Zero South, a company that popped up at SEMA in 2008, is back again with its Biodiesel Electric Hummer. The heavily modified H1 rides on tracks at all four corners - a necessary modification, since this Hummer is designed for an expedition to the South Pole.

The trip is going to be documented by Chris Paine, who's best known for the film Who Killed the Electric Car? It was reported back in 2008 that the vehicle was going to be driven by Buzz Aldrin and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. The film is called Drive Around the World and was shot in 3D. Drive Around the World is also the name of an organization that works to inspire an urge to explore while raising money for various charities. The H1 shown above is Zero South's vehicle for participating in these expeditions.

The Zero South Biodiesel Electric Hummer was originally setup to run on B99 fuel, but Jay Leno joined the team and modified the powertrain so that a four-cylinder diesel Volkswagen engine would act as a generator to four electric motors. Each motor would then provide power to the individual track it's coupled to. It's one heck of a Hummer, and we invite you to check it out for yourself in the gallery below.

Although it has been evident for some time that General Motors' sale of its Hummer brand to Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machines Co., Ltd., we didn't expect for word to come down today that the negotiations are dead and the brand will be wound down. Unfortunately, judging by a press release just issued by GM, that's exactly what will be happening. According to John Smith, GM's vice president of corporate planning and alliances,

"One year ago, General Motors announced that we were going to divest Hummer, as part of focusing our efforts on Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac going forward. We have since considered a number of possibilities for Hummer along the way, and we are disappointed that the deal with Tengzhong could not be completed."

As we learned from the Saab sale saga, GM announcing that the brand will be wound down does not completely extinguish hope for another buyer to slip in in the 11th hour, but it does seem highly improbable that a new party will pick up where the negotiations with China's Tengzhong left off.

In the statement available after the jump, GM does not specify what killed the planned sale of the brand, but rumors in recent months suggested that the Chinese government was not keen to sign off on the deal. At the moment, it is unclear what will happen to Hummer's H2 and H3/H3T models, but it is likely that the tooling and manufacturing rights will be sold off to other companies. It is also unclear how many employees will be out of work as a result of the closure.

As with the wind-down of its Saturn and Pontiac brands, GM has pledged to honor Hummer warranties and continue to supply service and parts.

There probably isn't any one passenger vehicle on earth that earns more ire from environmentalists than the Hummer H2. While the reality of the matter is that most Hummers aren't really much worse when it comes to fuel mileage and overall emissions than any other giant SUV (most civilian Hummers are, in fact, based largely on truck platforms from General Motors) the brand has seemingly been made into the poster child of American excess.

Interestingly, however, according to a small study of 20 Hummer owners published in the Journal of Consumer Research, that stigma may actually be a selling point for those who purchase Hummers. According to the authors of the study:

As we studied American Hummer owners and their ideological beliefs, we found that they consider Hummer driving a highly moral consumption choice. For Hummer owners it is possible to claim the moral high ground... The moralistic critique of their consumption choices readily inspired Hummer owners to adopt the role of the moral protagonist who defends American national ideals.

It's hard to argue that this report offers a conclusive look into the minds of Hummer owners and Hummer haters alike - especially when the sample size is so small - and we doubt it's going to put an end to the debate over the seemingly conflicting rights of Americans to purchase the vehicle of their choice, consume or conserve whatever resources they deem necessary and breathe clean air. That said, it's an interesting bit of research, no?

It takes a special talent to infantilize the brute strength of a Hummer H1, but someone's gone and done it with an oddly swoopy redesign. One of only two made (yes, there is another), this unique Hummer features a custom hood and front bumper, as well as a multi-section removable roof should the driver and occupants actually wish to be seen tooling around the neighborhood in this beast.

Inside, it's been all tricked out with a trifecta of television screens, ostrich leather interior, iPod-compatible entertainment system, sat-nav, back-up cameras...the works. Even the turbodiesel V8 has been tweaked and mounted with a polished aluminum snorkel, complimented by a chrome Mack truck bulldog hood ornament.
Click above for high-res gallery of our time embedded with Team HUMMER

The swan song (or would that be swan hummer?) has come for HUMMER's involvement with Rod Hall Racing. HUMMER has announced it's ending sponsorship of the team that has brought it numerous race championships and victories. Last year's accolades include first in the stock full class in the Baja 1000, and season championship honors in SCORE's stock mini and stock full class, and the Best in the Desert series.

With General Motors a little light right now on the cash front, and with HUMMER up for sale, the move had to be expected. We had a chance to ride with Chad Hall in last year's Baja 500, and we can tell you that the Hall family and the trucks they drive are first class. The H1 and H2 SUT trucks are up for sale, so if you're keen to get in the dirt with some proven tech, there's probably no better place to start.

Gallery: The Baja 500: race day with Team HUMMER Racing

[Source: Hummer Guy]
HUMMER ends sponsorship of Rod Hall Racing originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 02 Jan 2009 15:32:00 EST.
Click above for a high-res image gallery of the homemade HUMMER H1

Life is stranger than fiction. If anyone tries to tell you differently, simply point to the Canadian man who built the truck you see above, from scratch. Francois Couture, known in his posts as "H150", showed up in the Full Size Bronco forum on September 17, 2004 with a simple query: "Since I'm a Ford nut but always wanted a HUMMER but don't have lots of money, I decided to fabricate my own [based] on Ford truck frame..."

As forum users do, there were soon people offering a multitude of answers to his questions. But what the other users discovered rather quickly was that this guy was, literally true to his word, was fabricating a HUMMER H1 from nothing but plans. Using steel from his job, he built his own sheet steel bending machine, and over the last four years has been welding together a HUMMER H1 practically out of thin air. And get this: before he started his project, Francois didn't know how to weld. He learned to weld in order to build the truck. And he's good. Like, awesome. His fabrication work is as professional as anything you'd see from folks with a lot more money than a dedicated husband and father in Quebec.

The H1 is being built on a donor frame from a 1987 Ford F150, with an engine from a donated E-350 Super Duty shuttle van, and a whole bunch of other ingenious swaps, all from Fords. If you have the time to read 45 pages, it is worth it. Our favorite name for the truck so far: H4d. After four years and a bit, he's still working on it, and he's taking donations at the behest of other forum members in order to get the truck finished this summer. The effort and the passion speaks for themselves in the gallery of photos below. Hat tip to reader Kiran!

Gallery: Homemade HUMMER H1 - The H4d

[Source: Full Size Bronco]
Determined man builds HUMMER H1 from tired Ford F-150 originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 02 Jan 2009 11:28:00 EST.
Now that the Hummer -- the original Hummer H1 -- is distinctly out of flavor, the U.S. armed services are busy looking for its replacement. Having put out a request for proposals, one of the supposed leading candidates is this: a Joint Light Tactical Vehicle developed by Navistar and BAE Systems, Inc, a British defense industry firm. The two together already provide the H1's temporary replacement, the Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle.

The Mad Max monstrosity has the same track as the H1, but that's about all they have in common. Built of many off-the-shelf components from Navistar's parts bin, the truck's modular build configuration makes an easier job of modifying it for different missions and repairing. It's shaped to disperse charges from roadside bombs, the armor is an inch thick, it has a flat floor to allow exit from either side of the vehicle, and it can escape a battle without a wheel and without engine cooling. Not bad. Follow the link to get the full specs on the military's potential new charge. But if they want something even more brutish, they could always go for this.

You may also remember that the producer of the original H1, AM General, is also working on its own candidate for the next Joint Light Tactical Vehicle, which we've yet to see.

While much of that portrayal is due to GM's own marketing, the people who purchase the imposing 'utes - be they high-profile celebs or well-to-do suburbanites - have done more to define the brand than GM's marketing boffins ever could. But the General wants to change all that.

Mark LaNeve, GM's North American veep of sales, service and marketing, is spearheading a campaign that's trying to show HUMMERs in a different light; specifically vehicles to get a particular job done. "No one criticizes a bulldozer for its gas mileage. That's because it's built to do a job," laments LaNeve in a USAToday interview. Fair enough Mark, but a bulldozer has a single-minded purpose - moving earth - whereas HUMMERs aren't always being used to plug mud and move boats. They've become lifestyle vehicles that are often not used for their intended purpose - just like the majority of SUVs on the road.

Regardless, GM's recent ad campaigns attempt to show the HUMMER in a more functional light, depicting the overblown SUV hauling firefighting gear and helping out with natural disaster relief. "Purpose Built" is the new tagline, but at the end of the day, no amount of PR will help HUMMER if people continue to see them parked outside the local Starbucks.

[Source: USAToday via Winding Road]
HUMMER attacks perception problems with "Purpose Built" campaign originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 21 Feb 2008 13:05:00 EST. Tupac's H1 is for sale on eBay, after having been raffled off in a contest on BET, then sold to someone else, then sold or given back to his family, then transferred to his entertainment company, Havenotz Entertainment. And now, their forced liquidation sale is your potential gain.

The 1996 H1 hardtop is remarkably lightly altered, with nothing more than a lightbar, and a couple of Hummer logos and "Eliminator" badges on the rear fenders. The tan interior doesn't look to have a single DVD player or 10-inch LCD in sight. Apparently, bling does know some bounds, and if you can call an H1 'tasteful,' then this is it. The current bid: $200,200. If you just gotta have it, the Buy It Now Price is $500,000 -- which should buy you a nice slice of heaven in Thugs Mansion. Company officials say expensive gas and relatively large sticker prices are two obstacles even the lane-hogging Hummer H2 just can't overcome. H2 sales have also been cannibalized by the somewhat smaller and more fuel-efficient H3.

On an ironically positive note, U.S. government orders for military Humvees are outpacing the Indiana plant's production capability. AMG spokesman Craig Mac Nab says some of the newly unemployed workers might be moved to H1 production.

This isn't the first time H2 plant workers have been laid off. AMG let go 170 workers in January. The H2 plant also shut down for two weeks in October in an attempt to control overproduction. The oft rumored H4 will be smaller than the successful H3 SUV that's currently driving HUMMER sales and will be slated to compete with the Jeep Wrangler. While the H3 is built on the same platform as the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon mid-size pickups, we don't yet know what will underpin the H3. AutoWeek sources confirm, however, that it will not be built on a front-wheel drive platform. With the success of the H3 worldwide continuing unabated despite the fluctuation of fuel prices, the decision to produce the H4 concept should be an easy one for General Motors. Expect a version suitable for mass market consumption around 2010. HUMMER will also have a pickup version of the H3 on display at the Detroit show. With two new potential vehicles on deck, HUMMER appears ready to carve as large a niche for itself as possible out of the remaining pool of off-road warriors.

[Source: AutoWeek]

Related posts:
Back in January of this year, the automaker transferred 170 employees off the line and into another plant to make up for shortfalls in H2 sales. Currently, the Mishawaka plant only has 600 employees, down from the 1,000 that it normally utilizes at full tilt boogie.

[Source: Freep]
H2 factory shuts the line down for two weeks originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 06 Oct 2006 09:06:00 EST. HUMMER announced today that a new HUMMER toy will join the current lineup of eight that the brand has been stuffing in Happy Meal boxes since the beginning of the month, but this one will only be available at HUMMER dealerships.

The new HUMMER toy is modeled after off-road racing legend Rod Hall's Team HUMMER H3 that has won its class in all 17 off-road races it's entered since being introduced in 2005, including the 2005 Baja 1000 and 2006 Baja 500. Only 250,000 Team HUMMER Rod Hall toys will be produced and you'll have to find a participating dealership to get your greasy hands on one.

(Additional pic after the jump)

[Source: GM]

Related posts:
A HUMMER in your Happy Meal
HUMMER Happy Meal hysteria
Continue reading Another toy HUMMER! Because he has the new HUMMER Happy Meal toys before everyone else.

Starting tomorrow, one of eight toy HUMMERS will be packed in each "boy" Happy Meal ("girl" meals will feature Polly Pocket, so don't fret if you've got a daughter, moms and dads). The full HUMMER lineup is represented, from the now-defunct H1 to the H3T Concept pickup. There's even an alternative-fuel H2H, whose hydrogen tank glows green when the car is pushed. It also comes with "Hydrogen" decals that can be applied to the bodywork to ensure maximum political correctness.

Admittedly, the level of detail on the toys is pretty good for a meal throw-in. We might just have to take a ride over to Mickey D's ourselves...

(More Ronald, toy shots, and a press release after the jump)

[Source: GM, McDonalds]
Continue reading Get a HUMMER in your Happy Meal

Get a HUMMER in your Happy Meal originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 03 Aug 2006 18:02:00 EST. That's exactly the principle they applied to BMW's European entry-level model, the 1 Series, when they gave it an engine transplant from the M5.

The resulting H1 was put through its paces by the crew over at World Car Fans, and as you might expect, a five-liter, 450 hp V8 powerplant gives a 3,185 lb car fairly impressive performance - 0-60 mph in 4.6 seconds, with a top speed of 188 mph. Even with the big V8 jammed into the RWD hatchback's engine bay, the front/rear weight distribution is reported as a surprisingly well-balanced 52/48 percent, giving the car handling to match (if not actually control) its massive power. (Follow the link for the full road test.)

The usual suspension upgrades keep the 19-inch wheels in contact with the pavement, and a fairly understated bodykit helps the aero and cooling without succumbing to the boy-racer look.

The price for the pocket rocket is - wait for it - about $128,000. Which brings to mind another hot rodding aphorism - "Speed costs money. How fast do you want to go?"

[Sources: World Car Fans, Hartge]
Hartge gives BMW 1 Series the hot rod treatment originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 07 Jul 2006 19:58:00 EST. Well, two Hummer dealerships may have found a technological workaround. Sib blog engadget reports that Detroit Hummer and Hummer of Novi are selling a modification, called the "Mileage Maximizer," that supposedly increases the SUV's miles per gallon up to as much as the mid-twenties. The modification comes from the aftermarket parts company Air Synergy Labs Inc. with the the dealerships charging $185.95 for the device.

The modifiers have not yet been tested by Hummer or the brand's parent company, General Motors. Both strongly discourage such modifications and hint they may not honor any warranties to modified vehicles. Also, no governmental body has certified the device's claims. The dealerships, though, are pleased with the brisk sales of the modified SUVs. States Russ Reimer, service director for both dealerships, "....We've had some customers already call us back and say they have seen an improvement."

Do we have to ask? Comments are now open.

[Source: Wall Street Journal via engadget; picture by Getty Images]
Mod eliminates Hummer mileage problem...or does it? originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 30 Jun 2006 17:03:00 EST. He and I talk about the event and some interesting autos that showed up to compete in Brock's baby. We also reveal the deal on Jason Vines taking issue with us (i.e. me) questioning his moves as a PR man in a post that went live yesterday. You can check out that post here for some background. About 12,000 have been sold to the public since the civilian version first went on sale in 1992.

Back then the Hummer was sold by AM General, the original developer and producer of the military version called the Humvee. To this day AM General produces both the military and civilian versions of the Hummer in its Mishawaka, Indiana plant, though it sold the marketing rights for the civilian version to GM in 1999. Since then it's also been contracted to produce the smaller Hummer H2 for General Motors.

AM General will not dismiss any of its workforce because of GM's decision to cancel the H1, but will most likely switch those workers over to production of the military version. The market for the military version seems to be pretty bullish right now, anyway.

[Source: USA Today]
Hummer H1 retires from duty next month originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 13 May 2006 00:05:00 EST.
