The award was handed out at the Engine Expo in Stuttgart, Germany. This is Ford's first outright victory from the panel, which consists of journalists from around the globe.

This is the second year in a row that the Engine of the Year jury has chosen a small-displacement mill for top honors, selecting the 0.9-liter TwinAir two-cylinder engine from Fiat in 2011. Of the emerging trend, Dean Slavnich, editor of Engine Technology International and co-chairman of the International Engine of the Year Awards, says:

"That the small capacity engines continue to impress the most in overall terms, even against the larger, higher performance engines, says a great deal about how the automotive industry has developed in recent years."

General Motors won the award for the Green category with its 1.4-liter range extender as seen in the Chevrolet Volt, but it was BMW earning the most accolades from the panel. The Bavarian automaker won in the 3.0-4.0-liter, the 2.5-3.0-liter, 1.8-2.0-liter and 1.4-1.8-liter categories, sharing the award in the smallest of those with partner PSA.

If your interests veer more to the performance side of the industry, you'll be interested to note that Ferrari has taken the Best Performance Engine laurels for 2012 with its excellent 4.5-liter V8. The full list of winners can be seen in the press release below, and more background can be found on the official website here.
Continue reading Ford, Ferrari and BMW clean up at 2012 International Engine of the Year Awards

Ford, Ferrari and BMW clean up at 2012 International Engine of the Year Awards originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 13 Jun 2012 15:30:00 EST. Italy knows how to put an engine together - at least, according to the International Engine of the Year voting committee. The votes have been tallied, and Fiat has taken home four out of 12 awards. The company's 875-cc TwinAir mill has earned the title of Best New Engine of 2011, Green Engine of the Year, Sub 1.0-liter Engine of the Year and International Engine of the Year. Ferrari helped Italy earn two more awards, with the 458's 4.5-liter V8 unit being crowned Best Engine Above 4.0-liters and Best Performance engine. All told, Italian powerplants claimed half of the awards handed out.

BMW was no slouch, however, with the German automaker acquiring four awards in the competition. Audi and Volkswagen also earned recognition. A great showing, but the Italians earn the win thanks to Fiat taking the top prize. Click past the jump to read the full press release and learn more about the International Engine of the Year awards.
Continue reading Fiat and Ferrari dominate 2011 International Engine of the Year Awards

Fiat and Ferrari dominate 2011 International Engine of the Year Awards originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 18 May 2011 19:01:00 EST. The 2010 International Engine of the Year awards have been announced and ten different engines have been honored in 11 categories, plus an overall winner chosen. The engines were rated by a jury of automotive journalists from around the world and range in size from sub-1.0-liter three cylinders to a 6.2-liter V8 and go from mild to wild. Not all are available in North America yet but at least two more of these engines are expected to arrive here within the next year. Go ahead and view the gallery to check out this year's winners in each category and find out which engine the jury considered the best overall for 2010.
Naturally, any given engine needs to make enough power for its intended application, but fuel efficiency is just as important in modern society. This being the case, it's not terribly surprising that Volkswagen's innovative 1.4-liter Twincharger engine has taken home top honors as the 2009 International Engine of the Year, beating out BMW's powerful 3.0-liter direct-injected twin-turbo six-cylinder powerplant by just four points.

The Engie of the Year award is handed out based on the voting results of 65 motor scribes polled from all around the globe. Some 32 countries are represented in the jury, including the U.S., Germany, Japan, China, the U.K., and Korea.

To go along with its Engine of the Year award, VW's supercharged and turbocharged mill also won the Green Engine of the Year trophy - beating out Honda's 1.3-liter IMA hybrid powertrain in the process - and also took the nod in its 1.0-1.4-liter size class. Here's a list of the rest of the award winners:

Best New Engine - Porsche's 3.8-liter 385bhp flat-six

Best Performance Engine - Mercedes-AMG 6.2-liter V8

The powerplant also beat out other entrants to win in the categories of Best Performance Engine and Best Above 4.0-liters. BMW also received kudos for the Z4 M's 3.2-liter and twin-turbodiesel 3.0-liter, for a total of five awards.

Subie fans will be pleased to know that the Subaru WRX's 2.5-liter turbo garnered the company's first-ever international engine award in the 2- to 2.5-liter category.
