Red Bull Racing employs a paddock 'spy' who keeps tabs on Formula One grand prix goings-on and gossip, in addition to having a front-row, behind-the-scenes seat in one of the sport's top teams. The energy drink firm has just given him a larger platform for his intel with the Red Bull Racing Spy app, available now for free on Apple iTunes.

It appears to cover all the angles, with race infographics, background and historical facts, galleries, race info and season calendar as well as real-time updates like track positions during the race. On top of which you can send the spy your own questions and "challenges." Who knows, the spy might be able to answer some of our own questions about the Alpine A110-50C/ZAR.

Good news, Le Mans fans. Audi has released its "Truth in 24 II: Every Second Counts" documentary as a free download on iTunes. As with the first film, this sequel is narrated by none other than Jason Statham and details the Audi battle for its tenth win at the 2011 24 Hours of Le Mans. As you may recall, the race was a nail-biter for the race team. After seeing its sister entries removed from competition, the #2 R18 TDI went on to take the checkered flag by fighting off three rival Peugeot entries.

But the story was about more than the drivers and the cars. Team engineer Leena Gade officially became the first female in history to lead a Le Mans team to an overall victory.

Audi also made another documentary about the U.S. Ski Team called "Truth in Motion," and all three films are available for free on iTunes. Check out the full press release below for more information.
Continue reading Truth in 24 II available as free download on iTunes

Truth in 24 II available as free download on iTunes originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 23 May 2012 10:58:00 EST.
The award-winning documentary Senna has been elusive for many American fans to see. It's had a limited release in theaters on the coasts, and even popped up in Netflix's Instant Streaming queue for a few accidental days, but otherwise us Yanks have had to watch from afar as everyone's been drooling over director Asif Kapadia's masterpiece about the life and death of Ayrton Senna.

That ended last week when Senna officially became available as a digital download. You can now watch the film on Netflix Instant Streaming (again) or rent it on iTunes. So far they're your only options if you live in North America, as owning this motion picture biography of the greatest Formula One driver who ever lived isn't an option until the DVD drops on March 6th, and there is no release date yet for a Blu-Ray version in the U.S.
Senna back on Netflix Instant Streaming, available for rent in iTunes originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 20 Dec 2011 18:02:00 EST.
Famed coachbuilder and industrial design studio Italdesign Guigiaro has released a free app for the Apple iPad that tracks the history of this famous design house since its founding by Giorgetto Giuguaro in 1968.

The app features a brief introduction that runs along the timeline from 1968 to 2030, showing key moments in Italdesign's past and future. You'll see Giugiaro with the Bizzarini Manta, the Alfa Romeo Alfasud and the Fiat Punto as the intro sequence plays out.

The iPad app's release follows Italdesign's new website launch last July, and its Geneva Motor Show-specific page for last year's show. If you're looking to download it, the Italdesign Giugiaro app is now available in App Stores worldwide. Click here to download it now from the iTunes Store or follow the jump for more details if you're still on the fence.
"Real" racing on a cellphone? Turn up your nose all you like, but after millions and millions of downloads, the original Real Racing for the iPhone and iPod Touch is certainly the real deal when it comes to sales performance. A sequel arrived in the iTunes Store this month that adds a suite of licensed cars, 16-player online racing and a new career mode promising 10 hours or more of mobile gearhead engrossment. Despite the game's name, it's hardly a hardcore driving simulator for your phone, but read on to see why it's just about the best $9.99 a car-loving iPhone or iPod touch gamer can spend.
Is there anywhere Top Gear hasn't gone? The hosts have crossed countries, continents, volcanoes and poles. The show has branched out from the UK to Australia, Russia, and the United States. The road show has gone around the world. And now Top Gear is landing on your Apple device with the launch of two new iOS games.

First up is Top Gear: Stunt School. The game challenges players to modify cars with over two billion different combinations of add-ons, from jet engines and wings to oversize wheels, in an effort to beat The Stig's time around the Top Gear test track.

The Stig makes an even bigger appearance in the second game, called Top Gear: Where's Stig? Based on the Where's Waldo-style kids' books, the game challenges players to find the "tame racing driver" in a variety of locations.

Prices range from $2.99 to $4.99 depending on the game and the device, with versions available for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, available directly from iTunes. iWant more details? Follow the jump for the press release and check out the images in our high-res gallery below.

We know that the all-new Hyundai Equus features an Apple iPad in place of a traditional owner's manual but now we're getting our first opportunity to see it in action. In a new ad that will certainly appeal to tech-savvy luxury car buyers, Hyundai shows off the iPad app that provides any information that an Equus owner might need to know about his or her car.

Rather than just providing written information, Hyundai has taken advantage of the iPad's capabilties to deliver an app that shows you what it's talking about, be it the Equus' available right-rear jet-style reclining seat or its adaptive headlights. Better yet, the app is free to download on iTunes regardless of whether an Equus is sitting in your driveway (so you can see what you're missing). Hop the jump to check out an ad featuring the iPad owner's manual in action. Top tip, Fred!

For many of us, music and driving go hand-in-hand. A great song can complement a great road and the overall experience of piloting a vehicle can be raised a few notches. Of course, you might even get a little overeager behind the wheel when allowing yourself to get wrapped up in the cadence of the music instead of looking at the speedo (Metallica, anyone?). Well, now there's an app for that.

By way of the Belgian organization OVK, Parents of Children Killed in Road Accidents, comes an application in the iTunes App Store called Slow Down. Play music through your Apple iPhone while the app is running and it will keep an eye on the local speed limits. Should you exceed the posted limit, the music will quite literally slow down. Push that gas pedal even harder so that you are going more than 10 miles per hour over, and the tunes will go mute. All you have to do to get them back is slow down.

We wouldn't want this for ourselves because we love music and never, ever speed. However, we could see this being the perfect tool for quelling a newly licensed hot-shoe in your family. The best part about it? It's free.

Upon unveiling its most ambitious offering at April's New York Auto Show, Hyundai also made a splash by announcing that its 2011 Equus luxury sedan would come with a multimedia tablet PC in lieu of an owner's manual. Better still, not only would the device replace the weighty glovebox staple and save a few trees, but it would also serve as a digital liason between the owner and his or her dealership, helping to schedule maintenance through its Service Valet program, remind of routine maintenance, schedule vehicle (and loaner) pick-up and delivery, and so on. Speculation was that the unnamed tablet would take the form of the iPad, but up until now, Hyundai hasn't confirmed that it is, in fact, an Apple product.

Not only can Autoblog confirm that the Equus device is an iPad, we've learned what the specific model will be. According to company sources, Hyundai will provide owners with a 16-gig, wifi-enabled (non-3G) iPad with a custom case. As is fitting for a premium automobile, the latter will be a landscape-style high-end leather case that is custom-made for Hyundai, with an embossed logo, suede-like interior and a built-in kickstand.

Most interestingly, the owner's manual program will include all of the usual text and images, but also take advantage of the iPad's display capabilities by showing videos to explain the vehicle's functions.

The Equus-specific programs will arrive pre-installed alongside all other normal iPad software, and future updates will be available through iTunes, just like any other iPad program.
The slick little program was worked up with some help from Audi, and it will keep you up to date on everything from trackside news to driver bios and team information. Everything gets separated into Audi news and other, but it still manages to be fairly complete. There's even a section full of handy tips about the track for those of you lucky enough to be able to see the action for yourself.

The best part? The app is absolutely gratis. You can check it out at the iTunes App Store.

Skobbler has introduced a completely free, turn-by-turn navigation app for the iPhone, with one new and unusual detail: you help play the role of cartographer. Sort of like Linux for thoroughfares, you download the Skobbler app and then use CloudMade, a community-sourced mapping to add "hyperlocal" detail to the map, which Skrobbler then updates on its servers. The more information gets added by community mappers, the more detailed and up-to-date the instructions are available to the nav-app's users, with updates pushed to the program in real-time. We're unsure of how granular the details are in the current CloudMade maps, but the app is free and this could be your chance to be a pioneer.
If you want to draw hot rods and learn the basics of drawing cars, then you'll want to check out the Hot Rod Art Book for the iPad. A combination of the text-only book and the videos you'll find at the book's site and Vimeo, it contains 100 pages of guidance and tips from 13 professional hot rod artists and 1.5 hours of videos. It's not going to instantly turn you into Hot Wheels designer Dwayne Vance, one of the contributors, but you'll know how to pen the Powell Motors Homer just like you've always wanted.
Chris Shunk, Sam Abuelsamid, Chris Paukert and Dan Roth are joined by the car executive we all wish we could be when we grow up, General Motors Vice Chairman Bob Lutz. After an hour of peppering Bob with questions about his career, we come away better informed as to where the man stands on the industry's future, how GM will fare, his favorite concept cars, what he plans to do in his retirement, and - pivotally - how to get your wife to let you buy a MiG fighter jet. It's a hour and thirteen minutes of class lecture from Mr. Lutz. Enjoy!

Audi's got a thing going with its Truth in Motion films. The first installment took a lush, slow-motion look at what it took to win the 2008 24 Hours of Le Mans, and this second installment charts the U.S. ski team's snow-and-drama-covered run to the 2010 Winter Olympics. Like that first doc, it is now available free in iTunes in both regular and HD resolutions. You can read Audi's press release after the jump, or better yet, click the link and get straight to downloading.

Getting the latest episodes of Top Gear on the revolutionary side of the Atlantic has always been a bit of a misadventure. Some episodes were aired on the Discovery Channel. BBC America ran a few as well. And of course there was the ill-fated NBC project to Americanize the program, much as they did in Australia, which never panned out. But with all these ups and downs, the internet has been the only reliable way of watching the show enjoyed by car nuts world wide.

Now reports indicate, however, that the show will be returning (hopefully on a permanent basis) to BBC America. FinalGear, the online clearing house of all things related to British car shows, reports that Series 13 - the show's previous season - will begin airing on Monday, January 25 at 8 pm. Once 13 has run out, the Beeb's Yankee channel will immediately commence showing the 14th season that's currently on the air back in the Isles. That ought to start on March 15. And to sweeten the deal, each episode will be made available on iTunes for $2 apiece 24 hours after they've been shown on BBC America. So whether your cable box or your iTunes is your chosen purveyor of visual entertainment, you've got your options laid out for you.

[Source: FinalGear]
Top Gear returning to BBC America this month originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 12 Jan 2010 09:59:00 EST. If you're hooked on trying to figure out whether a car is beyond uncool, like the Fiat Panda, or Sub Zero, like the Ford GT, then there's an app for that.

It's called "Cool Wall," and you can get it over at Apple's iTunes store. Looks like TG may have released the app before it was finished cooking, however: it's $1.99 and so far, the reviews are mixed, with purchasers complaining about things like cropped pictures of cars. The app page claims updates are on the way, but buyer beware in the meantime. Thanks for the tip, Bryan!

[Source: Top Gear via iTunes]
Top Gear Cool Wall lands in iTunes app store originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 31 Dec 2009 09:28:00 EST.
Here's another first for Ford after the revelation of its motion-capturing software: The Blue Oval will be the first to offer iTunes tagging through iPods on SYNC-equipped vehicles. Right behind the announcement of mobile Internet connectivity being added to SYNC, this will go along with the package of mobile apps the carmaker will reveal at CES next month.

The way it works: if you you have SYNC with HD radio, when you hear a song you like on an HD station you can press the 'Tag' button, and the system will note the track. When you plug your iPod in, it will suck up all of those tracks in a 'Tagged' playlist. You can have another listen through them and then buy the ones you want from iTunes.

There are other makes of vehicles that will let you record songs directly onto the car's hard drive for a fixed amount of time, but you can't really do anything with the recording after that. Ford's setup won't get you that immediate satisfaction, but it will save you a few steps. You can read the press release on the new - and free - feature (provided you've paid for SYNC and the HD-equipped head unit) after the jump.
CNET is offering us a sneak-peek at Volkswagen's latest iteration from the company's Electronic Research Laboratory (ERL). Developed with Intel, the new system uses Global Open Research Infotainment Architecture, or GLORIA.

Most systems today us a joystick-like device, touch screen, or hard buttons on the edge of the display (or a combination of the three) to control the inputs. Volkswagen's new GLORIA system takes it one step further by making Apple iPhone-like "gesture control" possible. This means that users are able to navigate quickly by simply tracing single letters across the pressure-sensitive display. Another unique feature may allow users to import third-party widgets for the system, much like consumers currently load apps from iTunes onto their iPhones. As cool as it sounds, GLORIA is still under development and she isn't expected to see showrooms for a few more years.

[Source: CNET, Photo by CNET]
REPORT: Volkswagen's next-gen nav system to get Apple iPhone-like gestures originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 21 May 2009 13:29:00 EST.
What automaker isn't trying to cash in on the iCraze? Most are scrambling to include iPod and iPhone integration into their newest vehicles, and many have tried to mimic the look and feel of the Apple devices with their latest concepts. The "people's car" has as good a claim as any other automaker, and Volkswagen is looking to cement that with a new game for the iPhone and iPod touch.

Developed by German mobile game studio Fishlabs, the Volkswagen Polo Challenge, like other racing games, works with the devices' built-in accelerometer to control the car. Players can choose between eight different circuits to drive on while being serenaded by the music of Feinkost. When they're done playing, mobile gamers can find the nearest VW dealership to check out the car in person.

Just a month after its release, already 1.4 million people have downloaded the free game from iTunes. (Volkswagen's Spanish subsidiary has also released a similar game highlighting the Seat Ibiza Cupra.) If you can read German, you can check out more info in the press release after the jump, along with the images in the gallery below.
Continue reading People's Choice: 1.4m downloads for VW Polo Challenge iPhone game

People's Choice: 1.4m downloads for VW Polo Challenge iPhone game originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 15 Apr 2009 08:01:00 EST. Shows are available either ala carte for $1.99 an episode or you can purchase a season pass for $14.99. And although we've already watched season 10 (and 11) at least twice, it's nice to know there's a legal means of getting our fix before Top Gear returns on November 2nd.
Top Gear Season 10, now available on iTunes originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 21 Oct 2008 13:59:00 EST.
