We're not exactly sure what to say about this video, other than to point out yet again that the world can be a messed-up place to live. A man walking in the parking lot of what we think is Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, was hit by another motorist in a white truck. We can't say whether it was on purpose or malicious... until the driver seemingly chose not to stop and make sure the man he hit was uninjured.

But wait, it gets worse.

The driver of the truck fled from the scene with the man attached to the truck bed. We're not entirely sure how the victim was attached - possibly by clothing caught between the bodywork - but he apparently had enough freedom of movement that he could take out his cell phone and call 911.

The driver of the truck was arrested for a litany of crimes, and the victim managed to escape with nothing more than cuts and bruises. Oh, and a great story to tell his grandkids. See security footage of the event in the news video below.
Continue reading Man being dragged by pickup calls 911

Man being dragged by pickup calls 911 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 02 Aug 2012 16:59:00 EST.
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls of appropriate ages, your requisite dose of big-screen fast driving is here. And it looks pretty darn funny, too.

The movie in question is called Hit and Run. It was written and directed by Dax Shepard, who also stars in the film alongside such notables as Bradley Cooper, Tom Arnold, a couple of girls named Kristen, a custom '67 Lincoln Continental hot rod and a 700-horsepower off-road racing buggy. The comedy (not to be confused with the 1924, 1938, 1957, 1959, 1966, 1975, 1996, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010 or 2011 movies of the same name) centers around a guy whose past as a bank-robbing getaway driver comes back to haunt him, forcing him and his girlfriend to hit the road.

It tickles us in all the right places, but we'll let you judge for yourself from the trailer down below. Look for it at local theaters from August 24.
Continue reading Hit and Run is speeding towards a theater near you

Hit and Run is speeding towards a theater near you originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 15 May 2012 18:59:00 EST.
There has been plenty of debate about whether bicyclists should be able to take up a lane typically reserved for motor vehicles. While that argument is far from settled, we can all agree that hit-and-run accidents between cars and bikes have got to stop.

At least one bus driver seems to agree with that statement, as evidenced by the action displayed in this video posted by the Bethlehem, Pennsylvania police department. The driver in question, a minor, faces multiple charges.

After seeing the bicyclist get hit, a quick-thinking bus driver can be seen blocking both traffic lanes, leaving the hit-and-run driver with nowhere to go. Well done. Hit the jump to watch the traffic camera footage.
Continue reading Watch a bus driver block escape of hit-and-run driver

Watch a bus driver block escape of hit-and-run driver originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 07 Apr 2012 20:01:00 EST.
Police in Surrey, England had a close call recently. A driver in a BMW ran what looks to be a roadblock, striking a Volvo police car before coming to a stop against a traffic barrier. An officer standing at the rear of the patrol vehicle was also struck and thrown as a result of the collision. Miraculously, the policeman not only appears to have escaped harm, it would appear he actually had the presence of mind to pursue the fleeing driver on foot. According to the Associated Press, the perpetrator was later apprehended after a brief chase. There's no word on exactly how far under the local penitentiary they plan on burying the guy.

The clip is a good example of just how dangerous everyday police work can be, especially when unpredictable drivers are involved. Hit the jump to check out the remarkable dashcam video for yourself... and remember to give your local law enforcement some space next time you see them on the side of the road.
Continue reading Crazy hit-and-run on UK police car captured by dashcam

Crazy hit-and-run on UK police car captured by dashcam originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 02 Aug 2011 12:31:00 EST. Police in Windsor, Ontario are attempting to determine the type of vehicle involved in a fatal hit and run recently. Kyle Peters, a 15-year-old, was struck while riding his bicycle on Country Road 34. After being admitted to the hospital in critical condition, Peters died from his injuries the following morning. According to The Toronto Star, Peters was hit somewhere between roads 21 and 37 and was struck at around 9 p.m. A single piece of fiberglass was recovered from the scene, measuring 11 inches by 16 inches.

So far, police have been unable to identify the vehicle that struck Peters. Law enforcement is welcoming any tips related to vehicles with missing pieces of fender in the area. Likewise, police are seeking help identifying the vehicle based on the piece of bodywork as well. Do you recognize the fiberglass piece above? Take your best guess in 'Comments' and be sure to note that anyone with information on the accident can contact the Leamington Police Department via their website. Thanks for the tip, Dan!

*Update: The Toronto Star is reporting that Peter Martens Schmitt, 18, has been arrested in connection with this incident and charged with failure to remain at the scene of an accident, criminal negligence causing death and dangerous driving causing death. He was driving an older model Audi.
Police in Ypsilanti Township, MI are looking for a burgundy vehicle in connection with a hit-and-run accident that critically injured an 11 year-old boy. This isn't the type of news we typically publish here at Autoblog, but the cops in Ypsi could use some help identifying the one piece of evidence they do have.

Above is an image of fragments of a driver-side headlight cover that was left at the scene of the accident by a mid-size burgundy-colored vehicle. Try as we might to come up with the vehicle that produced such a thing, we've come up decidedly short. Good thing we know a few million of the most knowledgeable enthusiasts on the planet (that's you) to help us come up with the vehicle that matches the evidence. We know it's a long-shot, but if you have a good idea of what vehicle this headlight cover comes from, hit the jump and give us your hypothesis in the comments. Make sure to provide some explanation as to why the headlamp cover might match the vehicle.
The authorities there evidently skipped the pad and pencil and went straight to the Nintendo Wii when they had to come up with an image of the perpetrator, using the Mii digital avatar tool.

It would almost be more believable if the police were actually looking for an avatar that had escaped its console and gone on a joyride, rather than looking for a human being who looks like an avatar that looks a little surprised and a little high.

Oh, and the sign says "This man is wanted for a hit and run - if you see him please report him to Kanagawa police immediately." Crashing into someone and speeding away is a bad idea in any case, but with the internet shrinking the globe, it's especially dumb now. Members of Canada's Beyond.ca automotive forums came to the rescue of a Mercedes driver that absorbed the kinetic energy these young knuckleheads didn't manage to scrub off in time. A quick thinking forum member just happened to be right there with his DSLR and monster lens and snapped several nice, clear pictures of these jerks zipping away from the scene. Beyond.ca member three33 created a post asking others to be on the lookout for a silver RSX that'd cracked up his buddy's car. In a masterstroke of serendipity, fellow forum member CalgaryDave (whose pix show up on Beyond as his friend TypeS - long story, explained here with more details) was just a little further back. Thinking quickly, CalgaryDave hopped out into the street and captured incriminating evidence that removes any chance of lying your way out of it. PWNED. Don't mess with the internet.

Thanks for the tip, Bocho!
Forum busts hit and run RSX originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 12 Mar 2007 15:28:00 EST.
Apparently, the deceased was the victim of a prior hit-and-run, and had been left lying in the road when the second driver came along and snagged the corpse with the undercarriage of her vehicle. It's estimated that she drove about two miles with the body dangling underneath before realizing that something was wrong. She will not be charged for any wrongdoing, and the perpetrator of the hit-and-run is being sought by police.

Instead of understandably gettingmad or sensibly suing the drivers for millions, he instead founded the company GlobalMobile Alert which developed a system called MyMobileAlert.

MyMobileAlert tracks the cellphonevia GPS as its owner drives about their business. When the system determines the chatty driver is approaching withinone hundred feet of a stoplight or a certain distance from an intersection, the cellphone will emit a loud 'chirp' tonotify the driver who can then take any appropriate actions.

The only requirement for MyMobileAlert is aGPS-capable cellphone; the issuing wireless company would install the necessary software. So far the system has beendemonstrated in cities such as West Hollywood, California.

[Source: Technology Review]
Chirp alerts cell-gabbing driver of intersection originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 21 Apr 2006 19:55:00 EST.
