Two weeks ago, a camouflaged C7 Corvette was spotted as a screen saver during demo mode in Gran Turismo 5. Today, the Corvette C7 Test Prototype can now be downloaded for free from the Playstation Store.

Chevrolet worked with GT5 developer Polyphony Digital to create an authentic version of the test car prototype that is still in the oven as it prepares for a reveal at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show, from the wrinkles in the soft cladding to the "specific driving characteristics that are currently being tuned and refined."

It's the closest you'll get to being a genuine test driver, and you'll hear no complaints from us about gaining that experience in one of the most anticipated sports cars ever. There's a press release below that you can read as you fire up the old PlayStation3.
Continue reading Corvette C7 prototype now available as free DLC for Gran Turismo 5

Corvette C7 prototype now available as free DLC for Gran Turismo 5 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 29 Nov 2012 10:28:00 EST.
The camouflaged C7 Corvette that will strip down for the 2013 Detroit Auto Show has been seen on the roads as a coupe and as a convertible, and in a teaser video. Chalking up another appearance in video, the camo'd coupe does a screen saver cameo during demo mode in Gran Turismo 5. Out back it's hung with a "CORVETTE" vanity plate that looks Michigan standard but is actually from the state of Polyphony...

A camouflaged Nissan GT-R was introduced to Gran Turismo in the same way a number of years ago. According to a YouTube commenter, the Corvette dealership in the game has 17 cars for sale but only 16 of them show up. Our guess is that you can take advantage of the 450 horsepower lurking inside this one after 1/13/13. For now you can have another look at it in the videos below.
Continue reading Camo'd Corvette C7 showing up in Gran Turismo [w/video]

Camo'd Corvette C7 showing up in Gran Turismo [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 13 Nov 2012 17:35:00 EST.
The Gran Turismo video racing simulator franchise is four years into its tie-up with Nissan that created Gran Turismo: The Academy. One might have thought taking third-in-class at the 24 Hours of Dubai would have been enough, but no, there's more, and it's called Gran Turismo 5: GT Academy Edition.

When it arrives on September 26, the shiny disc inside will contain the packs available for the last two years: Car Packs 1, 2 and 3, Course Packs 1 and 2, the Special Paint Pack and Racing Gear Pack, and the very same Nissan GT-R that Kazunor Yamauch drove in the Nürburgring 24-Hour race this year. Well, not that one, but a digital representation of it.

According to Playstation's EU people, it will cost the equivalent of €29.99, which is about $37 at current conversion rates. You have two months to save up and a video below to keep you in the mood until then.
Continue reading Gran Turismo 5 Academy Edition coming Sept. 26 [w/video]

Gran Turismo 5 Academy Edition coming Sept. 26 [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 02 Aug 2012 12:44:00 EST.
Sony used E3 to introduce the PlayStation Move Racing Wheel peripheral, and so far it looks like everyone is mostly moved to say, "Hmmm." The 'wheel' is a round center section fitted with paddles (for shifting, say) and a set of plastic grips hung out to the sides, and the standard Move controller slots through the center. It looks something like Batman's virtual simulator for the Tumbler.

It has force feedback, the grips fold out - again, batlike - to provide a grip like motorcycle handlebars and the 'throttle' actually twists, and Sony says it delivers "precise motion tracking for responsive handling of your vehicle." A freestanding accessory, you hold it out in front of you in the air, which could make it the right gear for those who look askance at the empty-handed XBox Kinect folks, unwilling to completely pretend they're driving a car in a video game. If that's you, it will go on sale this fall. Head on over to Engadget for a quick review and video of it in action.
Sony announces Playstation Move Racing Wheel at E3 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 14 Jun 2012 08:32:00 EST.
The Acura NSX Concept was only just unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show and here it's already in a Gran Turismo 5 video. The newest take on an ecological supercar features Honda's recently pointy concept-design language, as well as a V6 amidships getting help from three hybrid motors and Acura's SH-AWD.

The real thing has been promised three years hence, but if this stab at it does get to production, we have no doubt we'll be seeing a lot more of it before then. The next phase in the NSX-fest begins after the jump, with two minutes of the supercoupe on an angry run through GT5 vistas.
Continue reading Acura NSX old and new get together in Gran Turismo 5 vid

Acura NSX old and new get together in Gran Turismo 5 vid originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 10 Jan 2012 12:00:00 EST. Five years ago, a gent named Art Morrison won the Gran Turismo Award at SEMA for his 3G Corvette. A come-hither restomod, Morrison had tucked a bucket of modern internals - like his own chassis supporting an aluminum V8 with 538 horsepower and a Viper transmission - under the body of a 1960 Corvette. The prize meant that his car would appear in Playstation's GT5, which it did the following year (as seen at right).

Matt Farrah, in his guise as Mr. Smoking Tire, got the 3G Corvette out of the video game and onto the cambered apexes of Nevada's Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch. What happens after that looks and sounds a lot better than anything you'll see in GT5. Follow the jump to check it out.
Continue reading Matt Farah drives the Art Morrison 3G 1960 Corvette

Matt Farah drives the Art Morrison 3G 1960 Corvette originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 09 Oct 2011 18:03:00 EST.
Polyphony Digital has something special planed if Sebastian Vettel manages to take the Formula One Driver's Championship for the second year in a row. Vettel made history by becoming the youngest driver to ever take the title last year, and if he pulls off a repeat performance, Polyphony says it will release the Red Bull X2010 in game to anyone who logs on to Gran Turismo 5. As anyone who's familiar with the franchise can tell you, the X2010 is ultimate prize in GT5, as vehicle is the award for completing every challenge in the game.

Currently, there are only five races left in the 2011 F1 season, and Vettel has an astounding 124-point lead in the Driver's Championship. He only needs to score one single point in any one of the remaining five races in order to win the title. That means pulling off a 10th-place-or-better finish. Looks like GT5 fans will be enjoying their own X2010 very soon.

In addition, Polyphony has announced a sweeping update for GT5 that includes interior views for all vehicles in the game, reduced load times, the ability to save mid-race and 11 new NASCAR vehicles from the current season. The game's price will also receive a big cut, dropping from $59.99 to $39.99... just as Forza 4 shows up.
Gran Turismo 5 to get first major update, Red Bull X2010 prototype originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 06 Oct 2011 13:31:00 EST.
If you're looking for the ultimate example of life imitating art imitating life, look no further than the Nissan/Playstation GT Academy. The program pits thousands upon thousands of gamers playing Gran Turismo 5 against each other in a fight over a spot on Nissan's actual racing team. Now that competition is jumping onto television screens as a reality program.

The international competition is the subject of a new reality TV show that is set to air its first of five episodes on the Speed Network starting tomorrow, September 20. The show documents how a group of gamers were honed into a select team of actual racers, and the series was shot at England's legendary Silverstone race track. As is typical with such reality shows, the winner will be announced in the final episode.

Whether you had opportunity to enter the competition or not, it looks to be an interesting watch. Follow the jump for a preview video and for the full press release for all the details.
Continue reading Speed teases reality show chronicling Nissan/Playstation GT Academy

Speed teases reality show chronicling Nissan/Playstation GT Academy originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 19 Sep 2011 13:00:00 EST. The mastermind behind one of the most popular racing video game series on the planet recently campaigned a Nissan GT-R in the four-hour Nürburgring VLR alongside Tobias and Michael Shulze and the founder of Opera Performance, Yasuyoshi Yamamoto. The team's car is reportedly the spitting image of the GT500 Stealth GT-R from Gran Turismo 5, and word has it that the four-man team is out to compete in this year's Nurburgring 24 Hours.

Last year, Yamauchi raced a specially-prepared Lexus IS-F in a number of VLN races. His efforts netted his team a class victory in a four-hour race, and GTPlanet reports that the gaming mastermind took home fourth in his class at the 2010 Nuburgring 24 Hours. Look for Yamauchi and his crew in the #71 car when the green flag drops.

That is, so long as the team isn't delayed from arriving until Christmas 2015...
Gran Turismo 5 creator competing in 24 Hours of Nürburgring originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 21 Jun 2011 09:59:00 EST.
There are some truly fanatical Gran Turismo gamers out there. Case in point? GT Planet Gamer Yonis was searching the GT5 website when he unlocked the key to a treasure trove of unused track titles. Yonis reportedly stumbled upon the image directory in a GT5-specific part of the site, and none of the tracks are available on the game.

Our first thought when we saw the track logos was that the folks at Polyphony Digital could find it in their hearts to offer the tracks at a future update. GT Planet points out that El Capitan was already spotted at the Red Bull "Horse Power" trailer, so we know at least some of these tracks can be on the way to our PS3s. Another possibility is that Polyphony Digital could be saving the tracks for a later pay-for-play add-on to GT5 like the Need for Speed franchise did with the Ferrari Racing Pack for Shift.

Head over to GT Planet to check out all 24 track logos, and you can hit the jump to watch the GT5 trailer with El Capitan one more time.

A handful of Gran Turismo 5 players are currently battling it out for a shot at becoming a real-world race car driver in Polyphony's GT Academy, but according to GT Planet, there may be a bit of an issue. Currently, the top three drivers are using a less-than-sanctioned route to get around the track by dipping off of the asphalt and cutting two corners entirely to come up with a significantly quicker lap time than everyone else.

To put it simply, the three players who are on the podium right now are cheating.

Now, cheating is a staple of both video gamedom and the hallowed halls of racing, so it should come as no surprise that someone has figured out a way to get around a track quicker than everyone else by <strike>bending</strike> obliterating the rules. Still, it kind of ruffles our feathers to know that the top award could go to the shadiest man (or woman) standing.

So far, there's no word on whether or not Polyphony will step in to quell the competitor's cheating ways. Hit the jump to have a look at the videos for yourself.

Getting ready to fire up Gran Turismo 5 this morning? Polyphony Digital would like you to wait a few moments, because there is a patch that needs to be downloaded... and it's 608 megabytes. Don't fret though, According to Eurogamer, this update brings a few new interesting features:

- Seasonal Events: Fresh racing events that allow GT5 users to compete against each other to win rewards and experience points. Leader boards will allow you to see where you stand compared to the rest of the world.

- Online Car Dealer: A new dealer lot that will focus on popular and rare used cars. This is a nice change of pace from the constant stream of odd JDM Civics and Subaru 360s that seem to wind up in our Used Car lot.

- Online Race Rewards and Experience: Just like it sounds... this adds rewards and experience points for races won in online competitions.

- Mechanical Damage: It was made available for online races but has now made its way to the offline races as well.

- HUD: You can disable the HUD display for a full-screen view of the action.

- Improved Rewards: The rewards for certain challenges, such as the AMG Driving Experience, have been increased.

- GT Academy officially launches as of 12/20/2010

We are still learning more with regards to what exactly is included in this mega-update, but word on the virtual street is that this ought to be a solid early Christmas present for Gran Turismo 5 fans.
'Tis the season once again. We were scratching our heads wondering what to get the car-obsessed men and women in our lives, so we made some lists. This first list contains ideas for stuff that goes under the tree, the kind of car gifts that don't cost an arm and a leg but go over well with the auto lovers in your family.

Gran Turismo 5 pileup - Click above to watch the video after the jump

Gran Turismo 5 has been billed as a hyper-realistic driving simulator. And while it's almost impossible for Polyphony Digital's golden egg to live up to six years of hype and hope (we called the game "an incomplete title"), there are plenty of gamers out there who feel the driving dynamics are second-to-none. But no matter how hard the hundreds of GT5 developers tried, perfection and pixels are still miles apart.

For instance, what happens when you're driving a Nissan GT-R really fast on a banked oval track, and as you begin to ease left, an equally fast Porsche 911 taps you on the driver-side door? In real life, there is a solid chance that you'd lose control and perhaps come to a stop with your wheels pointing skyward. In GT5, you can apparently lose control, land on a Lamborghini Gallardo and still finish the race. Want proof? Hit the jump to watch the replay of one gamer's hilarious but not-so-realistic experience. At least the Lambo slowed down once it began piggybacking an extra 4,000 pounds.

Let's face it - driving games are best enjoyed when your control surfaces are in the shape of a proper steering wheel. Naturally, we'd rather have a nice set of pedals and a manual-ish shifter to go along with it, but we'll take what we can get.

And so we present to you the Thrustmaster T500RS, which will apparently be an officially licensed steering wheel accessory for Gran Turismo 5. At present, Logitech's Driving Force wheel is the only available steering wheel controller for the real racing sim.

Obviously, we haven't yet sampled this controller and therefore can't cast our own judgment, but Thrustmaster claims its new T500RS will be the most precise wheel on the market. Such precision won't come cheap - current speculation has this peripheral coming in with a $500 price tag. Be prepared to cough up extra for the shifter accessory.

Surely, you've got to pay to play, as they say, but can we just remind you that you could theoretically put together a LeMons race car for about that same kind of dough? Just sayin'.
GT5's Nürburgring vs the real-life Nürburgring? Pfft. Please. The best side-by-side comparo yet involving Polyphony Digital's Playstation 3 opus comes from the gang at G4TV, who pit the new Gran Turismo 5 karting feature against the beloved classic, Mario Kart 64. Snap judgment: One of these looks (a lot) more fun than the other. Sorry, Yamauchi-san: Miamoto's legendary plumber wins this duel without even having to toss a single banana. Now, time to dust off that N64 in the garage...

Race-Star ConverTTable is our kind of furniture - Click above to watch video after the jump

A driving wheel sounds like a nice addition for any racing video game, but in reality it might not work as well as you hope. You have to find a place to mount the wheel and a make sure your pedals aren't sliding around the floor. It's not that much of a hassle, but a dedicated space for both wheel and pedals would be nice... throw in a racing seat and the virtual-racing ante has officially been upped.

But where would you store something like that and how do you craft it so as not to be a total eye-sore? Austrian company Race-Star has the answer and it comes in the form of the ConverTTable.

What appears to be a fairly basic box table actually hides a special gaming secret. The ConverTTable unfolds to reveal a driving wheel, adjustable pedals and a track mounted racing bucket. You can slide it in front of your TV and the Nürburgring on Gran Turismo 5 goes from a controller-hucking experience to a carousel-shredding event. When it's time to shut down the fun, simply fold the table back up and it turns right back into drink-holding furniture.

The price for a Race-Star ConverTTable setup is listed at €4,999, which translates to about $6,605 USD. That is a lot of coin for something you might be able to engineer in your garage. Can you produce the same level of fit-and-finish as Race-Star has achieved? Probably not, unless you are used to working with high-quality plastics. Regardless of the price, the Race-Star ConverTTable has earned its place on our Autoblog Holiday Wish List.
Denis Malevanyi is one skilled hot shoe and he can hustle a BMW M3 around the 'Ring with the best of them. He's also pretty good at driving virtual cars in simulation series like Race2Play, as well as in Gran Turismo 5. We've seen how a virtual driver's skill can translate when placed into reality, but Malevanyi already knows what he's doing behind the wheel. He recently captured video of himself running the Nürburgring in an E92 M3, both in reality and the digital world, and stacked the footage together.
Some diehard fans are so excited that it's here, they may not care about the obvious issues the game has at launch. On the other end of the spectrum, some folks are quick to deride the racing sim as being terrible when that's far from true. The reality is that Gran Turismo 5 falls somewhere in between these two extreme points of view. It is pretty amazing, while its flaws are clearly visible. Creator Kazunori Yamauchi has revealed that fixes are planned, and should arrive by early December.

What exactly do these fixes include? Mechanical damage will be added to the existing cosmetic damage, the "blocky shadows" will be resolved, online functionality will be increased and the ability to disable the HUD is mentioned as a possible option.

Whatever your gripes with the game may be, it's nice to hear that Polyphony Digital is listening. The ability to implement fixes and dole them out by way of a download is a far cry better from the old days of waiting for the next generation game.
