Amelia Island is the place to be this coming March for collectors and lovers of classic British sportscars. Last year Gooding & Company auctioned off over $16 million in classic automobiles at the annual event, including a $2.75 million 1931 Voisin and a $1.7 million '61 Porsche RS61 Spyder formerly owned by Sir Stirling Moss.

This year's consignments have already begun coming in, starting off with a rare 1949 Jaguar XK120. The alloy-bodied roadster - the only one made in Blue Sheen paint - was the first XK120 to come to the United States, and is expected to fetch as much as half a million at auction. Next up is one of only four '33 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Continental Sedanca Drop Head Coupes (got all that?) with Gurney Nutting coachwork, likewise estimated around the half-million mark. Finally Gooding has a '62 Lotus 23B on the docket with considerable racing pedigree projected at around $200k.

The auction will take place on Friday, March 11, 2011 at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation. Details in the press release after the jump, with high-res images in the gallery below.

Barry Goldwater's one-off George Barris 1953 Jaguar XK120 - Click above for high-res image gallery

Long before Barry Goldwater would suffer a crushing defeat at the hands of Lyndon B. Johnson in the 1964 presidential election, the politician apparently had a taste for wildly customized cars. Unsatisfied with the exquisite design of his 1953 Jaguar XK120, Goldwater commissioned the legendary George Barris to turn the car into something special. Barris took the time to work in headlight and tailfin assemblies from a '53 Buick, along with a Lincoln Continental-style spare tire carrier and a shortened Cadillac rear bumper. Inside, the dash was reworked in unfinished aluminum, complete with an array of aeronautical gauges. We're quite sure we prefer the bog-standard XK120's sheetmetal, but this car's interesting history and one-off nature is hard to ignore.

The car has spent the last 20 years of its life tucked away in a California shop and has emerged via the glory of eBay Motors. The body has weathered the years between 1953 and now without too much wear and tear, though the interior has moved on to the great beyond. The car's 3.5-liter, DOHC I6 is still in place, as are all of those oddball gauges. The car is available in Newport Beach, California with its reserve not met at $15,639 at the time of writing. If you want it, hop on over to eBay and get to clicking. There are only four days left on the auction right now.

With Jaguar celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, honoring the automaker's motorsports heritage surely has to play a big part in the party. With that in mind there are 27 Jags of various vintages entered in this year's Mille Miglia revival. The factory and Jaguar Heritage Trust are bringing a team of six XK120s, C-Types and D-Types for the 1,000 round trip tour from Brescia to Rome and back.

The current Mille Miglia is open to cars that competed in the original race between 1927 and 1957 as well as other examples of the same model and vintage. In addition to the Jaguars, this year's field includes the usual suspects like Alfa Romeo, Maserati and Ferrari as well as makes you've likely never heard of. Those more obscure brands include OM, Morettini (based on a Fiat) and Siata. The 2010 Mille Miglia began yesterday and runs through May 8th.

First let us deal with the baffling part. Having grown up just miles from Agoura, California we can attest that, with the exception of Mike Cimo's Bar Mitzvah, nothing of any interest has ever happened there. Not during our lifetime at any rate. However, it turns out that back in the mid-1950s, Agoura was quite the place to be - assuming you're of the gearhead persuasion, of course.

Now for the wonderful part. In the following video, you will see an Austin-Healey 100, a Jaguar XK120 and a Ford Thunderbird all jamming their hardest to run up a dirt hill as fast as possible. More incredibly, there were 160 entrants and 2,000 spectators, so says the West Coast Sports Car Journal. Amazing figures for something as non-sanctioned as a hill climb.

Sadly, not included int the video is the winning Eliminator Model T that's now supposedly owned by none other than Brock Yates. Nor do we get to see the second place place car, a Cad-Allard J2X. This hill climb took place on February 6, 1955 and not only can't we imagine anyone running cars this pretty in the dirt, but anything 1/10th as joyous taking place in Agoura ever again. Make the jump to watch the video.
