As it begins the rollout of the all-wheel-drive Jaguar XJ and XF models, Jaguar Land Rover has just announced that it has opened a new facility in northern Minnesota for winter testing. Located in International Falls, MN (on the US and Canadian border), the British automaker says it is one of the coldest locations in the Continental US. Jaguar's new Instinctive All Wheel Drive system was developed primarily to help sell more cars in the northern US, so it only makes sense to open a testing area in the US as well.

With temperatures that can drop to minus 55 degrees Fahrenheit, International Falls was chosen to mimic some of the worst weather a Jaguar or Land Rover will ever see. The grounds house testing chambers, various road surfaces and even a frozen lake. This new facility complements the hot-weather testing grounds in Phoenix, AZ.

The official press release is posted below.
Continue reading Jaguar Land Rover opens winter testing facility in Minnesota

Jaguar Land Rover opens winter testing facility in Minnesota originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 12 Dec 2012 17:43:00 EST.
The Middle East is one of the fastest-growing markets for Land Rover, so it makes sense that the automaker is looking to set up shop in the region. According to Automotive News, Jaguar Land Rover is in talks with the people of Saudi Arabia to build a factory in the country at an expected initial cost of $1.2 billion. Still in the early stage of talks, the proposed facility could start up by 2017 using locally sourced materials such as steel and aluminum.

Such an arrangement could be beneficial for both entities as Saudi Arabia looks to diversify its oil-reliant economy and Land Rover could get local production capacity of around 50,000 units. The report also says that the agreement talks about the possibility for Jaguar models to be built at the same plant further down the road.

This won't be the first vehicle produced in Saudi Arabia - that honor goes to the KSU Gazal-1 - but it will be the first from a major global automaker.
Jaguar Land Rover may build factory in Saudi Arabia originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 11 Dec 2012 15:45:00 EST.
Jaguar and Land Rover are set to merge their sales facilities, according to Inside Line. Jaguar Land Rover North America President Andy Gross says 45 percent of Jaguar owners also have an SUV in their stable, so it makes sense to give customers as much exposure to the cat's high-riding cousins and possible. The number of overall outlets will remain the same, and the brands will reportedly remain separate on the showroom floor, however.

So far, just one dealer has made the move to combine under the roof of one 68,000 square-foot facility in Paramus, New Jersey (above), though a further 20 are ready to make the shift and become Jaguar Land Rover outlets. Gross believes the shift is necessary so that his company's dealer network will accurately reflect the company's products. We'll see how cozy the brands are when Jaguar starts rolling out its own SUVs in a few years.
Jaguar and Land Rover to consolidate dealerships originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 29 Nov 2012 11:00:00 EST.
To better get a feel for the tastes of its customers, Jaguar Land Rover has decided to open design studios in the US and China, Jag design chief Ian Callum tells Automotive News Europe. US and Chinese sales rank second and third behind the UK for the Jaguar Land Rover group.

"We are going to go out there to get a feeling for what the market is and what people like," Callum says.

Despite the desire to become engrossed in local flavor, Callum reassures that design at the two brands will remain British.

"We will never design a car around another culture," he says, "but we will certainly build into that vehicle certain national tastes for that market."

Our own Zach Bowman recently referred to the F-Type as "sultry" and a few other things we couldn't print for a mixed-age audience. If Callum and JLR can improve on something that gorgeously covetable, consider us onboard.
Jaguar Land Rover to build design studios in US, China originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 26 Oct 2012 11:01:00 EST.
Here's an unexpected headline: "Jaguar Land Rover to Hire More Than 1,100 Workers at UK Plant."

With the British auto industry all but left for dead when we were still in short pants and both Jaguar and Land Rover mired in irrelevance for most of the past two decades, the notion that these guys might someday make a successful go of it has always seemed akin to world peace - a nice idea but unlikely to ever happen. So kudos to the management at Tata for doing what neither the former Ford overlords nor the British themselves could.

The Dow Jones Newswires report says JLR will be hiring the new workers to build the XF Sportbrake (pictured) later this year at its Castle Bromwich assembly plant. The company has already added some 1,000 manufacturing jobs at another English plant to support a 19-percent sales increase through the first half of the year. JLR told Dow Jones that a third of its total workforce, some 8,000 people, have been hired in the past two years.

If that doesn't say business is booming, what does?
Jaguar Land Rover hiring 1,100 new workers to build XF Sportbrake originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 25 Jul 2012 18:45:00 EST. A couple of developments on the recent Jaguar/Land Rover joint venture are being reported in Chinese media based on a report in China's Economic Daily News. The 130,000-capacity factory planned for Jiangsu is epected to mint its first vehicle in 2014, with numbers given for the breakdown so far as: 43,000 Land Rover Freelander 2s, 34,000 Range Rover Evoque models (called the Aurora in China) and, according to Google Translate, "the joint venture brand vehicles of 23,000 Jaguar sedan."

We're not sure if that really means 23,000 Jags will be made, since that would be a six-fold multiplier of Jaguar's 2011 sales in China. The quoted Land Rover production would only be doubling its sales tally from 2011, even though the brand's sales were up 105 percent in Q1 of this year. There will be a separate joint-venture brand created between JLR and Chery as well, so that could be a part of it. Futher on, the plan is for the plant to expand to a capacity of 250,000 units.

More interestingly, the locally-made engines will be JLR's 3.0-liter V6 alongside two Chery motors, a 1.6-liter TGDI turbo and a 2.0-liter TGDI, with plans to "gradually introduce" the Chery engines into the Land Rovers. JLR engineers are said to be moving to China to continue joint development of the TGDI motors, which has apparently been ongoing. Until those are ready, JLR will import its 240-horsepower, 2.0-liter motor.

The report in China's 163.com is also interesting for the regulatory and business context it provides on the joint venture, with government rules mandating the minimum amount of investment and the establishment of R&D centers. The tie-up is said to be a boon to Chery's fortunes in light of the assertion that Chery's "operating conditions are not ideal" and that getting the "core technology" for its own brands had "become the top priority of the project approval." Official approval of the JV is expected later this year.
Chinese-market Land Rover Freelander and Range Rover Evoque to use Chery engines? originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 22 May 2012 08:28:00 EST.
A month ago, Jaguar Land Rover signed a joint-venture agreement with China's Chery Automobile Company. JLR's 12.1 billion yuan ($1.9 billion U.S.) investment, if approved, will pay for a plant in Changsu to build Jaguars, Land Rovers, engines and joint-venture models. The facility will also house a research and development center. Chery has submitted the paperwork to clear the deal with the Chinese government. The agreement must pass muster with the Ministry of Enviroment Protection, after which it will go to the National Development and Reform Commission.

When the agreement was first inked an Indian analyst said, "it will be some time before we see the results," a nod to the fact that government approvals can take a long time. Subaru is an instructive example, having signed an agreement with Chery a year ago. Sources said the deal was ready to be approved last November, but that was the last that has been heard of it - it's still waiting on the necessary signatures.

But JLR has the long view in mind: it sold 38,890 vehicles in China last year - all imported - a figure representing double-digit sales gains for both brands. The proposed factory will have a capacity of 130,000 units, providing a healthy buffer in case the bureaucracy sits on things.
Chery requests Chinese approval of $1.9B joint venture with Jaguar Land Rover originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 16 May 2012 11:00:00 EST.
When Ford sold Jaguar and Land Rover to Tata Motors for $2.5 billion, the auto industry was in rough shape. And it didn't help that the luxury combo pack didn't exactly have a lineup full of fresh rides.

Only four years have past since that historic sale, but the industry is in much better shape and new vehicles like the Land Rover Evoque and Jaguar XJ have seemingly done wonders for the luxury brands. In fact, Tata's investment may be in much better shape than most anyone would have thought. According to Bloomberg, analysts predict that an Initial Public Offering could show that the brands are worth a combined $14 billion.

That's a monumental return on investment, and there are plenty of reasons for the lofty estimate. Tata reportedly earned $2 billion off JLR in 2011, and sales are at all-time highs. The brands are also expecting major growth in China and Russia, and Tata has promised to double its investment in new products. Tata has also pledged 40 new or refreshed models in the next five years, which is likely more new metal than some full-line manufacturers would be willing to promise.

But while JLR is apparently worth an estimated $14 billion, it appears that Tata isn't quite ready to issue an IPO. Company spokesman Debasis Ray told Bloomberg in an email that Tata is planning to fund the brands through internal cash accruals.
Is Jaguar Land Rover poised for an IPO? originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 19 Apr 2012 09:29:00 EST.
Land Rover and Jaguar aren't exactly setting the sales charts ablaze these days, but the North American President of the British makes is bullish about the future. Automotive News reports that Andy Goss, Jaguar Land Rover North America's new boss claims that Land Rover could hit 50,000 sales by 2012, while Jaguar could crest the 50k mark in annual U.S. sales within the next few years.

The key to growth at Land Rover and Jaguar in a mature market will obviously be new product, and Tata Motors' luxury utility brand is a lot closer to making its mark. Land Rover sold 31,864 units in 2010, and the make is already past 20,000 vehicles sold through July of 2011. Add the compact and stylish Evoque in 2012, and Goss feels the 50,000 mark is well within the brand's reach.

Hitting U.S. sales of 50,000 units could be quite a bit trickier for Jaguar, as the Leaping Cat only moved 13,340 units in 2011. Goss again feels fresh product will help move more metal, with a sports car and BMW 3 Series-fighting sedan are at the top of the list. Another, smaller engine to compliment the excellent but somewhat thirsty 5.0-liter V8 could be on order, though such a powerplant could could take a few years to arrive Stateside.

What may not arrive is the small crossover we're sure many Jaguar dealers are hoping for, but Goss and company have plans for their retail stores anyway. Goss tells AN that dealers will likely be asked to revamp their facilities, though corporate has yet to bring up any changes to the Jaguar dealer council.
Land Rover, Jaguar each gunning for 50,000 sales per year in America originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 17 Aug 2011 11:01:00 EST. Hire a German. Or at least someone who used to work for a German automaker. Rolls-Royce is run by Torsten Müller-Ötvös, a longtime BMW executive. Bentley is headed by Wolfgang Dürheimer, a former Porsche exec. Aston Martin is headed by Ulrich Bez, who worked many years for both BMW and Porsche. Noticing a pattern here?

Now, Jaguar Land Rover has announced a new chief executive for its North American operations, and surprise surprise, he comes from Porsche. With current president Gary Temple retiring, Andy Goss (the smiling chap at right) will be taking up the reins as President at Jaguar Land Rover North America.

Goss comes to the job from his current position as CEO of Porsche Cars GB, where he directed the German automaker's operations in Great Britain. Before that he worked at Austin Rover, Citroën, Nissan, Lexus and Toyota. So he's got plenty of experience, even if the bulk of it was in the UK and not in the region he'll now be supervising for the Leaping Cat and the Green Oval. Official announcement after the jump.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the company has fired up talks with an automaker in The People's Republic in hopes of giving birth to a joint venture. For now, neither Jaguar Land Rover nor owner Tata are willing to expound on who the mystery partner could be. Instead, the two are content to simply say that the move is part of a strategy to push Jaguar and Land Rover products in under-developed markets.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Land Rover may be interested in manufacturing SUVs in China at first. Later, Jaguar products may eventually show up, as well. For now, it's unclear exactly what Jaguar Land Rover would bring to the partnership other than stacks of hard cash and brand equity, though that may be incentive enough for a mystery Chinese automaker.

Jaguar F-Type concept - Click above for high-res image gallery

Now that Jaguar is safely secured under the financial blanket of Tata Motors, the automaker is becoming more ambitious in its efforts to expand its model range. Tata has promised a yearly investment of £1 billion for the next five years, which means Jaguar will have the funding it needs to get new products cranked out. In talking with Auto Express, Jaguar Land Rover boss Carl-Peter Forster has reportedly confirmed that a few new models are in the pipeline, including the F-Type sports car, which we saw in concept form back in 2000 (pictured above).

This certainly isn't the first time that we've heard rumblings about F-Type production, and we've seen plenty of speculation about what the new sports car will look like. Rumors have suggested that the new sporty Jag will compete with the likes of the Porsche 911 or Audi R8.

When will a finished F-Type be on the road? Your guess is as good as ours, but due to Jaguar having just refreshed its entire model range within the last few years, we'd assume that the ball is indeed rolling on this new sportster.

Jaguar and Land Rover have been getting closer and closer. The two British luxury marques that once might have competed for the same customers now find themselves under the same Tata-constructed roof. And in the process they've begun sharing parts as big as engines. But you'd figure with Jaguars bound to the road and Land Rovers excelling off the beaten path, they couldn't possibly share something as fundamental as platforms, right? So you might figure, and with reasonable grounds, but you'd be wrong. That is, assuming the latest reports prove accurate.

According to Autocar, JLR will soon begin cutting back from six different platforms to just two. The major building block will be the flexible aluminum architecture underpinning the latest Jaguar XF and XJ sedans. JLR apparently figures the platform can be adapted easily enough for the high-riding, rock-jumping Land Rover and Range Rover models, as well as the upcoming new roadster from Jag, while the Discovery is reportedly slated to be replaced by a bigger version of the Freelander.

It appears that outgoing Opel chief Carl-Peter Forster may have already lined up a new gig for himself. According to The Times of London, Forster will become an employee of Tata Motors and take the top job at Jaguar-Land Rover. If this appointment comes through, it will be something of a homecoming for Forster who was born and raised in London. Additionally, Forster also ran production at BMW when it owned the late Rover Group.

Forster left General Motors Europe after publicly disagreeing with the way the company handled the aborted sale of Opel and Vauxhall to Magna International. Forster is not the only one that was not pleased with the results - most news accounts suggest that British and German governments are increasingly unlikely to help GM with its European restructuring. Tata has not publicly commented on the Forster appointment, but it could happen as soon as this week.

When the economy gets dinged, luxury vehicles gets massive dents. Jaguar and Land Rover haven't been the most profitable aut for a while, and parent company Tata is studying which of two plants it would shut to try and stem some of the losses; Solihull or Castle Bromwich.

It sounds drastic, but the pain of closing a plant and shedding underutilized capacity - about 40 percent of JLR's production overhead is going unused - could head off outright failure. Production has been pulled back already, while jobs have been cut and wages frozen, so word of the closing is just more bad news, but Jaguar Land Rover CEO David Smith is committed to taking "decisive actions" to see the storied marques through. The union, of course, is unhappy, and a meeting will be going forward between the company and GMB officials to determine what actions might be taken on both sides.

Jaguar has been touting the aluminum-intensive construction of the XJ sedan since the previous-generation model was introduced back in 2003. According to the automaker, the use of aluminum in lieu of steel can lead to an impressive 40 percent reduction in weight. That's bound to have positive effects on driving dynamics, performance and efficiency.

With its latest redesign, Jaguar claims to have improved its aluminum architecture even further, so it's not surprising that the company plans to extend the technology to the rest of its line. According to Ratan Tata, chairman of the company that now owns Jaguar Land Rover, "JLR is planning to have all its future cars constructed with light weight aluminum bodies resulting in considerable savings in weight, and reduction in CO2 emissions."

To go along with their new diets, Jaguar and Land Rover are known to be experimenting with hybrid powertrains. A kinetic energy recovery system may be in the cards for the XJ line in 2011 while Land Rover has been working on an Electric Rear Axle Drive that could debut in the upcoming LRX compact Range Rover.

India's Tata Motors has reported a net loss of $520 million (25.05 billion rupees) for the fiscal year ending in March of 2009. Over the same period one year earlier, Tata managed to earn 21.68 billion rupees in profit. What gives? Naturally, the global economic meltdown didn't do the automaker any favors, but the main problem can be sourced back to the poor performance of Jaguar and Land Rover, which the Indian automaker purchased from Ford last year with the help of a $3 billion bridge loan.

The fact that Jaguar Land Rover accounted for $504 million of that $520 million total loss means that more job cuts and plant shutdowns are in store for the ailing British duo. Says Tata Vice Chairman Ravi Kant:

We have sent people on sabbatical, gone for cheaper low-cost country sourcing and tight control in cash flows, and are assisting JLR (Jaguar Land Rover) for a major belt tightening.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Tata was in search of some £1 billion ($1.5B) in cash and underwriting help to pump into the JLR operations.

Gallery: 2010 Land Rover Discovery 4

[Source: Reuters]
Tata considers more Jaguar/Land Rover cuts after massive loss originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 26 Jun 2009 15:57:00 EST. Spy shots of the latter's test mules indicate that the updated luxury off-roaders will be distinguished by modest revisions to the bumpers, grille and headlamps, in addition to refreshed interiors.

The juicy news, however, is under the bonnet, where sources suggest the latest Jaguar engines will find their new home. In addition to Jaguar's 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel that is already confirmed to migrate to the Land Rovers, reports now indicate that the XF's 5.0-liter V8 will feature in the update SUVs, including a torque-tuned take on the supercharged version from the XFR for the most powerful Range Rovers. Considering that the engine propelled the XFR to a top speed of 225 mph at Bonneville, we could be looking at one wickedly fast Range Rover when all is said and done.

[Source: Auto Express]
Spy Shots: updated Range Rover Sport to join facelifted, Jag-engined Landies originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 28 Jan 2009 10:28:00 EST.
Click above for high-res image gallery of the 2010 Jaguar XFR

Just days after introducing what are sure to be two of its best cars in over a decade, Jaguar, along with its partner-in-crime Land Rover, has announced that it's trimming some 450 workers from its global ranks. Hardest hit will be management, which will see its membership drop by about 300 employees, with the remaining 150 coming from J-LR's hourly staff. It probably goes without saying why the reductions are necessary, but here it goes anyway... Sales were down in 2008 due to a poor global economy and the general lack of available credit, and 2009 isn't expected to shape up much better.
