As is the case every year, Volkswagen engineers have built and brought a new toy to their fans at the annual Wörthersee festival in Reifnitz, Austria. Called the Design Vision GTI, this track toy is a Golf that's been widened, lowered and given an injection of twin-turbo V6 steroids.

The powerplant providing motivation is a 3.0-liter V6 paired with two turbochargers to produce 503 horsepower and up to 413 pound-feet of torque. With all-wheel drive and Volkswagen's famous DSG gearbox (the gear count is unknown), the Design Vision GTI can erase what's between you and 62 miles per hour in 3.9 seconds, as well as a reach a terminal velocity of 186 mph. Carbon ceramic brakes, 20-inch wheels and a specially tuned chassis round out the hardware upgrades, while engineers compressed the car's dimensions to be shorter, wider and lower than a stock GTI.

The exterior of the Design Vision GTI is meant to evoke the future of GTI styling, which is fine by us as we especially like how the car's iconic C-pillar is pulled away from the body and flows into the significantly flared rear fenders. It looks like the reflection of a GTI in a circus mirror with menace-making bends. The interior, meanwhile, is an exercise in editing, with switches, knobs and all manner of unnecessary controls removed, and the center console more severely oriented towards the driver. The rear seats have been replaced by an X-shaped crossbar, and red straps appear where door handles used to be (à la Porsche). There's even a camera embedded in the A-pillar that can shoot either the track ahead or the driver at work.

While not as stout in the power or performance departments as the 2007 GTI W12 Concept, the Design Vision GTI looks even more the business than that King of Golfs. For now we only have renderings, but we'll update this post with live images of the Design Vision GTI as soon as they're available.
Continue reading VW debuts 503-hp Design Vision GTI at Wörthersee [w/video]

VW debuts 503-hp Design Vision GTI at Wörthersee [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 07 May 2013 21:27:00 EST.
The seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf is hardly new to us. In fact, we've already driven it. And elsewhere in the world, the new Golf is already winning awards. Even so, we still have yet to see the US-spec version of the car, though that won't be the case much longer. As part of the New York Auto Show festivities later this month, Volkswagen will finally show off the 2015 Golf models destined for our shores.

Three different versions of the Golf will debut under the lights of New York City's Javits Center: the turbocharged TSI, oil-sipping TDI and hotter GTI. The first model in that list uses Volkswagen's new 1.8-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine, replacing the outgoing 2.5-liter naturally aspirated inline five-cylinder. The latter two models use familiar engines: the 2.0-liter TDI diesel and 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, respectively.

Even though the new Golf officially debuts later this month, it won't go on sale in the US until the first quarter of 2014. We'll be waiting patiently.
Continue reading US-spec 2015 Volkswagen Golf and GTI to finally debut in New York

US-spec 2015 Volkswagen Golf and GTI to finally debut in New York originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 12 Mar 2013 13:44:00 EST.
There's torque steer and then there's what we'll from now on dub "The Boba," as in Boba Kettler. The German tuner has a way with the Volkswagen Golf, and the MkI example you see above has been touched with 736 horsepower - that's right, 96 more ponies than a new SRT Viper, all trying to get to ground through those two front wheels.

The 2.0-liter, 16-valve engine has an 8,800 rpm redline and is aided by a Garrett GTX3582R turbocharger shoving 50 psi through the internals. Other upgrades include a new ECU (natch) and a six-speed 'box among other treats. The rubber is Toyo R888s - street-legal competition tires. The result is enough smoke for three Chinese New Years when the lights go green. Indeed, the standing start isn't its forte, but it can apparently get from 62 miles per hour to 124 mph in five seconds.

Watch it go in the video below. And know that this isn't even Boba's best work; he's got a 900-hp MkII Golf that'll do 0-62 mph in 2.3 seconds.
Continue reading Witness this insane 736-hp VW Golf immolate its front tires

Witness this insane 736-hp VW Golf immolate its front tires originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 11 Mar 2013 14:58:00 EST.
The all-new seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf hasn't even launched here in the United States, but over in Geneva, we're already getting our first glimpse at the hotter GTI hatchback. The fancy new Mk VII Golf is already off to a healthy start with positive reviews in Europe, and we have no doubt that this next GTI will work hard to regain its title as king of the hot hatches.

The big news for this generation of GTI is that for the first time ever, Volkswagen is actually offering two different power grades for the model, both relying on the 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four. Standard cars pack 220 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, but an optional performance pack ups the horsepower number to 230. Hitting 60 miles per hour takes 6.5 seconds (6.4 with the performance pack) and top speed is quoted at 153 mph (or 155 with the performance kit). Volkswagen will continue to offer the GTI with both six-speed manual and dual-clutch transmissions.

On the visual front, the sub-3,000-pound GTI adds the usual bit of hot hatch aggression over the standard Golf, and those changes carry over to the interior with a flat-bottomed wheel and, of course, plaid seats. She's certainly a looker, and while some of us do find the new Golf's design to be a bit staid and evolutionary, the enhancements for the GTI indeed tug on our enthusiast heart strings.

European customers can purchase the 2014 GTI in May, and North American deliveries will likely start in about one year's time.

The upcoming Geneva Motor Show is going to be stocked with important new production models and sexy concept cars, but hot hatch enthusiasts will undoubtedly see it as the coming out party of the MkVII Volkswagen GTI. And while we've only got European specifications and pricing to go on for now, we can tell from the get-go that the new GTI will be a proper heir to VW's hot hatch legacy.

This seventh-generation GTI is powered by a turbocharged, direct-injection 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, which makes 220 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque in base form. For the first time ever, Volkswagen is also offering a performance pack for the GTI as well, which ups the horsepower to 230 (torque remains unchanged). With a slightly lower curb weight to push around - the new base car weighs 2,978 pounds versus 3,034 for the current three-door GTI - 0-62 miles per hour is now achieved in 6.5 seconds, and top speed is 153 mph. (Cars with the performance pack offer 0-62 mph in 6.4 seconds, and a 155-mph top speed.) Buyers may choose between a six-speed manual transmission or an optional six-speed DSG unit.

Visually, the new GTI has obviously adopted the slant-nosed looks of the MkVII Golf, though with plenty of added drama. The exterior is dominated by the 17-inch "Brooklyn" wheels wearing 225-section rubber, and the aggressive front fascia gets black honeycombed inserts in the upper and lower grille sections. At launch, Volkswagen will offer the GTI in three colors: the Pure White seen here, Tornado Red and Black. Tartan patterned seats are of course still an option for the interior, while the GTI-specific steering wheel and shift knob are standard.

The new car is set to go on sale in Europe in May of this year, with an asking price of 28,350 euros to start. North American timing and pricing are still up in the air, however. There's a bit more information about the 2014 Volkswagen GTI in the press release below for your perusal. Expect plenty more in the way of information and images when we see the car live at Geneva, too.
Continue reading 2014 Volkswagen GTI to start a new hot hatch era in Geneva

2014 Volkswagen GTI to start a new hot hatch era in Geneva originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 26 Feb 2013 18:00:00 EST.
The seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf hasn't launched in the United States just yet, but we're already setting our sights on the range-topping R model. According to Autocar, the next Golf R will be more powerful than the current version, producing 268 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, making it the most powerful production Golf ever.

Powering the new Golf R will be a further evolution of Volkswagen's well-liked 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four, and when mated to a six-speed dual-clutch transmission, the hotter hatch will reportedly be able to sprint to 62 miles per hour in five seconds flat. That's over half a second quicker than the current US-spec model.

Other updates for the new Golf R include the addition of VW's Haldex 5 all-wheel-drive system found in the latest iteration of 4Motion. Furthermore, thanks to the use of lightweight materials, the new R is expected to weigh in around 2,650 pounds - that's a massive 675 pounds less than the current US-spec car. The exhaust has reportedly been reworked to provide more aural delight, as well.

Herein lies the rub, though: It's unclear whether or not Volkswagen will offer this same power upgrade in the States. After all, the current US-spec Golf R is rated at 256 hp and 243 lb-ft while its Euro counterpart produces 270 hp and 258 lb-ft. What's more, European versions can be had with the delicious six-speed DSG, whereas US models are only available with the six-speed manual 'box. Volkswagen's US arm tells Autoblog that since the car is still so far off, "there is no final decision" on whether our car will be identical to the Euro model.

Autocar reports that the Euro-spec Golf R will make its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show this September, with the first cars hitting the streets of Europe in early 2014.
Next Volkswagen Golf R to get 286 horsepower? originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 12 Feb 2013 14:01:00 EST.
The Volkswagen booth at this year's Chicago Auto Show was filled with various special edition models of the Beetle and GTI. In addition to the GTI Wolfsburg Edition, the Volkswagen GTI Driver's Edition helps to wrap up the 2013 model year as VW readies the all-new MkVII Golf next year.

Only 3,000 of the GTI Driver's Edition models will be produced in four-door body style only, and the available color palette will be limited to just Candy White, Carbon Steel Gray and Deep Black. The package will come standard with the GTI's Sunroof and Navigation package, and it will add unique features such as the 18-inch "Laguna" wheels, a golf-ball shift knob, partial leather seats and red-stitching on the carpeted floor mats. Buyers of this package will also get a certificate of authenticity and some GTI swag such as a hat, keychain and parking sign.

Starting price for the 2013 Volkswagen GTI Driver's Edition is $29,695 with the six-speed manual and $30,795 if you choose the DSG - both prices exclude destination charges.

The press release for both limited-edition GTI models is posted after the jump.
Continue reading 2013 Volkswagen GTI Driver's Edition brings exclusivity to the granddaddy of hot hatches

2013 Volkswagen GTI Driver's Edition brings exclusivity to the granddaddy of hot hatches originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 07 Feb 2013 17:30:00 EST.
Volkswagen has chosen to really expand its performance-tuned portfolio at this year's Chicago Auto Show, bringing along a couple of new Beetles destined for model year 2014, as well as a pair of freshened GTI packages that you'll be able to buy almost right away.

The first, and splashiest of the Chicago goodies on the VW stand has got to be the 2014 Volkswagen Beetle GSR. Don't lose your temper, Acura Integra geeks; in this case, GSR stands for "Gelb Schwarzer Renner" or "Yellow Black Racer," and harkens back to a sport-tuned classic Beetle from the 1970s. For the 2014 iteration, the GSR gets a 210-horsepower version of VW's 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder. That engine is enough to push the Beetle to 60 miles per hour in 6.6 seconds, and up to a top speed of 130 mph.

Of course, you'll have long-since noticed the shockingly yellow-and-black livery before you stumble across the Turbo badge on the rear deck. The GSR gets 19-inch alloy wheels, 235-section tires and a tea-tray rear spoiler, but it's the paint and graphics package that will decide if this is your (lemony) cup of tea. Things don't get any subtler inside the car, either, as VW has carried the colorway through to the interior, as well. Only 3,500 Beetle GSRs will be produced, with just more than half of those going to the US - call your dealer today, Wiz Khalifa.

Slightly less racy than the GSR is another Beetle for Chicago; this time a Volkswagen Beetle Convertible with the R-Line package. Almost identical to the standard Beetle Convertible Turbo from a functional standpoint, the 2014 R-Line car gets some unique 19-inch aluminum wheels with lower profile tires, LED DRLs to augment Bi-Xenon headlamps and trim-specific badging. You'll also find R-Line branding sprinkled through the cabin of the car, and a model which is fully kitted out with technology options.

Finally, VW is offering a couple of limited edition GTI models to close out the 2013 model year (yes, we know it's February). There'll be just 3,000 examples of the Volkswagen GTI Driver's Edition produced, all of them offering new 18-inch wheels, a golf ball shifter knob for the six-speed manual and the sunroof and navigation packages from the normal GTI spec sheet. A Wolfsburg Edition car will make a similar offering, but without the navi and sunroof. The Wolfsburg GTI will start from $25,095 in 6MT trim, while the rarer Driver's Edition will run $29,695 with the stick shift.

Check out press releases for all of these vehicles below, and stay tuned as we bring you all of the live action from the Chicago show floor.
Continue reading Volkswagen reveals Beetle GSR, R-Line convertible and two special GTIs

Volkswagen reveals Beetle GSR, R-Line convertible and two special GTIs originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 07 Feb 2013 01:01:00 EST.
Hagerty Insurance, which specializes in covering cars already deemed classics, is out with its annual Hot List predicting this year's ten cars that will be future collectibles. Even though it stays under $100,000, it spans almost $74,000 in MSRPs starting with the $23,700 Ford Focus ST on the affordable end and peaking with the $97,395 SRT Viper.

Other notables include the Chevrolet Corvette Convertible 427, what with 2013 being both the 60th anniversary of the brand and the last year of the C6, the 505-horsepower 427 special edition being a send-off to the sports car that always does well in the last model year of a particular generation. The Tesla Model S collects yet another award for delivering a welcome and overdue shock to the electric-car game and is the only sedan to make the list, and the Subaru BRZ also adds to its trophy chest, the lightweight coupe doing so much with so little that it might be worth a packet after Father Time has waved his staff a few times.

Forgive us for having the distinct feeling of déjà vu, but it certainly feels like we've been here before. By that we are referring Car and Driver and the announcement of its annual 10Best vehicles for 2013. To be sure, it's an impressive selection of cars that combine heart-pounding performance and frugal sensibilities, but it also represents something of a broken record on the part of C/D. We're not so sure that's a flaw, though, as the resulting list is tough to argue with.

Vehicles like the Ford Mustang, Porsche Boxster, and BMW 3 Series have maintained their high-horsepower spots on this list for several years now. Even on the more practical and nimble end, the Honda Accord, Honda Fit and Mazda Miata have not budged. These continued spots are even in light of redesigns for some vehicles such as the Accord, Boxster and 3 Series.

In fact, the only newcomer to the 10Best list this year are the Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ twins, which knocked out the Cadillac CTS-V. We think it would have been a huge misstep to have excluded the FR-S/BRZ, even in light of the supercharged Caddy's lamentable departure from 10Best.

Without further ado, here are 2012 Car and Driver 10Best winners:

This week's Los Angeles Auto Show plays host to the coming out party for the 2013 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible, which once again gives the German automaker a pair of four-seat convertibles clustered within striking distance of each other's price ranges. That won't be the case for long, however, as the recently refreshed Eos folding hardtop convertible won't get a successor.

The handwriting has been on the wall for the slow-selling model, which is priced above the new Beetle droptop, starting at $34,350 despite offering a similar powertrain to the Beetle Turbo, which rings up at $27,795 (base 2.5-liter Beetle Convertibles start at $24,495). Through October, Volkswagen has managed to sell just 5,529 Eos units, down 17.8 percent over 2011. This, despite a modest facelift and equipment updates for the 2012 model year. At the same time that the Eos was getting freshened, VW introduced the similarly sized and similar looking Golf Cabriolet for Europe, which despite folding hardtop construction, seemingly obviated the Eos' business case. The Cabriolet subsequently spawned GTI and R variants, giving the model further momentum and appeal.

Klaus Bischoff, Volkswagen's head of global design, did not tell Autoblog when the Eos will be phased out - VW has already released a 2013 model - but he did confirm that a replacement is not in the cards. However, Bischoff did express clear support for the idea of bringing the Golf Cabriolet to North America, as well as the GTI Convertible.
Volkswagen Eos won't be replaced, Golf Cabriolet possible? originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 29 Nov 2012 15:00:00 EST.
About three years ago to the day, fellow Senior Editor Seyth Miersma and I - during our respective tenures as editors at Winding Road - met on a cold, wet autumn morning to put the then-new sixth-generation Volkswagen GTI up against a slew of hot hatches for a comparison test cover story. Miersma and I share a love for this type of car, simply because they're affordable little runabouts that don't skimp on functionality while being hysterically fun to toss about. Actually, you'd be hard pressed to find a single member of the automotive media that doesn't hold at least one of these little rascals close to their heart.

If you want to dethrone the king, you have to beat the GTI at the very game it created.

The hot hatch hierarchy has long been capped with the GTI as king, and for good reason. Of all the vehicles offered in the segment, it has perhaps the best blend of the many facets we love about these cars, and it's the one that we'd absolutely open our wallets for year after year, generation after generation. So when a new kid comes to town, it doesn't completely matter how it stacks up against other competitors in the segment - if you want to dethrone the king, you have to beat the GTI at the very game it created.

Enter the 2013 Ford Focus ST, a car that Ford says will run circles around every other hot hatch available in the United States. The Blue Oval is out for blood with this one, and for good reason. After our first experience with the car overseas, we must admit, it's damn good.

So on yet another cold autumn morning, I found myself sitting behind the wheel of the brand-new Focus ST, following Miersma in the GTI out to the same roads we've flogged hot hatches down in the past. History indeed has a way of repeating itself, but with the potent little Ford now in its class, does the GTI still hold onto its crown?
Continue reading 2013 Ford Focus ST vs. 2012 Volkswagen GTI

2013 Ford Focus ST vs. 2012 Volkswagen GTI originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 20 Nov 2012 11:58:00 EST.
The fortunes of Volkswagen in the United States are moving steadily upward in direct correlation to how serious Wolfsburg has become about our market, a market it frankly neglected badly for about three full decades. The era of neglect is over now and the Germans are focusing especially hard on North American drivers who may have never owned a VW.

For many in the US, a first Volkswagen will be either a Jetta or Passat, both of which have pretty good trunks. But we just drove this all-new seventh generation Golf and it needs to be on that same consideration list because it is a nearly perfect, sensibly sized trunkless car.

The numbers for the Golf since its invention in 1974 are staggering. By the start of 2013, the Golf (called Rabbit for many of those bleakest years here in the States) will have sold nearly 30 million units worldwide. The Golf Mk VI, which is still offered in many markets including the US, remains the dominant best-selling car in all of Europe at the end of its life cycle. VW didn't really need to update much to keep the sales ball rolling.
Continue reading 2014 Volkswagen Golf [w/video]

2014 Volkswagen Golf [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 07 Nov 2012 11:57:00 EST.
Ken Block and Vaughn Gittin, Jr. are two of the masters of artistically abusing automobiles, so you know a video with both men in it is going to be a good one. In the fourth installment of the Focus ST Sessions series from Ford, Gittin and Block are given the keys to a 2013 Focus ST and a Volkswagen GTI, and then let loose in an abandoned neighborhood.

While the stunts in this video are nowhere near what either man is capable of performing in their respective racecars, it is essentially a two-minute-long Ford commercial showing the Focus ST's advantages over VW's standard bearer for the hot hatch class. The two cars tear through the deserted streets, allowing the Focus ST to show its strong off-the-line acceleration and slaloming ability through some construction barrels.

It's a pretty predictable video but still amusing to watch, so be sure to check it out below.
Continue reading Ken Block and Vaughn Gittin Jr. race Focus ST and GTI through abandoned neighborhood

Ken Block and Vaughn Gittin Jr. race Focus ST and GTI through abandoned neighborhood originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 31 Oct 2012 08:59:00 EST.
We're something of a broken record on Volkswagen's TDI family of diesels - torquey and efficient, they're really well-suited to the way Americans drive. We put that sentiment to a year-long test with a Jetta TDI Cup Street Edition not long ago, and enjoyed our time in what was basically an oil-burning GTI with a trunk. That is, until an unsolved catastrophic engine failure saw VW yank it away after just eight months. They subsequently replaced our Cup Street with a bog-standard Jetta TDI (in the new A6 generation), but the thrill was gone.

Judging by our brief time with this Kermit Metallic, not-for-North-America Golf GTD - essentially a diesel GTI - we think we could learn to love again. And given that Volkswagen is freely handing this hatchback out to journalists in the States, we can say that there's some truth to the rumors that executives want to bring the next-gen model to the U.S. in 2014. We're ready when you are, VW...

Driving Notes:

Our old Jetta Cup Street had all of the sporty fixins' of the GLI, from its aero kit and firmed-up suspension to its more supportive plaid seats - but it still relied on the standard 140-horsepower, 236 pound-foot 2.0-liter diesel found in every other Jetta TDI. Not the GTD. Tweaks to the ECU programming take advantage of a different intake, new injectors, exhaust and a modified turbocharger to net 170 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. That puts it down an even 30 horses on a comparable GTI, but up 51 lb-ft.

As a result, the GTD is plenty quick, but it's plainly a bit more reluctant with throttle response than the gas GTI, with a 0-60 time of about eight seconds. Despite this, it's good fun, with great passing power.

VW seems to have done a better job disguising the GTD's diesel clatter than what I remember of our long-term Jetta TDIs.

The DSG dual-clutch gearbox probably matches the diesel's narrow rev-band better than a manual. Still, we're dying to find out if the clutch feel of the stick shift is better than on our recently departed Jetta TDI which was, to be polite, dreadful.

Though there's no EPA guidance on this car since it isn't sold here, the 2013 Golf TDI with DSG nets 30/42 mpg ratings, and our brief drive time suggests that the GTD wouldn't be far afield from those numbers. The 2013 GTI rings up 24/33, so there's a huge difference. It's worth noting that we've observed similar-to-EPA numbers in other TDIs even while working them fairly hard, something we can't say for their gas equivalents. Range is huge, too.

It's hard for us to compare handling to the standard GTI, because our test car was fitted with non-U.S. optional adaptive damping. It delivered a good balance of immediacy and ride comfort, but so does the standard GTI - we'd just assume do without the added cost and complexity.

Pictures just don't adequately express how shockingly green this paint is. It's not for everyone, but we got compliments and absolutely love it. Let's hope VW brings it over, even on the standard GTI.

How can we tell this isn't a U.S. model just by sitting inside? The cupholder features a removable bottle opener. You know, for mineralwasser.

A 2013 VW GTI starts at $23,995, so we're guessing you'd want to add a couple grand to the base price for a GTD.

Way back in 2004, Volkswagen took umbrage with Suzuki being granted permission to use the nameplate "SWIFT GTi" for a performance variant of its small-car offering (2012 equivalent seen here). Now, eight years and surely some very steep legal bills later, VW has finally dropped its claim against Suzuki.

The General Court of the European Union stated, back in March of this year, that Suzuki's GTi registration could not be confused with VW's "Golf GTI." Volkswagen had appealed that ruling, though has now reportedly called off the dogs. In fact, Germany's Die Welt reports that the appeal has been dead for several weeks now.

This news comes amongst continued arbitration acrimony between the two automakers, all revolving around VW's forced divestiture of nearly 20-percent stake it purchased in Suzuki some two years ago.
Volkswagen drops "GTi" lawsuit against Suzuki originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 02 Oct 2012 08:45:00 EST.
If you're looking for thinly veiled production models from the 2012 Paris Motor Show, Volkswagen has you covered. The German automaker showed off its GTI Concept alongside a smattering of other Golf variants.

A prototype in name only, the concept gives us a glimpse of what the MkVII GTI will bring to the table in terms of aesthetics. Volkswagen says the next-gen GTI will boast an 18-percent bump in fuel efficiency, which could see the sports hatch top 36 miles per gallon highway on the U.S. scale. Not too shabby, especially given the machine should retain its turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine.

Volkswagen has also rummaged up a few extra ponies, as the company claims the MkVII will dish out around 217 horsepower, a 17-horse nudge over the current generation. Expect more solid numbers to surface closer to the production model's actual debut. In the interim, peruse our gallery of live images above and the official press release below.
Continue reading Volkswagen GTI Concept is ready to carry the hot hatch torch

Volkswagen GTI Concept is ready to carry the hot hatch torch originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 27 Sep 2012 12:31:00 EST.
Following the debut of the new Mark VII Golf, Volkswagen is set to pull the wraps off of a new GTI Concept at the Paris Motor Show. Though its time in the hot lights is less than a day away, that hasn't stopped the likes of AutoBild from dropping some freshly leaked images of the hot hatch design study on the interwebs.

The "near-production" concept preceding the roadgoing model is a practice that follows suit from the previous GTI debut at Paris in 2008. AutoBild is claiming that the new GTI will feature a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four making 217 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque routed to the buyer's choice of a six-speed manual or DSG dual-clutch gearbox. The German magazine is also saying that there will be an optional performance package that boosts output to 227 hp. 0 to 62 mph is pegged at 6.6 seconds with a top speed of 153 mph in the standard iteration, while the performance package model is said to make the run in 6.5 seconds, topping out at 155.

While the concept features a bevy of traditional GTI hallmark including a plaid interior and black grille with red pinstriping, the concept extends the red line across the headlights in novel fashion. The concept also features Testarrosa-rific gills as part of the lower front valence (we'll have to wait to see in person to see how we feel about 'em).

Inside, the GTI Concept seems ready to hit the road, with touchscreen navigation, pushbutton start and red stitching on the steering wheel and shift boot.

Though the interior looks very production-ready, only time will tell if the roadgoing version of this iconic performance hatchback looks exactly like what you see here.
Volkswagen GTI design study images show up ahead of Paris reveal originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 26 Sep 2012 10:57:00 EST.
We're waiting to see the genuine Mk VII Volkswagen Golf in the steel so that people can decide which side of the fence they're on regarding its design, but we're pretty sure the Golf R will, as usual, improve upon it. A prototype of the hot version of VW's hatch was spotted in a wild camo party dress a few weeks ago, and now the snappers at CarPix have caught it again without the camo and in basic black.

The adjustments we'd expect are there, in unfinished form, such as the larger intakes in front and quad pipes in back, and the cruise-control radar gets a prominent spot in the middle of the lower intake. The all-black low-profile routine certainly ups the stealth quotient, and perhaps it's just our eyes, but the five-door seen here doesn't look as intense as the outgoing model. We'll know for sure when we get a look at it at the Paris Motor Show later this month. In the meantime, there's a high-res gallery of spy shots to enjoy.
Next Golf R sheds lots of camo, still looks stealthy originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 12 Sep 2012 14:32:00 EST. Dubbed "Carbon GTI," the model is said to make use of a range of new manufacturing techniques to incorporate a heap of carbon fiber and aluminum wherever possible. Pieces like the bulkhead, windshield frame and floor panels are all expected to be hammered from lightweight alloy while the hood and roof will be stitched from the composite. All told, the changes should shave around 440 pounds from the chassis, resulting in a curb weight in the neighborhood of 2,480 pounds.

Word has it VW will leave the drivetrain untouched from the upcoming Mark VII GTI, which means buyers can expect to find the same turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine under the hood good for around 222 horsepower (the 2012 model makes do with an even 200 horses). Even so, the Weight Watchers treatment should help the Carbon GTI slim its 0-60 dash to below six seconds.

The model may be a test platform for manufacturing techniques that Volkswagen plans to employ on the next-generation Audi MLB platform. The German automaker will likely spread the cost of developing the machine across greener Golf iterations, including a hybrid and an electric model.
Volkswagen cooking up lightweight Carbon GTI originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 11 Sep 2012 15:30:00 EST.
