is going on sale. Three thousand of them will be available to customers starting in September, in either Metallic Black and Solid White or exteriors with exclusive trim like white wheels, door handles and center console. An Apple iPod Touch preloaded with Nissan and Ministry of Sound video and music content will also be a part of the program. Nissan hasn't said how much the Juke Box package will add, but it can be added to any engine and drivetrain combo.

The model will be officially introduced at the 2012 Moscow International Auto Salon later this month. In the meantime, there's a press release below with more details and a couple of videos explaining how it was all done.
Continue reading Nissan Juke Ministry of Sound edition hits the techno beat [w/video]

Nissan Juke Ministry of Sound edition hits the techno beat [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 21 Aug 2012 19:00:00 EST.
Nissan has kind of made polarizing design language its thing. From the Cube to the Leaf to the Quest, the company's stylists seem entirely disinterested in bowing to convention unless they're crafting a model for the milquetoast middle of the market. The Juke is no exception to this rule, a dynamite little firecracker of a crossover but one that from certain angles looks like it comes from the factory pre-crashed. And we're not so sure that a new appearance package offered for the 2013 model year helps much.

Called the Midnight Edition, the $1,200 option bundles a new 17-inch wheel design with a roof spoiler and mirror caps, all in black. It goes on sale in September, and is available across the model lineup.

Auto Express has confirmed that Nissan is planning a slew of performance models under the Nismo wing, including a number of high-performance RS variants.

Nissan executive VP of product planning Andy Palmer told the UK magazine that the Nismo brand should be considered "an affordable alternative to Mercedes' AMG division," and continued, "Nismo versions will get a power hike of 15 percent, but the focus will be on distinctive styling." The Nismo Juke will be the first of these models to arrive early next year. It will boast a unique body kit, as well as 18-inch wheels and bright red side view mirrors. Underhood, the 1.6-liter mill will be massaged to produce 215 horsepower - an increase of 28 hp.

According to Palmer, "We'll also tune the suspension and steering, so customers can get more out of the power they have."

Next to get the Nismo treatment is the all-electric Nissan Leaf. Originally shown at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show, it will feature blue accents instead of the red found on other Nismo models. Power will jump to 125 from the standard 110 horsepower.

2013 will also see the introduction of a Nismo variant of the GT-R, as well as the latest version of the Nismo Z, which is already sold here in the U.S.

If you have the insatiable need for speed, Nissan will be unleashing an RS range of models, boasting track-focused performance. Palmer indicated that there would be a Juke RS making 270 horsepower. It was also noted that there would be RS versions of the GT-R and 370Z. We can't wait to see this onslaught of performance that Nissan has in store for the next year or two. We'll keep you updated on how these models progress.
Nissan working on high-performance Nismo, RS models originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 13 Aug 2012 16:28:00 EST.
With the BRZ/FR-S selling like mad, it's no surprise other carmakers are looking jealously at the sales numbers. If rumors are to be believed, Nissan is no exception.

Motor Trend says it's been told Nissan is working on its own sports coupe to compete with Toyota and Subaru. It's not the first time we've heard such plans, though. Back in 2008, Nissan was reportedly working on a 240SX successor but as the economy started running out of gas, so did that project.

Nissan did, however, show off the Compact Sport Concept at the 2011 Shanghai Motor Show pictured above. Looking very much Juke-like but a bit shorter, and, well, compact.

Coincidentally, rumors say the new plan is to use the Juke platform. Inside the company the project is being called the "Mini-Z," despite the fact it would almost certainly be front-wheel or all-wheel drive. That would help differentiate it from the BRZ/FR-S, but would certainly turn off those of us with sportier intentions.

Nissan's 190-horsepower, 1.6-liter turbo was underhood in the concept, and if used in the production car, would have fewer horses but a wider torque band than its competitors from Toyota and Subaru.

Motor Trend says the U.S. probably wouldn't be the initial target market, but instead China, Japan and Europe would be first with American buyers still in consideration. The mag's source says the Mini-Z should be close in size to Honda's CR-Z and should start production sometime late next year. Check out Nissan's press release on the Compact Sport Concept below.
Continue reading Nissan working on Juke-based BRZ/FR-S rival?

Nissan working on Juke-based BRZ/FR-S rival? originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 17 Jul 2012 18:55:00 EST.
Ministry of Sound has grown over the past two decades into an internationally renowned brand, including a record label, fashion line and series of consumer electronics. But it all started with a single room, designed by Martin Audio, that is said to have some of the best accoustics and finest sound systems in the world. Now Martin has applied the same formula to create the Nissan Juke Box.

The concept car packs a 19-kilowatt system with two 18-inch subwoofers capable of producing a staggering 150 dB. If that number doesn't mean anything to you, consider that it's louder than a 747 at take-off. Seriously. The Juke Box will tour Europe over the next six months, starting at Le Mans this weekend. If you're stuck on this side of the Atlantic, you can check it out in the image gallery above and the pair of video clips below.
Continue reading Nissan partners with Ministry of Sound for one-of-a-kind Juke Box [w/videos]

Nissan partners with Ministry of Sound for one-of-a-kind Juke Box [w/videos] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 17 Jun 2012 18:32:00 EST.
Sprightly as it is, the Nissan Juke manages to straddle the line between hatchback and crossover with aplomb. As such, it's one of the most suitable cute-utes for tuning, and that point hasn't lost on Nissan itself. The UK-based racing division of the Japanese automaker transformed the controversially-styled mini-CUV into the tarmac-munching Juke-R. But if that elite vehicle's stratospheric price tag turns you on and away at the same time, another Nissan division might have the answer for you.

What we're talking about is the new Juke Nismo. Having showcased a concept at the Tokyo Motor Show show last year, the company's performance arm is unveiling the production-spec performance crossover this coming weekend at the 24 Hours of Le Mans - an event with an unprecedented number of Nissan-powered vehicles on the grid, including the experimental DeltaWing prototype.

The enhancements to the Nismo model over the stock Juke include a more aggressive aero package complete with new front and rear bumpers, wider wheel arches, side skirts, a tailgate spoiler and a new grille. The flared fenders house wider 18-inch alloys, while the interior has been retrofitted with sportier control surfaces and red-stitched, suede-covered sport buckets with greater lateral support.

Just like the standard Juke, the engine is quoted as a 1.6-liter turbocharged, direct-injection four, though output figures have not been released (the North American spec Juke rings up 188 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque). The Nismo is enhanced, however, by a stiffer suspension, revised steering geometry and performance-tuned traction control with torque vectoring.

While the Juke Nismo will be available in Europe from the start of the new year - about six and a half months from now - Nissan has confirmed that the vehicle will be made available in its own Japanese Domestic Market and (most importantly) in the United States at an as-yet undisclosed later date. In the meantime, you can admire from afar in the high-res image gallery above and the press release below.
Continue reading Nissan unveils Juke Nismo hot-ute at Le Mans, will come to U.S.

Nissan unveils Juke Nismo hot-ute at Le Mans, will come to U.S. originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 13 Jun 2012 09:26:00 EST.
There's something about the boffins over at Nissan - particularly those working at its racing headquarters in the UK. We're not quite sure what it is. Oh, right: they're bonkers. Absolutely off their rockers, in the best way possible. How else would you explain the decision to take an entry-level crossover and swap out its powertrain for that of a supercar?

We're talking, of course, about the Juke-R, the 480-horsepower demon cockroach from hell. After racing it against a field of supercars in Dubai, Nissan has taken the Juke-R to a decidedly different setting - an ice track near the former Winter Olympics site in Lillehammer, Norway - and set it loose.

And if that wasn't quite enough, the Japanese automaker didn't put it in the hands of an veteran ice racer - say, the four-time Formula One World Champion who drives for its sister company in the Andros Trophy, they gave it over to its gamer-turned-racer Lucas Ordonez who, being from Spain, had never driven on ice before. Sounds sane to us. Scroll on down to see the results in the brief video clip.
Continue reading Nissan Juke-R goes ice fishing in Norway

Nissan Juke-R goes ice fishing in Norway originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 24 May 2012 12:32:00 EST.
It's a rare thing, but every now and then, our automotive wishes come true. Nissan has announced that it will produce the heinous Juke-R in very limited numbers after a warm reception in Dubai. The company has already received three orders so far, and Nissan says it will begin taking additional orders in the next four weeks.

Each model will be built to order using model year 2012 drivetrain components, meaning there's a modest bump in power - 545 horsepower versus the original Juke-R's 480. As you may recall, the first Juke-R used bits cannibalized from a 2010 GT-R. How much will the machine cost? Nissan isn't saying, but we'd be willing to bet the Juke-R will carry an MSRP a bit higher than the GT-R.

With 545 horsepower crammed into the quirky lines of the Juke, the machine is unlike anything else on the road. Nissan has also worked up a quick video to commemorate the production announcement. The clip focuses on the showdown between the Juke-R and several supercars in Dubai. Scroll down to check it out alongside the full press release.
Continue reading Nissan Juke-R to get limited production run [w/video]

Nissan Juke-R to get limited production run [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 03 May 2012 11:13:00 EST. The otherworldly curvy sheetmetal of the Nissan Juke has always seemed so far off the map as to appear more French than Japanese. After all, Gallic designers have a long history of creating bold and polarizing forms. So it comes as little surprise that AutoExpress is reporting that Nissan will let its corporate siblings at Renault borrow the fun-to-drive Juke crossover for a model of their own.

At least in the UK, the unnamed model will replace the slow-selling Koleos CUV. AutoExpress has worked up some renderings, and notably, they swap out the Juke's unusual front lighting for something a bit more traditional and more along the lines of the 2011 Geneva Motor Show Captur showcar.

Earlier speculation had the Captur coming to market riding atop Renault's closely related Clio architecture, but if this new report is accurate, Renault probably won't have to invest as much to bring the vehicle to market. Check out the full renderings at the link below, and sit tight, because AE doesn't expect the subcompact ute to arrive until sometime next year.
Renault to get own version of Nissan Juke originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 02 Apr 2012 14:01:00 EST.
Now that Nissan UK is finished with the dog-and-pony promotional show for the Nissan Juke-R, it's free to do what we've all been waiting for: hand it over to The Fourth Estate for proper testing. AutoExpress was the first in line, and they didn't waste the chance, pitting Faust's CUV against the car that made it possible, the Nissan GT-R, around the Bedford Autodrome circuit.

We could tell you more, but this isn't the time for words - the long-awaited action is in the video after the jump. Still want more? There's an article to go with it over on AutoExpress.
Continue reading Showdown: Nissan Juke-R pitted against GT-R on track

Showdown: Nissan Juke-R pitted against GT-R on track originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 14 Mar 2012 12:30:00 EST. Nissan North America is recalling 2011 and 2012 Nissan Juke, Infiniti M and Infiniti QX models over a fuel pressure sensor issue. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, it's possible that the sensors weren't tightened properly, which could lead to the sensor coming loose over time and an increased risk of a fire due to leaking fuel.
The recall begins on March 19. Nissan will notify owners, who can take their vehicles to the dealer to be repaired free of charge. A bulletin from NHTSA that has more information is after the jump.
Continue reading Nissan recalls Juke, Infiniti M and QX for possible fuel leaks

Nissan recalls Juke, Infiniti M and QX for possible fuel leaks originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 28 Feb 2012 10:01:00 EST.
When is a Nissan Juke not a Nissan Juke? When it's the 480-horsepower, Godzilla-powered Juke-R, that's when. Then it's a supercar-beater. And to prove the point, Nissan UK took its one-off super-crossover down to Dubai for a little street racing action.

So what did Nissan pit its Juke-R against? No, not other crossovers, but a pack of the leanest, meanest supercars on the market: the Ferrari 458 Italia, Lamborghini Gallardo and Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. We first saw video footage shot from the sidelines a couple of weeks ago, but since the publicity stunt proved so popular, Nissan responded by releasing an official, high-quality version, complete with in-car footage and plenty of tire squealing. Follow the jump to check it out.
Continue reading Nissan releases official footage of Juke-R supercar street race in Dubai

Nissan releases official footage of Juke-R supercar street race in Dubai originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 31 Jan 2012 12:32:00 EST.
