The streaking meteor event in Siberia last week has led Jon Stewart to spare a few minutes on The Daily Show to examine footage of the explosion 20 miles high and said to be equal to 300 kilotons of TNT.

But his real interest is asking why so many Russians were able to get the footage in the first place, i.e., why are there so many dashcams? Coincidentally, Wired asked the same question just a few days ago. Using plenty of examples to illustrate his point - akin to this, and this, and this, that we have become oh so used to - Stewart surmises that Russian roads are "A live-action Grand Theft Auto" and that "Russians in their daily lives see so much amazing [expletive] that they have become unfazeable."

You can watch his amusing take on our comrades across the Pacific in the video below.
Continue reading Jon Stewart investigates the Russian dashcam phenomenon

Jon Stewart investigates the Russian dashcam phenomenon originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 24 Feb 2013 12:01:00 EST.
These days, there are some serious battle lines drawn around which late-night host you prefer. With the embattled Conan O'Brien taking to the airwaves for the first time since being ousted from NBC, we can all but guarantee another outpouring of down-with-Leno sentiment. But who are the rank and file that make up the heart of each suit's fan base? Who is it exactly that watches Letterman, and how do they differ from Stewart's army of fans?

The crew from USA Today set out to discover the answers to those questions by commissioning a poll with Penn Schoen Berland. What did they find? Conan O'Brien fans are likely to be between 18 and 34 years old, drive Volkswagens and be single atheists. Seriously.

Meanwhile, Jay Leno is favored by folks who are 45 years old and up, religious and listen to country music. Their chariot of choice tends to be something of the domestic flavor - especially Pontiac and Chevrolet hardware.

One of Leno's harshest critics, David Letterman, picks up views from people between the ages of 25 and 44 years-old who are likely divorced democrats. Interestingly enough, Letterman's crew rolls on a beige tide of Toyotas.

Finally, the study took a look at Jon Stewart's fan base and found that the comedian garners views from 35-54 year-old married Catholics. Team Stewart tends to favor a GMC truck for getting around town.

Where there's funny to be found, you can count on Jon Stewart to find it. The much-loved host of news parody program The Daily Show has proven a knack for exposing the humorous side of whatever's happening in the news, and lately, well...that's been Toyota and its two recalls. So it was only a matter of time until his Comedy Central crew took a good-natured jab at the world's largest automaker in its most difficult time.

In the video after the jump, you'll find Stewart and his troop noting the overwhelming irony behind Toyota's unstoppable acceleration in the marketplace, the explosive flip-side of its superior gas mileage, company president Akio Toyoda's use of an Audi wagon in Switzerland, and, of course, what this means for Detroit's Big 3 automakers. Set aside five minutes, put a handful of Fritos in your mouth and watch the "Toyotathon of Death." Bonus: David Letterman also took a swing at Toyota on the Late Show. Watch both funnymen ply their craft at Toyota's expense after the jump.
Now, with General Motors' bankruptcy official, Stewart takes aim at the late, great automaker in the segment "BiGMess."

Although Stewart was late to the game with last night's Daily Show and a few of his quips provide further proof that the MSM are still woefully uninformed about what brought down two of the Big Three, between gags, he poses a few questions the average American is asking. Namely, what happened to the $20 billion we (U.S. taxpayers) loaned GM, why are we going to drop another $30 billion into the bankrupt automaker and why, if we're in the business of taking over corporations, can't we start buying companies that - you know - make money?

You can watch the segment in the clip below the fold, along with Stewart's interview with P.J. O'Rourke, hawking his oh-so-timely book Driving Like Crazy.
Continue reading VIDEO: Jon Stewart asks why we keep buying crap companies

VIDEO: Jon Stewart asks why we keep buying crap companies originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 03 Jun 2009 15:59:00 EST.
A few of us here at Autoblog are avid watchers of the Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and during last night's episode he ran a segment begging the question: why is is Congress being so tough on the Big Three when money was so freely given to the financial industry? It's a good question, and Stewart uses his own experience with a "virginity preserving" AMC Gremlin to illustrate that at least the auto industry makes something useful even if it loses money doing so. OK, so you had to be there, which is why we embedded video of the segment for you after the jump as well as a transcript in case you're not allowed to watch funny internet videos in your cubicle at work.
