Cadillac ATS at the Nurburgring

General Motors has released the third installment of the company's mini web series on the Cadillac ATS and its development at the Nürburgring. The latest video takes us around the infamous German track with Adam Dean, Cadillac ride and handling engineer, behind the wheel. Dean gives us an in-depth look at what's like to sling the new baby Cadillac around one of the world's most challenging road courses at speed. We can't imagine too many ATS buyers will be caning their sedan around a race track, but it's good to know the vehicle can hold its own just the same.

Will GM's efforts on Green Hell help the ATS take on hardware from BMW and Mercedes-Benz? We'll just have to wait to find out. Word has it the vehicle will debut with the same turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that will eventually show up in the likes of the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu and next-generation Chevrolet Impala. The lump should produce somewhere between 270 and 280 horsepower. That should be plenty for a small luxury sedan. Hit the jump to check out the video for yourself.

We know what the detractors say. We've heard all the arguments that claim Nürburgring times are worthless because of the infinitely changing variables that shift from one day to the next. We know that different cars driven by different drivers will produce vastly different results, and that measuring manhood by whipping out your Nürburgring track times isn't exactly comparing apples to apples. That's okay. We just don't care.

Why? Because as long as manufacturers are willing to do battle by flogging their latest wares around Green Hell, we get to enjoy delicious videos like the one after the jump. You see, Ferrari has just broken the seven-minute barrier for production cars by laying down a scorching 6 minute, 58.16 second lap time around one of the world's most grueling courses in the new 599XX.

Watching the 700 horsepower beast devour the German tarmac is mesmerizing, as is the sound of that melodious V12. If, like us, you were wondering why Ferrari was keeping its mouth shut while manufacturers like Nissan, Chevrolet and Dodge laid claim to previous records, now you know. Go ahead and say goodbye to your productivity, hop the jump and enjoy the show.

A couple months back, the bone-stock Corvette ZR1 put supercars everywhere on notice when it took on the famed Nurburgring and ran a Nissan GT-R-beating 7:26. The track-ready, fire breathing Viper ACR bested the Corvette's amazing effort by posting an incredible 7:22 lap time. Despite a four second difference in total track time, blogger Andi Baritchi slapped both track videos together (after 30 seconds of annoying scrolling text) to verify that the Viper ACR came out on top. Hit the jump to view the two fastest American-made, street legal, 600+ hp beasts as they tangle in a 'Ring battle for the ages. The video proves what we already knew, but it's still fun to see how two very different, yet very similar vehicles, handle the twists and turns of the Nurburgring. Check out the vid after the jump. The Nürburgring has become an absolute Mecca for automotive enthusiasts and racing fans across Europe and around the world. Setting new 'Ring records has become a vaunted pursuit, and any automaker worth its bolts brings its latest sportscar prototypes to test there. Among those marques is Ferrari, which in addition to three racing circuits that the company owns and operates in Italy, comes to the Nürburgring for proper shakedowns. (Witness Schumacher's reported crash there in a 430 Scuderia prototype just last month as an example.)

Reports now indicate that the Prancing Horse marque has set up shop at the Nürburgring. The information comes directly from Germany, which named the 'Ring as one of the 10 most important sites in the country. Since our German isn't up to snuff and online translators seem to make less sense of the text than we can on our own, it remains a bit unclear as to the nature of the new facility. However, it seems to combine a showroom and merchandising store among its attractions. The Ferrari installation at the Nürburgring is apparently one of many that circuit managers hope will set up shop at the side of the track, which is undergoing a vast renovation to its facilities for next summer. We hope to bring you more information on the Nürburgring renovation plan in the near future, so stay tuned.

The undisputed champion of hydrogen fuel cell SUVs at the Nurburgring has been crowned: the Nissan X-Trail FCV. The winning time: 11:58. Of course, it's the winning time because it's the only time -- a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle has never ran the 'Ring before.

After piloting the 120 bhp X-Trail around the world for two years, Nissan engineer Frank Eickholt, decide it was time to take it to the track. The €1.3 million X-Trail was apparently hampered by moist tarmac, so you can expect a redo at some point in the future. Just when you thought the 'Ring craze was as hot as it could get, here come the hydro-powered vehicles to... pour some water on it...

Since we're certain there wasn't an Autoblog function at the 'Ring this weekend, we haven't the foggiest what went on. Obsessive checking of the Nurburgring webcam yesterday did show that some kind of debauchery took place. Der Party left behind a whole lot of waste, rotting gently in the bucolic sunshine. Hopping on yesterday, we were expecting to see a barely discernible image of something rare or secret and undoubtedly super cool, but we're a little disappointed that all we got were pictures reminiscent of the aftermath of a raucous birthday party, pinata and all. A quick trip to Nurburgring.com doesn't show anything on the event schedule, either. Maybe Lemmy came down for a private party? What do you think? Thanks for the tip, Nick and Anthony!

UPDATE: The trash has now been cleaned up, but was there all day Monday. It turns out we weren't far off with our Lemmy idea - the event was Rock-Am-Ring, a huge rock festival held annually at the Green Hell.

With the weather beginning to clear up and the mercury heading north, a little spot in the back of our brains is starting to well up in anticipation of the coming track season. We're already beginning to plan our asphalt assault over the summer months, but no matter the venue or the training, we doubt that any other track day will compare to what's being offered at the Nurburgring over the next few months.

Between the end of April and the middle of September, three events are taking place at the world-famous German circuit that gives everyone from novices to experts the chance to lap the 'Ring, and live to tell the tale.

The 'Motorsport Akademie Nurburgring' is the track day to end all track days and includes a two-hour 'guided' tour of the course, following a number of 'Ring veterans as they show you the lines, increase your confidence and finally let you loose for a four hour-long lapping session. Traffic is at a minimum and if you attend a class the day before, you can receive your German National A racing license. How cool would that be to carry in your wallet?

The courses will be held April 26 and 27, July 26 and 27 and September 13 and 14, and include lodging, in-class breakdowns, breakfast and dinner, plus the six-hours of hot lapping action - all for the bargain basement price of £595 ($1,180 US). Now, if we can just figure out a way to get some cheap airfare...
