In a move that will likely forever change the relationship between handheld wireless devices and automotive infotainment systems, reports say that Apple is working closely with multiple automakers to integrate its iOS Maps and Siri voice-activated systems seamlessly into vehicles. According to those familiar with the plans, Apple is designing updated versions of center consoles that allow iOS devices (like the iPhone or iPad) to be plugged directly into the vehicle. When initiated, the vehicle's built-in display becomes the iOS interface - with direct access to Apple Maps and other Siri-enabled services. Future plans may include even deeper interaction, with the Apple device assisting with realtime vehicle diagnostics.

This isn't the the first time Apple's name has come up on the pages of Autoblog, as it has been synonymous with the industry for years. The technology giant has not only admitted that it once considered making its own car, but it has integrated iPod/iPad devices into vehicles, replaced owner's manuals and supported specialized vehicle apps for countless brands. But this latest news is much more aggressive, as it shows that Apple isn't just interested supplying aftermarket solutions, but embedding itself into the industry as it seeks to replace OEM equipment.
Apple wants to embed iOS in your dash originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 02 May 2013 09:13:00 EST.
If you've ever pondered on whether an Apache helicopter is faster than a Bugatti Veyron, a father and son duo have come up with an iPad app that can help you out with your quandary. The What's Faster app lines up over 625,000 comparisons across a total of 32 categories, including everything from cars and motorcycles to commercial aircraft and South American roller coasters. The game pairs selections from each category and asks the user to pick the quickest to proceed. Get in a bind, and you can us a handy radar gun to figure out each selection's top speed.

The app also has plenty of information on each vehicle/beast/aircraft you come across. If you like the sound of that party, you can download What's Faster from the App Store for $1.99. For those of you who aren't counting, that's 0.03 cents per comparison. Seems like a steal to us. Head over to the app's site for more information, and be sure to check out the video below.
Continue reading Father and son create What's Faster app for iPad [w/video]

Father and son create What's Faster app for iPad [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 29 Jan 2013 08:27:00 EST. Apple Maps is the beautiful but flawed pile of poo that just keeps on steaming. Not long after it appeared in the company's latest operating system, people noticed that it had a habit of showing destinations in the wrong locations, like a museum located underwater, or refusing to show locations at all, like the town of Stratford-Upon-Avon and most of a few world metropolises. The CEO apologized once, was met with hilarious rejoinders, then apologized again and recommended other map solutions, and the guy in charge of Apple Maps was shown the door, which Apple was indeed able to find.

None of that has apparently helped drivers looking for the town of Mildura, in Victoria, Australia however. Apple Maps still places the hamlet in the middle of the Murray-Sunset National Park, about 44 miles southwest of its actual location. The displaced location map issue has reportedly left six drivers lost or stranded in the national park for up to 24 hours without food or water, in temperatures that can reach up to 115 degrees in the Outback with no phone reception. Six people have had to be rescued in the past two months, and now Mildura police have issued a statement calling the situation "a life threatening issue," urging caution when using Apple Maps.

Apple's iPad mini has not been on the market very long, but some aftermarket shops are already installing the tablet into a car. We saw this practice with the iPad and iPad 2, but the 7.9-inch version of the Apple product could be ideal for automotive integration.

Florida-based "Soundwaves of Tampa" has become the first outfit that we know of to install the iPad Mini in a passenger car. The vehicle of choice? A 2012 Toyota Corolla. The iPad Mini was worked into the center console of the compact sedan by replacing the stereo DIN with a custom mount. It slides out of the side, and has a seamless appearance when installed.

So what will it take to bring the iPad's functionality to your car? According to the Soundwaves of Tampa YouTube page, the tablet can be installed in most cars for $800, not including the $329-659 price of the iPad Mini. The company is quick to point out that the installation price will vary based on the vehicle in which the tablet would be installed. Check out the video below to let one of the creative individuals from Soundwaves of Tampa best describe the product.
Continue reading Check out the first in-car install of Apple iPad Mini

Check out the first in-car install of Apple iPad Mini originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 07 Nov 2012 12:33:00 EST. The minds at GoPro have been busy lately. Earlier this month, the company pulled the wraps off its long-awaited app for the iPhone and iPad. When combined with the optional WiFi BacPac for the Hero2, the application can link to multiple cameras to change settings on the fly, as well as preview video and photos without having to remove the camera from its case or mount. Even better, the software is free, though GoPro will ask you to pony up around $60 for the WiFi add on. While the app is only available for Apple devices at the moment, GoPro says an Android version is in the works.

That's exciting and all, but not nearly as much as word that the new Hero3 has officially hit the market. The Hero3 Black Edition is a full 30 percent smaller than its predecessor, which means its also a quarter lighter. Designers made the gadget twice as powerful, though, building in 1440p video at 48 frames per second, 1080p at 60 fps, and 720p at 120 fps. Even more surprising, the camera can click off 12-megapixel photos at a staggering 30 shots per second. WiFi is now built in, and the Black Edition includes the handy WiFi remote.
Audi recently whipped up an interesting piece of advertising in Toronto's Royal Bank Plaza. Partnering with Slot Mods USA, the German manufacturer created a handmade slot car track, complete with a set of scale Audi A4 models. Slot Mods USA employed some pretty interesting tech to create the cars. Using an industrial laser scanner, the company built a digital outline of the sedan before sending it off to a 3D printer to create the bodyshells. Slot Mods USA then sourced an all-wheel-drive slot car chassis from a separate company.

Given how much emphasis Audi puts on traction, the cars were built with special magnets to keep them planted on the track, and each racer was built with a mini camera that can feed images to an iPad wirelessly. Drivers control each car via an iPad app, and the camera feed gives operators an idea of what it's like to drive on the scale creation. Check out a few videos of the track below.
Continue reading Audi creates custom A4 slot car track [w/video]

Audi creates custom A4 slot car track [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 03 Oct 2012 12:45:00 EST.
Do you love your car? Like, really love your car? How about your iPhone? According to Forbes, a group called New Media Metrics has a way to quantify just how much you adore your devices, and how that emotional connection determines your purchasing behavior.

The metric is called Leveraging Emotional Attachment for Profit, or LEAP, and just like it sounds, it measures how much we love products. That affection will likely lead to purchase to fill that attachment. The LEAP index began in 2010, and for the first two year the iPod topped the list, only to be unseated by the iPhone this year. Tech is a key factor as these devices have become extensions of ourselves.

The top automaker on this list, and ranked third overall, is the Infiniti brand. Its high ranking speaks to the significance of technology in the LEAP index. While many automakers offer a wealth of in-car tech, for Infiniti, it's a defining characteristic. Features like the around-view monitor and real-time traffic and weather updates have become key selling points for the Japanese luxury brand.

The next automaker on the list is Cadillac, at the sixth spot, followed followed by BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz and Land Rover in spots 13 through 16, respectfully. Given Cadillac's lead over the tech-heavy German automakers it will be interesting to see how the rollout of Cadillac's CUE-equipped vehicles affects its rankings in the years to come. Check out the rest of this list and see where your favorite brands stack up below.
Continue reading Infiniti registers highest emotional attachment among car brands

Infiniti registers highest emotional attachment among car brands originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 23 Sep 2012 10:02:00 EST.
A Los Angeles man is being accused of using his 2003 BMW X5 as a battering ram to break into an Apple Store in Temecula, CA last week. The morning robbery on September 6 was caught by surveillance cameras, which show the BMW barreling through the store's glass front and a number of masked men hopping out to snatch iPhone and iPad display models.

What the LA driver didn't anticipate was the Apple Store not giving up its goods without a fight. After the BMW went grille-first through the glass, a security gate dropped down, trapping the criminals and their getaway car inside. The video below shows the driver repeatedly ramming the gate with his BMW, pulling forward and knocking over displays covered in iPhones, iPads and computers each time to do it.

The driver eventually extricates his X5 from the Apple Store, but the CUV was in such bad shape that police report it didn't make it far from the scene. Having to deal quickly with two flat tires, the driver and his crew reportedly swapped out one for the spare and visited a nearby 7-11 to steal some Fix-A-Flat. The accused driver, Equonne R. Howard, was detained near the scene of the crime a few hours later. Police think he returned looking for his license plate that fell off in the kerfuffle with the security gate.

Howard is being held on $600,000 bail, which is what reports say the damage to the Apple Store is estimated at. He's been charged with enough counts to fill two pages of complaints, which include vandalism, burglary and theft of electronics. Apple Store burglaries have become increasingly common as the popularity of the company's products has gone meteoric, but we've never seen one botched so thoroughly, nor one that clumsily uses a BMW to pick the lock.
Continue reading Apple Store fights back against BMW X5-driving burglars

Apple Store fights back against BMW X5-driving burglars originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 14 Sep 2012 11:58:00 EST.
Long lines, short tempers, small staffs and big demand make for a hellish experience at the DMV. The great, wide state of Tennessee is looking to technology for relief. Around the state, at 26 DMV offices, the state's Department of Homeland Security has deployed 76 Apple iPads for drivers renewing their licenses.

Being the creation of a government agency, the program gets its own acronym: ASSETS (automatic self service electronic terminals). Each iPad has proprietary apps installed that let drivers get their renewed licenses within minutes. They can also change their addresses and, in the near future, will be able to schedule road-test appointments.

ASSETTS cost $79,200 and replaced old equipment already being replaced. While Tennessee residents won't be able to put the app on their own iPads, the same services are available online.

That's where the House that Jobs Built unveiled its latest operating systems for both computers and mobile devices, its latest laptop computer design and more. But what does this all have to do with cars, you ask? Plenty.

First off, Apple used the high-profile press conference extravaganza to announce the integration of its Siri voice service into cars, starting with nine automakers (among them the massive General Motors group) that will be putting a dedicated button on their steering wheels to allow drivers to activate the service on their iPhones and iPads without taking their hands off the wheel or their eyes off the road. But that's not all that's of relevance to motorists from WWDC 2012.

Apple has also announced the launch of its own Maps application, replacing the Google Maps utility it had begrudgingly integrated into its devices until now. Resulting from Apple's acquisition of several erstwhile independent digital cartography operations, Maps aims to improve on the popular Google service with such features as spoken turn-by-turn directions with real-time ETA, smooth-scrolling 3D imaging, aerial flyover views of city centers and important landmarks, Siri integration and real-time traffic information.

The latter is reportedly crowdsourced anonymously from other users, leaving us with some questions regarding privacy issues. But we'll leave that to the guys with the tin-foil hats while we blissfully revel in Big Brother's latest offering to the masses. Follow the links below to see what Apple has in store in greater detail.
Apple gives Google Maps the boot, adds free turn-by-turn navigation to iPhone originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 12 Jun 2012 10:44:00 EST. Apple's 2012 Worldwide Developer's Conference keynote is winding down as you read this, and while many car enthusiasts could care less about the next version of iOS or the MacBook Pro's new Retina Display, they will probably care about one piece of news just delivered by Apple's VP of iOS Software, Scott Forstall: Apple is going to add a new button to your car.

Called Eyes Free, it's basically just a steering wheel-mounted button that will activate Siri on the iPhone or iPad (yes, they announced Siri is coming to the new iPad, too) you have with you in the car. Likely paired over Bluetooth, Eyes Free will let you talk to Siri through the car, giving you access to a wealth of information without using both your eyes and hands (except for that initial button press). And since this is Apple, automakers are apparently lining up to add Siri buttons to their steering wheels. Apple reports that BMW, General Motors, Mercedes-Benz, Land Rover, Jaguar, Audi, Toyota, Chrysler and Honda are all signed up to start offering Eyes Free within the next 12 months.

We find it curious that GM has chosen to participate, considering that what Siri offers is not at all unlike what the automaker's subscription-based OnStar service provides. Conspicuously missing from the list of on-board automakers is Ford, whose Sync infotainment systems are all based on Microsoft-branded technology.
Apple adding a new button to your car, will activate Siri originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 11 Jun 2012 14:58:00 EST. If you read the owner's manual of your car you'd begin to realize how much of your own vehicle you didn't know about. If it's a car made within the past few years, then the owner's manual covering the dirty bits will be joined by an even thicker manual that covers just the infotainment system. Cadillac, however, has a better way for buyers to learn the CUE-powered mysteries of the $44,995 XTS: give owners an iPad with the car, loaded with tutorials on how to get the most out of the Cadillac User Experience system.

Yes, when the Hyundai Equus was introduced it came with an iPad installed with a multimedia version of its owner's manual. Based on Wired's discussion with Cadillac, however, this is much wider implementation, with each Cadillac dealer required to have two "certified technology experts" on duty, plus a CUE call center for owners, an online media team looks for CUE questions to answer, and a mobile CUE specialist who makes house calls. The point seems to be that this isn't about getting an iPad with your car, it's about understanding ever tech thing your car can do. If you still don't know how to access the full power of your XTS, it will only be because you don't want to.
Ford is making it easier to access tablet devices in its cars, enabling users of iPad, Kindle, Nook and other tablets to control their devices with their voices instead of their hands.

The move is bound to set safety advocates atwitter, who argue there are already too many distractions behind the wheel. Just last month the issue again took front stage after the death of 18-year-old Taylor Sauer, who crashed her car into a tanker truck while texting. Ford, however, said the upgrade of its MyFord Touch system is out of concern for driver safety.

"Drivers are bringing these devices into the car already," said Alan Hall, a spokesman for Ford. "We're allowing them to access the content in a safer way."

Ford began shipping upgrades to its voice-activated MyFord Touch entertainment system on Monday, with the tablet compatibility built in. The automaker has taken a big hit to its quality reputation because of MyFord Touch, which consumers have complained is slow, unreliable and hard to use.

The upgrade to MyFord Touch and its underlying SYNC technology allows more devices to work with voice activation or through controls on the steering wheel, although most still won't charge. Devices including the iPad, Kindle Fire, HP Touchpad, Nook Color and Sony Tablet S need more electricity than Ford's outlets provide.

Ford hopes the iPad 3, set to be revealed today, will be compatible with the upgrade, Ostrowski said. He also said that Ford engineers will have to order iPad 3s like everyone else to find out.

Ford makes voice control easier for iPad and other devices originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 07 Mar 2012 13:20:00 EST.
The Bentley Mulsanne Executive Interior Concept has officially dropped the "Concept" portion of its name. Making the most of the rear quarters in the Mulsanne, the boffins at Bentley have installed power-folding wood veneer picnic tables that are topped by iPads and Bluetooth wireless keyboards, additionally controlled by Apple's Magic trackpads. In the armrest are a telephone and a Tibaldi pen, and in the trunk is a Mac Mini computer.

None of that counts the eight-inch screens in the headrests or the 15.6-inch screen that drops from the roof. Those are controlled by the Bentley app installed on the iPads, with listening handled by Bluetooth headphones.

It takes 170 hours for the craftsmen to complete the work of installation, and if you need to ask how much their time adds to the cost of a Mulsanne, then you already know the answer. More details in the press release after the jump.
Continue reading Bentley putting Executive Interior concept into production on Mulsanne

Bentley putting Executive Interior concept into production on Mulsanne originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 05 Mar 2012 10:32:00 EST.
DashCommand for Windows, Android and iOS has been around for a while, but the most recent update for the iPhone allows you to view all the OBD-II-sourced data directly on your Pioneer AppRadio.

As we've said before, the real draw of the AppRadio isn't just its 6.1-inch, capacitive multi-touch screen, it's the ability for third parties to integrate their apps into the display. In the case of DashCommand, you can port over 229 different data points through your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch using an OBDII connector. A maximum of 27 customizable gauges show you everything from coolant temps to check engine lights, and using the built-in accelerometer and GPS systems, you can also display an inclinometer, G-forces and even race track mapping. Get all the details in at DashCommand's site.
DashCommand update integrates with Pioneer AppRadio originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 27 Dec 2011 08:01:00 EST.

Road Inc. is like an interactive coffee table book of classic cars.

It's become the hackneyed phrase of the decade, but yes, there's an app for that. And this, and the other. So when we tell you that Pyrolia's Road Inc. is a must-have for iPad owners, you might think we're exaggerating, that this is just one of those dozens of apps that one day you might get around to downloading, but then again, you might not. Should you choose to interpret our suggestion in that fashion, you would be wrong. And if you miss the opportunity to download it today, for just $0.99 instead of the usual $9.99 price, well then, you're just foolish.

Disney is looking to give younger children an excuse other than Angry Birds to play with their parents' Apple iPad. The company's new AppMates toys feature small Cars 2 characters with unique sensors inside them. Download a free application, place the toys on the screen, and kids can drive around a virtual interpretation of Radiator Springs. There are even games and missions to complete for older tikes. Each set comes with two characters for $19.99, and with the potential for endless updates to the Radiator Springs universe, chances are good that kids won't get bored of the game too quickly.

Of course, the only question is, who wants to hand over their tablet to their child aged four to nine? Fortunately, Disney has thought of that, too, and will release a well-padded Cars 2-themed iPad case later down the line. That little piece of kit will set you back a heady $49, but that's considerably less than the cost of a brand-new iPad. Hit the jump to take a look at a video of the AppMates in action.
Continue reading Disney AppMates creates interactive iPad experience with Pixar's CARS

Disney AppMates creates interactive iPad experience with Pixar's CARS originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 28 Sep 2011 10:30:00 EST.
According to a report from USA Today, Hyundai will no longer be offering a free Apple iPad with the purchase of its Equus flagship sedan. Currently, the iPad serves as a sort of interactive owners manual, allowing customers to learn about all of their car's features, locate dealerships and even schedule service appointments. It's pretty slick, and a unique selling point for the Equus, but for the 2012 model year, this feature has been discontinued.

In speaking to USA Today, Hyundai spokesperson Jim Trainor said that the iPads were only intended to be a one-year promotion for the Equus' first year of sales in the United States. Every Equus comes with a prolific dead-tree manual, and this will now be the only reference point for Equus information moving forward. Trainor added that the Equus iPad app will still be available for download on customers' personal devices - the Apple product simply won't be included with the purchase of the vehicle.

We've had many chances to play around with the Hyundai iPad app, and we've even used it to schedule service appointments for our long-term 2011 Equus Ultimate. Follow the jump for a video of the iPad app in action.
Continue reading Hyundai Equus no longer comes with free Apple iPad [w/video]

Hyundai Equus no longer comes with free Apple iPad [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 11 Aug 2011 13:00:00 EST.
