The Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale was exclusively a two-seater, but here in Geneva, the big Italian coupe gets its rear thrones back. We don't know if the addition of rear passenger space will help improve sales of this special trim of the aging GT, but it's at the very least an excuse for Maserati to shine a few lights on its gorgeous two-door.

Under that rakish carbon fiber bonnet is the same Ferrari-sourced 4.7-liter V8 we've loved for years now, tuned to 460 horsepower in this application and mated to Maserati's MC Race Shift six-speed automatic transmission. Other updates for the MC Stradale include new 20-inch alloy wheels and a smattering of new materials inside the cabin.

Yes, it feels like we write about some version of the GranTurismo every time we attend the Geneva Motor Show, but this car still tickles our fancy each and every time. Scroll down for the press blast and check out the four-seater for yourself in the high-resolution gallery.
Continue reading 2013 Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale gets its groove, seats back

2013 Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale gets its groove, seats back originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 06 Mar 2013 17:29:00 EST.
More seats inside the Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale means the possibility of a wider audience in more ways than one. Currently only available as a two-seater (we don't get the Stradale version, we get the four-seat GranTurismo MC), the addition of back seats will allow twice as many folks inside, and add the car to the purchase lists of those who need to carry more than two souls in their race-derived, 470-horsepower luxury coupes.

Furthermore, the MC Stradale now gets a carbon fiber hood with an air intakes and extractors, 20-inch alloys and new materials inside. It will take the A-lister's spot on the Maserati stand at the Geneva Motor Show, making its world debut alongside the European debut of the new Quattroporte. The press release below can tell you more.
Continue reading Maserati adds rear seats to GranTurismo MC Stradale for Geneva

Maserati adds rear seats to GranTurismo MC Stradale for Geneva originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 27 Feb 2013 18:27:00 EST.
While the launch of a new, car-based website is rarely newsworthy - of the hundreds we're tipped about each year, most are cesspools of spam or vanish in short order. However, the debut of an enthusiast-facing print magazine has actually become a pretty rare occurrence. So when we first caught wind of GranTurismo, we were intrigued enough to take a deeper look.

GranTurismo, as the name hints, will cover European makes and models, both old and new, with the depth afforded by a staff that has spent much of their careers to this point doing just that. The mix will also include motorcycle content in the same Euro genre, as well as motorsports reporting and a "Kit" section that will offer up various watches and driving shoes that we can't afford (advertisers love that stuff). And, while the tradition for this kind of sporting and heritage book is well established in British titles like Classic Cars and Motor Sport (to name but two), GranTurismo will be written and published right here in the US. The small team of editors is based in Chicago and led by Bryan Joslin - a name some of you might recognize from Motive, Kilometer and VW Vortex.

We've seen the pilot issue of the print mag, and it looks and feels genuinely lovely. A non-traditional horizontal layout gives the photography room to breathe, with plenty of space to display cars in the way we see them in real life. What's more, if print-and-ink publishing just isn't your thing, GranTurismo also plans to offer digital versions for both your iPad and Android tablet.

It isn't a secret that Maserati is planning a product expansion in an attempt sell 50,000 units annually by 2015, but the automaker hasn't officially announced just how it plans to do so. Yes, we've seen (and driven) the 2014 Quattroporte, checked out spy shots for the smaller Ghibli sedan and Maserati even confirmed the Levante name for its SUV, but a leaked document reported by CarScoop could shed some light on how the Italian automaker intends on carrying out its rapid growth.

According to the image, the new Ghibli and Levante models will considerably lower the entry price point for the Maserati brand with the sedan having a price range from around $72,000 up to just over the $100,000 mark, with the SUV starting at close to $80,000 and topping out at almost $200,000. It also looks like the GranTurismo and GranCabrio will be getting redesigned in the near future at which point the new Gran Sport model will be added to the mix - otherwise known as the which often-rumored sports car with which Maserati will do battle with the Porsche 911.
Leak confirms Maserati product plans, five new models originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 28 Dec 2012 17:44:00 EST.
Yes, the 2013 Maserati GranCabrio MC is yet another variation on the GranTurismo song and dance, but we won't be the ones to hold it against the convertible. The Italian automaker threw in a revised, more aggressive front fascia, and the new nose helps stretch the convertible's overall length by nearly two inches. That's some overhang. The GranCabrio also features reworked adaptive headlights with LED daytime running lights, and a rear spoiler that produces more downforce than the standard issue kit is part of the mix as well.

Inside, the Maserati GranCabrio MC delivers redesigned seats up front, which offer more bolstering and can be hewn from carbon fiber for extra coin. And the new design helps the machine deliver a bit more rear legroom out back.

Buyers can expect to be met with the same 4.7-liter V8 as found in the GranTurismo Sport.

Isn't Maserati one of those brands we're always rooting for despite the odds? It's a whole lot like Alfa Romeo in this regard; we root and root for them to turn some magic corner that will signal a huge breakthrough with buyers and trigger a sweet reconnection with a glorious past of which we are so frequently reminded.

But the return to any true and powerful worldwide Ferrari-like glory just lingers out there, seemingly always a couple of years off. That the company is owned by Fiat is mostly a blessing, but it also engenders a set of sensitive political hurdles given the awkward banter between the Trident, the Biscione (the snake in Alfa's logo) and the Prancing Horse.

And then this Sport update to one of the two models built in Maserati's Modena precincts quietly emerges, we drive it as it really ought to be driven, and it's enough to have us cheering again. How can all the world not get behind a car so sexy as the Maserati GranTurismo and command people in that price bracket to buy the damned thing? It just seems wrong - and downright un-Italian - that such coercion isn't allowed. Yet surely the ongoing Maserati situation is the result of other things not going quite right beneath its corporate skin.
Continue reading 2013 Maserati GranTurismo Sport

2013 Maserati GranTurismo Sport originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 11 Jul 2012 11:57:00 EST.
Spec racing series are emerging as an indispensable way for exotic automakers to show what their vehicles can do without the constraints of road regulations, and for their top customers to race wheel-to-wheel on some of the most famous racing circuits in the world behind the wheel of top machinery. Ferrari has the Challenge series, Lamborghini the Blancpain Super Trofeo, Porsche operates several iterations of the Carrera Cup around the world, and Maserati has the Trofeo World Series.

Now entering its third year, the Trofeo is campaigned by a field of specially prepared versions of the GranTurismo coupe, which has been upgraded with several improvements for the season ahead. Maserati Corse has both optimized the aerodynamic setup and trimmed the car's weight, resulting in an average lap time that proved two and a half seconds faster around the Vallelunga circuit outside Rome over last year's car during winter testing.

Whereas previous series have been held almost exclusively in Europe or in the Middle East, this year's Trofeo World Series adds rounds at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, California, and the Shanghai International Circuit that hosts the Chinese Grand Prix after the returning races at Jarama, Spain (next weekend), Portimao, Portugal (in early June), Imola, Italy (late June), and Paul Ricard, France (in July).

Maserati Corse provides the full motorsport experience to gentlemen racers for €110,000 ($140K) for the full season or €70,000 ($90K) for just the European races, including use of the car. Teams owning and fielding their own cars pay €35,000 ($45K) or €25,000 ($32K), respectively. Scroll down for the full press release and check out the latest machinery in the high-res image gallery above.
Continue reading Maserati upgrades GranTurismo racer for 2012 Trofeo MC World Series

Maserati upgrades GranTurismo racer for 2012 Trofeo MC World Series originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 16 May 2012 09:02:00 EST.
A replacement for the aging GranTurismo is still a few years out, so in an effort to keep the model line fresh, Maserati has released this all new Sport trim here at the Geneva Motor Show. Essentially replacing the GranTurismo S, the Sport falls directly in between the base car and the hardcore MC.

The most significant change is a boost in power from the 4.7-liter naturally aspirated V8. This free-breathing engine now produces 460 horsepower - up from 434 - which now puts it at the top of the GranTurismo power range. Of course, that means we can expect a more powerful MC to debut in the near future.

Exterior changes include a more aggressive front fascia with large air intakes flanking the pronounced grille. Additionally, the headlamps and taillamps have been smoked and LED running lights have been incorporated into the GT's eyes. Inside, there are new sport seats and a revised steering wheel.

It may ride on old bones, but the new GranTurismo Sport's enhancements are enough to keep the giant coupe exciting for the near term.
Continue reading 2012 Maserati GranTurismo Sport won't make you blue

2012 Maserati GranTurismo Sport won't make you blue originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 07 Mar 2012 14:57:00 EST.
Introduced five years ago, we wouldn't go so far as to say the Maserati GranTurismo is old, but it is getting up there. The Modenese automaker is said to be planning a replacement once the pair of new Quattroportes are ready, but for now, the aggressively curvaceous coupe is to soldier on. And so to tide it over, Maserati is releasing the tempting new version you see here.

Called the GranTurismo Sport, the newest addition to the family replaces the GranTurismo S, slotting in between the base GranTurismo and the more hardcore GranTurismo MC.

The biggest upgrade is found under the engine, where the 4.7-liter V8 has been boosted from 434 horsepower to 460 - sixteen more horses than found in the MC and GranCabrio Sport, which we'd expect to be upgraded in due course, as well.

A revised fascia also follows the lead of the more aggressive MC, with larger air apertures on either side of the front grille, complemented by LED headlamps with darkened taillights to match. Meanwhile, the interior has also been retrofitted with new seats front and rear and a new steering wheel.

The GranTurismo Sport will make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in just a couple of weeks from now, but in the meantime you can check out the pair of high-resolution images below and the press release after the jump.
Continue reading Maserati releases new GranTurismo Sport ahead of Geneva debut

Maserati releases new GranTurismo Sport ahead of Geneva debut originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 20 Feb 2012 13:58:00 EST. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the coupes may have been assembled with a defective rear lamp assembly. The lights could then fail to illuminated, potentially causing an accident. NHTSA says Maserati will replace the units free of charge once the campaign begins this month. The recall covers 1,768 Granturismo models.

Last year, Maserati recalled 763 Quattraporte and Granturismo models over faulty tie-rod ends, which could have led to a total loss of vehicle control. Click past the jump for the full NHTSA recall report.
The song that made Will Smith famous - this is when he was The Fresh Prince who rapped and not acted - is called "Parents Just Don't Understand." In it, he takes his mom's Porsche for an unauthorized spin while his parents are on vacation, unintentionally picks up a 12-year-old runaway and then gets busted by the cops for doing 90 mph and not having a driver's license. The point of it all? Kids will do the darndest things.

Need another example? The Sydney Morning Herald reports that a ten-year-old kid in Hong Kong may have been been channeling his own fresh prince when he took his dad's Maserati GranTurismo for an unauthorized, license-less drive. He couldn't even get out of the building's parking lot without hitting another car, but kept on driving out and down the street until someone noticed him and called the police. He was arrested, and is now out on bail.

Due back in court this month, he potentially faces a seven-year prison sentence for theft and driving without a license, although no one expects that to happen. In the classic Will Smith jam, our hero gets a tag-team whipping in the car when his parents retrieve him from jail. The ten-year-old should hope his parents, and the Hong Kong judge, are just as understanding.
10-year-old Hong Kong boy crashes dad's Maserati, out on bail originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 13 Jan 2012 08:30:00 EST.
We like us some matte finish here at Autoblog, but we have to admit that the usual smattering of matte black vinyl wraps leave us a bit in the dark. That's why our eyes pop just a little wider when we see a car that cuts the glare but keeps the palette. That's also why the storied brands of the Fiat group are getting top marks in our books these days.

At the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, the group's top brand Ferrari showed off a concept 599 with regenerative braking and a delicious matte green finish. The following year at the same venue, Alfa Romeo lifted the veil on the tempting 4C Concept in a beautiful shade of matte red. And at the Bologna Motor Show earlier this month, their sister brand Maserati showcased this special GranTurismo in matte blue.

The car in question is a unique GranTurismo S Limited Edition exclusive to the Italian market, limited to only twelve examples to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Italian unification. It also packs carbon spoilers front and rear, as well as carbon side mirrors and door handles, with matte black side skirts and headlamps, and black 20-inch rims with polished aluminum brake calipers. Check it out in the press release after the jump and the high-res images in the gallery for a closer look.
Continue reading Maserati hits the matte with exclusive GranTurismo S Limited Edition

Maserati hits the matte with exclusive GranTurismo S Limited Edition originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 25 Dec 2011 20:01:00 EST.
The Maserati GranTurismo MC sounds every bit as spectacular as it looks. Its twin sport exhaust pipes, brazened a bronze hue from the intolerable heat of combustion, sing out the V8's tunes with the quickness and expert pitch change of an overcaffeinated Luciano Pavarotti.

At idle, the note is a frenzied rasp that seems to travel a distance before exiting the oversized pipes a foot above the pavement. During steady-state cruise, the sound is mellow, deep and threatening. Under full throttle it wails, screaming as the pressurized sound waves resonate off the tubular stainless steel walls of the muffler. And during deceleration it deliberately pops, cackles and burps as the engine ferociously fights its internal compression.

The sound will move your soul.

It is still morning in San Diego, and we have a full day with the new 2012 GranTurismo MC and its sibling the 2012 GranTurismo Convertible Sport. Life? It's good.
Continue reading 2012 Maserati GranTurismo MC and GranTurismo Convertible Sport

2012 Maserati GranTurismo MC and GranTurismo Convertible Sport originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 26 Sep 2011 11:57:00 EST.
A modern Maserati is as much a fashion statement as it is a performance machine, and the Modenese automaker aptly demonstrated that much with the latest edition of the GranCabrio.

Called the GranTurismo Convertible on this Western side of the Atlantic, the massive four-seat droptop is about as chic as it gets. But to make it even more so, Maserati has teamed up with fashion powerhouse Fendi to turn out what will undoubtedly prove an even greater must-have motorized fashion accessory than the Fiat 500 by Gucci.

We cozied up to the Fendi edition here at the Frankfurt Motor Show, where it make its debut alongside the Kubang SUV concept on Maserati's show stand in the Italian pavilion of the Messe. The collaboration between fashion houses and automakers is a longstanding tradition. Think Nautica edition Mercury Villager, Eddie Bauer edition Ford Explorer, or most recently, the Gucci edition Fiat 500. Now its big brother Maserati is getting in on the action with the Fendi edition GranCabrio - the droptop known as the GranTurismo Convertible on this side of the Atlantic.

Set to be unveiled next month at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the GranCabrio Fendi is distinguished by such unique touches as a special dark gray paint with flecks of gold, special leather and wood trim in the cabin, yellow highlights inside and out, a fitted leather luggage set (similar to the set previously offered by rival clothier Salvatore Ferragamo) and the requisite special badges.

The individually-numbered special edition, well-appointed as it looks, is sure to be popular with the affluent boulevard cruiser set in locales ranging from Rodeo Drive to Monte Carlo. We'll have the up-close-and-personal for you live from the Frankfurt show floor, but in the meantime, you can check out the images in the gallery and the full press release after the jump for more details.
Continue reading Maserati teams up with Fendi for special edition GranCabrio

Maserati teams up with Fendi for special edition GranCabrio originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 23 Aug 2011 13:01:00 EST.
Maserati is recalling Quattroporte and GranTurismo vehicles from the 2009 model year over poorly machined rear tie-rods that could fail. The loss of rear tie-rods is not something to be taken lightly - nothing like rear suspension destruction to soil your luxurious driving experience. The recall should begin next month and affects a total of 763 cars.

The affected cars were built between July and September of 2008. Maserati dealers will replace the shoddy tie-rods, install a tie-rod kit and do a wheel alignment. Of course, the repairs won't cost Maserati owners a cent.
Maserati Quattroporte and GranTurismo recalled over tie-rods originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 15 Aug 2011 11:01:00 EST.
In July of 2011, Maserati announced we would be receiving the hotted-up GranTurismo Convertible Sport here in the States. Known as the GranCabrio Sport elsewhere around the world, this beautiful droptop is packed with a more powerful version of the mill found in the GranTurismo S.

Between the svelte fenders sits a 4.7-liter V8 engine that produces 444 horsepower, 380 pound-feet of torque and noises that invoke autonomic physiological responses directly stoking our limbic system. Want to stoke your own limbic system? Click past the jump... first, just make sure your boss isn't watching.
Continue reading Maserati GranTurismo Convertible Sport is barely safe for work

Maserati GranTurismo Convertible Sport is barely safe for work originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 04 Aug 2011 14:59:00 EST.
Maserati has done a heck of a job expanding its two model lines to suit a variety of tastes. Say, for example, you're looking for a two-door grand tourer... then the GranTurismo is clearly your machine. More power? There's the GranTurismo S. Even more hardcore? The MC Stradale is your beast.

The downside for overseas buyers is that, unlike the GranTurismo MC for the North American market, the European-market MC Stradale ditches the lauded ZF-sourced automatic transmission for the more hardcore yet much-derided older sequential gearbox. So for those looking for something a bit more sporty than the GranTurismo S but one step shy of the MC Stradale, Maserati's British division has just announced the availability of a new Sport Pack.

Based on the GranTurismo S, the Sport Pack retains the same 434-horsepower 4.7-liter V8, but a new exhaust system has been fitted and the automatic transmission's software has been recalibrated for a more sporting experience. There's also a fresh aero pack and a series of cosmetic tweaks, all of which you can see in the gallery above and the press release after the jump.
Continue reading Maserati bridges the gap with GranTurismo S Sport Pack in the UK

Maserati bridges the gap with GranTurismo S Sport Pack in the UK originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 04 Aug 2011 08:59:00 EST.
It's hard to make a car as sinister-looking as the Maserati GranTurismo even more so. Maserati itself managed to do that with the GranTurismo MC Stradale, and now Anderson Germany has taken a crack at it with this new blacked-out GranTurismo S.

The aptly named Superior Black Edition swaps elements like the stock hood and mirrors in favor of carbon-fiber replacements, has an interior dressed in ample helpings of carbon and Alcantara, and is wrapped in matte black vinyl that contrasts the glossy 21-inch wheels. A lowered suspension contributeBacking up the evil looks is a massaged version of the GranTurismo's Ferrari-sourced 4.7-liter V8, which now belts out 492 horsepower.

Scope it out in the attached image gallery and read all the details the press release after the jump.
Continue reading Superior Black Edition GranTurismo S knows the power of the Dark Side

Superior Black Edition GranTurismo S knows the power of the Dark Side originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 31 Jul 2011 17:04:00 EST. First up is the GranTurismo MC that packs the same aggressive aerodynamically optimized bodywork as the more hardcore GranTurismo MC Stradale available overseas, but with four seats instead of two and a torque-converter six-speed ZF automatic instead of the sequential paddle-shifter.

Also reaching our shores is the GranTurismo Convertible Sport, which is the same as the GranCabrio Sport sold overseas, just with a different name. (Apparently the Modense automaker doesn't feel those on this side of the Atlantic know what a cabrio is.)

Now here's the juicy bit: both the MC and Convertible Sport pack the more powerful version of the 4.7-liter V8 with 444 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque. The 2012 Maserati GranTurismo MC carries a base price of $139,900 in the U.S., while the 2012 Maserati GranTurismo Convertible Sport goes for $147,500.
