Wagonmaster has made a name for itself restoring and selling factory-perfect Jeep Grand Wagoneer models, bridging the gap between when the last production machine rolled off the line in 1991 and present day. The company's efforts haven't gone unnoticed. The entire Jeep product planning team took a little field trip to the company's facility in Kerrville, Texas back in December, and they weren't just there to take in the sights. According to owner Leon Miller's son, Chip Miller, the Jeep team was there to do research for the successor to the Grand Wagoneer throne.

"They have the very best intentions of rolling out a seven-passenger vehicle," Miller said.

A total of six members from the Chrysler team showed up, including Joe Veltri, the vice president of product planning, Todd Breneiser, director of product planning for utility vehicles and MPVs, Matt Nyquist, senior manager of product planning for full-size utility vehicles and Tony Carroll, Jeep brand manager. Jeep Engineering Program Manager Todd Teasdale and Bob Kwiecinski, Jeep product planning manager were also on hand to pour over the 20 pristine Grand Wagoneers at Wagonmaster. Keep reading below to see how it went.
Continue reading Jeep team takes a field trip to Wagonmaster; researching next Grand Wagoneer?

Jeep team takes a field trip to Wagonmaster; researching next Grand Wagoneer? originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 01 Feb 2013 14:58:00 EST.
Big changes are in store for the Jeep brand, bringing in models from both the Dodge and Fiat brands, according to an Automotive News report. In addition to new powertrains aimed at improving fuel economy, it appears that Fiat models will underpin new vehicles that will replace some less-capable offerings from the iconic off-road brand.

The biggest change is the yet-to-be named Fiat model that is likely to be based on the new Panda 4x4. According to AN, it will be built alongside the Fiat 500X in Turin, Italy. No name has been given to this model, but it has been confirmed that it will have at least one trail-rated variant.

Elsewhere in the lineup, the Dodge Durango three-row SUV is set to be replaced with an all-new full-size model, possibly called the Grand Wagoneer. This model would compete with the Chevrolet Suburban. The Grand Cherokee, meanwhile, will get the much-anticipated 3.0-liter diesel engine (we also hope it may wind up in the Wrangler).

The standard Cherokee name is likely coming back as the moniker to replace the Liberty. It could be powered by a new 3.2-liter V6 and underpinned by a Fiat platform that it would share with the Dodge Dart - the first Jeep to do so. This new model would come in early 2013 as a 2014 model.

Jeep's soft-roading crossovers, the Compass and Patriot, are set to receive a new six-speed automatic transmission, replacing the CVT currently under the hood. Only one of these nameplates is likely to survive past 2014.

Jeep has been reached for confirmation or denial of this report, but declined to comment on future product.
Jeep Cherokee and Grand Wagoneer to return originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 11 Sep 2012 08:00:00 EST.
The Jeep product portfolio will undergo some major changes in the next few years, starting with the addition of a new subcompact crossover and a flagship, seven-passenger Grand Wagoneer. Still, Jeep assures the world that even with these changes, the automaker will still stand true to its off-road heritage. That seven-slat grille has to stand for something, after all.

Jeep will debut a new subcompact crossover based on a Fiat platform in late 2013 or early 2014. The B-Jeep will be designed for use in North and Latin America, and will be built alongside the Fiat 500 and Dodge Journey at the automaker's plant in Toluca, Mexico.

Both the Compass and Patriot will be replaced in one fell swoop with a new vehicle based on Fiat's CUSW compact crossover platform. The new Jeep will debut in 2013, likely as a 2014 model, and will be built for global markets, including North America. In speaking to Automotive News, Jeep brand CEO Michael Manley said that this vehicle would be available with both front- and all-wheel drive.

The Liberty - a vehicle left untouched in the 2011 model year product onslaught - will get a replacement in 2013. This crossover will be built on a larger version of the Compass/Patriot platform, called CUSW Plus, and will likely remain an all-wheel-drive-only affair.

Lastly, a new Grand Wagoneer is still in the works, stemming from Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne's confirmation earlier this year. Its platform will be shared with the Dodge Durango and will be the flagship model in the Jeep lineup. Think Commander, only better. Much better.
Fiat platform to underpin three Jeeps originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 09 Aug 2011 17:29:00 EST.
Sergio Marchionne, CEO of Chrysler, has reportedly just announced his plans to bring an old American nameplate back to life. According to Automotive News, in two years time, Jeep will roll out a seven-seat SUV and its badge will read: Grand Wagoneer. According to Marchionne, it will be an upscale, seven-seat sport utility vehicle built on the same platform as the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango.

The Jeep Grand Wagoneer is slated to make its first appearance in January 2013, though whether that will be in conceptual or production form, we're not yet sure.

Jeep Grand Wagoneer Limo - Click above for high-res image gallery

There will always be something special about the Jeep Grand Wagoneer that keeps the original Sport Utility Vehicle entrenched firmly on our list of truly iconic American automobiles. Somehow, despite the old-school design and fake wood paneling, the GW manages to look both classy and capable at once.

Though we'll take our Grand Wagoneer exactly as God and American Motors intended, we think this stretched limo-spec Woodie is rather tastefully done as well. If nothing else, it's far cooler that any stretched-to-the-hilt Hummer H2 we've ever laid eyes on. According to the seller (the original ad can be found here), this model is an '87 and features the trusty 360 cubic inch V8 engine, automatic transmission and the requisite four-wheel drive.

It looks to be in good shape inside and out, as it should with just over 43,000 miles showing on the clock. As an added bonus, this Grand Wagoneer sports an attractive black exterior, a fake forest's worth of wood paneling and a very nice tan interior. Take it home for $24,900. Just be sure to replace those awful wheels with something more appropriate... like stock steelies with chrome trim rings.
It's a HEMI-powered 2004 Dodge Durango chassis that's been shortened and strengthened wearing the body of a 1988 Jeep Grand Wagoneer - early SUV looks with late model technology and capability. The Durangoneer was built as a project car for Popular Mechanics and was apparently at this year's SEMA Show in Las Vegas, but we must've walked right by it. It's understandable, though, since it takes a few seconds to realize you're not actually looking at an '88 Wagoneer. The Durangoneer is being auctioned off next month at RM Auction's annual "Vintage Motor Cars in Arizona" auction on January 19th. What's more, any cash this thing brings in over and above $35,000 will be donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Follow the jump for more pics and a press release that contains additional info on the Duragoneer.

[Source: RM Auctions]
Continue reading Auction Action: 2006 Durangoneer on the block

Auction Action: 2006 Durangoneer on the block originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 18 Dec 2006 19:26:00 EST. In 2002, Flickr user TennesseeWagon's requirements were simple: he wanted an all-original Grand Wagoneer with low miles, no rust, and in running condition. $2,500 and one sketchy used car salesman later, he had his ride. The white '88 Grand Wagoneer was the fulfillment of a dream, as he had coveted one of the classic luxo-SUVs ever since he first set eyes on one.

And the car remains with him today. TennesseeWagon hasn't made any mods or upgrades to the truck, as he wants to keep it as original as possible. After all, he says, it's perfect right out of the box, so why mess with it? All the work he's performed are standard repairs or cosmetic fixes. The big Jeep lives in the garage alongside a '98 Wrangler that acts as a daily driver. If TennesseeWagon needs to tow his boat (which he says you can't even see behind the Wagoneer) or haul a bunch of friends, the 360 V8 gets fired up and out it goes.

Some rides remain stylish forever. This is one of them, and it was an easy pick for today's Reader Ride of the Day. Follow the jump for two more shots of it.

As mentioned previously, we won't be having a theme for this week's RR of the Day, but next week, it's on. Submit your turbocharged and supercharged vehicles to our Flickr pool by following the directions after the jump. We want to see them all, whether it's a home-brewed Civic hatch or a modded Cummins diesel, all are welcome
during Forced Induction Week.

Continue reading RR of the Day: 1988 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

RR of the Day: 1988 Jeep Grand Wagoneer originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 29 Nov 2006 14:41:00 EST.
