According to an Automotive News report, Chrysler Group is saying adios to Toluca, Mexico, and moving production of its next-generation Dodge Journey to Detroit, Michigan, when the model is replaced in 2016. The change of venue, discovered through sources at suppliers, would mean the mid-size crossover would be built alongside the next-generation Chrysler 200 sedan, due in 2014, at the automaker's Sterling Heights Assembly Plant. It would also leave the Toluca plant without a product after 2016.

Chrysler has been assembling its Journey in Mexico to facilitate exporting to Europe and South America (where it's rebadged as the Fiat Freemont). However, shifting production to the States would allow for higher sticker prices in those markets, according to current trade agreements. In addition, the move would consolidate the automaker's CUSW-platform vehicles (e.g. Dodge Journey, Chrysler 200, Dodge Dart, Jeep Cherokee) to three assembly plants, all geographically close, easing supply chains and lowering costs. Chrysler has not commented on the report.
Dodge Journey, Mexico to go their separate ways originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 02 Jun 2013 17:01:00 EST. Episode #317 of the Autoblog Podcast is here, and this week, Dan Roth, Jeff Ross and Michael Harley bookend the other podcast topics with a pair from the Montreal Auto Show, the Mitsubishi Mirage and Honda Gear concept, and in between we talk about Toyota building all its US-market cars stateside, Hyundai building a Nurburgring test facility, Sergio Marchionne's latest words about Alfa Romeo, Dodge Dart powertrains and the future of Chrysler vans. Some chatter about the Ford Atlas concept finishes up the meat of the 'cast and then we wrap with your questions. For those of you who hung with us live on our UStream channel, thanks for taking the time. Keep reading for our Q&A module for you to scroll through and follow along, too.
Chrysler has gotten on pretty well in the post-bankruptcy world, with a big assist from its newest master. But while Chrysler has seen dramatic improvement thanks to refreshes and a few new models, the next couple years could be very exciting.

Automobile Magazine recently got the chance to talk cars with CEO Sergio Marchionne, and the charismatic leader apparently had plenty to say. Among the top headlines are the reported upcoming death of the Dodge Avenger in 2014 and Dodge Durango in 2016. We're thinking nobody will miss the Avenger, but the Durango sounds like a bit of a bummer.

That's until we see that the Durango will be replaced by a Jeep Wagoneer; a rehash of an old name based on the same platform and engine choices of the Dodge three-row utility. The Durango platform will also spawn the Maserati Kubang (which will likely be named something else), a move that should go a long way toward helping Maserati hit 50,000 units per year.

The Wagoneer is just the tipping point for new Jeeps on the way. Among the other models expected are an all-new Liberty in 2013 followed by a new Patriot in 2014 and a Fiat 500-based subcompact crossover tentatively named Jeepster.

The Chrysler brand should also look a bit more interesting as the 200 gets re-imagined for 2013 and the Town & Country morphs into a crossover in 2015. The Chrysler brand will reportedly also get a Dodge Dart-based 100 compact, but not until 2016 or later, which seems like a long way off.

Among the other interesting vehicles expected to bow are as many as six Alfa Romeo models including the 4C Coupe, the next MiTo, the Giulietta and an unnamed crossover. And then there will be a smattering of new Fiat 500 models including the 500L and the XL, which will reportedly feature seating for up to seven.

The SRT lineup will also be getting a sheetmetal injection with the addition of the Dart SRT4 and the Journey SRT6. Now if Sergio Marchionne can make the Journey exciting, he'll be up for auto executive of the decade.
Dodge Durango, Avenger models will be discontinued, SRT model for Journey planned originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 05 Jun 2012 10:00:00 EST. Dodge Journey) in black" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2011/07/fiat-freemont-lead.jpg" style="margin-top: 4px; margin-bottom: 4px; width: 630px; height: 420px; " />

Fiat, in an attempt to make its purchase of Chrysler more profitable, has been marketing rebadged Dodge and Chrysler models in Europe with mixed results.

Europeans apparently love the Fiat Freemont, known as a Dodge Journey here in the States. Fiat sold almost 6,500 of the crossovers over there in the first quarter and hopes to move 30,000 by year's end. Sales were helped by Fiat's large European dealer network as well as an MSRP lower than the model it replaced. Since the Journey is built in Mexico, it can be imported into Europe tariff-free, which helps keep the sticker price lower.

On the other hand, sales of the Lancia Thema (Chrysler 300) and Lancia Voyager (Dodge Grand Caravan) are not doing so well due to several factors. One is the limited reach of the Lancia brand outside Italy. Then there's the 10 percent import tariff since they're both built in Canada, a yearly 500 euro luxury tax (about $630 USD) on the Thema, and a limited advertising budget for the two cars.
Only 1,342 Voyagers were sold in Europe in the first quarter of this year, which means the 11,000 unit goal for the year will probably be missed. Lancia sold only 480 Themas during the same period, well short of the 2,500 Fiat had hoped to sell.
Rebadged Dodge, Chrysler model sales a mixed bag in Europe originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 18 May 2012 15:58:00 EST.
Chrysler has issued a recall affecting a small number of 2012 Dodge Journey and 2012 Fiat 500 models built between October 24 and 26 of this year. These models - about 340 in total - are being recalled due to contaminated brake fluid that was put in during the vehicles' assembly. According to a report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, these vehicles "may experience a degradation of the sealing components within the brake system."

To solve the problem, Chrysler dealers will replace all of the vehicle's components that come in contact with the hydraulic braking fluid. Of course, this service will be done free of charge, and the official safety recall is expected to begin during the month of December. Follow the jump for NHTSA's official release.
Continue reading 2012 Dodge Journey, Fiat 500 recalled over contaminated brake fluid

2012 Dodge Journey, Fiat 500 recalled over contaminated brake fluid originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 28 Nov 2011 18:45:00 EST.
Can't an automaker hide three crossovers in the wilderness in an effort to give them away without any problems? Apparently not, as Chrysler's contest to give away three Dodge Journey models randomly placed around the U.S. has been met with controversy. The winner of the second Journey, found in Oklahoma, is one Brad Neidy, who happens to be a Troop Leader for the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

The controversy sprung up after followers of the contest pointed out that, as a highway patrolman, Neidy may have had an unfair advantage in finding the crossover prize. Automotive reports that the reason given was that the OHP may have coordinated road closures for filming purposes.

Neither Chrysler or the OHP are going into details at this point, but Neidy has reportedly decided that receiving the new Journey isn't worth the hassle. The officer has evidently informed Chrysler that he will not accept the free vehicle in spite of the fact that he found it.

Chrysler did release a statement about the matter, stating that the second Journey winner declined the prize, adding "Dodge is reviewing program rules and will provide updates soon."

Dodge is giving its customers a chance to win a 2012 Journey - one of three, actually - provided they're able to go out and find it. The automaker's new marketing campaign calls the Journey a "Search engine for the real world," and this new take on the traditional car giveaway relies heavily on YouTube for broadcasting clues on the whereabouts of each Journey.

As you might have heard already from some of Dodge's new television commercials, two of the three Journeys have already been found - one outside of San Francisco near Lake Tahoe and the second near Cheyenne, Oklahoma. The third will be parked somewhere in the eastern part of the United States, and Dodge will begin publishing clues to its location this Saturday, June 24.

If you want to participate, you'll need to visit Dodge's YouTube channel at that time (www.youtube.com/Dodge) and watch the 24/7 live feed of the last Journey just sitting there. Dodge will release clues over the live feed, as well as a number of additional video clues that should get you closer and closer to figuring out the final Journey's location where it's just sitting there parked, waiting for you to find it.

We've included Dodge's the aforementioned commercials after the jump along with the official press release. If you're really going try to find the final Journey, you may want to look over the rules a little more closely.
Continue reading Only one free Dodge Journey left in "You find it, you win it" marketing stunt

Only one free Dodge Journey left in "You find it, you win it" marketing stunt originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 20 Sep 2011 18:33:00 EST.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee isn't the only Chrysler model receiving a price cut next year, as the 2012 Dodge Journey is set to get significantly less expensive, as well. Chrysler has cut the price on the people-mover by $3,250 starting next year. That puts the vehicle's MSRP at $18,995 before the $750 delivery fee is tacked onto the bottom line. The American Value Package offers a five-seat configuration for that stack of cash along with a push-button ignition, satellite radio, seven air bags and a touch-screen media interface. Unfortunately, AVP trim is only available with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and four-speed automatic. The excellent 3.6-liter V6 is still available on other models, however.

Those who need a little extra space can add a third row for an extra $1,000. Even so, that still gives the Journey the honor of being the least-expensive seven-passenger vehicle on the American market at the moment. While we're glad to see Dodge cutting its prices, we're more ecstatic about the news that the automaker has finally ditched its confusing tangle of trim monikers for a slightly more comprehensible system. Moving forward, all Dodge models will fall under AVP, SE, SXT, Crew and R/T designations. Hit the jump to check the full press blast.
Continue reading 2012 Dodge Journey also gets $3,000 price slash

2012 Dodge Journey also gets $3,000 price slash originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 01 Sep 2011 16:31:00 EST.
If you've just purchased a new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, you have our sincere congratulations, but you also might not want to read this post any further.

The 2012 Grand Cherokee, which goes on sale next month, will reportedly benefit from a $3,220 price decrease versus the 2011 model. This means that the base Laredo trim level with two-wheel drive will now carry an MSRP of $26,995. It also means that the resale value of your 2011 model has likely just taken a pretty severe whack.

Jeep introduced the all-new Grand Cherokee for the 2011 model year, and thus, only minor changes have been made for the 2012 model. The 5.7-liter V8 is now mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, rather than the aging five-speed, and models equipped with the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 will now come with electro-hydraulic power-assisted steering. These enhancements are good for very minor increases in fuel economy - likely no more than a single mpg here or there.

The folks at Kicking Tires point out that the lower base price may be a reflection of higher price points for option packages and the removal of once-standard equipment. For example, the 2011 Grand Cherokee Laredo came standard with an eight-way power seat, whereas the 2012 model does not. What's more, the Laredo's leather seating package now costs a whopping $5,300 instead of $4,000.

In the wholly owned Fiat stable are its eponymous brand, along with Lancia, Abarth, Maserati and Alfa Romeo - plus, as of relatively recently, all of the Chrysler brands. According to Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne, of all of those brands, the one with the greatest global cachet is Jeep. Marchionne believes that Alfa had global chops as well, but Jeep remains "first and foremost."

And while Marchionne remains keen on creating global production synergies with his expanding automotive empire, there is at least one sacred cow. According to a new Ward's Auto report, the compulsively sweater-clad CEO has a few words that will make builders of the Jeep Wrangler in Toledo happy - he thinks the legendary SUV's American heritage is too important to risk assembling it in any other country. This is heartening news, as recent chatter had referred to growing global demand putting a strain on the Ohio plant, leading some to think that a satellite production facility could be established elsewhere in the world.
Marchionne insists Jeep Wrangler to stay American-made originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 28 Jul 2011 13:31:00 EST.
Chrysler has issued a recall that spans across its family lines. A missing or incorrectly installed rivet on the steering column could result in a loss of control.

The recall affects the following 2011 model year vehicles:

 Chrysler 200

 Jeep Wrangler

In total, 11,351 Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep vehicles need to be inspected by a dealer. Affected vehicles will have their steering column inspected and adjusted as needed, at no cost to owners. The recall will begin this month. Click past the jump for the full National Highway Traffic Safety Administration bulletin.

*UPDATE: Chrysler has corrected NHTSA on the effect of the missing or incorrectly installed rivet. This issue has no affect on a vehicle's steering ability, but could cause the steering column to improperly bear the driver's weight in the event of a front-end crash.
Continue reading Chrysler recalling 11,000 new vehicles over steering concern *UPDATE

Chrysler recalling 11,000 new vehicles over steering concern *UPDATE originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 16 Jun 2011 11:01:00 EST.
We saw the Fiat Freemont first at this past March's Geneva Motor Show, and the newly pleasant people carrier's configurator has just hit the intertubes in Italian. An English-language version for the UK market isn't happening yet, so you'll have to have fun seeing what Europe can get on its Dodge Journey that we can't, and vice-versa by clicking here.

Deliveries start this month (June 2011) with a front-wheel driver with six-speed manual shifter (i.e. fun!). The initial engines available for the Freemont will be two variants of the four-cylinder 2.0-liter MultiJet II direct-injected turbodiesel from Fiat Powertrain Technologies. A 138-horsepower version with 258 pound-feet of torque between 1,750 and 2,000 rpm (with at least 220 lb-ft on tap throughout the idle-to-4,000 rpm usable rev range) has a base price of €25,700 ($37,300), and in special Urban trim hits €27,200 ($39,500), both with all Italian taxes included. The 168-hp tune with the same torque peaking from 1,750 to 2,500 rpm starts at €27,200 ($39,500) and in Urban garb, it commands €28,700 ($41,700). Knock around 20 percent off all those prices, and you'd have what the approximate U.S. showroom price would be.

Later in the year, an all-wheel-drive version carrying buyers' choice of either the 168-hp MultiJet diesel or a top-of-the-line 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 with 272 hp will be available, but pricing hasn't been revealed yet. An automatic transmission is also expected to join the options sheet at that time.

While the Freemont moniker (perhaps named after the new Fiat of Fremont dealership in California?) and sales potential in the European context very much confuse us, we still like the Journey as it is adapted all'italiana. The Dodge-in-drag's campaign tagline translates to "All the Cars You Want," meaning essentially "Whatever car you'd like it to be." Could that come across as "good at many things, great at none"? We hope not.
Fiat Freemont (Italy's Dodge Journey) configurator now online originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 10 Jun 2011 08:27:00 EST.
Fiat currently owns 25 percent of Chrysler, but that stake will reportedly jump to 30 percent in the next couple weeks. Automotive News reports that the Italian automaker is weeks away from satisfying additional requirements needed to bump the ownership stake by another five percent.

Unnamed sources claim that Fiat has already met a requirement that states that Chrysler receives $1.5 billion of its revenue outside of North America. The next step is to offer Chrysler vehicles to 90 percent of Fiat's Latin American dealers. Fiat will reportedly meet that goal by rebadging Chrysler vehicles as Fiats at Latin American dealerships. One vehicle that will reportedly receive the rebadge treatment is the Dodge Journey, which will be built in Mexico and renamed the Fiat Freemont. Fiat currently holds the largest share of the emerging Brazil market, with a substantial 22.3 percent share.

Fiat will receive another five percent of Chrysler by building a Fiat-based product in the U.S. that hits 40 miles per gallon or better. If Fiat wants to increase its share to an absolute majority of 51 percent, the automaker will need to fork over $1.14 billion by the end of the year. If the automaker waits until 2012, that number will jump to $1.37 billion.
Autoblog Podcast #224 is here. It's staffed this week by stalwarts Chris Shunk, Zach Bowman and Dan Roth. We talk about Top Gear and its ongoing fight with Tesla Motors, Volkswagen's decision to unveil the latest Beetle with MTV as a partner, the new BMW M5 Concept headed for Shanghai, Bugatti saying "go" to the Galibier and the possibility of a Hemi-powered Jeep Wrangler. Your feedback in our Q&A module winds us up, and we've embedded that in the post below, as well. Thanks for listening, we'll see you next week!
According to the company, certain 2010 Chrysler Town and Country, Dodge Grand Caravan and Dodge Journey vehicles were built with ignitions that could accidently switch from the "run" position to "accessory," thereby causing the engine to shut off.

Both the company and NHTSA are concerned that the issue could cause an accident. As such, Chrysler will replace the ignition modules free of charge beginning in April of this year.

The recall includes vehicles manufactured between August 3, 2009 and June 17, 2010, and owners can contact Chrysler for more information. Click past the jump for the full recall notice.

All-wheel drive is available in the 2011 Dodge Charger, Journey and Durango, and with all of the widespread snow this winter, Chrysler is hoping you'll want every edge you can get.

To get the word out about its all-wheel drive lineup, Dodge is running a new TV commercial that pokes fun at the typically panicked behavior that ensues whenever the weather report calls for snow. After the local grocery stores have been stripped bare of milk and bread, you're going to have to go out of your way to restock anyway, so you might as well have a secure, confident way to do it, right? Dodge thinks its AWD offerings turn epic winter weather into little more than flurries. Does Auburn Hills have another hit on our hands from a seemingly reinvigorated Chrysler advertising effort, or is this one a dud? Check it out after the jump, then let us know in 'Comments.'

As part of Chrysler's giant product onslaught for the 2011 model year, The Pentastar has released new R/T trim levels of both the Dodge Grand Caravan and Journey crossover. Both models make their debut at the Chicago Auto Show this week, and while there aren't any big power boosts, the spruced up exterior and interior designs speak of sportiness.

Both the Grand Caravan and Journey R/T use Chrysler's 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, pumping out 283 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, mated exclusively to a six-speed automatic transmission. The minivan is only available with front-wheel drive, though an all-wheel-drive variant of the Journey R/T is available.

Outside, the Grand Caravan R/T gets new appearance tweaks like a "dipped" body-colored grille, body-colored side moldings and a new set of 17-inch alloy wheels. Likewise, the Journey R/T features the same sort of exterior treatment, but rides on larger 19-inch aluminum wheels with a satin carbon finish. Inside, both vehicles benefit from upgrades like black seats with red contrast stitching throughout, as well as the latest in Chrysler connectivity and infotainment.

The 2011 Grand Caravan R/T and Journey R/T will arrive at dealerships this Spring, priced from $30,595 and $28,995, respectively. Opting for the all-wheel-drive Journey R/T will set you back $30,695, and you can read the full suite of details in the automaker's press release, after the jump.

Chrysler has had plenty of partnerships over the years, and as odd as it may have seemed in the beginning, the tie-in with Fiat arguably makes more sense than any of those past pairings. Chrysler doesn't have much of a presence overseas, and Fiat doesn't in North America. Putting them together, then, could be the perfect formula for global success. The Fiat 500 is coming to North America, and while we've been hearing about Chrysler vehicles being sent to Europe for quite some time now, this is the first actual proof.

The vehicle you see here will be unveiled at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show as the Fiat Freemont. Look familiar? That's because it's essentially the Dodge Journey with a different badge on the nose. Otherwise it's essentially the same vehicle, produced alongside the Journey at the same plant in Toluca, Mexico.

The only major difference to speak of is under the hood, where Fiat's own 2.0-liter MultiJet turbo diesel engines (with 140 or 170 horsepower) will be offered with front-wheel drive and a manual gearbox initially. All-wheel drive, an automatic transmission and Chrysler's 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 will be offered shorly after the initial launch. The full details are available in the press release after the break, and see the Journey-come-Fiat for yourself in the high-res gallery below.

The Dodge Journey has been given a much-needed makeover for 2011, with a new V6 and a significantly improved interior. That's good news for Dodge dealers here in the States, but according to Autoweek it isn't such a great deal for Dodge dealerships overseas.

That's because the Journey will no longer be sold with the Ram badge, as Sergio Marchionne and company have reportedly decided it would fare better as a Fiat-branded crossover. The CUV will reportedly be given the Freemont moniker, and it will be the first Chrysler-based vehicle to be given a Fiat engine - a diesel in this case. The 2.0-liter oilburner is capable of 170 horsepower - 30 more than the VW-sourced diesel currently employed in the Journey overseas.

The move to sell the Journey as a Fiat may also make sense given Fiat's massive 5,000 store retail network. If Fiat dealers can surpass the meager sales of the Journey, it could help Chrysler increase output at the Toluca, Mexico plant where the CUV is built along side the Fiat 500. AW claims the Freemont will be unveiled in Geneva, with sales beginning in June 2011.
