It's the most popular form of motorsport in America by far, but push come to shove, there just aren't any big oval-track racing mavens on our staff. The F1 fans among us couldn't help but take notice when the grand prix drivers started streaming in to stock cars, but beyond that....

[Source: AutoWeek]
Continue reading SPOILER ALERT: NASCAR Nextel Cup wraps up at Homestead

SPOILER ALERT: NASCAR Nextel Cup wraps up at Homestead originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 19 Nov 2007 16:35:00 EST. There were several instructors from the local school on hand to give us a familiarization lap around Homestead, but there was one driver in particular that we wanted to catch a ride with.

Tommy Constantine campaigns a Nissan 350Z GT in the Grand Am Cup and in addition to being sponsored by the automaker, gets financial backing and, ummm, encouragement from Playboy. So much so that according to one of the PR people, it's a rare occasion that he doesn't come with two or three Bunnies in tow. Unfortunately, our time at the track was one of those rare occasions.

Regardless, we were able to grab a helmet when the rest of the journos were stuffing their faces with free grub and ride shotgun as Constantine flogged the SE-R within inches of its life. Just like many of the automotive epiphanies we've had over the years, this was yet another example why we'll stick to writing about cars and guys like Tommy gets to race them. Humbling? Yes. But we know where we fit in.

Check the video after the jump.

Continue reading VIDEO: Sentra SE-R hot laps with Tommy Constantine

VIDEO: Sentra SE-R hot laps with Tommy Constantine originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 02 Apr 2007 13:05:00 EST.
Nine years ago, from his couch in El Cajon, California, Jimmie Johnson watched his future team's co-owner, Jeff Gordon, win the NASCAR Nextel Cup championship (then the NASCAR Winston Cup Series). Last night, he raised the chalice himself after finishing 9th at Homestead, 56 points ahead of Matt Kenseth for the season, as the 2006 NASCAR Nextel Cup series champion.

The #48 Lowes Home Improvement Chevrolet team overcame a hole in the grille and no tape to fix it, a fantastic call by crew chief Chad Knaus, catching a loose left front lug nut before Jimmy left the pits that kept them from going a lap down, and a near-miss with Robbie Gordon in the closing laps to complete the chase for his first NASCAR Nextel Cup championship. Greg Biffle, who finished second to Tony Stewart for the championship last year, won the season-ender Ford 400 for the third year in a row.

Follow the jump for a brief history lesson on how the 10-race NASCAR Nextel Cup Championship Race went for Jimmie Johnson.
Dana and the other driver, Ed Carpenter, wereflown to Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami where two hours later Dana was pronounced dead. Carpenter escaped thetragedy with no injuries, according to SI.com.

It's unclear why Dana did not slow down on the track despite yellow warning lights flashing on the trackfor several seconds before the crash, though out of respect the rookie driver not many are pursuing an answer to thatquestion at the moment.

Dana's teammates on the Rahal Letterman team, femme phenom Danica Patrick andIndy 500 winner Buddy Rice, did not race during the season opener yesterday out of respect for Dana's death. Lastyear's Indy 500 winner, Dan Wheldon, won the race edging out Helio Castroneves by 0.0147 seconds, the ninthclosest finish in league history.

[Source: Sports Illustrated]
Tragedy on the Track: IRL driver killed during Homestead practice originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 27 Mar 2006 07:03:00 EST.
