Last week, French automaker PSA-Peugeot-Citroen announced the development of the world's first hybrid diesel powertrain. Called HYbrid4, the propulsion system is earmarked for initial implementation on the Peugeot 3008 crossover. But after that, its sister-company Citroen will use the system in an all-new vehicle: the DS5.
PSA has one of its largest manufacturing plants in the NW of Spain, near the city of Vigo. Since Spain is one of the countries that insists it will put a million EV and/or plug-in hybrids on roads by 2014 and is also Europe's 5th largest market, automakers are already introducing plug-in projects - projects that might be able to get €800 million from Spanish taxpayers for their development. The frugal 1.6-liter diesel Peugeot 308 (and the very frugal diesel hybrid version) get some of their low numbers to Michelin's new low-rolling resistance tires, called Energy Saver.
