"Being close" matters with horseshoes, hand grenades and misguided arithmetic. In past years, the Infiniti G sedan has been close, but compared to the Kaiser of the Klasse, BMW's 3 Series, the G35 was near the stake, but not a ringer. "Almost as good," we'd all nod, "but its biggest strength is that it's a bargain."

When the G37 arrived, our initial thought was it was simply an amplified G35, a car that's delighted our socks off in the past. But same car, bigger engine isn't the whole of the story. Just as gourmet chefs tinker with recipes, Infiniti has made adjustments. Embracing the spirit of Kaizen, Infiniti refuses to leave well enough alone, and the G37XS doesn't need to trade as heavily on its value proposition anymore. The G line has always driven well, but there's always been compromise, too. Cheap interiors, choppy ride - a history of "not quite." Has the G improved to the point of full greatness? And what happens when you add all-wheel drive to the mix? We hit the road to find out.
Who says Twitter is good for nothing? Making fun of derivative Chinese car designs (cough Geely cough) is like shooting fish in a barrel. Only the barrel has no water in it, is only six-inches deep and you're using a shotgun. Still, we're thinking this Jianghuai sedan might be taking a cake or two. Obviously, the front end is a bit much. And looking at the car in profile, the Jianghuai isn't just influenced by the Infiniti G35 -- it is the G35. Stare harder at that C-pillar if you don't believe us. But why completely rip off one car when you can jack two? Make the jump to check out the this Jianghuai's pilfered rear.

BMW, eat your art out - Infiniti can do art cars too! At the 14th Annual Canadian Art Gallery Hop Gala in Toronto, Infiniti of Canada unveiled their G37 Anniversary Art Project Vehicle. It's a Infiniti G37 Sport Coupe that has been painted by Montreal artist Heidi Taillefer. The car was decorated to celebrate Infiniti's 20th anniversary, but the Japanese automaker worked with Cirque du Soleil on the project.

So, how does the artistic Canadian entertainment company fit into the picture? Cirque du Soleil is also celebrating an important anniversary, their 25th, and the paintwork adorning the car (which took over 300 hours to complete) was inspired by the offbeat circus. The car is also going to appear at select Cirque events in Canada in the future, and the ultimate plan is to auction the car off for charity.

Follow the jump and you can see a video of Taillefer performing her magic during the month-long project she calls "Ligozzi." Look for the Anniversary Infiniti at future Cirque du Soleil shows. If you can't make it, you can check out the high-res gallery below - and don't forget to click through to the video and to read the full press release from Infiniti Canada.
While carving out a new niche can sometimes mean that you can coerce buyers from all segments of the market (Chrysler's PT Cruiser was a good example of this when it launched, as was the Mini Cooper), we openly questioned whether that will be the case with the Blue Oval's big new sedan:

"The Taurus name has never been extended upmarket like this before (let alone in such a waterlogged economy), and it isn't immediately clear who the model's competitors are - a detail that could prove problematic when trying to target customers."

Judging by their new comparison test which pits the SHO against a Journey-spec Infiniti G37 sedan, the folks over at Inside Line share our quandary. After all, given that the rear-drive Infiniti is significantly smaller and lighter, driven by half-as-many wheels (and seemingly from a different end of the market), this seems like a questionable matchup. And yet, there really aren't many cars that are better comparisons - the Chrysler 300C AWD, perhaps, or the front-drive Chevrolet Impala SS, but both are older propositions that are massively outclassed by the spanking new Ford. We might have suggested the Acura TL, but Inside Line already tested that car in a comparison and found it wanting.

Given that the Blue Oval itself appears to be targeting upmarket brands with some of its benchmarks, perhaps the G isn't an unreasonable choice, especially given that its as-tested price ended up being cheaper than the Ford. In any case, the SHO vs. G37 comparison makes for interesting reading, so check it out by clicking on the link below.

[Source: Inside Line; Image: Kurt Niebuhr]
Bigs n' Littles: Inside Line pits Ford's new Taurus SHO against Infiniti G37 originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 07 Jul 2009 13:30:00 EST.
As enthusiasts, many of us are quick to dismiss convertibles as the preferred conveyance for hapless poseurs (BMW M3 cabrio) or fake-bake hairdressers (Toyota Solara). And with good reason. When you lop the top off a coupe, the result is often a floppy, overweight chassis that provides all the dynamic delights of a rubber nine-iron and a granite golf ball. Such executions fail to please on almost every level, and that's before you start dealing with complex roof mechanisms, awkwardly styled rumps and abysmal trunk space.

As a whole, convertibles aren't for everyone, but they do fill a need and a niche. And they sell. Almost half of all two-door BMW 3 series models are purchased with a retractable roof, and it's a segment that Infiniti hasn't played in for years (anyone remember the M30 convertible?). As Nissan's luxury arm continues to push into the European market, it's back in the game with the 2009 Infiniti G37 Convertible. But who is it for? Someone who's simultaneously sultry yet demure; assertive yet relaxed; commanding yet delicate. Someone compelling. Someone like Moneypenny.

Gallery: First Drive: 2009 Infiniti G37 Convertible

Photos Copyright (C)2009 Damon Lavrinc / Weblogs, Inc.
Continue reading First Drive: 2009 Infiniti G37 Convertible, MI6's sultry secretary has a new ride

First Drive: 2009 Infiniti G37 Convertible, MI6's sultry secretary has a new ride originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 10 Apr 2009 12:00:00 EST.
Take a quick glance at Infiniti's line-up in the United States. What's the most glaring omission? A range-topping luxury sedan or possibly a version of the GT-R to serve as it's sporting halo? Not according to John Capps, chairman of the Infiniti National Dealer Advisory Board, who says Infiniti dealers are pushing hard for another entry into the same near luxury segment where the G37 already competes along with another luxury crossover model. It seems that the EX, the automaker's latest CUV, is not selling up to expectations against rivals such as the Lexus RX-series due to its limited utility.

Up next for the automaker, though, are replacements for the M-series sedan and QX full-size SUV, which we surmise may come from a new platform since it's currently based on the Nissan Titan, which is slated to be replaced by a version of the Dodge Ram in a few years. On the green front, Infiniti is also said to have a hybrid on the way for 2010, though we're short on details as to which platform(s) will be so equipped.

Gallery: Review: 2008 Infiniti EX35

[Source: Automotive News - sub. req'd]
Infiniti developing new crossover, hybrid for 2010 originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 26 Jan 2009 17:59:00 EST.

We still have to wait a few more weeks for the official unveiling of the Infiniti G37 Convertible at the Los Angeles Auto Show. But in the meantime, Infiniti has announced a Premier Bloomingdale's-only version which will be limited to just 200 copies. Sharing the same mechanicals as the regular production version (3.7-liter V6 rated at 328 hp), the Bloomingdale's model will be differentiated by its dark Platinum Graphite paint over Monaco Red leather upholstery. Special 19-inch wheels and a new grille complete the exterior package, while inside a touchscreen nav and Bose Open Air sound system will come standard on the LE. The Bloomingdale's Premiere model goes on sale November 10th, but pricing has yet to be disclosed.

A second teaser shot for the upcoming Infiniti G37 Convertible has found its way onto the web, and the timing couldn't be better considering the debut of the Lexus IS250C today at the 2008 Paris Motor Show. Both cars will be setting their sites on the BMW 335i convertible, and the G37 'vert will be packing a 328-horsepower 3.7L V6 in its holster when the time comes. Other features include a three-piece folding hardtopIts and a seven-speed automatic transmission, as well as a completely redesigned rear end to accommodate the new roof. The G37 Convertible's official debut isn't until the LA Auto Show in November, at which time we'll get to fully see how the G37 Coupe translates into a convertible. Until then, check out the teasers in our gallery below.

Gallery: 2009 Infiniti G37 Convertible

[Source: Motor Authority]
Second teaser of Infiniti G37 Convertible found originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 02 Oct 2008 15:30:00 EST. Infiniti is one of them and will be showing off a few new models on the greens of Pebble Beach, one of which is this, the G37S. What you see is not much different than the G35 on sale now, save for a few exterior tweaks including new wheels. What is different is that Infiniti's G sedan will get the same mechanical hardware found in the G37 Coupe. That means the superlative VQ-series 3.7L V6 producing 328 horsepower will be standard equipment, which necessitates the change in nomenclature for the 2009 model year from G35 to G37. Transmissions will include a 6-speed manual or Infiniti's new 7-speed automatic, and the brand is also offering a new optional brake package that adds 4-piston front/2-piston rear brakes and larger rotors. Those wheels are the new 18-inch wheel design with standard Scratch Shield self-healing paint. Infiniti will show more this weekend than just the G37S, including the G37 convertible and G37x, and we already have bloggers in place on the back nine to report it all.

Gallery: Infiniti G37S at Pebble Beach

[Source: Supercars.net]
Infiniti G37S spotted prior to Pebble Beach originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 13 Aug 2008 11:55:00 EST.
Nissan has finally confirmed in writing what many of us had known all along... the 2009 model year will bring the new G37 Sedan, G37 Convertible, and the G37x Coupe to Infiniti showrooms. The G35 sedan gets a bump from 3.5-liters (306 hp) to 3.7-liters (328 hp) as it now shares its engine with the coupe. Rebadged the G37, an optional brake package adds 4-piston front/2-piston rear brakes and larger rotors to the sedan. A new 18-inch wheel design and standard Scratch Shield paint (self-healing) round out the upgrades. The all-new G37 convertible marks Infiniti's first drop-top since the 1992 M30 was discontinued, and the first open-air G. Based on the G37 Coupe, it features a three-piece automatic retracting hardtop. Finally, the new G37x is a G37 coupe fitted with Nissan's ATESSA E-TSÔ all-wheel drive system. While the G37 Sedan and G37x will go on sale in September and debut in less than two weeks at the 2008 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, we'll have to wait until the LA Auto Show in November for the debut of the G37 Convertible. Of course, Autoblog will be at both events to cover it for you.

Their WRX sway bars have proven to be some of the strongest and lightest on the market (not to mention three-way adjustable), and they've constantly been ahead of the curve by offering new products for vehicles soon after they appear on the market. Unfortunately, they're not as good about keeping their website up-to-date or being able to rattle off the diameter of their sway bars when inquiring minds, well... inquire.

Regardless, by the end of 2007 Hotchkis will begin offering sway bars for the E92 BMW 335i and they've got prototype bars for the Infiniti G37, due to be on sale in the beginning of 2008. They're already offering Stage One kits (springs and sway bars) for the Volkswagen GLI and the new Scion xB, and have begun to sell sway bars for both the Mazdaspeed3 and Audi RS4.
SEMA 2007 Spotlight: Making it stick like snot with Hotchkis originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 02 Nov 2007 16:28:00 EST. Thus, it's no surprise that news of convertibles has also begun to populate Autoblog. Earlier today we told you about speculation that Nissan's working on a drop-top Altima Coupe, and now we bring you a rendering found in a Japanese auto mag of an Infiniti G37 hardtop convertible. Now, we have no reason to believe Infiniti is actually developing a G37 vert besides the fact that it seems like a gimme. We imagine Infiniti is at least considering the this option for the G37 if for no other reason than the BMW 3-Series Coupe can be had with a folding hard top, and we all know the 3-Series sits squarely in the G35/G37's sights. For what it's worth, the rendering looks positively gorgeous, as if the car was designed with a convertible in mind from the get-go.

[Source: VWVortex via Jalopnik]
Rendered Speculation: Infiniti G37 hardtop convertible originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 29 May 2007 12:28:00 EST. It turns out Infiniti wasn't exaggerating about how powerful the G37's new 3.7L VQ37VHR with infinitely variable valve timing is, and the new engine blows away the previous 3.5L motor in every way.

According to Automobile's dyno graphs, the new 3.7L produces 287 hp and 236 ft-lbs. of torque at the rear wheels, which means friction in the drivetrain accounts for about a 13% loss in power from the flywheel. The previous 3.5L VQ V6 used in the 2007 G35 coupe produces 236 hp and 218 ft-lbs. of torque at the wheels. This means that although the new engine is only 5.6 percent larger in displacement, it produces almost 22 percent more power than the engine it replaces. Automobile does note that it can't be sure if such a large increase in power is due to the new engine or reduced friction in the drivetrain, but suspects that since the drivetrains of the 2007 and 2008 model are similar that the gains are mostly from the motor.

You can check out all the dyno graphs from Automobile by clicking on the Read link and videos of the new Infiniti G37 being dyno tested after the jump.

[Source: Automobile]
Continue reading Dyno-tastic! The exhibit in Tokyo features examples from each generation of the Skyline, and the opening event was attended by luminaries including Oscar nominee Ken Watanabe. A series of television commercials featuring well-known personalities like Seattle Mariners outfielder Ichiro is also being aired in Japan to coincide with the 50th Anniversary and the Coupe's launch. As for the Skyline Coupe, what's there to say? It's got all the goodness of the G37, just with Nissan badges -- and a name that carries some serious cachet in Japan.

[Source: Nissan]

Gallery: 2007 Nissan Skyline Coupe (JDM)

Gallery: 12 Generations of Skyline

In Japan, the G37 gets its Skyline on as birthday bash commences originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 27 Apr 2007 17:51:00 EST. What's the new G37's coefficient of drag? 0.29. How big is its fuel tank? 20.0 gallons. How much does it weigh? Well, that depends on the model, of which there are three: the base G37, G37 Journey and G37 Sport 6MT. Like other Infinitis, there will also be three option packages from which to choose: the Premium Package (upgraded Bose stereo, Bluetooth connectivity, heated seats and mirrors, etc.), the Sport Package (19-inch wheels, Viscous Limited-Slip Differential, stiffer suspension, sport brakes, sport seats and an appropriate body kit) and the Navigation Package (touch-screen navigation, 9.3-gigabyte hard drive). There's too much to list here, so you can peruse the press release and a shot of the entire specs list after the jump. The gallery has also been updated with high-res, desktop wallpaper-sized versions of the new pics.

[Source: Infiniti]

Gallery: 2007 Infiniti G37 Coupe

Continue reading Infiniti releases new pics and complete specs on G37

Infiniti releases new pics and complete specs on G37 originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 26 Mar 2007 17:28:00 EST.
With the New York Auto Show only a couple weeks away, the embargos had to begin to break any day now. Road and Track started things off by releasing its May issue online early with a single of the new Infiniti G37 and a short driving impression. Edmunds Inside Line and Automobile smelled blood, and immediately opened the flood gates revealing everything they knew about Infiniti's new G Coupe. These news outlets were apparently invited to a sneak preview of the G37 at Nissan's test facility in Arizona last month, and while Infiniti likely set strict embargoes on publishing pictures and driving impressions of the new model, all it takes is one hole in the dam to start a deluge.

The full view of the G37 is stunning, with familiar cues from the G35 Sedan mingled with coupe-specific cues like a large front intake and fast profile. The headlights peel back into the front fenders giving the G37 an even more imposing presence than the current G35 coupe.

The already excellent 3.5L V6 from the G35 Sedan gets bored out by 4.6mm to reach 3.7 liters, and the compression is increased to 11.0:1 to create some outstanding power numbers. An estimated 330 hp and 270 lb-ft will move the 3,682 lb coupe, and the drive should be much improved with 36-percent stiffer underpinnings than the G35 coupe. Stopping power is also quite impressive, with 14-inch front and 13.8-inch rear rotors.

Infiniti showed the world it was no pushover in the entry luxury market with its first-generation G35 coupe, and we think the great looks and impressive power numbers of the all-new G37 may put Infinity at the front of the pack. Of course, the BMW 335i coupe leads the pack at the moment while weighing less and putting up bigger torque numbers with its twin-turbo inline-six, so we'll reserve judgment on whether or not the G37 wins by a nose until we've had the chance to drive it.

On a follow up visit, the forum member learned that a possible 330-hp variant of the G37 is also currently being tested at sea level. Finally, the owner said that the new G37 will be in dealerships this summer around July or August.

The real nugget of speculation that interests us, however, is the possibility that Infiniti will produce an all-wheel drive, twin-turbocharged version of the G37 in 2010 that will produce 500 horsepower. Such a car sounds a lot like the Nissan GT-R, the first production Skyline ever to be sold in the U.S. Even though this news come from a forum post written by a guy who talked to some dealer, and its validity can in no way be confirmed at this time, we have to admit that it makes sense to us.

We're well aware that Infiniti dealers were not happy when one Carlos Ghosn announced the GT-R would be badged a Nissan, so an ultra high-performance version of the G37 is one relatively easy way to appease those dealers. We also presume that the G37 Coupe and GT-R will share a good deal of hardware, which makes us wonder if the GT-R's powerplant will turn out to be a twin-turbo version of the G37's 3.7L VQ V6, rather than the 3.5L version. That would certainly explain the blistering lap times a prototype was turning at Laguna Seca last month.

Oh yeah, the dealer is expecting a G37 convertible in 2009. You may now exit the rumormill.

Enter the rumormill: 500HP Infiniti G37 twin-turbo on tap for 2010 originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 13 Mar 2007 14:57:00 EST. Set to be unveiled next month at the NY International Auto Show, the car now has a name attached to it: G37. This was confirmed in an email that went out earlier today from the show organizers. We also have a new teaser shot of the car, as you can see here. No reason's been given yet for the updated nomenclature, but we'll guess that a bumped-up 3.7L version of the VQ powerplant will reside under the coupe's hood. While the teaser shows just the headlight, the 2006 Infiniti Coupe Concept gives you a real good idea of what to expect in the looks department.

The other Infiniti debut at NY is called the EX Concept, which is said to showcase new technology that the automaker will implement on production cars for the first time ever by the end of 2007. We'll be in the Big Apple to bring you all the news as it happens.

[Source: NYIAS]
Next Infiniti G Coupe officially named G37 originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 13 Mar 2007 11:26:00 EST.
