Passing your high school courses and passing your driver's license test are two very different things. Though they're independent of each other now, lawmakers in some states are trying to tie the two together. Certain states are examining legislation that would bar high school drop-outs from getting a driver's license.

States including Georgia, Massachusetts, Texas, New York and Michigan, are in favor of these anti-drop measures. The idea behind the proposed laws is that kids would be more likely to stay in school if the privilege of driving an automobile were at stake. Other states, like California, Illinois, Florida and Ohio don't see things the same way. Those against the laws argue that parents are ultimately the ones who should be in charge of revoking driving privileges, not the state.

What say you? Should the drop-outs be banned from driving, or is this a case of the government crossing the line? Sound off in the comments, and be sure to answer the poll below.
In Tennessee this year, five high school seniors with rock solid immune systems who have also resisted the temptations of truancy will be the recipients of a free Chevy Cobalt through a new incentive program called "The Chevy Drive for Perfection." The program blankets 26 Middle Tennessee counties and will track the number of absent-free seniors throughout the school year. Come next June, those with perfect attendance will be entered into a drawing and five will drive off to college in a brand new Cobalt. And all I got was a stinkin' trophy.

[Source: The Tennessean]
Truant Tennessee teens won't get shot at free Chevy Cobalt originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 04 Aug 2006 10:01:00 EST. Seasoned car designers from GM's Design Center and students from CSS provided instruction to the students who were charged with designing a vehicle for the 17-25 year-old crowd. The 50 lucky students chosen for the program, which is called "You Make a Difference," were invited to also participate in Advanced Sketching Clinics during the summer and six will receive a $5,000 scholarship towards freshman tuition at CSS. Last night the students' work was displayed at an evening reception held at CSS. We'll be scouring the net for some pics of the students' work in the coming days.

If GM and the College for Creative Studies had walked into my high school I probably would have vacated my bowels in excitement as, like many young auto enthusiasts, car design was at the top of my list for future careers. Unfortunately I (arguably) learned how to construct complete sentences while speaking colorfully about cars... sigh.

[Source: GM]
GM seeks next great car designer in Detroit high schools originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 24 May 2006 14:59:00 EST.
