This year's Geneva Motor Show served as the launch platform for three of the world's latest and greatest supercars. The Italians brought us the Lamborghini Veneno and the Ferrari LaFerrari, while the British unveiled the production version of the McLaren P1.

To put the three in better perspective - as if any of us will ever fully comprehend trio of million dollar coupes - the Aussies at Motoring.com.au built an infographic (click above to enlarge) that outlines what makes each of these cars so spectacular. Using unique colors to represent each of the vehicles, the team put together a variety of charts that focus on vital statistics, pricing, total production run and other parameters all designed to ease the process of digesting an overabundance of exotic goodness. We have uploaded the graphic full size in this link.
Infographic: Comparing the Veneno, LaFerrari and P1 supercars originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 16 Mar 2013 14:59:00 EST.
Infographics are the energy bars of information delivery - not bad for you, lots of tasty calories and just enough to get you by, but not so heavy on the lasting sustenance. Yet because they skip all the boring bits they can make just about any subject interesting, and that's how we've come to know all kinds of interesting things that we'll shortly forget about the humble home garage.

The IFA Insurance Company lays out the stats on the domestic carport, from its origins in the word "garer" and as a place for horses, to being covered for feature stories and magazines and a source of envy for homeowners. Oh, and the US alone has 82 million homes with a garage - enough to store every car made in the world last year, with a few garages left over to fix a few million of those cars.

You'll find more factoids in the full infographic below.
Continue reading Infographic: The history of the garage

Infographic: The history of the garage originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 26 Jan 2013 13:01:00 EST.
Are we allowed to say that this infographic celebrating the 2013 Honda Accord might be - so far - the most interesting thing about the car? Breaking down thirty years and eight generations of Accord production at Honda's Marysville, Ohio plant, it's a detailed chart of how the Accord went from a 75-horsepower sedan that got 28 mpg, took 12.9 seconds to reach 60 mph in 1982 and boasted a digital clock, to a 185-hp (the four-cylinder model) sedan that gets 35 mpg, takes seven seconds to get to 60 mph and boasts the kinds of features you'd also find in a Mercedes-Benz.

The factory numbers are just as interesting, the Marysville plant taking six years to build its first million cars, then taking just two years to add another one million during the third-generation Accord, repeating the feat again twice during the fifth and sixth generations. The latest sedan and coupe carry the hopes of those nine million others that came before it, each generation of which made Car and Driver's 10-Best list. Let the games begin - after you check out the infographic, which you can click on to enlarge.
Infographic: 30 years of American-built Honda Accord originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 01 Nov 2012 07:02:00 EST.
We're going to make this very, very simple for you. No one has any business operating a vehicle under the influence or driving with an open container in the cabin regardless of local law. That said, the good people at Car and Driver have taken the time to work up a quick infographic touching on open container laws in various states (click here to view).

A total of 11 states are either noncompliant with federal guidelines prohibiting open alcoholic beverages in the passenger compartment or don't have a law against open containers on the books. Those states see federal funding directed from construction activities to safety programs as a result.

That's not to say those 11 are easy on those who imbibe and drive. As Car and Driver points out, all 50 states now have ignition-interlock laws for citizens convicted of a DUI. Those laws require a breathalizer to be installed in the offender's personal vehicle. If the driver doesn't blow a perfect zero blood alcohol level, the car won't start.
Drinking And Driving: Open-container laws in the U.S. originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 12 Sep 2012 08:59:00 EST.
The 2013 Ford Fusion hasn't even gone on sale yet and it's made a bunch of connections: an appointment with NASCAR's Sprint Cup, star of its own music video, and a date with Ryan Seacrest. Now Ford has paired it with the Space Shuttle, but not for nothing: the MAR M246 nickel-cobalt-tungsten superalloy used for the turbochargers of the new Fusion is the same compound used in the high-pressure turbo pumps of the Space Shuttle's main engines.

Sure, the Fusion is still in a different league when it comes to certain comparators, like its 237 horsepower versus the Shuttle's 19.5 million. But does claim a few crowns, such as its 190,000 rpm maximum vs. the Shuttle's 28,120 (we're assuming Ford means the speed its turbocharger spins), and the Fusion gets much better gas mileage.

We've found an infographic for those who want to know everything there is to know about the Top Gear Test Track. The visualized data set comes courtesy of Boost Labs, which is a design and technology firm that has a passion for cars embedded deep within its corporate culture. Since Top Gear is the most common talk around the water cooler, the Boost Labs offices turned their formidable design and technology talent to Clarkson and Co.'s private playground.

The main wheel of the infographic breaks down information such as Power Lap times, weather conditions and episode data for every car that's tackled the Test Track going back to 2002. Farther down we have a breakdown of the 10 most affordable cars to be tested and how their performance capabilities stack up, a bit of eduction on the Stig and the track itself, and then an awards presentation for the superlative performers in categories like lightest, fastest, most powerful and easiest on the bank account.

We shouldn't have to wait much longer to officially declare that the Ken Block Gymkhana franchise has gone from viral to pandemic. With more than 134 million views for the four videos in the series, it feeds off itself now and has ejected its spores into fashion, toys and an entity called "Extreme Entertainment."

Block's DC Shoes crew has put together an infographic of the phenomenon, laying out everything from comparative viewership - his 135 million versus the NBA's 21.3 million during the entire 2011 season, for instance, to the meaning of his livery to how many tires it takes to capture five digitized minutes of Gymkhana action. If you've been bit by Gymkhana and you're looking for more hair of the dog, you'll find it all in the infographic.
Ken Block's Gymhkhana: The Infographic originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 07 Jun 2012 08:00:00 EST.
If you've ever had visions of telling your boss exactly where he can put his TPS reports and heading off to reenact your favorite scenes from classic trucking movies like Smokey and the Bandit, Convoy or Over the Top, we have bad news for you: Trucking is prohibitively expensive.

The crew at TheTruckersReport.com worked up an infographic filled with examples of just how pricey it can be to operate an eighteen wheeler. According to the information, only eight percent of all trucks on the road are privately operated. The rest are run by larger trucking companies.

No surprise there. A new cab can cost upwards of $100,000, while a trailer will set you back $50,000. Companies typically pay around $30,000 a year on their truck loans, which actually makes it the third largest expense in operating a big rig. Number one? Diesel fuel. A single truck can suck down 20,500 gallons of fuel in a year, which can add up to over $70,000 depending on location. Driver pay falls second, with operators earning around $0.36 per mile. Maintenance, meanwhile, can cost around $15,000 annually.

James Bond has driven a lot of noteworthy vehiclesover the course of his long, fictitious career in Her Majesty's secret service: Bentleys, Aston Martins, Lotuses, BMWs... and those are just the cars. There've been countless motorcycles, tanks and trucks as well. And in between high-speed chases across dangerous and picturesque terrain, 007 has streaked across the sky in helicopters, jets and hot-air balloons, above it in the space shuttle. Let's not forget that Bond is also a commander in the Royal Navy, so he's also no stranger to speedboats, jet-skis, yachts, warships and submarines.

It's hard to keep track of it all, so with the latest film, Skyfall, coming out in October, we're glad to share this tidy infographic that lays out all the Bond vehicles from every movie, plus some trivia and miscellany for the most die-hard Bond fans and automotive enthusiasts. It's similar to the one we brought you last year, only updated and more comprehensive.
While the top four teams - you know, the ones that will be winning most if not all of the grands prix this year - have kept the same drivers, the same engines, the same sponsors and the same colors as last year, this year's Formula One World Championship has seen plenty of changes on the grid.

Lotus and Caterham have finally solved their naming-rights dispute, and both changed both of their drivers - including former World Champion Kimi Raikkonen coming back to F1. Scuderia Toro Rosso also dumped both its drivers, as did HRT, and Williams axed one Brazilian (Rubens Barrichello) for another (Bruno Senna). Virgin changed its name to Marussia, and Force India sold nearly half the team to Sahara.

Can't keep track of it all? Fortunately, YankeeF1 has provided us with spotter's guide for easy reference, showing each of the teams, its car and its drivers, plus a calendar of the grands prix this season and the color-coded tires. Keep it handy next race Sunday and you might just be able to make sense of it all.
Spotter's Guide makes sense of the 2012 Formula One grid originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 17 Apr 2012 14:33:00 EST.
Nobody packs it in like the Geneva Motor Show. Every spring, the exposition boasts more debuts than we could count on all the fingers on all our hands combined.

It's a mind-boggling venture to cover it all, but with this year's show now behind us, it's time to look back on all there was. And for that reason, CarBuzz.com has put together this nifty infographic that catalogs all the new cars unveiled at the Swiss expo this year and arranges them all by color. This year's predominant colors? Silver and white. Check out the rainbow in all its colorful, expandable glory after the jump.
Continue reading Infographic colorizes the Geneva Motor Show

Infographic colorizes the Geneva Motor Show originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 31 Mar 2012 10:01:00 EST.
There's an awful lot of information to consuder when it comes to Formula 1 racing. It's arguably the most complicated and technologically advanced sport in the world, with an ever-changing rule book, aerospace-level engineering, and the most elite driver talent. It's enough to make any fan's head spin. Fortunately we've got a tidy infographic that lays it all out for you.

Submitted (interestingly enough) by online bingo site Ladbrokes.com, this infographic breaks down everything, including the newest features on the 2012 cars, each team and the equipment they use, the full race calendar, the lap times from the pre-season test sessions, and a smattering of other interesting information. Check it out after the jump.
Continue reading Infographic breaks down the intricacies of Formula 1 in 2012

Infographic breaks down the intricacies of Formula 1 in 2012 originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 24 Mar 2012 19:02:00 EST.
By all accounts, vehicle theft is down to some of the lowest levels in over 25 years. Even so, cars are still getting pilfered every day, and LoJack has gone through the trouble of crafting a detailed infographic displaying some of the more interesting information associated with the 10,251 LoJack-equipped vehicles that were stolen and then recovered last year. The company says that, of all vehicles equipped with the theft recovery system, 92 percent are brought back to their rightful owners. Last year, the most stolen and recovered 2011 model was the ubiquitous 2011 Toyota Camry, while the Honda Accord took the top slot overall.

The oldest model saved from the clutches of thieves in 2011 was a 1948 Chevrolet Fleetline, while the priciest of them all was a 2010 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG worth $116,825. Not too shabby.

Not surprisingly, California led the list of states with the most stolen and recovered vehicles, with Texas, Florida, New York and New Jersey fleshing out the top five. The full, expanded infographic can be seen below.
Continue reading Infographic: LoJack releases 2011 Auto Theft Report

Infographic: LoJack releases 2011 Auto Theft Report originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 15 Mar 2012 16:32:00 EST.
Over the years, Top Gear has had 154 celebrities on its Star in a Reasonably Priced Car segment. They've used three different cars and driven in a variety of weather conditions ranging from dry to wet and even snow. With such variety, you can bet there will be numbers to crunch and statistics to ponder, and as we all know, the best (or at least the most fun) way to do that is with - you guessed it - an infographic.

Fortunately, that's just what our mates over at carbuzz have put together. And in doing so, they've taken all sorts of parameters into account, including what gender, nationality and even profession is best represented in their Stigliness. Click on the image above to view the full graphic.
Continue reading Infographic crunches the numbers of Top Gear's Star in a Reasonably Priced Car

Infographic crunches the numbers of Top Gear's Star in a Reasonably Priced Car originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 01 Mar 2012 19:28:00 EST.
Seventeen days after the Super Bowl and we're still talking about the commercials. Crazy, we know, but that's how significant these ads are, and why the $3.5 million price tag for airtime during the game seems almost justified... almost.

Yesterday we reported that YouTube had crowned Chrysler's "Halftime in America" as the most watched car commercial from the Super Bowl (an M&M's ad nabbed the #1 most viewed overall spot). But YouTube views don't mean much to automakers that are trying to sell cars. They want to know if their multi-million dollar Super Bowl ad directly increased interest in the vehicles they're selling.

To answer that question we have this infographic from car-shopping website CarWoo!. While we wouldn't blame you for guessing that Chrysler and Clint Eastwood drummed up the most car-shopper interest, you'd be wrong. According to the numbers crunched by CarWoo!, Chevrolet received the highest lift in consideration after the big game at 61 percent. Chrysler was second with a 26-percent lift and Toyota third at 25 percent. Brands with big ads like Acura, Volkswagen and Honda, however, saw no lift in interest after the Super Bowl.

Chevrolet's performance here can be partially attributed to the volume of ads it ran before, during and after the Super Bowl. It was by far the most prolific auto advertiser. But not all of its ads were winners. While commercials for the Sonic, Camaro and Silverado contributed positive lift, the ad for the Volt did nothing to help raise the bottom line of consumer interest.

Also interesting to note is the back-of-the-pack performance of Cadillac, which, despite boasting that its ad for the ATS was the most watched advertisement of all time, only saw a six-percent lift in interest.

The Rose Bowl - The Grandaddy Of Them All, as they say - is one of the most storied bowl games in college football, and the pre-game parade is a big part of the pageantry of the event. Last year, Natural Balance broke the record for the world's largest float with an 84,300-pound rolling display, but the pet food company seems thirsty for more world-record glory.

For 2012, Natural Balance is building a 100,000-pound monstrosity that is 116 feet long and contains a 65-foot wave pool built specifically for one Tillman the Dog. Tillman will be surfing the waves on the float, which sounds impressive if you didn't already know that this super dog is also an avid skateboarder.

To tow this massive float, the folks at Natural Balance are counting on power from the tried-and-true Ford 6.8-liter V10. The 362 horsepower mill, which boasts 457 pound-feet of torque, is completely stock. The same can be said for the six-speed automatic transmission, save for a custom gear reduction setup behind the output shaft to get the float moving. The beefy 10-pot was pulled directly from an F-650, but we're guessing the 28-foot long truck won't be getting a 100,000-pound tow rating anytime soon.

Hit the jump to check out the entire infographic for yourself. You'll learn that the float is larger than 2,000 Tillmans, and you'll also catch a glance of the custom rig that will house Ford's big V10.
Continue reading Infographic: Ford 6.8L V10 to tow world's largest float

Infographic: Ford 6.8L V10 to tow world's largest float originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 22 Dec 2011 14:29:00 EST. As a graphic designer for nearly 20 years, Cameron Booth credits his deep and abiding love for transit maps to his dad's obsession with trains. The Australian-born, Portland, Oregon-based artist has adapted the infographic aesthetic of subway maps to America's road networks, creating some beautiful new artwork in the process.

We think Booth's work serves well as both information and art, particularly his brand-new U.S. Routes map, which includes a number of thoughtful touches (e.g. historical roads hidden as thinner route lines "beneath" current main road networks. (For a massive 4000x view so you can zoom in to see your own area, check out Booth's Flickr page).

Booth tells Autoblog that the experience of creating this map has been an enlightening one:

"Applying a transit map template to a road network makes us look at a familiar system in a new way: Instead of the familiarity and detail of a geographically accurate road map, we're instead presented with simplified routes, connections and bright colors. It also could be interpreted as a reflection on America's love affair with cars."

The U.S Routes project was quite a challenge - far more than Booth's previous maps, which includes the less involved but equally striking Interstate Highway graphic. Taking over a year to complete, Booth admits that this is probably his toughest-ever undertaking.

The artist is now taking prepaid orders for U.S. Routes prints in various sizes, but the holidays and a need to get a print run together will mean that those orders probably won't be processed until some time in early January. Check out more detailed shots of U.S. Routes, as well as his work (including some great photography) at his website, www.cambooth.net, and if you're interested in ordering one of his prints, click here.
New art reimagines U.S. road network system as a subway map originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 21 Dec 2011 19:29:00 EST.
Boy, that 2011 was a doozy, no? Earthquakes, tsunamis and floods; Arab Spring uprisings; Occupy protests, or as the highly respected yet entirely fictional Dr. Peter Venkman once said, "Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together... mass hysteria!"

This year has indeed been one to remember for the world at large, and the auto industry was anything but immune to what was happening to the world's populace.

Kelley Blue Book has put together a nifty color-coded infographic to take us back through 2011. It quickly reminds us how much of an upswing the industry as a whole was in for before the devastating earthquakes and tsunamis hit Japan in February. After that, the entire playing field shifted, largely in favor of the already surging U.S. domestic automakers, the Korean brands and Nissan, which had the good fortune of not having nearly as much of its production interrupted as Toyota and Honda.

As 2011 closes, it would seem that the auto industry is once again approaching equilibrium, where all manufacturers are competing on just the merit of their wares, though as this past year has taught us, nature can change that in an instant.

Tanks are a unique form of wheeled transportation. Performance is measured not in terms of speed or quickness, but how much destruction a tank can dish out and absorb in return. Tanks played a huge role in the first and second World Wars, but in our modern age of unmanned drone warfare and undetectable teams of special operators, these iron-sided bears have become to military aficionados what a Duesenberg is to a classic car collector. And thus, owning your own tank may be as attractive a proposition to you as putting an MG in your garage.

This infographic is a good primer for tank ownership, and includes such information as where to buy one, how much you can expect to pay, and the legal requirements you'll need to meet before you can call yourself the proud owner of a weapon of tracked destruction. You'll also be in good company, as the infographic cites a number of other known tank owners, including novelist Tom Clancy, which makes perfect sense when you think about it. Follow the jump to see the infographic from top to bottom.
Continue reading Infographic: The ins and outs of owning a tank

Infographic: The ins and outs of owning a tank originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 05 Nov 2011 20:01:00 EST.
The Highway Loss Data Institute has rolled out its latest figures on vehicle theft, and the crew from CarBuzz have taken the time to compile a list of the 10 models most and least likely to be stolen based on the number of claims per 1,000 vehicles. It should come as no surprise to hear that the Cadillac Escalade once again takes the honor of the most stolen of them all, followed quickly by a bevy of full-size pickup trucks, including the Ford F-250 Crew 4x4 and the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew. In fact, the only two cars to break the top 10 most stolen vehicles are the Chrysler 300 at number six and the Chrysler 300 Hemi at number 10.

Meanwhile, the Audi A6 has managed to rank as the least-stolen vehicle, followed by the Mercury Mariner and the Chevrolet Equinox. Surprisingly enough, the Volkswagen CC, Lexus RX 350 and Mini Cooper Clubman all got a nod as grand theft auto untouchables. Hit the jump for a look at the full infographic.
Continue reading Infographic: Car thievery gets broken down

Infographic: Car thievery gets broken down originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 23 Sep 2011 18:33:00 EST.
