Ferrari P 4/5 at LeMons

One of the truly great things about a LeMons race is that the event is a celebration of all cars. We appreciate the fact that Lamborghini and Ferrari models get all sorts of fanfare throughout the year, but where else will you see a lowly Ford Fairmont cheered around a road track? Nowhere else, we tell you. The races are also an excuse for the lowliest of hardware to rub shoulders with high end metal. Take a recent event at Monticello Motor Club, for example. James Glickenhaus stopped in with his Ferrari P4/5, and organizers figured the creation was quick enough to serve as the race's pace car.

That's right. Glickenhaus actually put his unique P4/5 on the same track as a bunch of heaps held together with bailing twine and beer-fueled optimism. We would wager his machine is worth approximately five times as much as every competitor's vehicle on the course combined. Yes, that's awesome. James Glickenhaus and his Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus team will have a new model ready for the 2015 Geneva Motor Show. Codenamed the P33, not many details are known about the car, but the post in FerrariChat.com says that it will be much smaller than the Glickenhaus P 4/5 (shown above) with a size closer to the Dino Competizone.

The limited available information about the car indicates that the P33 will be crafted from carbon fiber, giving it a 1,600-pound curb weight, with a body that will have a "three-wing design." Planned as a one-off model, the P33 will be powered by a twin-turbo V6 putting out close to 500 horsepower.

Originally developed with the sole purpose of being a Ferrari rival to compete at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Ford GT40 became a prominent racing machine in the 1960s in both Europe and the US. Not wanting to leave such an important car out of the fun, the 2013 Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance also took time out from its other celebrations to recognize the 50-year anniversary of the GT40.

Over its short lifespan, the GT40 was offered in a handful of configurations, but the classic short-tailed (Mk I and Mk II) bodystyles were well represented... especially in Gulf livery. James Glickenhaus (of Ferrari P4/5 fame) had his bright yellow Mk IV in the field, and there were several others in this bodystyle, including one that has seen plenty of time on the track judging by its chipped-up nose.

As a fitting statement for the car's lengthy racing history, GT40 Chassis Number 1075 won this year's Concours de Sport award. This car took home the checkered flag at Le Mans in 1968 and 1969, and racked up a total of six wins in just 11 races.

Glickenhaus P4/5 Competizione on Bloomberg

Bloomberg recently sat down with James Glickenhaus as part of its Bloomberg Pursuits series. The 15-minute segment traces Glickenhaus' progression from movie director to money manager and finally to Ferrari collector and creator of the P4/5 Competizione. With plenty of interview footage with Glickenhaus himself, as well as a good long look at the man's $20 million car collection and a segment on his team's efforts at the 24 Hours of Nürburgring, the spot is a comprehensive look at not only Glickehaus but the P4/5 as well.

Glickenhaus takes some time to speak about his interactions with Ferrari, especially over using the company's name, and the sorts of ludicrous offers he's had for the road-worthy P4/5. As it turns out, one member of the Saudi royal family offered Glickenhaus a whopping $40 million for the car. He said no. You can check out the video below for a closer look at the segment.

According to new reports, James Glickenhaus has more big plans for his P4/5 Competizione, eying an entry in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2014 with an LMP contender. That year there will be a slate of new regulations that refocus cars around around the amount of energy they use per lap (instead of displacement and air restrictions) and that open up the possibilities for design and privateer competitors.

Providing sketches of a highly stylized version of what an LMP version of the P4/5C M (M is for Modificata, indicating the kinetic energy recovery system fitted this year) could look like, Glickenhaus would only say that "we do not exclude the possibility of building a P4/5 LMP" car for 2014. The project would need partners and backing, so Glickenhaus has cautioned that nothing is assured. In the meantime, while his team contemplates that challenge, he wants the P4/5C M to finish first in its class in the year's FIA ​​World Championship Alternate Energy Cup series, and he wants to head back to the Nürburgring to beat the 6:51 lap time set earlier this summer, which is still a record for a car under Ferrari power.

P4/5 Competizione

According to the timing sheets for the Nürburgring 24-Hour race, the now-hybridized P4/5 Competizione set a lap time of 6:51 during qualifying. That would make it faster than the "Production-Derived Sports Car" record of 6:58.16 set by the Ferrari 599XX in 2010, and the fastest Ferrari-powered vehicle to ever run the 'Ring.

In case you don't remember, the 700-horsepower 599XX was also a purpose-built, track-only racer driven by a test driver. On the other hand, we don't have specs on the P4/5 Competizione to compare, but that doesn't make the achievement itself any less impressive. The only car ahead of the P4/5 Competizione in the not-street-legal category is the Pagani Zonda R, which rocked a 6:47.50. Glickenhaus himself told Jalopnik he thought the feat was "pretty cool" and that Ferrari was welcome to challenge it.

P4/5 Competizione

Race cars are going hybrid these days. Formula One racers store regenerated brake energy. Porsche packs a flywheel into the 911 GT3 R. Just the other day, Toyota unveiled its new TS030 Hybrid endurance prototype. And now even Jim Glickenhaus' one-off Ferrari-powered, Pininfarina-designed P4/5 Competizione is said to be getting a hybrid powertrain.

Emerging reports from Europe indicate that the GT prototype is preparing to return to the Nürburgring-based VLN series, but this time, it'll be packing some electric boost. That bit is tipped to come from a system provided by Magneti Marelli that's similar to the Kinetic Energy Recovery System it developed for Scuderia Ferrari for use in F1. The 4.0-liter V8 will continue providing principal motivation, but the added jolt of power could be just what the team needs to conquer the Green Hell with green(er) propulsion.

The 2011 24 Hours of Nürburgring is long over, which means we're due for an update on how James Glickenhaus and his beautiful Ferrari P4/5 Comeptizione fared. Here's the short answer: they finished pretty well. Overall, the car ended up in 40th, but managed a third-place in the E1-XP2 class. Not too shabby.

The videos after the jump were shot by Kinetic Fin, and take you through the entire race weekend in two chapters. There's some great footage in both, so we'd highly suggest taking the next 20 minutes or so to enlighten yourself.

Born from the mad mind of James Glickenhaus, the P 4/5 Competizione is the racing version of Glickenhaus' road-going P 4/5. A rendered image has been transformed into a carbon fiber-bodied track racer, which is set to tackle race tracks across the globe. Captured in a variety of videos, the P 4/5 has been missing that last little bit to turn it into a full-fledged race car - sponsorship stickers. That is, until now.

The P 4/5 Competizione has been officially tarted up with a variety of sponsor signage. While we hate to see that glorious carbon fiber body hiding behind vinyl, we still think the car looks pretty amazing. Check it out from all angles by clicking through the gallery below.

James Glickenhaus's P4/5 Competizione made its debut at the Nürburgring this weekend ahead of the actual running of the Nürburgring 24 Hours. The test sessions reportedly went well and got as much hype and attention (yep, we're guilty as charged...) as anything Glickenhaus's now-famous racer does.

The P4/5 Competizione looked right at home on the track, though tests were cut short after a red flag limited driver Luca Cappellari to one lap. Mika Salo got plenty of seat time though, and the car looks just about ready for competition.

There aren't any concrete lap times yet, but best guesses are in the 8:30 range, which would put the P4/5 Competizione right where it needs to be. Click past the jump for videos from the test weekend, and be sure to check out the latest set of images of the exquisitely beautiful showpiece below.

We've seen the P4/5 Competizione take to the track on clear days as well as days mired in fog. Now the team is out on the Paul Ricard Circuit in Le Castellet, France. Rather than watch from the outside as the James Glickenhaus-owned racecar tears up the course, we are treated to an in-cabin view that looks out the front windshield.

Way back in October, we showed you the first installment of Inside P4/5 Competizione, a documentary about James Glickenhaus' now-iconic racecar. The second installment of this ongoing story is now on YouTube, following the saga of the car's build and the hype that has surrounded it from the beginning. Throughout the documentary, Glickenhaus insists that media attention was never the goal or expectation, but that he just wanted to go racing.

The video covers everything from the the obsessive web coverage of the car to Ferrari's attempts to make the project stop. The footage is splattered with images of the P4/5 Competizione both on the track and in various stages of undress, which is always a good thing. Couple that with a fantastic soundtrack and Glickenhaus's indomitable attitude, and you have the recipe for a winner. See for yourself in the video after the break.

Ferrari P4/5 Competizione - Click above to watch video after the jump

We've seen video of James Glickenhaus' "daily driver" Ferrari P4/5 by Pininfarina on the track and the street, and we already know that his race-prepared P4/5 Competizione is progressing nicely. While photos show the Ferrari P4/5 Competizione to be just as sexy as the Enzo-based road car that inspired it, nothing shows off a racing car's chops like actual footage of it in action.

That's now available via just-released in-car video of the Ferrari P4/5 Competizione lapping Italy's Vallelunga circuit. It's the latest exidence that Jim Glickenhaus' new machine is indeed the business. Sounds as good as it looks, too. Follow the jump to watch. Thanks to Don for the tip!

Ferrari P4/5 hits the track - Click above to watch video after the jump

It's no secret that we wish James Glickenhaus would adopt us (Hell, your author would barely have to change his last name) and we've always been quite smitten with his one-off Ferrari P4/5. The Pininfarina-bodied car has been seen everywhere from New York City to a Gooding's auction at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, Palm Beach, Florida and even the Paris Motor Show. Now we have footage of it doing more than just looking good as Glickenhaus took the car across The Pond for some high-speed testing.

After calling it a day at the track, the P4/5 doesn't get put on a trailer, it's used to shuffle off into the city to enjoy the local night life. We're pretty sure that Mr. Glickenhaus gets the velvet-rope treatment when he heads out, but it's nice to see that the P4/5 does too.

James Glickenhaus' P4/5C takes shape - Click above for image gallery

The Ferrari P4/5C that will race in next year's Nürburgring 24 is taking shape. All we have at this point are a bunch of shots of carbon fiber bodywork being wrapped around the roll cage and structure, but shouldn't that be enough? At this rate it looks like the car, using an F430 chassis, will be ready early next year for testing, which should give the four drivers named to the team -Mika Salo, Nicola Larini, Fabrizio Giovanardi, and Luca Cappellari - plenty of time to find any cracks in its blood red armor. The next video segment of the racer's gestation should be coming online soon, but in the meantime check out the shots below to see the P4/5C's progress.

The story of the P4/5 Competizione - Click above to watch video after the jump

The story of James Glickenhaus' P4/5 Competizione continues with Chapter 1 of the story put together by Kinetic Fin. The car has long been in gestation, and although we have no idea how many chapters will be involved in this tale, it looks like we'll be seeing the completed racer soon.

So while you won't get a glimpse of the finished product in the video, Glickenhaus will explain his motivation and he'll do it among some of the other eye-pleasing cars in his collection. Follow the jump for the prologue, and let the road to the 2011 Nürburgring 24 begin.

There are no shortage of reasons why we love the Ferrari P4/5, and by extension, owner Jim Glickenhaus for bringing it to fruition. The Pininfarina-penned one-off drew its inspiration and design cues from the legendary P3/4, one of the most achingly beautiful - and devastatingly fast - Ferraris ever devised. Just one problem: the original P3/4 was a homologated race car, harking back to the days when you could drive your machinery to the track, race for the day and then blast back home. Those days are far behind us, but that's no problem for our old friend Jim. He'll just make another one.

And so was born the P4/5 Competition project, creating a racing version to compliment the street-legal coachbuilt special. Unlike the Enzo-based road car, Glickenhaus chose to base the Competizione model on an amalgamation of F430 underpinnings, using the 430 Scuderia's chassis (to ensure that it would be able to be converted back to street use once its racing days were over) and the F430 GT2's drivetrain to keep it up to speed with the competition.

The project is now well under way, and Jim has released the rendering you see above to give us a heads-up on what the final product will look like. Of course the design is largely the same as the P4/5 roadcar, but upgrades with some race-specific components, from the front splitter to the rear wing and a livery inspired by racing Ferraris of yore. Reports indicate that it will be classified as an experimental racer in the same vein as the Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid. For our part, we can't wait to see it turn its wheels in anger at some of the world's most legendary circuits.

We all remember the hoopla a few years ago when kajillionaire James Glickenhaus revealed he had been working with Ferrari on an updated version of the famous P3/4 race car from the sixties. What resulted was the Ferrari P4/5 one-off. Glickenhaus was $4 million lighter, but that seems like money well spent judging by all the attention he received, not to mention the fact he owns a 1-of-1 Ferrari.

That whole endeavor was part of the Ferrari Special Projects program (turns out that the P4/5 preceded the Ferrari Special Projects program, the first vehicle of which was the SP1), which is fancy Italian talk for "We will build anything you want for the right price." Another kajillionaire was apparently waiting in line behind Glickenhaus, and after 14 months of development, his car is ready too. Called the P540 Superfast Aperta, this entirely unique Ferrari was commissioned and partly developed by Edward Walson, whose claim to fame is that his dad invented cable TV. The new money mogul had reportedly always dreamed of designing cars, and approached Ferrari in 2008 to develop a car based on the gold Ferrari in the 1968 short film Toby Dammit.

If you can't tell, the donor car is a Ferrari 599 and much of the development work went into strengthening the car after the roof was removed. It's pretty, it's road legal and it's the only in existence. Follow the jump for the official word from Ferrari.

James Glickenhaus' Pininfarina-designed Ferrari P4/P5 - Click above for a high-res image gallery

Due principally to debt, the family owners of Pininfarina S.p.A. have contracted with Italy's Banca Leonardo to help them sell 50.7 percent of their stake in the design/contract manufacturing business. Said a source, "It is a commitment [the Pininfarina family] made with the banks. The family has no intention of leaving completely." Sure, but who will buy controlling interest of such a storied company? Have you met our Indian friend Tata?

That's right, rumors are swirling that Indian giant Tata, new owner of both Jaguar and Land Rover, is reportedly in the hunt to purchase the Pininfarina family's shares. However, the reports are painting the pending deal as a partnership rather than a takeover and Tata already has dealings with Fiat, so they're familiar with the Italian way of doing things. For its part, Pininfarina is working on an electric car (hey, why not?) with French entrepreneur Vincent Bollore. They also have contracts with both Ford and Volvo to build cabriolets of the Focus Coupe-Cabriolet and the C70, respectively. We'll see how this all plays out, especially now that Fiat owns Bertone.

The name James Glickenhaus should be familiar to Autoblog readers. He is, of course, the gentlemen who commissioned the marvelous Enzo-derived Ferrari P4/5 several years ago. He's also the kind of wealthy car collector who most, if not all members, of Autoblog would choose to be in that alternate universe where we are all wealthy car collectors. That is to say, Glickenhaus doesn't just squirrel away his incredibly rare cars in a climate-controlled warehouse; he takes 'em out an drives 'em as God (and the Italians) intended.

One of Glickenhaus's more recent acquisitions is the 1967 Ferrari Dino 206 Competizione by Pininfarina. The diminutive gull-wing concept was built by Ferrari and its styling partner Pininfarina in 1967 as a design study and an experiment in aerodynamics. It was never intended for production, but lessons learned from it were eventually applied to other cars. The Dino 206 Competizione lived in the Pininfarina museum for more than three decades until 2007 when, after several years of pestering, the design house finally agreed to sell it to Glickenhaus. It won best in class here at Meadow Brook against some strong competition, including Glickenhaus's own 1967 Ferrari 330 P3/4 Spyder and a wonderful Austin Healey 3000. And yes, Glickenhaus told us he drives this one-of-a-kind machine regularly.
