The Internet Car and Truck of the Year voting jury has just announced its pair of winners for 2011, and top honors go to both the Cadillac CTS-V and Jeep Grand Cherokee. For 2011, the CTS-V is offered in a trio of body styles, all of which boast a 556-horsepower supercharged V8 and seriously good driving dynamics. Likewise, the 2011 Grand Cherokee remains one of the best off-road vehicles in its class, and points the way forward for the "new Chrysler."

2011 Ford Mustang GTIn addition to the vehicles picked by the Internet Car and Truck of the Year jurors, the motoring public was able to cast its vote for the "Average Joe" awards. Unlike the professional jury, the public voters named the 2011 Ford Mustang GT as Car of the Year, its new 5.0-liter V8 and reworked suspension geometry making it more of a true sports car than a stereotypical muscle car. However, both the "Internet Pros" and "Average Joes" saw eye to eye on the Truck of the Year award, with the Grand Cherokee taking the cake from both segments of voters.

Vehicles aside, the ICTOY jury also honored recently deceased and legendary automotive journalist Jerry Flint with the 2010 Journalist of the Year award. Flint, who died on August 7th of this year, covered the automotive beat for over 50 years, and was once named one of the 100 most prominent business reporters of the 20th century.

For the first time, the Internet Car and Truck of the year organization presented Mazda and Chevrolet with a number of well-earned awards at the Chicago Auto Show. Mazda won with its freshly updated 2010 Mazda3 in the car category, beating out such worthy candidates as the Ford Fusion Hybrid and the Shelby GT500.

However, the big winner was Chevrolet, with the Equinox taking home prizes for two separate categories - Internet Truck of the Year and Consumer Internet Truck of the Year - while the Camaro snagged the Consumer Internet Car of the Year. Our particular favorite award, though, was for the Internet Automotive Journalist of the Year.

Why? Well, it was won by none other than our very own and highly esteemed Editor-in-Chief, John Neff. For those keeping track, Neff has won the award every single year that it's been presented. Nicely done, John.

The Internet Car and Truck of the Year (ICTY) keeps chugging along and hit something of a milestone yesterday as head man Keith Griffin released the news that the seven finalists in each category have been further whittled down to just three a piece. In case you didn't know, the ICTY is following an "Internet Pro and Average Joe" format, because, well - it's the internet. Meaning that twelve experts (hi mom!) voted on what they think the Internet Car/Truck of the year should be, as well as the collective mob voices of all you online types. Meaning that a total of four awards will be given out. Two by us online journalist types, and two by the citizens of the internet.

Now that all that's out of the way, let's look at which cars (and trucks) have made it. During the semis, the car choices were the Chevrolet Camaro SS, Ford Fusion Hybrid and Taurus SHO, Kia Forte sedan, Mazda3, Nissan Cube and Ford Shelby Mustang GT500. As for trucks, it was down to the Audi Q5, Audi Q7 TDI, Chevrolet Equinox, Ford Raptor, Ford Transit Connect, Mercedes-Benz GLK and Volvo XC60. Whew - that's a lot of metal to chew on. The semi-finalists are in for the first annual Internet Car and Truck of The Year coronation, and now its time to let you, the genteel habitués of the world wide web, cast your own votes. Us autowriter types, including moi, have winnowed the bewildering field down to a list of seven contenders each for the car and truck categorie.

Voting is already underway at internetcarandtruckoftheyear.com and runs for a month. If you want to show off, there's also a writing contest that auto journos of any ilk can submit entries for. The Internet has finally assembled its own collection of esteemed digital-only auto scribes to anoint vehicles as the Internet Car of the Year and Internet Truck of the Year, while also putting a new twist on traditional awards. Rather than just hold closed-door meetings to draw names from a hat, the public is also invited to weigh in on their choices for Consumer Choice categories at the official website.

There's also a journalism contest that invites online-only writers and bloggers to submit entries for consideration. It's a new age, and the Internet Car and Truck of the Year offers a new venue to recognize the best, from fresh voices. Autoblog is excited to participate in this new venture, surrounded by our esteemed colleagues from other online outlets. The awards will be presented at an as-yet-unannounced auto show in November, and there will be regular updates at InternetCarandTruckoftheYear.com in the meantime.
