Honda S2000, Acura RSX recalled over brake boosters

Honda has announced a recall that affects two of our favorite, dearly departed cars from the brand's portfolio: the S2000 roadster and Acura RSX coupe. A total of 5,239 S2000 models from the 2006 and 2007 model years are affected by this problem, as are 13,113 2006 Acura RSX models.

"A production error may have allowed brake booster components to be produced outside of the original specifications, potentially causing decreased brake assistance over time, which could increase the risk of a crash," American Honda said in a press release. Thus, dealerships will inspect and, if necessary, replace the brake booster setups in these vehicles, free of charge.

No crashes or injuries have been reported in relation to this brake problem. Honda says the problem was discovered during warranty claim analysis.

The recall will officially kick of in July, and owners will be notified by mail of this problem. Scroll down to read Honda's official statement.

Scion FR-S pitted against oldtimers RX-8 and S2000

There are very few vehicles available today that compare directly with the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ twins. A case could be made for the Mazda MX-5 Miata, and possibly even six-cylinder versions of American coupes like the Ford Mustang. Pretty much everything else is either too expensive or is powered by the wrong set of wheels.

The boys from EverydayDriver on YouTube decided the only fair way to judge the inherent qualities of the Toyobaru twins was to pit them against two standard-bearers of years past: The Honda S2000 and Mazda RX-8. Neither of these cars is an exact matchup, with the Honda boasting a convertible top and the RX-8 offering more practicality via a rear seat and two reverse-opening doors for easier access. What they do offer, however, are similar performance stats and proven reputations for excellent handling.

None of this talk answers the real question, though: Which one wins the comparison test? Scroll down to watch the video, and be prepared for something of a surprise conclusion.

Rumormill: Honda to update S2000 and Beat in one fell swoop

There was a time in the not too distant past when Honda had a slew of fun-to-drive tuner specials ranging from tiny JDM Beat kei-car to the razor-sharp S2000. Both of those vehicles are dead and gone now, but a report from Motor Trend posits that Honda could be working on a way to replace both vehicles in one tidy (and presumably, fun-to-drive) little package.

The rumored roadster, which reportedly wouldn't be production-ready until 2014, would utilize a subframe with a mid-engine layout for optimum weight distribution. If this exciting-sounding ride is indeed in utero, the big question would surround the avenue Honda would choose for propulsion. Options include a small, possibly boosted gasoline motor, a CR-Z-like hybrid and possibly even an electric-only solution. All three options would likely be relatively efficient due to the roadster's small stature, but MT points out that a gas-only option could limit the vehicle's international appeal.

A mixture between a Beat and an S2000 sounds great to us, but is there any proof that such a vehicle is under development? The magazine did some digging and discovered a Honda patent pending in Japan for a subframe vehicle with an "engine being fitted to a center frame." Add to that the fact that last year we heard rumblings of a next-generation Beat that looks a lot like the rendering above, and we could finally be looking at a fun new Honda by mid-decade. Honda has resurrected The Impossible Dream once more. Hands down one of our favorite car spots of all time, the original ad aired in the UK way back in 2005 and featured a smattering of models from the Japanese company's past. From lowly scooters and the lovable S800 to the company's early racing bikes and F1 cars, the ad was a highlight reel of all of which the company has to be proud.

Things have changed quite a bit for Honda in five years. It's walked away from its F1 efforts, abandoned the S2000 to the sands of time and brought the brunt of its focus to odd-looking people movers. You won't find any of that in The Impossible Dream II, though. Instead, Honda has removed any reference to Formula One and clipped the old hot-air balloon at the end in favor of products like the new Honda Jet, CR-Z hybrid and the FCX Clarity hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle. Even Asimo the robot makes a cameo and the ending features a hot tub powered by a Honda generator.

Watching the spot, which is about 30 seconds longer than the original and concludes with a new line from NPR superstar Garrison Keillor, we can't help but hope Honda will find a way to return to its former place as an automotive innovator capable of producing excellent pieces of engineering with a focus on driver involvement. Honda S2000 gets bizarre custom European widebody conversion

This European Honda S2000 roadster has been subjected to a rather controversial-looking widebody conversion that replaces the Japanese design's crisp lines with an amalgam of shapes and ideas. The front end receives headlamps that may or may not have been borrowed from a Mercedes-Benz SLK and the car's entire aesthetic has been radically altered - even the closer-to-stock rear end has a bigger bumper and spoiler.

It isn't clear if this is a one-off job or if it's a kit that we haven't seen before, but our part, we'll stick with Honda's design, thank you very much. However, should you live in Belgium and feel differently, it's up for sale online for 25,000 euros, or about $36k in American greenbacks. The party continues in the gallery below.

Late yesterday, we showed you the handiwork of 3D rendering guru Lars Martensson (a.k.a. 'GRID'), who had applied his skills to a future vision of a new Subaru WRX STI. Today, we bring you the skilled Swede's take on what a next-generation Honda S2000 roadster might look like.

While this concept has no basis in reality (and rumors of an S200 successor have thus far amounted to nothing), as with the Subie, we find a lot of merit in what we see. Click on the gallery below to see if you don't agree.

Rendered Speculation: Honda S2000 successor rumored to get hybrid power, AWD

Honda is in the sea change business lately, reasserting itself in the hybrid sphere with the Insight and forthcoming CR-Z, and giving Acura the ZDX and perhaps a sleek new coupe to play with. The latest Honda rumor originating from the homeland is that the company could be working on a car that will replace the S2000 more in spirit than in configuration.

The purported coupe is said to be a 2+2 and more powerful than the CR-Z, with all four wheels driven through a variant of Honda's SH-AWD system. It might also be a hybrid. Rumors of an S2000 successor in some guise - even as a front-wheel drive Acura - have been around for a couple of years now, and they probably won't stop until we actually get one. But you'll never hear us complain about Honda's entry into powerful little hybrid all-wheel drive sports cars - as long as it doesn't look like the bastardized rendering of a Mitsubishi Eclipse you see pictured.

Fans of Honda's four-wheeled sport-bike, the S2000, will want to snap one up soon, as Honda has announced that the S2000's ten-year production run will end at the close of the 2009 model year. The high-revving roadster has always had more in common with the company's high performance motorcycles, thanks to it's 9,000 rpm redline and minimal low-end torque. The S2000's abilities to tackle the twisties and assault the track have made it one of the go-to choices for enthusiasts, and with plenty of aftermarket support, it became a prime platform for tuners.

US sales of the S2000 dipped to a mere 72 units in December bringing the 12-month total to 2,538, down from 4,302 the year before. Over its ten-year run Honda has sold 110,000 S2000s world wide with about 65,000 of those here in the US.

Honda reportedly kills S2000 replacement, V8 program, RWD Acuras

Honda's attempt to right-size its development schedule and cope with the economic downturn apparently extends beyond the cancellation of the next NSX. According to Autocar, HoMoCo is right-sizing its plans for the next two years, and that includes rethinking the development of a range of rear-wheel-drive Acuras, a new V8, a convertible based on the CR-Z and the S2000's successor.

Acura seems to be carrying the weight of the bad news, with its RWD 7-series rival, originally due out in 2015, cancelled indefinitely, along with development of a V8 engine that would allow the brand to compete with the best and brightest from Germany. The Euro-market Legend could also be on the block and there's a chance that Honda will stop developing two separate Accord models for sale in the U.S. and abroad, instead opting for one mid-size sedan to be sold worldwide.

Unfortunately, the development cease-fire also extends to Honda's smaller offerings. Honda planned to release a drop-top version of its CR-Z after the hybrid goes on sale next year, but that model has been nixed. Even more disturbingly, 2009 will be the last year of production for the S2000, with no heir apparent waiting in the wings.

We're hoping to get more details on the cut-backs as the week progresses, but needless to say, there's more than enough disappointment to go around.

Rumored and Rendered Speculation: Honda S3000

Honda's S2000 may not be the newest thing on the market, but that doesn't mean it'll be easy to improve upon. The balance is sublime, the driving environment is nearly perfect, and it really comes alive after 6,000 rpm. Fashion probably drives the automotive landscape more than technical superiority, so Honda's been working on a replacement for its S2000. While the Open Study Model that broke cover in London is officially a design study, conjecture holds that it may portend the direction of Honda design language, even though Honda insists that the OSM is not the successor to the S2000.

Road and Track has whipped up a rendering that doesn't look any better than the current S2000's purity of line, but seems a credible stab at how an S3000 may appear. There's a bit too much Acura TL in the lines for our tastes, and the thought of a V6 from the same car thrumming under the coupe's hood doesn't set our enthusiast hearts a-beating. Much of the fun in an S2000 is keeping the high-output four cylinder on boil. A wealth of low-end torque would drastically change the car's character, likely not for the better. Since it's all conjecture anyway, we'll also throw out the chatter about possible hybrid powertrain for this model, too. While reality will answer all of this speculation eventually, we're just going to have to spend the ensuing days getting as much seat time as we can in the S2000.

Rendered Speculation: 2010 Honda S2000 replacement

The Honda S2000 has been on the US market since 1999, and although it's long in the tooth, the rev-happy two-seater still brings joy to drivers with its well-balanced RWD goodness. We're looking forward to an all-new S2000, and according to a few Japanese magazines, we can expect to see the S2K's replacement in 2010. One mag commissioned the above rendering, which incorporates clean, angular lines, similar to those found on recent concepts from Honda and Acura. The topless rendering also exhibits an improved rendition of the aesthetically questionable Honda grille, along with some US-centric chrome rims.

The next generation S2000 is rumored to be powered by a choice of four- or six-cylinder engines, with the four still packing 2.4 liters, but producing around 250 hp, and the a larger 3.5-liter unit putting out around 350 ponies. While a modestly enhanced 2.4 makes sense as the base engine, we're unsure if a larger, heavier V6 is a good call for a vehicle that prides itself on its 50/50 weight distribution and 8,300 rpm redline. Adding a turbocharger would help to keep weight issues at bay, while still providing the added pop enthusiasts crave.

Vin Diesel damages S2000 on set of F&F4

While filming the latest installment of everyone's favorite overly dramatized street racing flick, Vin Diesel extended his rage from a character in the movie onto the right front bumper of an S2000. The Honda, owned by Ben from Bespoke Ventures and being used as an automotive extra in The Fast and Furious 4, sustained a fair amount of damage to the bumper, right fender and headlamp. There's no word on when Universal is going to be settling its tab for the damages done by Mr. D, but Ben has already got a "Vin Diesel Broke My Car" t-shirt for sale, which should ease the financial burden. That, along with the "Don't tune your GT-R" tee, should complete your summer fashion collection.

Japanese/American hybrid: S2000 + LS1 = OMG!

Honda's S2000 roadster has legions of fans who are very happy with its balanced mix of performance and handling. Then there are those who just can't be satisfied.

One of those power-hungry S2000 owners is known as hboy7777 in both S2000 forums and LS1 forums, and he's combining both those worlds between the frame rails of a Honda.

That's good-old American General Motors LS1 iron hunkering down in that Japanese engine bay, with what hboy estimates could be much as 500 hp before the nitrous is added. In a car that weighs only 2,800 pounds, that's gonna be one handful of a Honda.

The project is still in the works, but hboy plans to start with a Nissan t56 transmission, and if it won't hold, maybe try one donated from a Viper. That should do it. You might think weight balance would be ruined by an engine swap like this, but the owner says the aluminum LS1 doesn't weigh much more than the original powerplant and some firewall mods help keep the roadster's handing neutral.

We look forward to seeing what this Japanese/American hybrid can do, and plan to check in on hboy's adventures often. You can too, either at the LS1 Tech, or at S2K International.

Lutz lets a bit of Edmunds survey slip, GM takes 13 first place picks

Sometimes news is just too good to keep to yourself. Just ask GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz. With his company supposedly claiming 13 spots on Edmund's Consumers' Most Wanted list, Lutz just had to brag a bit on the corporate blog before the winners were made public.

And he should brag. Most other car of the year awards are chosen by us automotive writers who usually prefer horsepower over hip room. As the name implies, Edmund's CMW awards are chosen by the car-buying public. And despite not voting with their wallets, the car-buying public who visits Edmund's really like their GMs.

The GMC Acadia got Most Significant vehicle of the year, beating out Honda's Fit, the Toyota Camry Hybrid, the Ford Edge and the Toyota Tundra.

New York Preview: Honda debuting S2000 Club Racer prototype

Honda has issued a short but very sweet press release this afternoon (check it after the jump) informing us that a "club-racer-inspired" version of the S2000 will debut at the 2007 New York Auto Show in a few weeks. Referred to as "aggressively-tuned", the CR-spec S2000 will be an available trim level on the S2000 beginning this fall. This all begs the question, how long is the S2000 for this corporeal world? Rumors still abound a replacement is being readied by Honda that may deviate sharply from the S2000's steadfast formula of being a high-strung, two-seat sports convertible. Unfortunately Honda didn't release an image, teaser pic or even rendering of the S2000 CR-spec, so just imagine this garden variety 2007 model as "aggressively-tuned".

Honda S2000 successor being discussed, may seat four

The Honda S2000 is one of those incredible cars that has been around for a while and which we never hesitate to recommend when somebody mentions the need for a fun ride. But the car never really appealed to a broad enough audience for Honda to work on a successor, at least officially. Winding Road is reporting that a successor is indeed being discussed, but that the plan is to bring the car into a slightly different market segment.

Although the car wouldn't reach dealerships until 2009 at the earliest, word has it the replacement would move up market a bit to compete with cars like the Mercedes SLK. We remember when the S2000 originally debuted and people wondered whether or not the car should be badged an Acura because of the high price compared to other Hondas. Will this again be the case?

WR's source says the car is yet to be approved but a few things are certain about any possible future S replacement. It should stay rear drive. It will be less raw and more refined than the S2000. And the car will look completely different, perhaps adding a back seat in the process. This already seems like heresy and we hope that Honda comes to its senses and offers another pure sports car. We know we're not alone in loving the S2000 and what it represents as a halo vehicle.

Autocross RR of the Week results

Last week's autocross-themed RR of the Week was another close race (I'll take that pun, thank you); with a scant five votes separating first and second place.

It came down to two front-engine, four-pot, drop tops: the Mazda Miata, a cone-slayer if there ever was one, and the Honda S2000, with revs so high it's a wonder they fitted six speeds. As voting took place over the weekend, the S2000 maintained a substantial lead, but as Sunday drew to a close the Miata eked out the lead and in the end, took the checkered flag.

XGA replacing Honda's S2000?

Looks like the S2000's epitaph has already been written, as Honda may be planning a replacement dubbed internally as the XGA. What the XGA will be when it comes online is anyone's guess, though. Road and Track is reporting that at first it thought the S2000 replacement would grow a roof and an extra set of doors. This four-door sports coupe would employ Honda's SH-AWD technology and possibly use some advanced hybrid powertrain.

Now R&T is hearing from inside Honda's hallowed halls that the XGA will be a coupe based on the RL platform and feature either a V8 or V10, probably a detuned version of what ends up powering the next Acura NSX. Word on the forums, however, is that the XGA will be slotted between the outgoing S2000 and the NSX. Rather, this vehicle isn't meant to replace Honda's high-revving roadster.

The Sports4 Concept (shown) Honda unveiled at last year's Tokyo Motor Show gives us the best indication of what the XGA will look like. Whether it will be four- or two-door in the end is still unknown, and whether or not it will be powerful enough to take on the likes of Nissan's upcoming GT-R is another whole story.

A new UK Driver Power survey conducted by Auto Express Magazine surveyed 46,000 car owners on their choice for the nation's automotive Heroes and Villains. Criteria included driving enjoyment, running costs, reliability, build quality, and so on.

The 'super' Hero? Honda's S2000 roadster. In fact, Honda placed three cars in the top ten, as did VW AG property Skoda and BMW. In a 'shades of Consumer Reports' finding, the British publication's survey found that 11 of the top 12 most reliable vehicles were Japanese, and 9 of 11 of the most problematic were of French and Italian descent.

The biggest villains? Peugeot's 206, Mercedes A-Class and the not-so-dearly departed Rover 25.
