The most interesting part of this news, though, is that the vehicle on display will sport a diesel/electric hybrid drivetrain, which could be the first and only such system sold in the U.S. The standard diesel Appalachian truck is expected to come with a 2.2-liter four cylinder diesel engine putting out between 140 and 150 horsepower along with 300 lb. ft of torque. Expected to sell in the low $20,000 range and be available in both two and four-door versions, Mahindra could potentially re-ignite the small truck market <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/05/13/the-ranger-is-nearly-dead-long-live-the-ranger/">abandoned</a> long ago by American automakers. With the hybrid option coming in at around $5 grand more, before any available tax credits are applied, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/02/11/mahindra-appalachian-diesel-pickup-arrives-in-us-next-year-dies/">we think</a> that this upcoming Indian truck will make some waves here in the states when it goes on sale in 2010.<br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://dieselforecast.com/ArticleDetails.php?articleID=472">Diesel Forecast</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/03/25/mahindra-to-show-diesel-hybrid-pickup-at-sae-congress/">Mahindra to show diesel-hybrid pickup at SAE Congress</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Tue, 25 Mar 2008 07:02:00 EST. Toyota and Nissan pioneered the idea of modern compact pickup trucks in the U.S. market, but Toyota has largely left it behind over the past decade. The new A-BAT concept pickup is 27 inches shorter than an extended cab Tacoma and nine inches shorter than the regular cab model. In profile, the uni-body truck looks somewhat like a shorter Honda Ridgeline with rounder contours. The A-BAT is the first Toyota to have a mid-gate allowing cargo longer than the standard four-foot bed to extend into the cab. With the tailgate down, drivers can pack the proverbial 4x8 sheet of plywood. Power for the A-BAT comes from Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive mated to a four-cylinder engine, although so far there is no indication of which wheels get propulsion. Based on the snub-nosed styling, it seems probable that the engine is transversely mounted and driving the front wheels, but we'll find out for sure when the A-BAT officially debuts at the 2008 North American International Auto Show in Detroit next month.<br /><br />[Source: Toyota]<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/detroit-2008-toyota-a-bat-concept/low/">Detroit 2008: Toyota A-BAT Concept</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/detroit-2008-toyota-a-bat-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/01/55_abat_concept-1a_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/detroit-2008-toyota-a-bat-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/01/39_abat_concepta_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/detroit-2008-toyota-a-bat-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/01/58_abat_concept_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/detroit-2008-toyota-a-bat-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/01/59_abat_concept_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/detroit-2008-toyota-a-bat-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/01/60_abat_concept_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/12/27/detroit-08-preview-toyota-a-bat-concept-hybrid-pickup/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Detroit '08 Preview: Toyota A-BAT hybrid pickup concept</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/12/27/detroit-08-preview-toyota-a-bat-concept-hybrid-pickup/">Detroit '08 Preview: Toyota A-BAT hybrid pickup concept</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 27 Dec 2007 18:18:00 EST. There's an electric car for <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/07/29/done-deal-lotus-will-build-the-tesla-roadster-in-hethel/">speed junkies.</a> There's even a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/11/29/2008-saturn-vue-green-line-hybrid-will-be-true-2-mode-hybrid/">hybrid</a> for hauling more than two people. The Prius not orange enough for ya? You're <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/12/26/obvio-lotus-to-create-multifuel-microsports-cars/">covered too</a>.<br /><br />But until now, if you wanted to haul cargo, your choices were limited, if not nonexistent. Phoenix Motorcars hopes to fill that need soon with its uncreatively-named Sport Utility Truck. The midsize pickup will use not one drop of gasoline while hauling your oversized sheets of plywood or mounds of mulch. The four-door cab will even let you take five of your closest home-improvement-able friends to the megastore, while the 480-lb-ft of torque takes the vehicle to 60 mph in a claimed 10 seconds and on up to 95 mph.<br /><br />Phoenix says the SUT's battery pack will recharge 95% in 10 minutes with the off board charger and in six hours with the on board charger. The company says its NanoSafe battery packs will get 100 miles on a charge, and are guaranteed for 12 years. It just received a $750,000 order for 10 of the 35KWh packs from <a href="http://file:///Volumes/UNTITLED/Autoblog/December%202006/phoenix/batteries%20delivered.html">Altair Nanotechnologies</a>. That order will help the company meet its goal of selling 500 of the California-built pickups in late 2007 in that state, and 6,000 nationwide by 2008.<br /><br />Autoblog Green reported on the company from SEMA and has all the technical details on <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2006/12/09/alt-car-expo-qanda-with-roy-graham-on-altairnano-batteries-phoen/">their site</a>.<br /><br />More photos after the jump.<br /><br />[Sources: <a href="http://www.techeblog.com/index.php/tech-gadget/the-perfect-electric-car">TechEBlog</a> and <a href="http://file:///Volumes/UNTITLED/Autoblog/December%202006/phoenix/batteries%20delivered.html">The Auto Channel</a>]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/01/01/electric-truck-hauls-amps/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Electric truck hauls amps</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/01/01/electric-truck-hauls-amps/">Electric truck hauls amps</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Mon, 01 Jan 2007 07:55:00 EST.
