You may remember the JCB Dieselmax, as it was the streamliner that set a new Land Speed Record (LSR) for diesel cars last August by going more than 350 mph. We covered it quite extensively, as it was a pretty amazing feat. And we're not the only ones who took notice. The Dieselmax just won a fairly prestigious award.

This award is known as the Dewar Trophy, and it was presented by the Royal Automobile Club. They are pretty selective about handing out the trophy, as well. In the last hundred years, the trophy has only been awarded 39 times. Ricardo was the last to receive it for its work on the dual clutch transmission used in the Bugatti Veyron, among other vehicles. Coincidentally, Ricardo was also involved in the JCB Dieselmax project. It was one of the companies that helped construction giant JCB achieve a whopping 750bhp out of each of the Dieselmax engines. That level of thrust was good enough to push the LSR car to a two-way average of 350.092mph. And as test driver Andy Green explained, he never even had a chance to grab top gear!

[Source: Car Keys]
JCB Dieselmax honored with Dewar Trophy originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 19 Mar 2007 10:35:00 EST. The owner of JCB, a construction and agricultural equipment company, who recently captured the title of world's fastest diesel with his 350.092mph DieselMax, announced today that despite voicing his interest last August in purchasing Jaguar from Ford, wasn't interested in a package deal that included Land Rover. Technically speaking, Aston Martin is currently the only brand up for sale in Ford's Premier Auto Group, but it seems like the word is out on the street that if anyone's interested in both Jaguar and Land Rover, that Ford would consider an offer.

[Source: The Detroit News]
JCB owner ends pursuit of Jaguar originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 16 Oct 2006 11:34:00 EST. While you certainly aren't alone, we still think that an oilburner that can achieve 350 MPH is still news. Plus, there are a few of us that are pining away for a high performance diesel to enter the U.S. market, setting to rest previously held beliefs about diesels, and this is one large step in that direction.

With that out of the way, it seems the British earthmover manufacturer is on its way to break its own record, again. Yesterday, the DieselMax hit 350 MPH and although it hasn't been confirmed yet by the FIA, there is little doubt that they'll continue moving upward from there.

The truly jaw-dropping part came from Andy Green, pilot of the DieselMax, when he said, "There is so much more to come as the car is pulling like a train and we still haven't used sixth gear!"

There's no way of telling, but we've got a good idea what's pumping through his headphones.

[Source: Auto Express]
JCB does it, again: Now at 350 MPH originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 25 Aug 2006 09:57:00 EST. The owner of JCB, purveyor of all things earth moving, candidly admitted his desire to purchase Jaguar from its current owner, Ford.

Why the bold proposition? According to the article, Sir Bamford would gladly take the ailing luxury mark off of Ford's hands as long as Land Rover doesn't come with it. He contends that Land Rover is still a commodity, with the potential to make serious profit, whereas Jaguar is arguably a company in dire straits. Although that doesn't make a strong case for Bamford's plan, one gets the impression that the multi-millionaire wants to bring Jaguar back to its former glory by eliminating the bureaucratic hurdles that many contend are the cause of its current ills.

That attitude, we're sure, is the product of a family owned and operated company and with that attention to detail, in addition to Bamford's own knowledge of vehicle production, this could very well be the most compelling offer yet for Jaguar.

[Source: Inside Line]
JCB Owner considers purchase of Jaguar originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 24 Aug 2006 06:53:00 EST. The JCB Dieselmax team spent the last two days replacing the car's 600-bhp practice engines with 750-bhp "record" versions. Driver Andy Green piloted the car for both runs reaching 324 mph on the first run and 333 mph on the second. The new record, which is still subject to official confirmation, breaks the previous record of 236 mph set in 1973 by nearly, but not quite, 100 mph. Green believes there's still more left in the Dieselmax and the team will be tinkering with the car before making additional runs later in the week.

[Source: JCBDieselmax and 4Car]
JCB Dieselmax does it! originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 22 Aug 2006 17:57:00 EST.
JCB's Dieselmax land speed record vehicle has recently passed the 200 MPH mark in testing, which is a major step towards beating the current diesel record of 235 MPH.

While each of the vehicle's two 5.0L turbodiesel powerplants were recently certified at 750 HP during dyno testing (neatly matching the engineering estimates), they were dialed back to a mere 600 HP for the purpose of these trial runs. When the vehicle finally unleashes all 1500 HP - expected to happen later this month at the Bonneville salt flats - it's estimated that it will exceed the 300 MPH mark. When producing maximum power, the two production-based engines consume a stunning 3.3 tons of air per hour.

The plan is to make the record runs using low-sulfur pump fuel, and the vehicle will also employ particle traps to keep the exhaust smoke-free. LSR veteran Andy Green will be manning the Dieselmax; his job qualifications include the current world land speed record run of over 763 MPH in 1997.

Its other project is this Hummer-dwarfing off-roader called the HMUV, for High Mobility Utility Vehicle. JCB has recruited a team of professionals to design and sell the 6.7-liter HMUV, including former Land Rover managing director Mathew Taylor who will head up sales and marketing for the HMUV. While not originally intended as a roadgoing vehicle, the HMUV could reportedly be sold to private owners using a commercial version of the 4.4-liter diesel engine being tested in the Dieselmax H1. For military use, however, the HMUV can be ordered either as a pickup or fully-enclosed people carrier.

[Source: AutoExpress]
HMUV military-grade 4x4 being developed by JCB originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 27 Jul 2006 13:58:00 EST. Really. The JCB Dieselmax H1 is motivated by a pair of JCB444 dieselsnormally used with the company's backhoe models.

The firm announced Thursday that the streamliner is scheduled for an Augustattempt to break the 33-year-old diesel speed record of 235.756 mph, set by Virgil Snyder in the Thermo KingStreamliner. The Dieselmax will be driven by Britain's own Andy Green, holder of the unlimited land speed record.

The two LSR four-cylinder diesels use a standard production engine block, cylinder head and bedplate, upgradedwith direct injection, two-stage turbocharging and a host of other mods to boost power output to 750 hp. Redlined at3800 rpm, each engine produces nearly 1,100 ft-lb of torque. The engines will run with about 75 psi (!) of boost atfull power. At 150 hp/liter, JCB claims the Dieselmax engines are the world's highest specific power diesel carengines.

[Source: JCB]
Diesel land speed record car based on construction machinery originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 21 Apr 2006 07:56:00 EST.
