When Queen Elizabeth II celebrates her Diamond Jubilee, it will be a cause for celebration for her entire United Kingdom. But the Brits aren't the only ones marking Her Majesty's 60 years on the throne.

The celebrations will apparently include delegations from around the world, including one mixed party of prancing horses old and new to represent Italy. Not only will several Ferraris be represented at the first Concours d'Elegance to be held at Windsor Castle, but Ferrari is bringing the 4th Mounted Carabinieri to strut their stuff on the grounds of the palatial estate for Her Majesty's enjoyment.

The event will form part of the Diamond Jubilee Pageant from May 10 to 13, but you can see a preview of what Ferrari and the Mounted Carabineri it supports have in store after the jump. The fancy dress makes the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (which you'd otherwise be more likely to see in the other Windsor, where Sergio Marchionne - chief executive of Ferrari's parent company - went to college) look sober by comparison, but it's worth watching for the overly dramatic music alone.
Continue reading Ferrari corrals the Prancing Horses for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee [w/video]

Ferrari corrals the Prancing Horses for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 11 May 2012 09:19:00 EST.
According to the Detroit Free Press, the ubiquitous neon-orange triangles seen on everything from wide loads to cement mixers are apparently too high-tech for Amish horse-drawn buggies. First, the objectors say the orange is way too bright and clashes with their buggies' blacked-out color scheme. Second, the Amish say the three-sided shape can represent the Holy Trinity and shouldn't be used for something as worldly as a cheap, plastic warning device.

One Amish man recently spent 13 days in a county jail after refusing to pay a fine for not having the triangle on his buggy. The American Civil Liberties Union has stepped in to defend the man in Kentucky Supreme Court on religious grounds. The Amish hope the court will vacate the charges and open up a dialogue into less-offensive alternatives to the offending placards.
Some Amish upset over buggy safety triangles originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 21 Mar 2012 18:31:00 EST.
You might figure that horse riding enthusiasts would be diametrically opposed to SUV drivers, but you'd be wrong. At least in the case of Zara Phillips. The British equestrian competitor has been a Land Rover brand ambassador for several years now, and was lucky enough to <strike>snub Victoria Bekham</strike> take delivery of the very first Range Rover Evoque this weekend.

The first model to roll off the production line, Philips' Evoque is a five-door in Stornaway Grey with a 2.2-liter diesel and six-speed automatic. The model's delivery took place at the Burghley Horse Trials, which is sponsored by Land Rover and where officials made use of a fleet of more than 60 vehicles from the legendary off-road marque.

That's horse power for you. And with 20,000 orders on the books, this is just the beginning. Follow the jump to watch footage of the delivery and for the official press release.
Continue reading Land Rover delivers first Evoque to a horseback rider [w/video]

Land Rover delivers first Evoque to a horseback rider [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 06 Sep 2011 16:28:00 EST.
After thousands of years serving as the transportation of choice, the horse was unceremoniously replaced by the automobile. The fact is, cars don't need food, water or shelter, and thanks to the automobile, a trip that used to take three days can now happen over the course of a couple hours. So the car wins, for ever and ever, right? Tell that to the driver of a massive tanker truck that slid off the road during what looks like a terrific snow storm.

Hit the jump to watch what could be an Amish man and his pack of powerful Clydesdales pull a shining example of modern machinery out of the ditch. If you click through quickly we'll refrain from boring you with a plethora of lame "horsepower" puns or quips about 16-leg-drive beating all-wheel-drive any day of the week. Don't make us count to three. Still here? Fine: turns out all the horse power you really need can be counted on just one hand.

When the internal combustion engine finally helped the automobile pass the horse-drawn carriage as the chosen method of transportation for a majority of citizens in the United States, that a step in the right direction. Right? Moving forward about a hundred years... when the behemoth Sport Utility Vehicle that never actually seems to venture off the beaten path passed the minivan in the hearts and minds of families across the country as the people-mover of choice, was that a step in the right direction?

If you answered no to either of the above questions, perhaps you'll enjoy the video pasted after the break. Created by artist Jeremy Dean (read about our initial post on the project here), the converted Hummer H2 is called Futurama and is pulled by two white horses named, appropriately enough, Duke and Diesel. Hummers are for horses? See for yourself.
