<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/shelby/">Shelby American</a> has made its name tuning various <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/">Ford</a> products, and now the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/focus+st/">Focus ST</a> can be added to this list. Just introduced at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/detroit-auto-show/">Detroit Auto Show</a>, the Shelby Focus ST doesn't add any extra horsepower under the hood, but it should still make sizable gains in performance thanks to an upgraded suspension, brakes and exhaust systems. Also on hand at the Shelby display was a widebody version of the powerful <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/shelby+super+snake/">Shelby GT500 Super Snake</a>.<br />
<br />
Starting with the already-quick Focus ST, Shelby adds <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/ford+racing/">Ford Racing</a> suspension components and bigger brakes with cross-drilled rotors, all finished off with a Borla exhaust system incorporating larger, circular outlets. Cheesy body graphics aside, some of the styling enhancements include functional hood vents, a hatch spoiler, unique interior bits and wider wheels and tires. Shelby does mention a tuning option that will increase the engine's 252-horsepower output to more than 300, although no pricing is mentioned. Speaking of price, Shelby says this souped-up hot hatch will carry a "budget minded price" (<em>*ahem*</em>). What is that you ask? Well, after you buy a 2013 Focus ST from your local Ford dealer (base price: $23,700), the Shelby upgrades will cost an extra $14,995. Production of these cars will be limited to just 500 units.<br />
<br />
As for the Super Snake, Shelby is giving the car a wider optional body kit to accommodate the 10-inch front and 13-inch rear wheels. Customer can choose just the wider units at the rear or at all four corners. It seems that <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/">Ford</a> has let slip the official order guides for its 2014 <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/mustang/">Mustang</a> lineup. The changes for the upcoming model year are fairly minimal, as the car was just recently refreshed for 2013, and is expected to get an entirely new model in 2015.<br />
<br />
Sadly, for us and anyone else that has had the pleasure of driving it, the biggest news here is that the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/mustang+boss+302/">Mustang Boss 302</a> will not be carried over for next year. This news runs according to Ford's stated plan of offering the track-terror for just two seasons, but it pains our enthusiast hearts, nevertheless.<br />
<br />
As for the rest of it: there are a couple of new colors (Oxford White and Ruby Red Metallic with Tinted Clearcoat) and three colors that will go away (the Boss 302's School Bus Yellow, High Performance White and Red Candy Metallic). A couple of new exterior appearance packages have been added to the options sheet, as well.<br />

The 2014 <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby+gt500/">Shelby GT500</a> will now get heated front seats as standard (not with the optional Recaros, however), and will also be available in the two new colors. As you're surely aware by now, the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby+gt500/">2013 Ford Shelby GT500</a> boasts a 5.8-liter beast of an engine making 662 horsepower, partnered in crime by 631 pound-feet of torque.<br />
<br />
There seems little to gain in rehashing what we already know - namely, that the 2013 GT500 is fast. Stupid, stinking, earth-shatteringly fast. Ignorantly fast, even. This much is a given. Anybody who can read a spec sheet knows that the GT500 can set ablaze a straight-line drag race and will be even more ludicrous with its snake-encrusted nose pointed toward an unlimited runway. This Mustang will gallop to two 202 miles per hour in fact, which is pure insanity.<br />
<br />
But why? What's the point? To put it another way, what do you do with a two-door coupe straining to keep that supertanker-size engine firmly attached to its motor mounts while the traction control tries (and fails miserably) to keep its rear tires planted? When the keys to the 2013 Shelby GT500 were handed to us, we figured we'd have exactly one week to find out why anyone would want to buy one, beyond the obvious, of course.<br />

When Shelby first <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/06/05/shelby-releases-super-snake-gt500-details/">launched the GT500 Super Snake in 2007</a> (or relaunched, if you consider the one-off 1967 prototype), the 5.4-liter supercharged V8 was boosted all the way up to... wait for it... 600 horsepower. Fast-forward just five years and the muscle car landscape looks quite different. The <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby+gt500/">2013 Shelby GT500</a> now comes with 662 tire-shredding horsepower from the factory.<br />
<br />
To their credit, Shelby American has kept pace the past few years, introducing an <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/09/14/shelby-announces-2011-gt500-super-snake-with-up-to-800-horsepowe/">800-horsepower Super Snake</a> and the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2012/04/05/2012-shelby-1000-2012-new-york/">almighty Shelby 1000</a>. The latest Super Snake model takes things another step further, offering up an incredible 850 horsepower. If that's too much to handle, customers can opt out of the supercharger upgrade and stick with the factory 662 ponies.<br />
<br />
Of course, there's more to the Super Snake than just raw horsepower. The post-title package includes items like upgraded front and rear brakes, Borla exhaust, sport suspension, Shelby-designed 20-inch wheels and a beefier cooling package. There's also the signature stripes, fiberglass hood and an optional widebody kit that allows for wider wheels and tires.<br />
<br />
In total the Super Snake package will lighten your wallet by $28,995, not including the base GT500, or $39,995 if you opt for the 850 horsepower version.<br />

The <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/monterey+motorsports+reunion/">Monterey</a> Peninsula is celebrating all things Shelby this week as part of the company's 50th anniversary celebration. The Cobra in particular will be a part of many events including the Pebble Beach Concours and the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/monterey+motorsports+reunion/">Monterey Motorsports Reunion</a> happening at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.<br />

The Shelby celebration is also especially meaningful since founder Carroll Shelby passed away back in May. As a tribute to the legendary racer and car builder, Shelby American, <a href="http://autoblog.com/ford">Ford Motor Company</a> and Ford Racing have teamed up to build a very special tribute <a href="http://autoblog.com/ford/mustang">Mustang</a>. Called the 2013 Shelby GT500 Cobra, the car features a custom widened body that fits massive 13-inch-wide wheels fitted with a set of 345-series tires. All of that extra traction is quite necessary, as a 4.0-liter Whipple supercharger has been fitted atop the 5.8-liter V8 to produce 850 horsepower. The look of the car is completed with traditional Shelby livery: Guardsman Blue with Wimbledon White stripes.<br />

The <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby+gt500/">2013 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500</a> is an impressive piece of hardware right out of the box. It's a package capable of pulling 11-second quarter mile passes one minute and lapping your favorite road course with genuine fury the next thanks to its impressive suspension tuning and heady 662-horsepower. But how much quicker can its supercharged V8 get with a little tweaking? The guys from Lethal Performance recently set out to find the answer. The team isn't saying exactly what they've done to the king Pony, though we can see a set of dragstrip-friendly "bigs n' littles" have found their way into the wheel wells.<br />

As a result, the 3,852-pound two-door bolted down the drag strip in just 9.77 seconds. Judging by the "thank you" list in the video's credits, this GT500 may even be rocking a shot of nitrous, though we can't say for certain. International man of mystery <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/chris harris">Chris Harris</a> recently abandoned his duties in the UK for a trip to the States. Why? Because of two very important pieces of machinery: the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chevrolet/camaro zl1">2013 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1</a> and the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby gt500">2013 Ford Shelby GT500</a>. Harris took charge of both cars in Manhattan to evaluate their on-road manners before heading to the track for a little showdown. What did he find? On the street, the Camaro is actually easier to live with than its Ford rival thanks to a more comfortable seating position, friendly clutch and easy torque curve.<br />

And on the track? The ZL1 took top honors there, as well, beating the GT500 around <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/monticello/">Monticello</a> by a full two seconds even though it has less power. Despite all this, Harris says if he had to choose one to be his very own, it would be a set of <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/">Ford</a> keys in his pocket. The hoon of hoons says that in this world, bad is good, and the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/mustang/">Mustang</a> is properly scary, where the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chevrolet/camaro/">Camaro</a> is simply too drivable. There is only one original 1967 Shelby GT500 Convertible. Built as a prototype for <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/carol shelby">Carroll Shelby</a> himself, the machine rocked a potent dual-quad 428 under the hood, and, like all early <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford">Ford</a> prototypes, was slated for destruction after a certain period of time. However, the car was stolen and missing long enough to upset the natural order of things. As such, the machine escaped the jaws of the crusher and lived on to find a home in a museum in Volo, Illinois. Not surprisingly, the convertible is worth a heavy stack of cash.<br />

Listen to the sage words of the late <a href="http://autoblog.com/tag/caroll shelby">Carroll Shelby</a>: "650 horsepower? Nobody else has it." We're guessing this footage was recorded a little while back, before the final certified rating of the 5.8-liter supercharged engine in the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby+gt500/">2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500</a> came in at 662 horsepower and 631 pound-feet of torque.<br />
<br />
Indeed, there isn't a single car anywhere near the sticker price of the 2013 GT500 - not even the stupid-fast <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chevrolet/zr1/">Chevy Corvette ZR1</a> - that offers as many horses under the hood as the most powerful production <a href="http://autoblog.com/ford/mustang">Mustang</a> in history. Suffice it to say, reeling in 662 galloping ponies and sending them to the rear tires isn't an easy conundrum to solve.<br />
<br />
And that's where launch control comes into play. It's a cool system, allowing the driver to alter the RPM held by the engine with the clutch depressed. Drop the clutch and, instead of watching your Goodyear F1 Supercar tires go the way of the Dodo, you hook up and take off down the drag strip.<br />

Or, ya know, you could turn the system off and smoke bomb your neighborhood. Inside Line took the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/2012+chevrolet+camaro+zl1/">2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby+gt500/">2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500</a>, together, on a field trip: to Westminster, California where where they were both tested on the same dyno at MD Automotive, run the by same operator on the same day. In case any memories need refreshing, the specs run thusly: the ZL1 has a 6.2-liter supercharged V8 belting out 580 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 556 pound-feet of torque at 4,200 rpm, for a 0-60 time of 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 184 miles per hour. The Shelby GT500 rocks up with a supercharged 5.8-liter boasting 662 hp and 631 lb-ft, for a 0-60 time of 3.7 seconds and a top speed in excess of 200 mph. Both get the power down via six-speed manual transmissions.<br />
<br />
All things being equal, the dyno returns should have them split by something like 82 hp and 75 lb-ft. But good luck with equality, at least on this day: the Camaro charted 497 hp and 497 lb-ft, a the kind of 15 percent drop you might expect due to driveline losses, and just 11 percent of its torque sapped.<br />
<br />
The GT500 would have none of it, charting 595 hp and 603 lb-ft. That leaves an on-the-road gap of 98-hp to the ZL1, and even though it loses more torque percentage-wise, it still comes out at an absolutely insane 603 lb-ft.<br />
<br />
This latest info gives a new round of ammo to the armchair testers until the comparos start rolling in. There's a reason the speedometer on the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby gt500">2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500</a> reaches all the way to 220 mph. By all accounts, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford">Ford</a> poured a substantial amount of development resources into the supercharged creation by running it through the ringer at some of the world's most hallowed courses. Those include the infamous <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/nurburgring">N&uuml;rburgring</a> and Italy's massive <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/nardo/">Nardo Ring</a>. The automaker has finally released a video detailing some of that work, specifically on the Shelby GT500's high-speed dynamics. In order for a production vehicle to safely operate at 200 mph, the machine needs to not only be able to achieve the speed, but also to maintain the velocity safely.<br />

It also needs to be able to stop at a moment's notice. As such, engineers ran the 642 horsepower sportscar up to V-max and proceeded to induce a full ABS stop. That must have been an interesting moment behind the wheel. At 6:55PM PST on Wednesday, engines across the world were revved in unison to honor the late <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/carroll+shelby/">Carroll Shelby</a>, who <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2012/05/11/carroll-shelby-passes-away-at-age-89/">passed away last Thursday</a> at the age of 89. The raucous tribute was organized by the <a href="http://www.petersen.org/">Petersen Automotive Museum</a> in Los Angeles, which followed up the synchronized salute of RPMs with an evening of remembrance hosted by <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/jay+leno/">Jay Leno</a> and attended by a litany of the auto world's most revered members, including Parnelli Jones, Phil Remington, Don Prudhomme, Linda Vaughn, Ed Pink, Edsel Ford II and Dan Gurney, among others both famous and just friends of Shelby.<br />

The passing of automotive legend <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/carroll+shelby">Carroll Shelby</a> has led to an <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2012/05/21/jay-leno-gets-nostalgic-driving-shelby-gt500-and-boss-302/">outpouring of support</a>, including a replay of a toe-tapping melody from country music great Mac Davis. Davis has enjoyed a long and successful career as both a performer and songwriter, with several number one songs including three written for Elvis Presley.<br />

After all, that's the obscene amount of horsepower ripping at the rear tires courtesy of the supercharged 5.8-liter V8 under the hood. Unfortunately, it's not quite that simple. For the first time in its life, the GT500 has found itself lined up against a legitimate competitor in the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chevrolet/camaro+zl1/">Chevrolet Camaro ZL1</a>. The muscle car/supercar crossbreed from <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/general motors">General Motors</a> is stitched to conquer not only the quarter mile, but the nation's road courses as well.<br />

In order to answer that threat, the engineers at <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford">Ford</a> have laid a hand on nearly every mechanical and electrical system on board the GT500. While that means the blown V8 churns out a diabolical 112 more horsepower than the previous model, it also means the top-tier <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/mustang">Mustang</a> now comes with tricks like user-selectable <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/bilstein">Bilstein</a> dampers, adjustable electronic power steering, larger brakes and an array of optional cooling systems. When you've got the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2012/04/26/2013-ford-shelby-gt500-certified-at-662-hp-and-630-pound-feet/">most powerful factory V8</a> in the world, even the best driver can struggle with getting that power to the pavement. The 662 horsepower and 631 pound-feet of torque the 2013 <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby+gt500/">Ford Mustang Shelby GT500</a> is packing can easily turn its rear tires into expensive clouds of smoke. That's why the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 is the first Shelby Mustang to be factory-equipped with launch control. "With so much more power and torque on tap from the new 5.8-liter V8," says SVT senior engineer John Pfeiffer, "launch control makes it easier for drivers to take advantage of the performance." What's different about the Shelby GT500s launch control is that drivers can engage it by just pressing a single button, and it's also capable of being fine-tuned for the best reesults.<br />
<br />
Launch control is by now a familiar technology, with systems operating by holding engine RPM at a set point to help facilitate clean, repeatable launches. "Launch control is essentially a special mode of the traction control system that integrates the brake and engine management systems to keep the tires balanced on the peak of the mu-slip curve," explains SVT's Pfeiffer. In plain English, it's designed to send as much torque to the tires as they can handle. What's different about the system in the 2013 GT500 is its flexibility. "Most of our competitors' launch control systems have a fixed engine launch speed," says SVT Engineering supervisor Eddie Khan, but since "not every driver has the same style, and surface, tire, and climate conditions vary," he points out, "we've given Shelby GT500 drivers the ability to adjust the engine speed to achieve the best and most consistent performance."<br />

Drivers can use <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/10/06/2013-ford-mustang-to-get-gauge-and-track-apps/">TrackApps</a> through the instrument cluster or tap a switch to the left of the instrument panel to enable the system. Through TrackApps, the engine launch rpm can be adjusted between 3,000 to 4,500 rpm with steps of 100 rpm. There are other tricks up the GT500s sleeve, too. Extinguish the traction control while using launch control and you'll get an rpm-only mode that keeps the brakes out of the picture to avoid sacrificing any possible speed. Launch control also works with the different stability control modes to allow some wheelspin when that's the fastest way out of the hole. "It's not as intrusive as some TC systems have been in the past," said SVTs Khan. The folks at Motor Authority snagged some spy video of the new <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby+gt500/">2013 Ford Shelby GT500</a> hitting the N&uuml;rburgring. Unfortunately, rain hit the 'Ring first, so while there are still some potent exhaust noises emanating from the 662-horsepower 'Stang, there isn't a lot of tearing it up on the slick surface.<br />
<br />
Let's talk nemesis, namely the 580-horsepower <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/camaro%20zl1/">Camaro ZL1</a>. The battleground established, the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chevrolet">Chevrolet</a> folks turned their verbal turrets on the Shelby and fired high-impact rounds - see Exhibits <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/11/18/camaro-zl1-chief-engineer-says-youre-welcome-to-ford-mustang/">A</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2012/01/20/camaro-chief-claims-zl1-will-outperform-shelby-gt500/">B</a> - on their way to setting an <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2012/05/04/2012-chevrolet-camaro-zl1-runs-quarter-mile-in-11-93-seconds/">11.93-second drag</a> time and a "Holy smokes!" <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/10/06/gm-confirms-camaro-zl1-7-41-ring-lap-time-w-video/">7:41 lap at the 'Ring</a>. Since there's no reason to dawdle round the 'Ring, we have to expect that Ford's fly-by has some sort of recon purpose.<br />

As many will bring up once the time is set, the Shelby has a mess of advantages on paper: more horsepower, more torque, less weight. No matter, for as Cormac McCarthy wrote, there will be blood. We still don't know whose blood it will be, but oh yes, one of these cars is going to bleed. In the high-stakes world of performance cars, horsepower is king. It's the first stat bragged about by owners trying to explain why their <a href="http://autoblog.com/chevrolet/camaro">Camaro</a>, <a href="http://autoblog.com/dodge/challenger">Challenger</a> or <a href="http://autoblog.com/ford/mustang">Mustang</a> is better than their foes', and it's the headline figure promoted by the automakers themselves year after year.<br />
<br />
When <a href="http://autoblog.com/ford">Ford</a> announced that the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby+gt500/">2013 Shelby GT500</a> would be punishing the pavement with <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/11/15/2013-ford-shelby-gt500-delivers-650-hp-and-200-mph-straight-from/">650 horses</a>, the world stood up and took notice. Remember, though, these were just estimated figures, as the car had not yet been SAE certified. If reports from the Team Shelby message board prove accurate, the 2013 GT500 has finally gotten its official figures.<br />
<br />
How's about 662 horsepower and <strike>630</strike> 631 pound-feet of torque?<br />
<br />
Yep, that'll do. It's notable that these figures represent increases of 12 horsepower and <strike>30</strike> 21 lb-ft over the earlier estimates, and they also put even more distance between Ford's top-performing Mustang and Chevy's 580-horsepower <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chevrolet/camaro+zl1/">Camaro ZL1</a>. It also means the Shelby lays down considerably more ponies that the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chevrolet/zr1/">Corvette ZR1</a> and its 638 horsepower and 604 lb-ft.<br />
<br />
Now, will we see a corresponding horsepower-addled response from <a href="http://autoblog.com/chrysler">Chrysler</a> or <a href="http://autoblog.com/tag/gm">General Motors</a>? Only time will tell.<br />

If you managed to read that title without falling into the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" trap, congratulations. You aren't a child of the '80s. "Tosh.0" finally got around to giving Joey, the kid who drove his father's brand-new <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby+gt500/">Ford Mustang GT500</a> through the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2012/02/20/teen-who-crashed-dads-new-mustang-through-garage-to-get-tosh-0/">back wall of the family garage</a>, a Web Redemption. As it turns out, the story was far worse than anyone imagined. The GT500 didn't even belong to the family when the gung-ho teen sent it careening through the carpentry. Instead, the local dealer had simply brought the car by to show Joey's father.<br />
<br />
Joey's dad wound up buying the Eleanor Edition Shelby for $60,000 and immediately had to sink another $30,000 into repairs. It's unclear whether that figure covered the bathroom Joey also took out in the crash. Ouch.<br />

Twenty years ago, <a href="http://autoblog.com/ford">Ford</a> debuted the 1993 SVT Mustang Cobra at the <a href="http://autoblog.com/chicago">Chicago Auto Show</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2012/02/06/fords-svt-celebrates-20-years-of-blue-oval-performance/">introduced the world to its high-performance skunkworks department</a>, known as <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/SVT/">SVT</a> or Special Vehicle Team.<br />
<br />
Today, Ford celebrates SVT's platinum anniversary the only way it knows how: with another <a href="http://autoblog.com/ford/mustang">Mustang</a> variant. And as suspected, it comes in the form of <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2012/01/05/2013-ford-shelby-gt500-convertible-caught-enjoying-the-weather-a/">a topless Shelby GT500</a>.<br />
<br />
Just as a refresher, at the 1992 show in Chicago the SVT Cobra put out 235 horsepower from its Vanilla Ice-approved 5.0-liter V8. Twenty years later, displacement has grown by less than a liter, but thanks to some 21st century tech and a massive supercharger, the 5.8-liter V8 in the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 Convertible makes the same 650 hp (and 600 pound-feet of torque) as <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/11/15/2013-ford-shelby-gt500-delivers-650-hp-and-200-mph-straight-from/">its coupe counterpart</a>, laying claim to the most powerful production V8 in the world.<br />
<br />
In addition to the carbon fiber driveshaft, upgraded clutch, transmission and axle, SVT fitted its own specially developed Bilstein electronic adjustable dampers, along with six-piston Brembo calipers squeezing massive discs up front.<br />
<br />
Like the coupe, the Bilstein setup is part of the Performance Package (why it's not included as standard is beyond us) and Ford will also offer a Track Pack that includes an external oil cooler, differential cooler and transmission cooler to keep temps in check when flogging the drop top around the tarmac.<br />
<br />
And before you ask: No, the GT500 coupe's 200 mph top speed doesn't carry over to the Convertible.
