<em><strong><small>Shelby GT500KR - Click above for high-res image gallery</small></strong></em></div>
<br />
When we drove the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/05/01/first-drive-2008-shelby-gt500kr-part-2/">Shelby GT500KR at Miller Motorsports Park</a> last May, we were impressed with the steps that Ford and Shelby had taken to make its new King of the Road a special vehicle. Not only was the KR a huge improvement over the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/shelby+gt500">GT500</a> (which led to the development of the 2010 GT500), but the car featured trick items like a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/gallery/first-drive-2008-shelby-gt500kr-part-2/#16">carbon fiber hood</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/gallery/first-drive-2008-shelby-gt500kr-part-2/#22">lightweight wheels</a> wrapped with R-compound tires. At that time, Shelby also proudly told us that none of the KR-specific parts would be available for sale separately to ensure that owners of lesser Mustangs could not make shadetree replicas that might compromise the KR's image. Of course, all of this exclusivity and performance came at a price: $79,995 to be exact. <br />
<br />
<div style="border: 0px dotted black; margin: 5px; padding: 2px 3px; color: rgb(153, 0, 0); line-height: 120%; font-size: 1.5em; float: right; width: 220px; text-align: center;"><strong>$18,400 for a new hood, $3,392.50 for a front spoiler, and $632.50 for a set of hood pins</strong></div>
Unfortunately, as one GT500KR owner has learned the hard way, replacement parts for this pony car can be surprisingly dear. After an unfortunate incident with a critter on the road resulted in a modestly damaged front end, the owner in question was shocked to learn about the high cost of his vehicle's replacement parts. And as is increasingly the way these days, he aired his displeasure on the web. That initial report has since touched off a firestorm in the online Shelby community, with the issue spreading to numerous forums and chat rooms. <br />
<br />
So just why were these replacement parts such a contentious issue? In the main, it's a numbers thing. As in $18,400 for a new hood, $3,392.50 for a front spoiler, and even $632.50 for a set of hood pins, among other things. Further, the disgruntled owner informed a forum member that Shelby requires any damaged KR parts to be returned to their facility in Las Vegas before new replacements can be sent out. <br />
<br />
Obviously, a bit of due diligence was needed to verify the claimed replacement pricing and parts return policy, so we got on the phone with Jim Owens, vice president of marketing and communications at Shelby to get the straight scoop. Click through to the jump to hear what we learned.<br />

As was the case during the pilot that aired back in February, I'll be on my couch with my laptop, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/02/17/knight-rider-the-liveblog/">liveblogging</a> the proceedings and adding much-needed "perspective" each week, right until the show's cancellation. Maybe you couldn't care less about the liveblog, though. Or maybe you're just a glutton for punishment. If that's the case, you're in luck -- the Peacock is posting the season premiere online at NBC.com and Hulu.com on September 17, a week <em>before </em>the network broadcast. I'm gonna pass on the sneak peek, because I don't want want to taint my initial reaction to KITT's <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/07/25/new-kitt-attack-mode-revealed-at-comic-con/">new Attack Mode</a> (above). That, I'm saving for you guys. Mark your calendars. In the meantime, I'll watch <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/02/video-autoblog-playing-with-kitt-having-too-much-fun/2#comments">this</a> again instead. <br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/the-new-kitt-official-photos/low/">The new KITT - OFFICIAL PHOTOS</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/the-new-kitt-official-photos/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/f-150_walltoplightrendering3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/the-new-kitt-official-photos/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/dsc00007_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/the-new-kitt-official-photos/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/screenshot_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/the-new-kitt-official-photos/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/02/knightrider_deadfront_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/the-new-kitt-official-photos/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/02/knightrider_34front_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/News/articleId=131742">Inside Line</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/06/i-knight-rider-i-premiering-online-sept-17th-a-week-before/"><i>Knight Rider</i> premiering online Sept. 17th, a week before broadcast</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Sat, 06 Sep 2008 14:41:00 EST. <p>There's horsepower, and then there's dyno-tested, can't-lie-to-your-friends horsepower. If you want to know how much power a car really makes, you've got to strap it to a dyno and spin it to redline. The guys over at <em>5.0 Mustang &amp; Super Fords</em> are always eager to find the true horsepower of a car, and so when they took delivery of a GT500KR to review they headed straight to the dyno to see how much power the supercharged V8 is putting out. What they found was somewhat surprising -- the KR produced 509 horsepower and 467.7 lb.-ft. torque to the wheels. Adjusting for an estimated driveline loss of 15 percent, the actual output at the flywheel is 589.82 hp and 550.24 lb-ft torque -- nearly 50 more horsepower and 40 more lb-ft than Ford is claiming. Take that Z06!</p>

<p>When Ford announced the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/05/01/ford-mustang-gt500kr-priced-at-79-995/">GT500KR's based price of $79,995</a>, many of you thought that it was pretty steep for a Mustang. Even though it's a limited edition Shelby with 540 horsepower, $80,000 can buy a lot of really nice cars. What's even more insane is that we know people will not only buy the KR, but they will pay tens of thousands of dollars over MSRP just to have one. The only question was how much dealers would try and gouge. That question has been answered. Lone Star Ford in Houston, TX has put up a red GT500KR on eBay Motors with a "Buy It Now" price of...$154,991.00. That's nearly double the MSRP. Who knows if anyone will actually buy it at that price, but going off what happened with the standard GT500, then it's quite possible. While we enjoyed our first drive in the GT500KR (check out <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/04/28/first-drive-2008-shelby-gt500kr-part-1/">Part 1</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/04/28/first-drive-2008-shelby-gt500kr-part-1/">Part 2</a>), we can think of quite a few cars we'd rather have for $150,000. </p>

For $79,995 (including destination and gas-guzzler tax), you get everything included in the "standard" GT500, plus Ford Racing's Power Upgrade Package, which includes a new exhaust and a recalibrated ECU to push out 540 hp and 510 lb.-ft. of torque from the supercharged 5.4-liter V8. The only options on the ordering form are a Shaker 1000 stereo, Sirius satellite radio and a navigation system. Ford hasn't disclosed fuel economy numbers yet, but we doubt anyone willing to drop $80k on a blown V8 is troubled by topping off their own KR with $4.00-a-gallon premium. <p> </p>
<p>Our <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/04/28/first-drive-2008-shelby-gt500kr-part-1/">initial drive of the Shelby GT500KR on public roads</a> revealed that Ford, SVT and Shelby had addressed many of the issues that we had with the standard GT500. The KR's revised suspension is better balanced and more capable of handling the excessive amounts of horsepower and torque that the blown 5.4L generates, and a new short-throw Hurst shifter makes changing gears a joy instead of a chore. To top it all off, a Ford Racing cold air intake, new exhaust system, and 3.73 gears give the KR an extra kick in the pants. The changes were so spot-on that we wondered why Ford didn't build the GT500 this way in the first place. </p>
<p>With a ride like the GT500KR, however, only so much of the car can be experienced on public roads. At 540 horsepower and 510 lb-ft torque, the KR quickly reaches posted speed limits and the car stays well under its limits around corners. Fortunately, Ford let us loose to run hot laps around Miller Motorsports Park. Follow the jump to see how the "King of the Road" fared at the track.</p>

<p>I have to admit, the Shelby GT500 was somewhat of a letdown. I have no complaints about the 500 horsepower or the muscular lines, but at nearly 4,000 pounds, it's got a serious weight problem. The iron block, 5.4-liter V8 and the addition of a supercharger puts much the weight in the worst possible place -- the front -- so the GT500 feels unmotivated around the corners compared to a regular Mustang GT. Other complaints include a suspension that doesn't seem up to snuff to handle the prodigious power, as well as a vague and rubbery shifter. Despite its shortcomings, the GT500 is one of the world's best performance bargains. Never before has such a powerful car been available for so little cash (although the Ford dealers did a pretty good job of ruining its value with markups). Still, one couldn't help but think that the GT500 could have been better. </p>

The updated, Shelby Mustang-based KITT looked undeniably cool (when not in Ugly... er... Attack Mode, at least), but the acting was wooden and the writing was a horror show. Still, the ending completely set up a potential ongoing story. Today comes word that the ratings were apparently good enough for the suits to give a thumbs-up for a new weekly series starting this Fall. Early reports suggest a Friday night timeslot is in the works, but that's subject to change; all will be known on Wednesday when NBC presents its early upfronts.<br /><br />We'll assume that at the very least, stars Justin Breuning (Mike Traceur) and Deanna Russo (Mike Traceur's Girlfriend) will return to fill our flatscreens with emotionless line reading. And since voicing KITT should be a relatively easy payday for Val Kilmer, we'd expect him to reprise his role, as well. As for the Hoff, who walked on for a brief cameo at the end of the pilot, who knows? The big winner here is Ford, which now gets an hour-long weekly showcase for the Shelby GT500KR KITT. Based on the stupendously lousy pilot, however, we're going to put on our prognostication hats and set the over/under for this <em>Knight Rider</em> reboot at 10 episodes. Unless NBC ups the quality in a big, big way, the under is a lock. <br /><em><br />I am ordering Alex to live blog every single episode like he did <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/02/17/knight-rider-the-liveblog/">the pilot</a>, which probably won't be a long-term commitment considering. - John</em><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/the-new-kitt-official-photos/low/">The new KITT - OFFICIAL PHOTOS</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/the-new-kitt-official-photos/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/f-150_walltoplightrendering3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/the-new-kitt-official-photos/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/dsc00007_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/the-new-kitt-official-photos/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/screenshot_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/the-new-kitt-official-photos/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/02/knightrider_deadfront_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/the-new-kitt-official-photos/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/02/knightrider_34front_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Sources: <a href="http://www.aintitcool.com/node/36207">AICN</a> via <a href="http://forums.fark.com/cgi/fark/comments.pl?IDLink=3504759">FARK</a>, <a href="http://www.variety.com/VR1117983169.html">Variety</a>, <a href="http://tv.ign.com/articles/863/863318p1.html">IGN</a>, <a href="http://screenrant.com/archives/knight-rider-series-greenlit-b-1522.html">Screen Rant</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/03/31/nbc-greenlights-knight-rider-weekly-series/">NBC greenlights Knight Rider weekly series</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Mon, 31 Mar 2008 16:24:00 EST. The new Michael Knight played by <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1472010/">Justin Bruening</a> and his car companion KITT, voiced by <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/02/08/val-kilmer-to-voice-kitt-will-arnett-is-out/">Val Kilmer</a>, made <a href="http://jalopnik.com/356992/knight-rider-rides-again-on-the-today-show-now-with-added-hasselhoff">an appearance on the Today Show</a> this morning (disclaimer: the Today Show is also an NBC program) to promote the mini-movie that will eventually become a full series next fall. Bruening reveals a bit more about the story we'll be watching this Sunday, some of which we already knew and a few new bits. His character is playing the estranged son of the original Michael Knight, a role that will be reprised by David Hasselhoff himself in the movie, though the new Mike Knight is unaware the guy standing next to him with the same name is his dad. Bruening also reveals the loophole that supposedly fills in the 25-year gap between the original series and the new one, which is that the original writers never identified KITT's inventor. OK, well we'll have to see how that one plays out. Ford, meanwhile, which paid a pretty penny to have the GT500KR Mustang play the part of nuevo KITT, has released <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/the-new-kitt-official-photos/">three more photos</a> of the Knight Industries car, which make lovely desktop wallpaper backgrounds if you're a true fan. We'll decide our degree of fanboyosity after we watch the movie this weekend. <br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/the-new-kitt-official-photos/low/">The new KITT - OFFICIAL PHOTOS</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/the-new-kitt-official-photos/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/f-150_walltoplightrendering3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/the-new-kitt-official-photos/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/dsc00007_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/the-new-kitt-official-photos/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/screenshot_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/the-new-kitt-official-photos/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/02/knightrider_deadfront_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/the-new-kitt-official-photos/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/02/knightrider_34front_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://jalopnik.com/356992/knight-rider-rides-again-on-the-today-show-now-with-added-hasselhoff">Jalopnik</a>, Ford]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/02/15/knight-rider-promotion-shifts-into-high-gear/">Knight Rider promotion shifts into high gear</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Fri, 15 Feb 2008 11:57:00 EST. But lets not get ahead of ourselves. Before that can happen, the pilot needs to be a success, and we're as interested as everyone else in seeing what the network and executive producer <a href="http://imdb.com/name/nm0510731/">Doug Liman</a> have cooked up. Liman's body of work as a director and producer is <em><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117802/">so money</a> </em>that despite our fears, the <em>Knight Rider</em> reboot could actually work. <br /><br />Then again, based on some of what we've seen in the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/01/17/video-kitt-obviates-valet-parking-attendants/">commercials</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/01/09/video-nbc-releases-2-minute-knight-rider-preview/">promos</a> so far, it could just as easily wind up being a giant black hole of suck. On the upside, we expect to be entertained either way. The latest TV spot introduces us to KITT's new, raspier voice and magic disappearing shifter. If you have any issues watching the fancy-schmancy NBC embed above, the YouTube version's pasted after the jump. <br /><br />[Source: Knight Rider Online]<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/the-new-kitt-official-photos/low/">The new KITT - OFFICIAL PHOTOS</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/the-new-kitt-official-photos/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/f-150_walltoplightrendering3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/the-new-kitt-official-photos/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/dsc00007_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/the-new-kitt-official-photos/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/screenshot_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/the-new-kitt-official-photos/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/02/knightrider_deadfront_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/the-new-kitt-official-photos/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/02/knightrider_34front_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/02/10/video-newest-knight-rider-spot-drops/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>VIDEO: Newest <i>Knight Rider</i> spot arrives</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/02/10/video-newest-knight-rider-spot-drops/">VIDEO: Newest <i>Knight Rider</i> spot arrives</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Sun, 10 Feb 2008 10:31:00 EST. Yeah, that's not what happened. According to AdAge, Ford snagging the role of KITT had more to do with timing and a certain boat load of money that was exchanged hands. As we've explained before, Pontiac doesn't even have a car that would be suitable for the part of KITT, while the Camaro just wouldn't have been ready in time. Same goes for the Dodge Challenger. That leaves the Ford Mustang, which found a new way to enjoy its time without a competitor in sight by taking some acting lessons and landing the spot. Curiously, Jalopnik reports that the article, which isn't accessible without a subscription (natch) mentions that the Chrysler Crossfire was being considered. Not that it should have ever gotten the job, but Chrysler cancelled the Crossfire anyway. We're sure the Corvette was being considered, if for no other reason than it would have made as much sense in the role as the GT500KR, but we guess GM didn't think it was money well spent. Time will tell whether or not Ford's investment was a smart one.<br /><br />[Source: Adage via <a href="http://jalopnik.com/340660/how-kitt-become-a-mustang">Jalopnik</a>]<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/the-new-kitt-official-photos/low/">The new KITT - OFFICIAL PHOTOS</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/the-new-kitt-official-photos/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/f-150_walltoplightrendering3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/the-new-kitt-official-photos/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/dsc00007_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/the-new-kitt-official-photos/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/screenshot_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/the-new-kitt-official-photos/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/02/knightrider_deadfront_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/the-new-kitt-official-photos/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/02/knightrider_34front_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/01/04/report-ford-bought-mustang-the-role-of-kitt/">REPORT: Ford bought Mustang the role of KITT</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Fri, 04 Jan 2008 16:57:00 EST. Their answer was so simple and obvious that it bears repeating. A 500 HP SVT Mustang doesn't sell for $30,000 over invoice, but if you add Carroll Shelby's name to it, a killer car becomes an instant sensation. Much of the street cred Shelby currently has was earned during the 1960s, when Carroll took the Mustang from a "secretary's car" to a hot-rod pony car.<br /><br />Mr. Shelby is apparently too caught up living in the present to give much thought to what he did 40 years ago, as he plans on putting his 1969 Shelby GT500 convertible up for auction in January at <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/01/21/2007-barrett-jackson-scottsdale-first-shelby-gt/">Barrett Jackson</a>. The vintage hotrod, which has nearly 70,000 miles on the odometer, is sure to fetch quite a premium over an already valuable '69 owned by some lucky schlep. The great-looking collectible is powered by a 428 Cobra Jet engine and has recently undergone a restoration. If you want to get in on the bidding action, make sure to get a lean on your mortgage, or just show up rich. It's gonna fetch a bundle. The press release is available after the jump.<br /><br />[Source: Shelby via <a href="http://jalopnik.com/cars/barret_jackson/carroll-shelbys-personal-gt+500-to-be-auctioned-off-319967.php">Jalopnik</a>]<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/caroll-shelbys-1969-shelby-gt500/low/">Caroll Shelby's 1969 Shelby GT500</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/caroll-shelbys-1969-shelby-gt500/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/11/shelby-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/caroll-shelbys-1969-shelby-gt500/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/11/shelby-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/caroll-shelbys-1969-shelby-gt500/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/11/shelby-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/caroll-shelbys-1969-shelby-gt500/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/11/shelby-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/11/08/carroll-shelbys-personal-gt500-coming-to-barrett-jackson/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Carroll Shelby's personal GT500 coming to Barrett Jackson</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/11/08/carroll-shelbys-personal-gt500-coming-to-barrett-jackson/">Carroll Shelby's personal GT500 coming to Barrett Jackson</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 08 Nov 2007 09:33:00 EST. <p><em>Road &amp; Track </em>has given the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/04/27/another-one-seriously-shelby-and-ford-to-produce-gt500-super-s/">Shelby Super Snake</a> its very first thrashing, and the first impression is good. For $28,000 over the price of a GT500 KR (R&amp;T's as-tested price was <em>$70,670</em>), you get 50 more horses, two tenths taken off the 0-60, three tenths off the quarter and half a G more on the skidpad. You also get a lot of Shelby parts, Shelby build quality, Baer 6-piston stoppers, some carbon fiber body panels, and a juggernaut of a car that's still under the manufacturer warranty. </p>
<p>How's it drive? The Pirellis on the car apparently can't handle the power as well as <em>RT</em> would have liked, but what tire could? And Shelby is working on a stickier tire anyway. Outside of that, the verdict is yes. The car rips, roars, and snorts with all appropriate aplomb and vitesse. Speaking of roaring, <em>RT</em> does mention that conversations at speed can be challenging because of gear whine that causes 80 dBA of cacophony at 70 MPH. But the car does come with a 500-watt sound system, which should make enough noise to cancel that out. As if you'd really want to. Click the link to get the rest of the story.</p>

As we're all well aware, the car's actual rating <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/05/02/ford-shelby-gt500-lives-up-to-name-officially-rated-at-500hp/">wound up being 500</a>, and the rest, as they say, is history. Fast-forward to April 2007 in New York and the introduction of the further-Shelbyfied <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/04/04/new-york-auto-show-carroll-shelby-crowns-shelby-gt500kr-king-o/">GT500KR</a>, a hi-po version of the already monstrous GT500 that reaches into history and borrows the classic "KR" moniker. The GT500KR was announced as having 540 horses underneath its double-scooped, pinned-shut, carbon-composite hood, meaning it would be more adept at immolating tires than the GT500, whose talent in this department is unassailable. <br /><br />Last week, Carroll Shelby paid a visit to Ford's proving grounds in Dearborn, where the GT500KR prototype was among the cars being flogged and photographed. According to Mustang fansite <a href="http://www.stangsunleashed.com/index.php?categoryid=33&amp;p2_articleid=200">StangsUnleashed</a>, it was there that Ford announced the KR would receive an additional 10 horsepower over what had already been confirmed, giving the car a grand total of 550. And then, enthusiasts and tire manufacturers wept with joy.<br /><br />[Source: StangsUnleashed]<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/carroll-shelby-w-gt500kr-prototype/low/">Carroll Shelby w/ GT500KR Prototype</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/carroll-shelby-w-gt500kr-prototype/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/09/cshelby_kr_hi008_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/carroll-shelby-w-gt500kr-prototype/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/09/cshelby_kr_hi007_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/carroll-shelby-w-gt500kr-prototype/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/09/cshelby_kr_hi006_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/carroll-shelby-w-gt500kr-prototype/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/09/cshelby_kr_hi005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/carroll-shelby-w-gt500kr-prototype/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/09/cshelby_kr_hi004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/new-york-auto-show-2008-shelby-gt500kr/low/">2008 Shelby GT500KR</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/new-york-auto-show-2008-shelby-gt500kr/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/03/mustanggt500kr_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/new-york-auto-show-2008-shelby-gt500kr/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/03/mustanggt500kr_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/new-york-auto-show-2008-shelby-gt500kr/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/03/mustanggt500kr_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/new-york-auto-show-2008-shelby-gt500kr/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/03/mustanggt500kr_04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/new-york-auto-show-2008-shelby-gt500kr/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/03/mustanggt500kr_05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/09/16/shelby-gt500kr-now-rated-at-550-hp/">Shelby GT500KR now rated at 550 HP?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Sun, 16 Sep 2007 08:01:00 EST. Starting it off is some analysis of the 430HP <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/04/27/2008-chevy-corvette-revealed-with-new-6-2l-ls3-v8-and-up-to-436/">LS3 Corvette</a>, which we were lucky enough to see unveiled in Bowling Green, KY. 430 horses in the base car...nice. Speaking of rear-wheel-drive sports cars, there's yet another special Mustang, the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/04/27/another-one-seriously-shelby-and-ford-to-produce-gt500-super-s/">Super Snake</a>. It's upper limit of 725 horsepower has instantly rendered the GT500KR that debuted in New York totally irrelevant. Wake us up when the rollouts of special Mustangs are over. *Yawn* Of course, we still manage to talk about some hot 'Stangs for a few minutes. We wrap the whole deal up with the new <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/04/30/you-ready-for-a-v8-powered-rwd-coupe-from-hyundai/">Hyundai coupe</a> based on the Genesis sedan's architecture. Whether it's the new Tiburon (finally a contender?), we don't know. Nor do we know if the rendering we've seen is anywhere near accurate, but Hyundai's continuing with their aggressive push, so we'll see where it leads. It's a tight 27 minutes this week, so enjoy!<br /><br /><a href="http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=73331469&amp;s=http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=73331469&amp;s=http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=73331469&amp;s=http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=73331469&amp;s=http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=73331469&amp;s=http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=73331469&amp;s=http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=73331469&amp;s=http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=73331469&amp;s=http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=73331469&amp;s=http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=73331469&amp;s="><strong>SUBSCRIBE</strong></a> to the Autoblog Podcast in iTunes<br /><a href="http://stadium.weblogsinc.com/autoblog/podcasts/auto20070502_0064.mp3"><strong>LISTEN</strong></a> to the show now<br /><a href="http://podcasts.autoblog.com/rss.xml"><strong>ADD</strong></a> the Autoblog Podcast feed to your RSS aggregator<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/05/03/autoblog-podcast-64/">Autoblog Podcast #64</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 03 May 2007 11:01:00 EST. Shelby did elaborate a bit, however, on how the KR designation originally came to be back in 1968 - it seems that the Texan got word that GM was planning on using the moniker for a big-block Corvette but had not yet registered it as a trademark. Shelby kicked his lawyer into gear, placed a call to 3M to get "GT500KR" badges on the way, and a few calls to his factory clarified that week's production plan. Back in those days, legends were born with a lot less red tape. <br /><br />Check out our gallery and video of the press introduction, and take a gander at the rest of our <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/04/04/new-york-auto-show-debuts-and-galleries/">New York Auto Show</a> coverage while you're at it!<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/new-york-auto-show-2008-shelby-gt500kr/low/">2008 Shelby GT500KR</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/new-york-auto-show-2008-shelby-gt500kr/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/03/mustanggt500kr_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/new-york-auto-show-2008-shelby-gt500kr/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/03/mustanggt500kr_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/new-york-auto-show-2008-shelby-gt500kr/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/03/mustanggt500kr_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/new-york-auto-show-2008-shelby-gt500kr/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/03/mustanggt500kr_04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/new-york-auto-show-2008-shelby-gt500kr/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/03/mustanggt500kr_05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/04/04/new-york-auto-show-carroll-shelby-crowns-shelby-gt500kr-king-o/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>New York Auto Show: Carroll Shelby crowns Shelby GT500KR "King of the Road"</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/04/04/new-york-auto-show-carroll-shelby-crowns-shelby-gt500kr-king-o/">New York Auto Show: Carroll Shelby crowns Shelby GT500KR "King of the Road"</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Wed, 04 Apr 2007 13:29:00 EST. The first one in a series of 500 will be auctioned off with proceeds going to the Carroll Shelby Children's Foundation. While we're sure Ford wanted to keep it a secret until the weekend, Car and Driver is reporting that Ford will debut the 2008 Ford Mustang Shelby KR at the New York Auto Show next week, leading us to believe this Shelby special edition will be the one on sale at Barrett-Jackson this weekend. <br /><br />The original KR dates back to 1968, when a special edition of the '68 GT500 was sold as "King of the Road", complete with a set of extra flared nostrils. The new model, according to C&amp;D, will unfortunately not feature a version of the long awaited "Boss" motor that's slated to become a HEMI-killa in the Ford lineup. Not much else is known about the Mustang Shelby KR, except that it will likely feature a honkin' pair of intakes on the hood. Here's hoping they're functional and not just for show. <br /><br />While we're happy the mystery Mustang isn't something so expected as a Shelby GT Convertible, which was our guess, we're a little disappointed it's not the Bullitt edition, too.<br /><br />Thanks for the tip, Drew!<br /><br />[Source: Car and Driver]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/03/29/new-york-preview-mystery-mustang-is-shelby-kr/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>New York Preview: Mystery Mustang is Shelby KR</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/03/29/new-york-preview-mystery-mustang-is-shelby-kr/">New York Preview: Mystery Mustang is Shelby KR</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 29 Mar 2007 07:42:00 EST.
