Slather on an extra glob of Gorilla Glue adhesive, as the 2013 <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby+gt500/">Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Convertible</a> is going to seriously strain hairpieces. Like its <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby+gt500/">GT500 Coupe</a> sibling, introduced late last year at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/la-auto-show/">Los Angeles Auto Show</a>, the drop-top is fitted with a supercharged 5.8-liter V8 making an astounding 650 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque, which makes it the most powerful eight-cylinder production engine in the universe.<br />

<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/">Ford</a> says the new model, equipped with the optional Performance Package that includes Bilstein electronic adjustable dampers, is capable of running Sebring International Raceway about 3.5 seconds quicker per lap compared to the 2011 and 2012 models (both down 100 horsepower against the 2013 model). Curb weight should be a couple hundred pounds heavier than its closed-roof cousin courtesy of additional bracing on the power-operated convertible soft top.<br />

The Shelby GT500, built at AutoAlliance International Plant in Flat Rock, Michigan, will blast into showrooms this summer. Detroit in January isn't exactly the proper place to go topless in a 650-horsepower tire smoker, but that doesn't mean rumors of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby+gt500/">2013 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500</a> Convertible's <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/12/29/2013-ford-shelby-gt500-convertible-to-debut-in-detroit/">impending debut</a> at the <a href="http://autoblog.com/category/detroit-auto-show">2012 Detroit Auto Show</a> aren't accurate. And these spy shots prove that the car is very much ready for its big unveiling.<br />
<br />
We're expecting the soft-top Shelby to pack the same 5.8-liter supercharged engine as its hard-topped sibling, which means the asphalt will be punished with those aforementioned 650 ponies along with 600 pound-feet of torque. For the coupe, that power equals a top speed of over 200 miles per hour.<br />
<br />
So, here's the big question: Will the 2013 GT500 Convertible be the least expensive way to a wind-in-your-hair blast at supercar speeds? While we all ponder that question, let's all take a gander at the spy photos in the gallery above. When you grow up in Detroit, the <a href="http://autoblog.com/ford/mustang">Ford Mustang</a> is so much more than just another performance car. It's arguably the most iconic automobile born within these city limits, and anyone who's called the area home can't help but feel an overwhelming sense of pride while driving the Blue Oval's pony through the Motor City. It's like eating a hot dog at the ballpark - you can't explain why, but it just tastes better.<br />
<br />
At the tippy top of the Mustang hierarchy sits the <a href="http://autoblog.com/ford/shelby+gt500">Shelby GT500</a> with its supercharged 5.4-liter V8, 550 horsepower and an exhaust note that will wake the neighbors. Our love for the GT500 has run deep since its debut in 2006, though most of that affection was never given to the convertible. The droptop Ford suffers from substantially more handling and rigidity issues than the coupe, and when you consider the added price that Ford charges to lob off the roof ($5,000, in this case), it can seem like a puzzling proposition.<br />
<br />
For 2011, Ford has tweaked the GT500's core, not to mention stiffening individual components of both the front and rear suspension setups. That, combined with a new electric power assist steering system, means this should be the most driver-focused GT500 yet. Thus, we put the top back and basked in the warm Michigan sun to rekindle our love with Detroit's most powerful pony car. This, friends, is our kind of end-of-summer lovin'.<br />

We've just gotten off the horn with <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/ford/">Ford</a>'s SVT performance division, and we've learned that the Blue Oval's hot-rod arm is going to limit production of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby+gt500">2011 Shelby GT500</a> to 5,500 units for this model year. According to Ford spokesman Henry Platts, the move is not the result of slow sales, but rather a desire to maintain exclusivity. In fact, sales of Ford's king of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/mustang">Mustang</a> range have "exceeded expectations," with in excess of 3,300 orders already placed.<br />
<br />
The 550-horsepower GT500 has not only been performing surprisingly well in a down economy, it's been going out the door loaded-to-the sills with options. According to Platts, there have been three times as many GT500 coupes ordered with the $1995 glass roof option as compared to the regular Mustang. In the "News That Makes Us Happy" category comes word that a full 68 percent have been spec'd out with the $3,495 performance package (includes 19- and 20-inch painted forged alloys, 3.73 limited-slip, tuned suspension, Gurney flap rear spoiler, etc.), and additionally, 70 percent of all GT500s have been ordered with the $2,340 electronics package (navi, dual-zone HVAC and Sirius/HD radio). With the GT500 starting at an out-the-door price of $49,495 <em>before</em> options, we're guessing that the GT500 is more than carrying its weight for Dearborn's bottom line.<br />
<br />
While Ford is limiting total output of the GT500 to 5,500 units for 2011, Platts says the automaker has no plans to dictate how that shakes out in the coupe/convertible bodystyle mix. That said, if you've been fence-sitting on whether to pick up a GT500 of your very own this year, might we suggest that you make up your mind... quickly.<br />
