Hyundai has opened the curtains on the i30 wagon it will be bringing to the Geneva Motor Show, and it's a slightly less svelte five-door version of i30 hatch that debuted in Frankfurt. With its hump providing appreciably more space behind the B-pillar, Hyundai says the i30 wagon has best-in-class cargo room at 528 liters (18.6 cubic feet).

It appears to fall right in the competitive sweet spot Hyundai says it's gunning for. At 4,485 millimeters the i30 wagon is 50 millimeters longer than the Volkswagen Golf Estate and 35 millimeters shorter than the seven-seat Ford Grand C-Max. The Golf Estate advertises cargo capacity of 505 liters with the rear seats up, and the best the Grand C-Max can muster is 475 liters if you opt for the tire-repair kit instead of the mini spare. The i30 splits the cargo room of the VW and the Ford with the rear seats down, but beats the five-seat C-Max.

The i30 wagon will offer three direct-injection gas engines and three diesels when it goes on sale later this year. Exact specs haven't been divulged, but outputs will range from 93 to 132 horsepower. A press release with more details is available after the jump.
Continue reading Hyundai previews new i30 wagon for Geneva

Hyundai previews new i30 wagon for Geneva originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 24 Feb 2012 09:29:00 EST.
Based on the can't-make-enough status of the Hyundai Elantra, the public hasn't gotten tired of Hyundai's "fluidic sculpture" design theme. Based on this commercial for the Hyundai i30, we admit that we haven't either. The five-door sold in Europe and based on the Kia Cee'd platform shows us what we can generally expect from the upcoming Elantra Touring replacement.

The last Elantra wagon didn't get big play here three years ago, but neither the Elantra nor Hyundai were in the position they're in now. In Europe, the i30 five-door will get a choice of four engines and three transmissions, but we shouldn't expect to be so spoiled for choice. Follow the jump to see the video.
Continue reading Hyundai i30 commercial previews upcoming Elantra five-door

Hyundai i30 commercial previews upcoming Elantra five-door originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 04 Feb 2012 08:33:00 EST.
There's plenty to love about the Hyundai Veloster. Elegance might not be one of those things, but depending on your perspective, its unique door arrangement surely is. It's got one door on the driver's side, two on the passenger and a big liftgate around back. But now it looks set to get one more door, as a new report from Car and Driver suggests a second aperture is planned for the left side, bringing the total door count up to a more conventional five.

The second driver's side door is reportedly being installed for markets like the UK, where the driver sits on the <strike>wrong</strike> other side (a similar problem to what Mini found with the Clubman). But that addition could be destined for the US market as well. For our part we'll echo C/D's sentiment that we'd sooner have a turbocharged Veloster in Hyundai showrooms than a five-door version, but we'll take what we can get. For now.

The Veloster with the extra door wouldn't be the only new five-door planned for Hyundai's lineup, as an Elantra Touring based on the new European-market i30 sportwagon/hatchback is widely expected to make the transatlantic voyage as well. Apparently the Korean automaker thinks there's enough room in its range for both.
Hyundai mulling five-door Veloster for U.S. originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 11 Oct 2011 11:33:00 EST.
Someone at the Frankfurt Motor Show caught Volkswagen Group CEO Martin Winterkorn investigating a Hyundai i30 <strike>as if he was</strike> just like one would expect from an intrigued engineer at a rival company. It might be too much to infer that the Herr Doctor is impressed by what he finds, but there is no doubt that he's got some questions that will need answering when he leaves.

At about 1:45, while sitting in the cabin, he adjusts the steering wheel and begins to query his seconds on what he discovers. As far as our native German speaking helper could tell, Winterkorn wants to know how Hyundai managed to make an adjustment mechanism that doesn't make any noise, going so far as to say, "How do they do it? BMW can't do it, we can't do it... no clanging!" And then one of the gentlemen appears to answer, "We had a solution but it was too expensive..."

Follow the jump for the video and our best attempt to transcribe what Winterkorn says. Feel free to fill in the blanks in the comments, and we believe this officially means everyone is watching Hyundai. Closely.
Continue reading What can Hyundai do silently and inexpensively that Volkswagen and BMW can't?

What can Hyundai do silently and inexpensively that Volkswagen and BMW can't? originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 26 Sep 2011 19:29:00 EST.
On this side of the ocean, we're used to our Hyundais having names like Accent and Elantra. But overseas the Korean automaker has an entirely separate range with names like i20 and i30. And Hyundai is preparing to unveil the latest of the latter at the rapidly approaching Frankfurt Motor Show.

Filling the slot in Hyundai's European line-up that's filled, more or less, by the Elantra in this side of the pond, the current i30 hatchback and wagon have been on the market since 2007, so their replacement is just about right on schedule. The new model has been developed from start to finish specifically for the European market at the company's European R&D facility in Rüsselsheim, Germany, and embraces the brand's fluid design language with its trademark hexagonal grille up front.

Little in the way of solid details have been announced on the new model to accompany the teaser rendering above, but you can expect it to pack a range of gasoline- and diesel-burning four-cylinder engines when it eventually reaches European showrooms. Also, could this hatchback i30 preview what's in store for North America's upcoming Elantra Touring? Hyundai's home office in Korea has dropped the first frontal image of a new concept that will be shown next week at the Geneva Motor Show along with some technical details. The i-Flow is a D-segment sedan meant to go up against cars like the Ford Mondeo in Europe. Under the hood, the i-Flow has Hyundai's first diesel hybrid powertrain including a new 1.7-liter inline-four. The diesel has dual stage turbocharging and is paired up with Hyundai's Blue-drive system using a new six-speed dual clutch gearbox. Like the upcoming Sonata hybrid, the i-Flow uses a lithium polymer battery pack. With its drag coefficient of 0.25, the i-Flow is claimed to achieve 78.4 miles per gallon (U.S.) and CO2 emissions of just 85 grams/kilometer.

Joining the i-Flow onstage will be a refreshed version of the i30 (badged as the Elantra Touring in North America) and low emissions "blue" versions of the i10, i20, i30 and ix35 (Tucson). These models receive automatic start-stop, low rolling resistance tires and aero tweaks. The four cars all achieve CO2 ratings under 100 g/km while the crossover ix35 gets 135 g/km. Finally, Hyundai will also show a fuel cell version of the new ix35/Tucson for the first time. Hyundai still plans to produce fuel cell vehicles in the thousands annually by 2012.
When we hear "i30", we think first-generation entry-level luxury sedan from Infiniti, but the name as it applies to Hyundai's new small car is supposed to invoke the hipness of the iPod, iMac and iPotatoPeeler. Unfortunately, adding an i to your product's name will not make it sell like an iPod, but at least the Hyundai i30 has some safe if not pleasing lines to partake. It does share a passing resemblence to the newish Kia cee'd, which isn't suprising since the cars are based on the same platform and will offer the same engine lineup that includes 1.4L, 1.6L and 2.0L gas engines and a 1.6L and 2.0L CRDi diesel engine. What do you think, should we be start complaining now that we won't get the i30 over here or is the Elantra good enough? Yeah, we don't think it is, either.

[Source: Carscoop]

Geneva Sneak Peek: Hyundai i30 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 22 Feb 2007 15:33:00 EST.
