When the Volkswagen Phaeton launched here in the States, nobody liked it. Well, that's not true. Every journalist we know who drove the mighty VW went on and on about how it's probably actually the greatest car in the world (especially all decked out with a W12 engine) and how the HVAC system is a full generation ahead of the competition (you can't beat in-car radiators!) and how the seats so awesomely massaged their fat butts. That said, it was still a terrible car in terms of branding, marketing, etc. And now we have no Phaeton.

Then came the Hyundai Genesis. The big sedan version with the Tau (whatever that means) 4.6-liter V8. "Hmmm," our motor-mouthed brethren chimed. "Hyundai might just be on to something here." Lots of good ink got spilled in the Genesis's general direction and the Mercedes-Benz lookalike Korean luxury car got picked as the 2009 North American Car of the Year. It even appears to be selling. How things change.

Well guess what? Kia wants in. AboutCAR caught a glimpse of the proposed Kia K9 at a design conference in Seoul. Standing next to the proposed super sedan is Peter Schreyer, best known for designing the original Audi TT, he is now Kia's chief of design. Should the K9 show up, expect it to arrive in the U.S. with a Genesis-sourced chassis and a big fat V8. Other parts of the world will get other engines. Will it work? As Hyundai America CEO and President John Krafcik told us at the LA Auto Show when he was asked which he liked better, the new Sonata or Tucson, "I just really love my Genesis." And there you have it.

Even with two completely redesigned models debuting in the coming weeks, Hyundai won't leave its carryover models alone for the 2010 model year. Engineers have tweaked the 4.6-liter V8 in the Genesis sedan and extracted an extra ten horsepower from the Tau to bring peak output up to 385 hp at 6,500 rpm.

Hyundai Technical Center powertrain director John Juriga acknowledged that the performance stats will remain the same, but drivers will be able to feel the increased grunt. The revisions not only increase output, but also improve the refinement and driveability of the V8 to feel more responsive at the low end of the tach.

To achieve its goals, Hyundai added a two-step variable induction system that varies the flow through the intake manifold at low and high rpm, along with continuously variable valve timing on both intake and exhaust, larger valves, and a chromium nitride coating on the pistons to reduce friction. The updated Genesis sedans will be arriving in dealerships later this year.

Allow us to set the stage. The year was 2009, the month was February. The U.S. economy, which for months had been showing signs of springing a leak, was now fully flooding into five forward compartments. Banks were dead or dying, the housing industry had ground to a halt and without massive influxes of cold, hard government cash, two thirds of the Big Three would have gone belly up.

Enter Hyundai. Amidst all the chaos and turmoil, the Korean automaker airs (during the Superbowl, mind you) a very simple commercial stating the following: "Now finance or lease any new Hyundai, and if you lose your income in the next year, you can return it free with no impact on your credit." This program, what Hyundai calls its Assurance Program, was just one of the many factors that led the editors of Advertising Age to name the resurgent Korean automaker's ad men as their Marketer of the Year - an award that isn't just confined to the automotive sector.

Aside from just appealing to "broken dreams," (i.e. bad credit, job loss) Hyundai also pushed the then new luxury Genesis Sedan to people with "intact dreams." Moreover, while the Superbowl tends to skew male, Hyundai made sure to scoop up all of bankrupt General Motors' ad spots during the Oscars, an event that skews heavily female. Long story short, Hyundai's market share is up during the first ten months of 2009 from 3.1% to 4.3% and in September, when the rest of the industry experienced a 22% sales drop, Hyundai's sales went up 27%. Tip of the hat to Vumiko!

2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T R-Spec - Click above for high-res image gallery

If someone hadn't reread the Hyundai press release, we might have totally missed seeing the Genesis Coupe 2.0T R-Spec. Compared to the RM460 and other tuned Coupes in the booth, the R-Spec just didn't sparkle enough for us to pursue it. And perhaps that's the point.

The 2.0T R-Spec launches a tuner-friendly line of Hyundai automobiles that have all of the best performance bits without some of the frills that add weight and expense. We saw the car previewed at the Chicago Auto Show back in February, but fittingly, this was the official debut here at tuner-friendly SEMA.

With a base price of $23,750 the R-Spec is basically a 2.0T Track model with a few options deleted. It still has the track-tuned suspension, 19-inch gunmetal-finish alloy wheels with performance summer tires, Brembo brakes and Torsen limited-slip differential, but it also gets front strut camber adjustment bolts to sharpen initial turn-in and overall responsiveness. The best thing about the R-Spec is the fact that it's showing up in dealerships across the country as we speak.

UPDATE: Hyundai has informed us that the R-Spec is 68 pounds lighter than the 2.0T Track model of the Genesis Coupe.
It's arrived. Finally. The wickedly awesome Rhys Millen Racing mid-engine V8 version the Hyundai Genesis Coupe is here, and it took every fiber of our being not to hop in and drive it off the SEMA show floor.

The RM460 is why we're in Sin City -- it's the embodiment of the originality and DIY-ethic of the aftermarket extravaganza in Vegas. Its Genesis sedan-sourced, 4.6-liter, Tau V8 occupies the spot normally reserved for a backseat in lesser Coupes, and is boosted via a handful of go-fast parts to produce an even 500 HP. The stock transmission was tossed in favor of a Mendeola five-speed sequential gearbox, KW coilovers were used in place of the stock dampers, and HRE 560 Series 20-inch wheels wrapped in Toyo T1R tires nicely frame the new StopTech braking system. Given Millen's reputation for performance we don't doubt this is one seriously fast vehicle.

It's also a looker. As a matter of fact, we're starting to think it might be in the hunt for best-looking car at the show. The body kit is tasteful and looks OEM. The gorgeous custom RM ONYX HD paint job by BASF is a perfect contrast to the carbon fiber used on the roof, air intake blades, diffuser and other trim. While the press release mentions the Ferrari 599XX as inspiration, we're seeing a bit more Nismo 370Z in the overall design. Not that there's anything wrong with that. The interior wasn't overlooked either, with new Sparco sports seats, alcantara and carbon fiber trim panels coddling passengers as they listen to the new Infinity sound system. We can't wait to see how it runs -- and we intend to find out. There's a more detailed rundown after the jump and a great gallery of pics below.

John Hennessey is no stranger to extracting power from already quick cars and giving them a unique appearance. More recently, Hennessey has launched a Tuner School to teach others his craft and help keep the SEMA show floor populated with fresh creations.

The 14-week program teaches students about engine building, turbo/supercharging and testing, and for next week's SEMA show in Las Vegas, Hennessey had his students participate in the creation of a matte black Genesis Coupe wrapped in what appears to be carbon fiber.

However, the really good stuff is under the skin where Hennessey and his team of youngins boosted the Genesis' stock motor to 500 hp and 465 lb.-ft. of torque thanks to a single 66mm turbo, fuel system with higher flow injectors and a host of other upgrades. The car is claimed to accelerate to 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds and passed the quarter mile traps in 12.5 seconds. Expect more info from the show floor next week, but in the meantime, make the jump for the official details.

Over the years, thousands of cars with custom paint jobs have littered the floor at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show in Las Vegas. But almost all of them arrive already painted and ready to show. At next week's SEMA Show in Las Vegas, however, Street Concepts will be showing off a special Hyundai Genesis Sedan that will arrive at the show with a clean pearl white finish. Over the course of the show, which lasts practically all week, Detroit artist Courtney Mason will apply a new graphic design to the car using special paint pens to create a unique look.

Aside from the paint, the rest of the theme is black chrome with 22-inch wheels and assorted trim pieces getting said finish. Did we mention the carbon fiber roof panels, a big ol' set of Brembo brakes, and the Magnaflow exhaust system? Check out the complete press release after the jump.

2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T R-Spec

Back when Hyundai launched its Genesis Coupe last spring, the Korean maker announced that it would be adding another variant targeted specifically at the tuner crowd. As this is being written, the 2.0T R-Spec is being shipped to dealers and will have its official coming out next week in Las Vegas at the SEMA show.

The R-Spec cuts what are billed as "non-essential" convenience bits like cruise control, Bluetooth, the trip computer and steering wheel audio controls to cut both weight and cost. Since the R-Spec is targeted at customers that are likely to add some sort of body kit anyway, no rear wing is installed, either.

On the other hand, it includes all of the good bits from the track pack like the 19pinch wheels, Brembo brakes and Torsen limited slip differential. R-Spec models are available only in white, red and black with the 2.0-liter 210 turbo four banger. It goes out the door at a relatively modest $23,750, leaving both racers and Hot Import Nights guys and gals with a bit of cash to spend on the inevitable upgrades. Check out the official press release after the jump for further details.

Update: Hyundai spokesman Miles Johnson dropped us a note to let us know that the R-Spec weighs in at 68 pounds less than the 2.0T Track model and a hefty $3,000 less than the same.

It's been less than a year since the Hyundai Genesis Coupe hit the streets, but the Korean automaker isn't sitting on its hands. Just as it's done in the past, Hyundai is launching a steady stream of refreshed and redesigned models, and even new models - like the Genesis - are benefiting from the updates. At the top of Hyundai's list of early cycle improvements is fitting the Genesis Coupe with a satellite navigation system, something that's been missing since it's launch earlier this year. So after getting an exclusive glimpse of a prototype system in May, Hyundai invited us back to sample the production version in a few Coupes and one Sedan. How's it work? We hit the road to find out.

Last week we first learned about the RM460, the mid-engine V8-powered Hyundai Genesis Coupe that is currently under construction at the shop of Rhys Millen Racing. Millen just a sent us a couple more photos of the progress being made on the car as the crew gets ready for its debut at this year's SEMA show in Las Vegas. The photo above shows the first and possibly only Genesis coupe with a rear hatch. Along the sides the vents to release hot air from the engine compartment are clearly visible.

The other shot we received shows the rear sub-frame carrying the engine block and transaxle. The sub-frame was removed to finish up the welding in spots that were inaccessible while it was installed in the body. By the time you read this, the completed engine should be installed back in the car so that the fabrication of the rear bulkhead can be completed. By the time it's completed, this should be one hell of a ride.

2009 Targa Trophy Los Angeles - Click above for high-res image gallery

Honestly, our team - Team Korean War Machine - had low (to no) hopes going into the Los Angeles leg of the 2009 Targa Trophy. Sixty cars were entered and even though our Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8 was packing 306 horsepower, most of the other cars were in the 500-horse range - *gulp.* But first, a little history before we begin.

The Targa Trophy rally started in 2007 with about 70 cars running from San Diego to Palm Springs and back. The idea, according to founder and principle Jason Overell, was to create a "One day format that offered all of the event amenities of other rallies [Bullrun, Gumball 3000], but with more of a focus on real driving scenarios that would test the cars capability, the drivers skill and really utilize the [presence] of a navigator."

The rally expanded to two events in 2008 and we would be participating in the final leg of what they're calling the Southern California Triple Crown - the last of three 2009 rallies. Not only would there be seven winners from the day's event, but three overall 2009 Targa Trophy Triple Crown winners would be, well, crowned.

All any of us on Team Korean War Machine knew is that Fiesta Agent and former Jalopniker Andy Didorosi had arranged for myself, Nada Guides' Road Test Editor Jeff Glucker, and all around car freak Tim "Mad Science" Odell to run the Genesis Coupe alongside his feisty green Ford Fiesta (a special case exception to the usual "hand-selected" entries that are allowed to participate "based on their level of sports car credibility" - a Smart Car also joined in on the fun) in the Los Angeles portion of the three-part event. As a team, we had no planning, no strategy and really no conception of what was going to be happening on this hot, Southern California Saturday. Worse, none of us had spiky hair gel and/or flat-brimmed ball caps. And our morning really wasn't going very well.

AMG showed up at the Roosevelt Hotel to let the Targa Trophy runners play with their latest big V8 toys. And while I enjoyed my ten minutes in the new, faster-than-words E63 AMG very much, Odell enjoyed himself a little too much in the C63, getting pulled over on Hollywood and Highland. After a little explaining, the officers took pity on poor Tim and wrote out a ticket with a figure considerably less than what the radar registered. It wasn't a lose your license offense, just a lose your savings and the respect of your wife infraction. Meanwhile, I managed to back the Hyundai up into the only other press vehicle in attendance - a Porsche 997 S Cabriolet - scratching the hell out of the Genesis' paint in the process. Glucker, not content to just rest in peace, spilled coffee all over his pants. And the rally wasn't even set to start for another twenty minutes...

A year ago at the annual SEMA show in Las Vegas, Rhys Millen Racing made a splash with it's Hyundai Genesis coupe concept, and this year the team's back with an even more extreme example. Last year's car retained the front engine, rear drive layout of the production car and its turbocharged 2.0-liter four cylinder. This time around, Millen's crew is going with the 4.6-liter Tau V8 from the coupe's big brother sedan.

Rather than trying to pack the oversize powerplant into the coupe's smaller engine compartment, the RMR staff have discarded the pretty much useless rear seat and most of the floorpan. The engine and five-speed sequential gearbox will now occupy the space behind the two remaining front buckets. Most of the suspension is being retained and the trunk-lid and rear glass will be combined into a hatch for engine access. For the most part, the Tau V8 will remain close to stock with the limited mods raising output to around 450 horsepower. No word yet on whether this will be strictly a one-off or whether it will be offered to paying customers... feel free to join the line at the rear.

Despite claiming great success with its 2009 Genesis sedan, Hyundai doesn't appear to be resting on its laurels. For 2010, there are no cosmetic changes in store, but the entry-level luxury sedan is getting a gentle fettling in the suspension and steering departments along with some additional kit.

Unfortunately, Hyundai's press release wasn't terribly forthcoming about what changes had been effected upon steering and suspension systems, so we checked in with company spokesman Dan Bedore to learn a few more:

"We're Hyundai, and we'll always seeking continuous improvement. We've made a series of small chassis changes, with a particular focus on improving steering and handling. We've made small adjustments to the steering, increasing efforts and tweaking feel around center; reduced friction in some suspension components; increased V6 rear spring rates; and added more jounce and rebound control to our shocks."

On the creature comforts front (this is a luxury sedan after all), the 2010 Genesis gains available intelligent cruise control and an electronic parking brake on Technology Package equipped models - the latter including an automatic hill holder feature. Additionally, "Ultra-premium leather seating surfaces" will come as standard fit on 3.8 Genesis models with Premium, Premium Navigation, and Technology Package equipped models. Finally, in response to consumer demand, Hyundai says it has made an updated touch-screen navigation (with three-month trial subscriptions to XM radio and XM NavTraffic) standard equipment on 4.6-liter models as well as Genesis 3.8 models fitted with the premium navi pack. You can check out the complete press release after the jump.

The metric-meisters over at J.D. Power and Associates have announced that they have added yet another automotive study to their arsenal. This time out, JDP has launched its inaugural Vehicle Launch Index, which seeks to measure how new vehicles perform within their first eight months on the market.

J.D. Power says that its VLI integrates such factors as "turn rate, vehicle revenue, dealer gross profit, incentive spend, credit quality and residual value." In addition, the study also makes use of automaker provided figures on model mix, incentive spend, supply levels, as well as utilizing some of the company's other survey results to add vehicle quality and design elements into the results.

So... which model is tops in meeting this balancing act? The 2009 Hyundai Genesis with a score of 689 (out of 1,000 possible points), beating out Ford's F-150 (673) and Volkswagen's Tiguan (663). For reference, the study ranks the industry's average score as 582. At the other end of the spectrum, vehicles like the Toyota Matrix, Dodge Ram, Pontiac Vibe, and Dodge Journey all scored poorly. Check out the full results in the press release after the jump.

Gallery: Review: 2009 Hyundai Genesis

Photos copyright (C)2009 Michael Harley/ Weblogs, Inc.

[Source: J.D.
Rhys Millen's Hyundai Genesis Coupe at Pikes Peak - Click above for high-res image gallery

Rhys Millen continued his pursuit of the family business this week as he began his 18th attack on the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. As one of the most challenging hill climbs in the world at 12.4 miles and 156 turns, in some ways it's as close to running the Nürburgring Nordschleife as you're likely to get in America.

This is the first time Millen is making the run in his new Hyundai Genesis Coupe, and he's evidently driving the same car he has been using in Formula D drift events all year long - complete with the Hyundai V6 powerplant. In fact, the car was trucked to Colorado directly from last weekend's drift event in Las Vegas.

Millen took advantage of a practice session on the course three weeks ago to get a time this week that was 1.5 seconds per mile faster than he managed last year in a Pontiac Solstice that had three years of development. Speaking after Thursday's practice runs, Millen had this to say:

"Yesterday was the first day of practice in the middle section, approx. 3.0 miles. We ran faster than last years section time by 5 seconds ! Today was even better. Today we ran the upper section to the finish line and I'm still shocked to say this but we ran 27 seconds faster than last years section time. The car is working amazing, so predictable, so fast that I am driving like never before."

Hyundai spokesman Dan Bedore sent us a few pics to share, so check them out in our gallery below.

Gallery: Rhys Millen Hyundai Genesis Coupe at Pikes Peak 2009

[Source: Hyundai]
Rhys Millen attacks Pikes Peak in Hyundai Genesis Coupe originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 17 Jul 2009 09:59:00 EST.
Porsche grabs the top spot for the fifth year in a row in the J.D. Power and Associates 2009 Automotive Performance, Execution, and Layout (APEAL) Study. For this year's study, the team at JDPA gathered information from more than 80,900 purchasers and lessees of new 2009 model-year cars and questioned them on more than 90 vehicle attributes. Their studies examined "how gratifying a new vehicle is to own and drive," based on those evaluations.

While the APEAL nameplate ranking is significant (Porsche, Jaguar, and Cadillac round out the top-three), the segment winners offer more insight into what today's buyers are seeking. This year, it appears to be the newly launched models including the Volkswagen CC, Nissan Maxima, Dodge Challenger, and Ford Flex... each took top honors in their respective category. This year's biggest upset comes in the "Midsize Premium Car" segment as the all-new Hyundai Genesis (sedan) knocks the BMW 5 Series from the podium. The Amanti's tough luck story could change in a big hurry, however, if a new story from Motor Trend is true. MT is reporting that the Amanti is will be going rear-wheel drive as soon as late 2011 on a smaller version of the Hyundai Genesis Sedan platform.

Since Kia is more value-oriented as a brand than Hyundai, most expect the new Amanti to be a few thousand dollars cheaper than the Genesis Sedan. The current Amanti has a lofty starting price of $26,045, but boatloads of incentives are needed to move them off dealer lots.

Motor Trend speculates that the 375-hp Tau V8 engine probably won't make its way under the hood of the next Amanti, with the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and the 3.8-liter V6 being the more likely powertrains. We're thinking that a range of four- and six-cylinder engines would be sufficient, especially when considering tough new fuel economy laws scheduled for 2011 and beyond.

We do have one question, however. With such a radical rethink apparently in store and not having a great deal of brand equity tied up in the Amanti brand, wouldn't Kia be better off finding a new name? They haven't seemed too reluctant to change model names in recent years when bringing out new models, so perhaps they'll consider a change in designations.

Either way, with its hip and stylish Soul, the surprisingly competent Optima, along with the pretty new Forte and Koup models, Kia's lineup has gotten a radical overhaul for the better. If the next-gen Amanti is anywhere near as good as Hyundai's Genesis Sedan, the competition should keep a very close eye on boys from South Korea.

[Source: Motor Trend]
Rumormill: Kia Amanti making switch to Genesis RWD platform? originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 10 Jul 2009 14:28:00 EST.
We can only imagine how exciting a day it would be to bring home a brand spanking new Chevrolet Corvette Z06. Genesis Owners forum member zedbuyers was feeling that love as he and his wife left a Massachusetts Chevy dealer with a spanking new Cyber Gray Metallic Z06. Zedbuyers was driving from the dealer in the rain with his wife following behind in the couples' nine-month-old Genesis Sedan when disaster struck.

As traffic slowed from 60 mph to 30 mph in the exit lane, zedbuyers applied the brakes, but his wife evidently didn't. The Genesis slammed into the hours-old Z06, thrusting the $80,000 supercar into the vehicle in front of it. Oddly, the Genesis took the brunt of the blow, and a local Hyundai dealer estimated the damage at $16,000, including nearly $2,000 for the HID headlamps alone. The Z06 damage was $10,000, including $2,000 for a carbon fiber bumper.

Luckily, nobody was seriously injured in the accident, but we're sure the owner is smarting none the less. We're guessing the insurance company is not going to react kindly to a combined $26,000 in damages only hours after the purchase of what is likely a very expensive vehicle to insure in the first place. Peruse the gallery below to check out the carnage, and click on the link below for zedbuyers' damage estimates.

Gallery: Genesis crashes into Corvette Z06

[Source: Genesis Owners via Jalopnik]
Double Oops: Wife plows into husband's new Chevy Corvette Z06... in her Hyundai Genesis originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 02 Jul 2009 13:29:00 EST.
Ford's been building up to April 17, 2009 for several months now. In these dark days for the auto industry, there isn't a lot worth celebrating so it's understandable that the 45th anniversary of the introduction of the Mustang is drawing some attention. Over the past 45 years, numerous contenders have rolled up to the lights for a chance to try and snatch the crown from the original pony-car, but only the Mustang has remained standing throughout. The latest intender to the throne comes from Hyundai in the form of the Genesis Coupe. As with so many species in the animal kingdom, the battle for the alpha position is preceded by an elaborate dance. Check out the Genesis coupe's birthday tribute the current leader after the jump.
Continue reading VIDEO: Hyundai pays tribute to 45 years of the Mustang

VIDEO: Hyundai pays tribute to 45 years of the Mustang originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 17 Apr 2009 00:01:00 EST.
The Red Bull-sponsored Hyundai Genesis Coupe driven by Rhys Millen made its competitive debut at the Formula Drift event in Long Beach, CA this weekend. While Millen was knocked out in the first round, his car was still one of the hottest attractions at the event, garnering plenty of attention from race fans. Its turbocharged V6 made one of the best sounds on the track, and it's possibly one of the best looking cars on the circuit as well. This is just one of many venues where Rhys will be competing with the Genesis Coupe, along with the Pikes Peak Hill Climb, the Redline Time Attack series, and the rest of the Formula Drift calendar. We caught up with the Millen and the car in the pits to take a closer look and were sure to get plenty of photos both on and off track. Be sure to check out the high-res gallery below, and follow the jump to learn more about the RMR Hyundai Genesis Coupe.

Gallery: Rhys Millen Racing Hyundai Genesis Coupe

Photos copyright (C)2009 Drew Phillips / Weblogs, Inc
Continue reading Red Bull Racer: A closer look at Rhys Millen's Hyundai Genesis Coupe

Red Bull Racer: A closer look at Rhys Millen's Hyundai Genesis Coupe originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 12 Apr 2009 19:02:00 EST.
