Honda recently released its financial report for the the manufacturer's motorcycle division. Not surprisingly, two-wheel-friendly Asia accounted for a lofty 79 percent of the company's total sales in 2011. The entirety of North America, meanwhile, soaked up just 1.6 percent of the brand's total volume last year. What's more, Honda fully intends to expand its operations in the blooming Indian market. Until last year, Honda worked with Hero MotorCorp to sell its bikes in India. With the two entities officially split, the Japanese company reports it expects to see somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 percent of its sales come from the Indian market by 2020.

India boasts a population of 1.2 billion people, or around 17 percent of the world's population, making it the second-largest bike market globally. As of right now, Honda is working on chipping out a 20 percent share of that pie, which means it already dominates the country's motorcycle market as the largest foreign bike manufacturer.
Honda projects 30 percent of motorcycle sales to come from India by 2020 originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 23 May 2012 18:29:00 EST.
Honda and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have issued a recall for certain Goldwing motorcycles. Some bikes manufactured between 2001 and 2010 may have been built with a secondary master cylinder that could cause the rear brake to drag. We probably don't need to tell you that unwarranted, additional rear braking on a motorcycle is a bad thing, and NHTSA says that prolonged brake drag could cause a crash or a fire. A total of 126,000 models are part of the recall. At this point, it's unclear if any accidents have resulted from the malfunctioning part.

Honda will inspect the vehicles' secondary master cylinder and replace them as necessary free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in early January. Click past the jump for the full recall notice.
Continue reading Honda recalling over 125,000 Goldwing motorcycles

Honda recalling over 125,000 Goldwing motorcycles originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 06 Dec 2011 09:59:00 EST.
Something tells us few riders here in the States are sulking over the fact that the Honda Integra isn't coming to the land of the free. We don't blame them. Honda has already served up the goods on the company's cruiser and sportbike ranges, but we now know what to expect from the rest of the lineup.

The 2012 VFR1200F will pack a slightly larger fuel tank for additional range as well as a redesigned seat. The big sport tourer also now comes standard with traction control to go along with the optional dual-clutch transmission, and Honda says the 1,200cc engine now boasts more low-end torque than before.

Models like the 2012 CB1000R and CB250R will continue on largely unchanged, however. That's no bad thing, especially considering that the CB250R just arrived on our shores. Look for the 2012 model to show up in dealer show rooms as soon as February of next year. Hit the jump for the full press release.
Continue reading Honda dishes the skinny on 2012 motorcycle line

Honda dishes the skinny on 2012 motorcycle line originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 09 Nov 2011 09:27:00 EST. Both plants are responsible for producing the company's stable of motorcycles. The Hamamatsu plant, which builds the CBR600RR and CBR1000RR, has closed its doors today, March 14, while the Kumamato factory will be shuttered tomorrow. The latter facility is responsible for the Goldwing.

Both plants were far from the worst areas of earthquake and tsunami damage, but with massive power and parts shortages and a huge human toll, there's little sense in operating the plants at this time. The Kumamato facility is set to reopen on March 20th, but so far there's no word on when operations at Hamamatsu will resume.

Honda has committed to helping with the Japanese recovery effort by donating $3.9 million, 1,000 generators and 5,000 fuel canisters. Hit the jump for a look at the company's release on the disaster.
Considering its market domination over the last year, we wouldn't be surprised if Honda simply left things pretty much alone for '09. There is one new feature, though, and it's a biggie: optional ABS brakes. This will be the first application of anti-lock brakes in a machine of this caliber, and early reports indicate that people are seeing improved lap times as a result. In addition to the brakes, expect to see some color changes and a Repsol race edition.

Moving on to Honda's smaller-bore machine, the CBR600RR will also get optional C-ABS along with engine changes designed to improve torque right in the middle of the power band, between 8,000 and 12,000 RPM. Along with these changes comes revised styling with flashy colors pulled straight from the mid-'90s. Apparently, neon green and electric blue are back. Why didn't somebody tell us sooner? Update: Title fixed.
Besides all being categorized as "Adventure Touring" bikes, what do the Suzuki V-Strom series and Kawasaki's new Versys have in common? They're both less than 1000cc's and sold in America. Not that we're keeping track or anything, but so are the BMW R1200GS, KTM 990 Adventure, Triumph Tiger 1050, Ducati Multistrada, Aprilia Caponord and even the new Benelli TreK 1130. Not so the Honda Transalp, which has just been completely refreshed and is being shown off at the Paris Motorcycle Show. Sporting a liquid-cooled V-Twin of just less than 700cc's, the Transalp would make a very logical competitor to the aforementioned Versys 650 and V-Strom 650, wouldn't you say? It's not so much that Honda's own XR650L is a bad bike -- it's actually quite good at what it does -- we just doubt that many potential buyers cross-shop the XR with bikes in the Adventure category. Consider too that BMW is rumored to be bringing a GS version of the new F800 stateside as well, and a strong argument could be made that Honda should enter the market.

Regardless of whether it comes to the U.S. or not, the Transalp is a fine Adventure Tourer. A look at our hosted pictures will show you that Honda has made some serious upgrades to their super-popular Euro-bound machine. Riders should enjoy the protection provided by the ample windscreen and fairing, and will likely find a comfortable riding position. Pictures also show the serious routing maneuvers the exhaust gases are forced to take as the bike has been made Euro 3 emissions compliant. If you're reading this and you live in the States, take heart... Kawasaki saw fit to make their new Versys available here. Maybe Honda will show us some love too.

Some people say that the type of car you drive is directly proportional to the amount of action you get. The folks over at Honda Motor Company took that a little too literally when they printed up manuals for 18,000 Honda Fits and 8,000 units of the company's 2007 motorcycles. In an attempt to provide customers the number for a government hotline, the manual actually quotes the digits of an even "hotter" line at which a woman -- not the kind of girl you'd bring home to Mom, by the way -- lets callers know that they're welcome to talk at a rate of just 99 cents per minute. Jokes aside, the misprint has irritated enough customers to get the attention of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and affected customers should be receiving a correction in the form of a postcard in the mail somewhat soon.
