When the upcoming Marvel reunion The Avengers hits the silver screen, it promises to be packed with action. Action heros like Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America... and a new Acura NSX.

Wait, what? That's right: if the latest rumors from Auto Express prove true, that mystery Acura supercar that Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) has been spied driving on the set of the upcoming superhero flick will be our first glimpse at the new supercar from Honda's premium marque.

The neo-NSX will reportedly pack the through-the-road all-wheel-drive hybrid drivetrain from the 2001 Honda Dual Note concept, encompassing a 3.5 to 3.7-liter V6 driving the rear wheels and an electric hub motor in each of the front wheels.

Tipped to be priced to take on the Nissan GT-R, the new NSX could be the Honda supercar we've been waiting for. For its part, Honda officials continue to deny that Tony Stark's car is representative of a new NSX, so we'll believe it when we see it (and we don't just mean at the movies).

Here's our chance. If we all come together, pool our resources and work for the common good, we can buy two of the Ford Mustangs used in the filming of the thankfully-deceased Knight Rider remake. Why would we want to lay our hands on the distastefully-modified NBC creations? To kill them with fire. Think of it: a world in which the only bad Knight Rider was the original Knight Rider; a world where children are safe from thinking that KITT was anything other than the world's most awesome self-aware Trans Am. We can do this.

The KR cars have cropped up with a handful of other, more famous TV and movie cars headed for a Mecum auction. Alongside the Knight Industries travesties, the well-moneyed out there can bid on the likes of the two unused Cobra body shells from the first Iron Man and a certain tiger-ferrying 1965 Mercedes-Benz 220SE Convertible from The Hangover. A few other lust-worthy models are also set to stand before the gavel, including the My Name is Earl El Camino and a 2001 Buell police bike used in Terminator: Rise of the Machines.

Of course, all of those pale in comparison to our chance to right history's wrong. We can't do anything for Nunez's damaged sanity at this point, but we can keep someone else from preserving these disasters for posterity. We need to hurry, though. The auction kicks off May 19 at the Indiana Fair Grounds.

Iron Man 2 movie footage - Click above to watch the video after the break

What is it with Iron Man movies and the wanton destruction of perfectly good, desirable automobiles? In the first flick, the crew purposely crashed a pair of Audi R8 coupes, and neither sequence actually made it into the final film. For their sophomore effort, the crew reportedly dissected a pair of Rolls-Royce Phantoms - supposedly the first two identical machines that the famous marque has built.

According to The New York Times, the two luxury cars were cut up and slapped back together with strategically placed pyrotechnics to give the illusion that they were being sheared apart in real time. At least this time, the trashed Rollers actually do make an appearance in the final cut, though how they got there is a story unto itself.

It seems that, instead of filming the scenes at the Monaco GP circuit as originally planned - though approved by the government of Monaco, F1's no-fun chief Bernie Ecclestone rather unsurprisingly nixed the idea - the actual filming was done in Southern California on a makeshift Monaco replica track at the location that the first Space Shuttle was built. The fake grandstands were filled with inflatable blow-up doll fans. Monaco backdrops were the added in post-production.

In addition to the Rolls-Royce jigsaw puzzles, there were eight cars supplied by the Historic Grand Prix Association along with two running race cars built specifically for the movie using molds of a 1978 F1 car, powered by 5.7-liter GM V8 crate engines. Seventeen more non-running prop cars were built. Our friend Tanner Foust was the stunt driver of the blue and white Stark Industries car. Finally, though the other F1 replica car says Elon Musk on its side, we don't think the Tesla exec was actually behind the wheel.

The result? Movie Magic... maybe - we haven't yet gone to the theater to see Iron Man 2, which opened up just today. We'll get back to you in a bit. Audi R8 Spyder in Iron Man 2 - Click above to watch video after the jump

We're officially counting down the days until Iron Man 2 hits theaters on May 7. The sequel to one of our favorite superhero flicks is set to boast a serious cast, including performances by Don Cheadle and Micky Rourke. Speaking of those two, the actors will be bringing two of the best characters from the Iron Man universe to life - War Machine and Whiplash. Oh yes. It will be good.

Of course, one of the best parts of watching Robert Downey Jr. play the part of spoiled playboy Tony Stark is drooling over the guy's bachelor pad/garage. We would give unmentionable portions of our anatomy to have our very own holographic drafting table and pint-sized manufacturing facility stashed downstairs. You can go ahead and throw in the flathead '32 roadster while you're at it.

Audi has once again teamed up with Marvel for Iron Man 2. A new ad from the company shows off the R8 Spyder as one of Stark's main rides, which makes sense considering the car was spotted on the set not too long ago. Ask yourself: What could possibly be better than your very own real-life Batman-inspired leather motorcycle suit? Well now, that would have to depend on your particular comic book leanings, wouldn't it? If your affections lie away from DC and more towards Marvel, we have some particularly excellent news to share. Soon, you'll be able to pick up a functional motorcycle riding suit made up to look like either Wolverine or Iron Man. Oh, and a Tron Legacy suit is also reportedly in the works.

If your desire is to dress yourself up as the adamantium-soaked Wolverine, you can head right on over to Universal Designs to order your brand-new officially licensed riding suit, based on the actual movie suit used in the X2: X-Men United. Sadly, go-go-gadget knuckle-mounted claws not included.

If you can't quite pull off Wolverine's dual-horned head of hair, no worries. UD reassures us that it's hard at work on a licensed replica of Tony Stark's Mark V Suitcase Suit that will be seen in Marvel's upcoming Iron Man 2, which will be released in the U.S. on May 7.

In case you were wondering, there's actual safety built into these riding suits as well. According to UD, each suit "incorporates removable CE-approved body armor [and] gloves with built-in anti-skid Kevlar in the palm's leather lining." Of all the fictitious captains of industry and superheroes ever to grace the silver screen, Tony Stark's got to be one of our favorites. Why? Well aside from flying around the world in his super-suit and kickin' terrorist butt, he's also a hardcore car guy. Just look at the Audi R8, Saleen S7 and the poor old Shelby Cobra he nearly ruined in the first episode. Now the sequel is almost upon us, and Tony is taking to the track in a Stark Industries-sponsored single-seater. (See for yourself in the trailer after the jump.) But though the company and its eponymous chief may be fictitious, that won't stop them from actually sponsoring a real race car of their own.

As you can see from the photo above, Iron Man 2 will be sponsoring Stephan Verdier's Crawford Performance-prepped Subaru Impreza in this season's Formula Drift series. That's nothing new: Movies, superhero movies especially, often sponsor racing teams. (Just check out David Coulthard on the podium in a superman cape or Jarno Trulli riding the bat-pod to see what we mean.) But if you look closer, you'll see the Stark logo on the quarter-panel. So while we wait to see Stark's on-screen heroics in the upcoming movie, we can enjoy Verdier's on-track heroics in Formula D as well. Top Tip, Andy!

Stafford Audi, a U.K. Audi dealer, placed an advertisement on the popular website Pistonheads for the forthcoming R8 Spider. For a picture of the car, they used an uncamouflaged picture of an R8 Spider from the Iron Man sequel, as you can see from the California license plate that reads "Stark." According to the ad, though, the car was "spotted testing in Germany."

The ad copy goes on to say that the production car will differ from the coupe in the lack of side blades, extra air intakes behind the rear seats, a different location for the fuel filler cap, and the addition of rollover hoops that we assume are hidden until needed.

The car won't make its debut until the Geneva Motor Show in March 2010, but you can deposit down on one right now with Stafford. Estimated price: £105,000 ($177K U.S.).

The first Iron Man movie, which came out in May, 2008, turned out to be a very supercar friendly affair. Among the vehicles in Tony Stark's multi-million dollar garage were a Saleen S7, a Shelby Cobra, a Tesla Roadster and an Audi R8. Stark even worked on a 1932 Ford Flathead roadster when he wasn't killing bad guys.

We were assuming the billionaire superhero genius will continue to have a great stable of rides in the next installment of the series, and spy photos taken on set confirm our suspicions. Robert Downey Jr. is seen driving in an Audi R8 V10 Spider during shooting of the film, which is scheduled to be released on May 7, 2010. In one of the spy photos, the V10 badging is clearly visible, confirming that Stark's drop-top R8 will be powered by VW's corporate 5.2-liter V10. With an expected 525 horsepower,the Audi R8 V10 Spider looks like our kind of Arc reactor.

Audi is obviously pleased with the product placement monopoly it's acquired on the upcoming blockbuster movie Iron Man starring Robert Downey, Jr., Jeff Bridges and Gwyneth Paltrow, among others. Sharing the screen with those actors will be the Audi R8 - Tony Stark's personal daily driver, an airborne Q7 SUV, and no doubt many other autos branded with the four rings that are subtly slipped in here and there. To drive home the point that Audi is as hip as can be, the German automaker has launched an Iron Man mini-site that, at the moment, looks pretty flashy but lacks much substance. There are of course movie stills, which you can check out below in our own gallery sans the flash interface, as well as the trailer and a few brief video clips that are new and heavily infused with Audi products. Other than that, there's also a breakdown of the Audi R8 and its features, which you could also find on Audi's regular website, as well as character bios (Did you know Stark's assistant, Virginia Potts, drives an S5?). Regardless of how heavy handed Audi is with the product placement, we still expect Iron Man to be an epic on-screen adventure and orders of magnitude better than that other car movie coming out this summer.

The next television spot for Jon Favreau's Iron Man will debut this weekend during (what else) the Super Bowl. Quint at Ain't It Cool News posted a screen capture released by the studio that shows our billionaire industrialist hero, Tony Stark, working in his garage on the armor's glove- and boot-mounted boosters. And what a nice garage it is, boasting not just Tony's R8, but a Shelby Cobra, a Saleen S7, a Tesla Roadster, and a pair of bikes we can't identify (weigh in if you can). Bruce Wayne, eat your heart out.

Our sister blog, Cinematical, is covering Comic-Con in San Diego and lo and behold, what did they spot out in front of the convention center? Tony Stark's Audi R8. This is just an early tease for Fanboy Nation, and this major product tie-in that will also see several other Audis cross the screen in Iron Man. The silver R8 was parked out front sporting the plate "Stark 4." Priceless. Robert Downey, Jr. portrays the armor-sporting hero in this newest comic-book-to-big-screen adaptation, which, if the reports on the footage shown at the convention are accurate, is going to kick ass. Don't tell Toyota, but Iron Man drives an Audi - at least in the movies. Not to be confused with longtime Toyota off-road truck racer Ivan "Iron Man" Stewart, we're talking about Tony "Iron Man" Stark here. Word from Variety is that the newest big screen superhero will be piloting Audi's latest supercar, the R8. The Ingolstadt flyer was chosen by Marvel Studios and Paramount Pictures to be the personal wheels of billionaire industrialist Tony Stark. At least when he's not donning his armor as Iron Man, he'll be tooling around in this mid-engine stunner. And from the sound of it, the movie will be a family affair with the A6, Q7 and the upcoming S5 playing supporting roles. Expect a huge movie tie-in campaign for the film's release that's scheduled for May 2 of next year.
