In September of 2011, Chinese drifter Wang Qi broke the Guinness record for the world's longest sustained drift, doing 13 laps inside the Olympic Center Stadium in Tianlin, China for 5,802.3 meters. That was broken in February of this year by Abdo Feghali in Abu Dhabi drifting a new Chevrolet Camaro around a skidpad for 11,180 meters - almost seven miles. In March, BMW decided it wanted the record "back in the US," and set up a course at its BMW Performance Driving School near Greenville, South Carolina to get the job done. On May, 11 it was Mission Accomplished when Performance Center driver Johan Schwartz drifted an M5 around a skidpad continuously for 51.3 miles.

Despite that accomplishment, we're pretty sure that professional drifter Vaughn Gittin, Jr. isn't impressed. The way Guinness defines "drifting" can also describe a donut, which is effectively the kind of drifting that's been done for these last three records. BMW went even further by watering down the surface of the track, reducing the skill required and the need to change tires during the effort. On the other hand, you can't drift a car for long in a straight line, but perhaps there should be some clarification or classifications added to the milestones.

There's a pair of videos below taken during the record-breaking run, and a press release from the company that did it.
Continue reading BMW sets Guinness record for longest drift with new M5 [w/videos]

BMW sets Guinness record for longest drift with new M5 [w/videos] originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 15 May 2013 13:00:00 EST.
The previous mark for the number of cars simultaneously performing a burnout, as certified by those record keepers at the Guinness Book of World Records, was 49. That mark has now been moved to 69 (even though the newscast graphic says 70, it was 69) thanks to the petrolheads ready to sacrifice tires at Australia's Summernats Car Festival in the nation's capital, Canberra.

The annual festival has always included burnout competitions, usually for one of two titles that end in "a bloodbath of rubber and smoke." According to one of the Summernats co-owners, this year's attempt effort in the Liqui-Moly Power Pit ended with about 30 tires blowing during the 30-seconds of sustained scorching needed to take the record.

You'll find a newscast of the burnout in the first video below, along with a spectator's capture of the record from beginning to end. And smoke. Lots and lots of smoke.
Continue reading Australians take world's largest burnout crown [w/video]

Australians take world's largest burnout crown [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 06 Jan 2013 19:00:00 EST.
It's official: Top Gear has collected a Guinness World Record. Everyone's favorite show about three jokers and their automotive exploits is the most widely watched factual TV program - you guessed it - in the world. All told, the original show is viewed in 212 territories around the globe, which is enough to take the honor. Jeremy Clarkson himself accepted the award on behalf of his cohorts and the crew behind Top Gear, saying only, "I am very proud to be involved in such a factual program."

Is that a hint of sarcasm we detect, sir?

The show certainly isn't lacking for fans with a Facebook page boasting over 12.1 million likes and counting.
Top Gear snags Guinness record for being world's most widely watched factual show originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 18 Sep 2012 17:32:00 EST.
At this year's Annual "Comedy and Cars" gala at the Petersen Automotive Museum, funnyman and car nut Adam Carolla will be honored, as well as Disney/Pixar's John Lasseter. They'll be named the 2012 Automotive Enthusiast of the Year, and 2012 Automotive Visionary of the Year, respectively.

According to museum chairman Steve Young, "We felt it was time to recognize those who have used to gift of humor to promote the enjoyment of the automobile as a creative outlet." Young would be referring to Carolla's "CarCast" a weekly automotive podcast, and the "Adam Carolla Podcast" which, at over 5 million downloads a month, is the Guinness Book of World Records' "Most Downloaded Podcast."

John Lasseter, meanwhile, oversees the creative aspect of all Disney and Pixar films. The two-time Oscar-winner made his debut with Toy Story in 1995 and is being recognized by the Petersen Museum for his work directing Cars and Cars 2. Lasseter has a cameo appearance in Cars 2 as "John Lassetire," the crew chief for Jeff Gordon's "Jeff Gorvette" character. In a comment released by the Petersen Museum, Lasseter says, "The Petersen Museum has the same passion for cars that we at Pixar have for animation...we are kindred spirits, and I'm honored both as a filmmaker and lifelong car lover to receive this award."

Both men will be honored a the Museum's annual "Comedy and Cars Gala" on Thursday, October 4, 2012.
Continue reading Petersen museum to honor John Lasseter, Adam Carolla

Petersen museum to honor John Lasseter, Adam Carolla originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 01 Sep 2012 12:02:00 EST.
When Nissan wants to set a speed record, you'd expect it to use the GT-R to get there. Or maybe one of its myriad racing cars - it does, after all, power the bulk of the LMP2 racers on the grid at Le Mans, not to mention the experimental DeltaWing. But the Leaf? Sure, maybe for emissions-free motoring, but not for speed.

Yet it's the Leaf in which Nissan will attempt to set a new Guinness World Record at the upcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed. And not the Nismo RC version, either, though that will be on hand for the festival as well. No, Nissan will attempt a world record in a bone-stock electric Leaf... in reverse.

Because EVs like the Leaf power their wheels directly from their electric motors, they should - in theory at least - be able to drive just as fast in reverse as they do moving forward. To test that theory, Nissan is brining the Leaf to Goodwood where its stunt driver Terry Grant (the same guy who drove a Juke on two wheels up the hill at the event last year) will attempt to drive the entire course backwards.

In the process, Nissan hopes that Grant and the Leaf will set a new record for the fastest time over a distance of one mile in reverse. And considering the twist, turns, peaks and dips of the Goodwood circuit, that likely won't prove too easy. But we sure look forward to seeing how it turns out.
The record for the longest parade of Ferrari models was set back in 2007 when 385 examples lapped Silverstone at the same time. That record was broken with 490 cars sometime thereafter, but the Maranello automaker's London-based unit is gearing up to shatter the record once again.

So far, Ferrrari North Europe has registered a whopping 600 cars to participate in the event during the Ferrari Racing Days event at Silverstone. That would be enough to take back the record on its own, but the organizers are hopping to attract another 400 participants over the next few months to make it a nice, round 1000 vehicles.

That'll set the bar high enough when the event takes place on September 15, but to see what the previous run of 385 cars looks like, take a stroll through the high-resolution image gallery above.
Continue reading Ferrari aims to set record at Silverstone with thousand-car parade

Ferrari aims to set record at Silverstone with thousand-car parade originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 19 Jun 2012 17:44:00 EST.
Ever wonder why the Guinness Book of World Records is so darn big? We're not exactly experts on the ins and outs of officially recognized feats, but we'd have to say it's because the organization will put its stamp of approval on just about anything imaginable. Like, for instance, the top speed of a toilet.

That's right, folks. There's a new World's Fastest Toilet, and it hails from Australia. Piloted by Jolene Van Vugt, this motorized porcelain throne managed a two-way average of 46.6 miles per hour. Don't worry - this record may have been claimed, but the World's Fastest Kitchen Sink has a nice ring to it, don't you think?

If you think setting a world record on a toilet is crazy, perhaps you're not familiar with Van Vugt. She's a professional motocross rider, was the first woman to backflip a dirtbike and is one of the stars of the Nitro Circus television and live-action show.

Naturally, we have video of Jolene on the toilet below, along with an image gallery of the self-proclaimed porcelain princess in the act before, during and after the flush.
Continue reading Jolene Van Vugt sets Guinness record on... a toilet [w/video]

Jolene Van Vugt sets Guinness record on... a toilet [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 02 May 2012 19:59:00 EST.
Ah, donuts - one of the automotive world's purest forms of hooliganism. We've all done 'em, simply because every once in a while, it's just plain fun to light up a car's back end and fling it around in a circle.

Fun as they may be, donuts aren't necessarily all that fun to watch. After all, one car spinning in circles certainly loses its charm after a while. But what about seventy cars spinning in smoke-filled circles? Now that's something.

Earlier this week, over 70 vehicles showed up at Infineon Raceway in order to break the Guinness World Record for the largest number of cars performing donuts successfully. Check out what ensued in the video after the break, complete with epic battle background music.
Continue reading Guinness Book of World Records spin-off shows it's time to make the donuts

Guinness Book of World Records spin-off shows it's time to make the donuts originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 22 Mar 2012 20:01:00 EST.
Anyone who has ever set up a Hot Wheels track knows that there is no more awesome an automotive stunt than the loop-the-loop. While some would argue that a good old fashioned Duke Boys jump takes the prize, we feel that the case for driving upside down is just irrefutable. That there are apparently people actively setting new world records for driving around loop-the-loops only makes us more convinced.

A new Guinness World Record for circling the largest loop-the-loop was set just a few months ago by Li Yatao, who drove a Youngman Lotus L5 around a loop with a diameter of 42 feet, 2.69 inches. The car appears to have had both front and rear bumpers removed to improve ground clearance during the run, and of course, a full roll cage was fitted. Yatao is a driver on a Youngman factory team - yes, that Youngman, the would-be suitor for Saab.

Go ahead and watch this amazing video for yourself, after the jump.
Continue reading Watch Chinese driver nail world's largest loop-the-loop

Watch Chinese driver nail world's largest loop-the-loop originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 20 Mar 2012 16:41:00 EST.
The Rose Bowl - The Grandaddy Of Them All, as they say - is one of the most storied bowl games in college football, and the pre-game parade is a big part of the pageantry of the event. Last year, Natural Balance broke the record for the world's largest float with an 84,300-pound rolling display, but the pet food company seems thirsty for more world-record glory.

For 2012, Natural Balance is building a 100,000-pound monstrosity that is 116 feet long and contains a 65-foot wave pool built specifically for one Tillman the Dog. Tillman will be surfing the waves on the float, which sounds impressive if you didn't already know that this super dog is also an avid skateboarder.

To tow this massive float, the folks at Natural Balance are counting on power from the tried-and-true Ford 6.8-liter V10. The 362 horsepower mill, which boasts 457 pound-feet of torque, is completely stock. The same can be said for the six-speed automatic transmission, save for a custom gear reduction setup behind the output shaft to get the float moving. The beefy 10-pot was pulled directly from an F-650, but we're guessing the 28-foot long truck won't be getting a 100,000-pound tow rating anytime soon.

Hit the jump to check out the entire infographic for yourself. You'll learn that the float is larger than 2,000 Tillmans, and you'll also catch a glance of the custom rig that will house Ford's big V10.
Continue reading Infographic: Ford 6.8L V10 to tow world's largest float

Infographic: Ford 6.8L V10 to tow world's largest float originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 22 Dec 2011 14:29:00 EST.
Koenigsegg is officially amazing, at least according to the Guinness Book of World Records. The well-known record-keeping organization has granted the Koenigsegg Agera the record of quickest 0-300-0 kilometers per hour by a two-seat production car. The time? A scant 21.19 seconds, recorded at the Angeholm Airfield in Sweden on September 2, 2011, with Robert Serwanski behind the wheel.

That's just over 186 miles per hour, then back to a complete stop, in 21 seconds. Yowza. That's not the only impressive feat accomplished that day by the Agera, though it is the only one that was certified as a world record by Guinness. For the record, Koenegsegg's masterpiece scooted to 300 km/h in 14.53 seconds on its way to 200 mph in 17.68 seconds. It can stop with equal alacrity, taking an evil 6.66 seconds to halt from 300 km/h and 7.28 from 200 mph.

The final stat is arguably the most impressive: 0-200 mph and back to 0 in just 24.96 seconds. Want to know what's even better than that? The fact that it was all recorded on video. Click past the break to see for yourself.
Continue reading Koenigsegg Agera gets official Guinness World Record for quickest 0-300-0 km/h

Koenigsegg Agera gets official Guinness World Record for quickest 0-300-0 km/h originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 30 Nov 2011 13:28:00 EST.
If you're heading to Hell, you're probably going to take a ride in a hearse at some point in your journey. Seems only fitting, then, that a group of hearse owners chose the tiny hamlet of Hell, Michigan as the place to set a world record. An official from the Guinness Book Of World Records was on hand to verify that the 51-hearse gathering is a new record in a category that we didn't even know existed.

Hearse owners descended on Hell to roll into the record books together, and the vehicles arrived in a variety of shapes and sizes. Click past the jump to watch the entire crew ride into the pages of history in a couple of videos. In the second video, skip to the 4:25 mark to catch a glimpse of our favorite hearse of the bunch.
Continue reading Hell plays host to world's largest gathering of hearses

Hell plays host to world's largest gathering of hearses originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 21 Sep 2011 12:31:00 EST.
Barton, Vermont is a small town with big ambitions. The tiny burg just so happens to be the birthplace of Henry Leland: the man behind both Cadillac and Lincoln. As such, the municipality intends to honor Leland by attempting to nab the honor of the world's longest Cadillac parade from a car club in the Netherlands. In order to make it happen, the city of 2,800 people is inviting Caddy owners from around the country to join up at the Orleans County Fair.

General Motors decided to pitch in on the effort by spreading the word throughout its social media empire and dealer network as well as paying the Guinness Book of World Records adjudication fee of £4,000, or around $6,513.

If all goes well, the fair will have more than 102 cars on hand. That's the number of vehicles required to best the standing record. Barton has even worked up a sepia-toned YouTube video inviting Cadillac owners near and far to the event, including the famed Bruce Springsteen. The parade is set to get going on August 17. Hit the jump to check out the video for yourself.
Continue reading GM to help tiny Vermont town try to set record for longest Cadillac parade

GM to help tiny Vermont town try to set record for longest Cadillac parade originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 25 Jul 2011 18:03:00 EST.
Earlier this month we told you about an amazing bridge that just opened in China. The Jiaozhou Bridge spans 26.4 miles, or just a little over the distance of a professional marathon race. That's enough to earn it a Guinness World Record for the longest roadway bridge over water.

This left the people living near Louisiana's Lake Pontchartrain feeling disappointed. The Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, you see, has long held the title of World's Longest Bridge Over Water with a span of 23.87 miles.

But there's a difference between the Jiaozhou Bridge and the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway. The Chinese bridge has bends and turns that increase its length over water, but the distance between the shores it connects is only 16 miles. The causeway, however, is a straight shot, with its shores nearly 24 miles apart. Check the rendering above prepared by the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway Commission to see what we mean.

Since Guinness creates new categories like we change socks, it went ahead and modified its record books based on this distinction: Longest Bridge Over Water (continuous) goes to the The Lake Pontchartrain Causeway and Longest Bridge Over Water (aggregate) goes to the new Jiaozhou Bridge in China. Now everyone's happy again.
China's record-breaking bridge spawns new record for 24-mile Lake Pontchartrain Causeway originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 17 Jul 2011 12:03:00 EST.
When Great Britain's Brooklands motor racing circuit opened in 1907, it was the first purpose-built motorsport venue in the world. At 2.75 miles, the course is an oldie but a goodie, and the perfect place to make automotive history. To that end, on August 16, legendary slot racing brand Scalextric, along with hoards of volunteers, built the world's largest slot car track around the Brooklands circuit in Surrey. The track was built using 20,000 sections, built over roads, water, wilderness and just about any other condition one could imagine. That's an impressive feat that is more remarkable when considering that power and remote control had to be built into the Guinness record braking track.

The recordbreaking slot track race will be featured by Top Gear host James May in his new BBC2 series James May's Toy Stories. May even raised the checkered flag at the conclusion of the world's longest slot car race. Hit the jump to watch the building and racing of this amazing slot track, as well as a second video that features May waving the checkered flag at the conclusion of the race.

[Source: YouTube]
Continue reading VIDEO: World's longest Scalectric track assembled at Brooklands, James May officiates

VIDEO: World's longest Scalectric track assembled at Brooklands, James May officiates originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 19 Aug 2009 15:00:00 EST. Yes, Guiness has indeed been notified. Powered by a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 engine that's been converted to run on the compressed gas, the silver Audi sedan was clocked at an impressive 226.55 mph (364.6 kilometers per hour). Previously, the record was held by a Bugatti that was reportedly 20 kph slower.

Amazingly, the car reportedly wasn't even running at full capacity. It seems that this particular powerplant can reliably put out over 800 horsepower, but was dialed back a few notches to around 700 horsepower to keep the all-wheel-drive Audi's transmission from showering the Papenburg, Lower Saxony, race track with a pile of gear-shaped shrapnel. One key reason the powerplant was able to make such prodigious power is because biogas carries an octane rating of over 120. Us? we like to think it was down to the BBS-aping aerodynamic wheel covers. Click past the break for the awkwardly translated press release.

[Source: Hohenester Sport]
Continue reading 227 MPH Audi A4 beats Bugatti to set world record for fastest car powered by biogas

227 MPH Audi A4 beats Bugatti to set world record for fastest car powered by biogas originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 28 May 2009 16:29:00 EST. One gentleman in the UK has perfected the donut to the point that of world record status. Russ Swift is already famous for automotive feats like the fastest-ever J-turn and the Guinness record for tightest parallel park. Now Swift has added the fastest time to complete ten donuts. Hit the jump to view Swift complete ten 360-degree turns in an Evo over a mere 16.07 seconds. As an added bonus, the folks at Guinness also added video of Mr. Swift's other record-setting automotive feats, which may be cooler than the donut record itself.

[Source: Zercustoms]
Continue reading VIDEO: World Record for doing donuts fast

VIDEO: World Record for doing donuts fast originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 10 Nov 2008 09:32:00 EST. Now the fairest Jetta of them all has set a Guinness World Record by traversing the lower 48 U.S. states while returning 58.82 mpg thanks to John and Helen Taylor.

The Taylors took 20 days to cover the 9,419 miles in a counter clockwise direction, and this wasn't a hypermiling slow-as-you-can-go affair - they stayed within 5 mph of the speed limit. Their car was completely stock as it consumed just 11 tanks of ultra low sulfur diesel and traveled 853 miles per fill up. With that kind of mileage and handling high up on the fun factor, the Jetta TDI makes an excellent case for itself if you like driving and want to lower your fuel consumption.

VW also recently told us that the go-fast Jetta TDIs in the TDI Cup Series are returning an average of 25 mpg and doing their entire 7-race series on just two tanks of gas, which includes qualifying. If that's true, there's got to be another world record in there somewhere...

[Source: AutoblogGreen]
VW Jetta TDI sets Guinness World Record of 58.82 mpg originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 30 Sep 2008 12:28:00 EST. The museum has been recognized by the Guinness Book of Records for creating the "strongest artificially generated tornado in the world." The 34.4 meter high (that is 37.2 yards to those metrically challenged) vortex was not designed as an attraction, but to channel smoke out of the building in the event of a fire. The architecture wonderment that is the museum did not make use of any fire doors in the design (surely they would get in the way of the architect's vision). In order to meet regulations, the building engineers had to determine a way to keep smoke from spreading beyond the fire level, the tornado is the resulting solution. The twister takes around seven minutes to materialize and is generated by 144 jets and 28 tons of air. The low pressure area at the center of the tornado works to create a jet stream that draws smoke out of the building's corridors and funnels it upwards and out an exhaust vent on the roof. Check the gallery for photos of a carbon dioxide infused tornado demonstration.

And the award for Top Speed Achieved by a Production Automobile goes to: Shelby Supercars' Ultimate Aero Twin Turbo. Claiming a stretch of public road in Washington State for the effort, the SSC UATT made two runs in accordance with Guinness Book of World Record rules, one in each direction. The first run clocked 257.11 MPH, the second, return one came in at 254.55 MPH. The average: 255.83 MPH. That bests all challengers -- yes, even the Veyron -- by at least 3 MPH.

For comparison, the SSC's V8 packs 1,183 BHP and 1,094 ft-lbs. as opposed to the Veyron's 16 cylinders, 1,001 HP, and 922 ft-lb. In addition to a bigger punch, the SSC also carries less weight: 2,700 pounds versus the Veyron's 4,162. Much of the Veyron poundage no doubt is attributable to its interior, which is a splendid place to be even when you're not doing 250+. SSC still needs to submit the paperwork and get official certification from Guinness before it's run is, as we say, officially official. Intriguing, though, that of all the names mentioned, the one not broached was the previous holder of the top speed record: the Callaway Sledgehammer.
