Tragedy struck on the New Jersey Turnpike over the weekend when a truck caused a six-vehicle pile up, killing one and injuring four – among them actor/comedian Tracy Morgan, who was returning from a stand-up comedy show in Delaware.
At least 17 people were injured over the weekend when a driver at Poland's Gran Turismo Polonia event lost control of his Koenigsegg and crashed into the crowd. Video of the accident (scroll down to view, though be warned some scenes are graphic) shows the driver piloting his supercar down a straight stretch of closed-off road in front of spectators at high speed when it veers off to the right, hits a curb and plows into a group of spectators that included children before spinning around 180 deg
As the Formula One championship winds to a close, the series is on track for a big change-up in drivers. But not before one last in-season switch. Earlier this season, Toro Rosso replaced Sebastien Bourdais with Jaime Alguersuai. Ferrari called up Luca Badoer to fill in for an injured Felipe Massa when Michael Schumacher wasn't up to the task, and subsequently replaced Badoer with Giancarlo Fisichella, leaving Force India to promote Tonio Liuzzi to Fisico's seat. We've just received word that racer and Road & Track contributor Paul Frère has been seriously injured in an accident near the Nürburgring. As reported by La Derniere Heure, the 89-year-old Frère was apparently involved in a heavy collision while driving a Honda Civic R. He is in a Frankfurt hospital with seven broken ribs, a shattered pelvis and two punctured lungs. The prognosis appears good, however. It is expected he will return to his home in France in October.
