When are stripes more than just stripes? Follow up question: Is the product development team at Chevrolet really cocky enough to hide the next C7 Corvette variant in plain sight? This very recently spotted, and ostensibly obscured C7 asks a lot more questions than it answers, but there's at least some evidence to support that it might be the next Corvette Grand Sport.

The first and most obvious tip-off that something is up with this 'Vette revolves around those silver stripes. Obviously the stripes themselves don't necessarily denote a new model. However, when Chevy recently launched its "colorizer" website for the Stingray, there was no provision made for racing stripes - solid colors only.

Grand Sport exhibit number two is actually an incriminating lack of badges. The production Corvettes we've seen to date have all carried Stingray badges on their fenders, just behind the vent. The car seen in these images has no such badges, which is an intriguing omission on an car that looks like a production-spec vehicle otherwise.

The last clue is a subtle one, picked up on by the same spy photographers that have been following C7 prototypes around for ages now. There's a full car cover in the cargo area of the Corvette in these photos - that's an item that all of the other prototype 'Vettes carried as standard equipment - to thoroughly hide them from prying eyes when they needed to be parked outside.

Any one of these differences spotted on a manufacturer-driven 2014 Corvette would be easily brushed off as an anomaly, but taken as a whole there could be something else there. What say you? Is this the next Corvette Grand Sport we're looking at, or just some stripes and a pile of wishes? Share your thoughts, in comments.
Are you the 2014 Corvette Grand Sport? originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 21 Feb 2013 15:28:00 EST.

After ripping around in the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 supercar and enjoying every tire-shredding moment, we were worried that the Corvette Grand Sport Coupe, its lesser sibling, would be a letdown. We were very wrong. Chevrolet has made sure its Corvette Grand Sport deliberately lacks the supercharger and bad-boy displacement of its big brothers, but its masterfully-tuned 6.2-liter V8 is nothing to laugh at, boasting 430 horsepower and 424 pound-feet of torque.

Power is more than abundant, and the soundtrack sent chills down our hardened spines (for best results, remove the silencing exhaust flapper fuse - it takes about three minutes).

Thanks to a close-ratio six-speed manual transmission (a 6AT is optional) and a limited-slip differential, this two-door will blast to 60 mph in about four seconds flat. Top speed, about 190 mph, is fast enough to lift a loaded commercial jetliner off the ground.

Our coupe, a 4LT model, arrived decked out in Arctic White paint with 60th Anniversary Design and 60th Anniversary Stripe packages. Some may consider the celebratory packages a bit gaudy, but it garnered more than a few compliments from passer-bys.

The Corvette's cabin might be getting woefully dated, but our car's diamond-blue leather upholstery helped this C6's cabin look about as good as we've ever seen it.

Taming a big American V8 isn't easy, but Chevrolet has done an excellent job. Upgraded with GM's Active Handling, unique body components and a higher, wider rear spoiler, our car also featured the Z52 Performance Package (bundled with a track-ready dry-sump oil system, differential cooler, sticky Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar tires and larger cross-drilled brakes).

While the Grand Sport starts at $56,000, our as-tested price, including the must-have Magnetic Selective Ride Control (magnetorheological shocks) and some other options, was about $70,340.

Despite being down a couple of hundred horsepower, we found the Grand Sport Coupe slightly more enjoyable than the ZR1 on public roads - its power is simply more useable. We could more easily put our foot to the floor coming out of the corners without worrying about kissing a guardrail or an immobile tree. The steering is razor-sharp, and the brakes and suspension were easily up to everything we could throw at them.

For maximum pleasure, enjoy the 2013 Corvette Grand Sport Coupe sans roof panel and with all the windows down. We did, often.

It takes a lot to grow jaded at the thought of a one-of-a-kind, seven-figure, record-breaking supercar, but that's what's happened after this many years of special edition Bugattis. The latest: a unique version of the Grand Sport roadster created for the Beijing Motor Show and one lucky (read: obscenely wealthy) customer.

Called the Wei Long edition, this one-off Veyron celebrates the Year of the Dragon. It was born out of the same collaboration with Königliche Porzellan Manufaktur that gave us the previous blue-and-white marbled Grand Sport L'Or Blanc edition. Only this one is white with red trim.

Like what you see? It can be yours for €1.58 million - chump change over two million greenbacks. Scope it out in the high-res image gallery and the press release below.
Continue reading Bugatti unveils one-off porcelain-trimmed Veyron Grand Sport Wei Long edition in Beijing

Bugatti unveils one-off porcelain-trimmed Veyron Grand Sport Wei Long edition in Beijing originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 24 Apr 2012 14:29:00 EST.
Fastest roadster ever. That's one heck of a claim, but if anyone can assert it, it's Bugatti. And the Alsatian automaker has brought 1,200 horsepower to back it up.

What we're talking about, of course, is the Vitesse - the "best of both worlds" version of the famed Veyron. First announced in February and officially unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show last week, the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse (as it's known in full) has just had its full details released along with a fresh batch of rather fetching high-resolution images, which we've included in our gallery for your viewing pleasure.

So what are we looking at here, exactly? In short, a Grand Sport (that's the targa-topped model) with the engine from the Super Sport (the record-holding top-speed model). That means a quad-turbo W-16 engine with 1,200 horsepower, good for a 255 mph top speed with the wind in your hair.

That, for comparison's sake, is incrementally faster than the 253 mph top end of the "base" Veyron, yet slower than the 267 mph of the Super Sport with the same engine and a fixed roof. Crucially, however, it's faster than the 229 mph top end of the 1,001hp Veyron Grand Sport roadster. Want to know more? There's plenty to digest in the full press release and spec sheet after the jump.
Continue reading Bugatti opens up about Veyron Vitesse with more details, images

Bugatti opens up about Veyron Vitesse with more details, images originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 13 Mar 2012 16:00:00 EST.
You have to applaud an automaker like Bugatti. Not content with being second place in the production car top speed category, the automaker created the monstrous Veyron Super Sport which, with a top tested speed of 267.81 miles per hour, holds the record for the world's fastest production coupe. Now, here at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, Bugatti has officially debuted the next chapter of its top speed world domination story, because why settle for just having the world's fastest coupe when you can have the world's fastest convertible, too?

Meet the Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse. It's a pretty simple (yet technically astounding) package: Take the 1,200-horsepower, 8.0-liter, quad-turbocharged W16 from the Veyron Super Sport and fit it under the hood of the roofless Grand Sport. Vitesse nomenclature aside (that's French for 'speed', by the way), just think of this as a Super Grand Sport.

Bugatti states that the Grand Sport Vitesse is the most powerful production roadster of all time, and once this thing hits the street, it'll surely be the fastest, too. "Once again our engineers worked hard to demonstrate that Bugatti is able to constantly redefine the boundaries of what is technically feasible," states the automaker's President, Wolfgang Dürheimer.

You've seen the Grand Sport. You've seen the Super Sport. Now meet the Super Grand Sport.

Actually, Bugatti calls its latest version of the Veyron the Vitesse - French for "speed" - but it is essentially a combination of the best traits of the Grand Sport and Super Sport models. The Grand Sport, as you may recall, is the convertible (or targa) version of the Alsatian supercar, while the Super Sport is the more powerful, record-breaking version.

As expected, Molsheim has taken the 1,200-horsepower version of the Veyron's engine - all eight liters, sixteen cylinders, four turbochargers and (while we're counting) ten radiators of it - from the Super Sport and combined it with the open-top body-style of the Grand Sport. The result is what Bugatti calls (and we have every reason to believe is indeed) the most powerful production roadster of all time, and with time, it will undoubtedly prove the fastest too.

In the meantime, Bugatti plans to unveil its newest seven-figure model at the rapidly approaching Geneva Motor Show, but you can check it out now in the pair of high-resolution images below and the press release after the jump.
Continue reading Bugatti presents new Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse for Geneva debut

Bugatti presents new Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse for Geneva debut originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 22 Feb 2012 10:29:00 EST.
Every year, masses of Corvette aficionados descend upon a little town in Pennsylvania to celebrate their love of the long-running Chevrolet sports car. Here in Las Vegas at the 2011 SEMA Show, General Motors has decided to show its appreciation for the legions of Carlisle travelers with the Carlisle Blue Grand Sport Concept.

We don't know if Chevy plans to offer this color scheme on production Corvettes, but we hope it does. The exterior is painted in a hue called Carlisle Blue, and it's punctuated by Pearl White racing stripes and silver-painted Torque 2 wheels. We also like the Cyber Gray headlamps that are optional for 2012. What we like most, however, is the dry-sump 6.2-liter LS3 V8 under the hood. Feel free to peruse our image gallery, then check out the press release after the break.
Continue reading Chevrolet Carlisle Blue Grand Sport Concept celebrates Pennsylvania pride

Chevrolet Carlisle Blue Grand Sport Concept celebrates Pennsylvania pride originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 01 Nov 2011 17:31:00 EST.
Just how much sport can you dial in to the Bugatti Veyron? It looks like we're about to find out.

In one corner we have the Veyron Grand Sport, the targa-roofed roadster of the epic supercar. In the other, the Veyron Super Sport, the even more powerful version that claims the record for the fastest production automobile. Where they meet is what we anticipated just last week, and could be what we see in this fresh batch of spy shots: the Bugatti Veyron Grand Super Sport. Or Super Grand Sport. Or Super-Duper Sport.

We'll have to wait to find out what it'll be called, but we're expecting output from the quad-turbo, sixteen-cylinder engine to come in somewhere in between the Grand Sport's 1,000 and the Super Sport's 1,200. If you didn't need a toupée before, you probably will after unleashing that much power on your bare scalp.
Bugatti testing hotter Veyron Grand Sport SS originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 22 Aug 2011 13:00:00 EST.
Long after the Bugatti Veyron will have sped off into the history books, we'll still be unraveling the convoluted web of all the associated special editions it spawned.

One such example has just come to light and to the market. Like the similarly-named Sang Noir and Sang Bleu, this one-of-a-kind Sang Blanc edition is characterized by its color. In this case, that means a special matte white finish with contrasting black trim and interior. It's based on the Grand Sport, so it's also got the removable roof panel to let everyone around see who the special driver is.

Despite being a left-hand-drive model, the Sang Blanc is currently located in the UK. Asking price is available only upon request, though you can bet that seven-figure line of credit will evaporate as quickly as this car accelerates. Follow the link to the listing for more.
One-off Bugatti Veyron Sang Blanc up for sale originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 06 Aug 2011 10:05:00 EST.
Buying a new Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport will set you back over $1.7 million. That's a whole lot of scratch, so what do you get in return? Well, a 1,000-horsepower quad-turbo sixteen-cylinder engine, to start off with. And all the bragging rights that go along with it. You get the most prestigious badge in the business. And you get two roofs.

The Grand Sport, you see, is not your typical convertible. Rather than incorporating some sort of cloth, glass or metal roof that folds down behind the seats at the push of a button, it has a sort of targa-style solid panel that can be installed or removed depending on weather conditions. But if you're out in the sun and the skies suddenly begin to darken, there's a second roof that can be put in place in case of an emergency.

The trouble is, much as Richard Hammond of Top Gear discovered with the Lamborghini Murciélago Roadster, the makeshift umbrella assembly isn't quite so easy to install in a pinch. In fact - bearing in mind that the Veyron only has two seats - it took three guys in the video after the jump a few minutes to figure it out. Or then maybe they're just not the brightest of fellas. Either way, you can follow the jump to watch them try.
Continue reading Assembling the Bugatti Grand Sport's umbrella roof is as easy as 1, 2, 3 (people)

Assembling the Bugatti Grand Sport's umbrella roof is as easy as 1, 2, 3 (people) originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 18 Jul 2011 12:30:00 EST.
We've seen all sorts of materials used in automotive construction. Steel, aluminum, titanium, fiberglass, carbon fiber... even ceramics. But this is a first.

Teaming up with Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur, Bugatti has created the one-off Veyron "L'Or Blanc" you see here. Its name means "white gold", and the special Grand Sport uses porcelain to distinguish its body and interior in high swirly style.

The result, as you can see, is quite stunning, and anything but conventional. Only this one example will be made, with an asking price of €1.65 million - equivalent to $2.4 million at today's exchange rates. Check it out in the high-res image gallery and the press release after the jump.
Continue reading Bugatti unwraps one-of-a-kind porcelain-trimmed Veyron L'Or Blanc

Bugatti unwraps one-of-a-kind porcelain-trimmed Veyron L'Or Blanc originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 30 Jun 2011 16:30:00 EST.
Pahrump, Nevada is a smallish city in the acute, southern tip of Nevada. The population is roughly 70,000 and most of it, when behind the wheel, sticks to the posted speed limits of anywhere between 25 and 45 miles per hour. At any given time, however, a handful of drivers will be doing well beyond those numbers. They are the temporary residents who have shacked up at Spring Mountain Raceway for the Ron Fellows Performance Driving School.

Free tuition is just one of the many perks that comes with purchasing a ZR1.

Set up to teach drivers how to get the best out of their own driving and, if they happen to own one, the best out of America's sports car, it's one of just two official Corvette schools in the country. In fact, free tuition is just one of the many perks (including building your own engine) that comes with purchasing the most almighty of all Corvettes, the ZR1. Within one year of taking delivery of your car, either at the dealership or the Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky, you can seek tutelage at no additional cost from Mr. Fellows, or attend Bob Bondurant's school in Phoenix. We sought our training in Nevada.

Being Nevada, it's hot. With Corvettes to train in, it's fast. And having been developed with Ron Fellows, it's thorough. It also happens to be a lot of fun. Continue reading...
Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport special edition for Shanghai - Click above for high-res image gallery

With a virtually endless array of color combinations available, there's really no reason any two examples of the Bugatti Veyron should ever be the same. And these latest two are no exception.

Unveiled at the Shanghai Motor Show this week, this pair of Veyrons feature unique color and trim combinations to make them stand out even from this rarefied crowd.

On one hand, we have a Grand Sport - the convertible version of the Veyron - trimmed out in matte white with blue carbon fiber, with a complementing blue interior with white stitching. On the other we have a Super Sport - the record-breaking 1,100-horsepower version of the Veyron - decked out in black lacquered carbon fiber and a cream interior.

Both stand as (very quickly) rolling testaments to the rather Orwellian notion that while every Veyron is special, some are more special than others. Scope 'em out in the gallery below and follow the jump for the full details in the press release.
The fifth installment of the Fast and the Furious series, Fast Five, is ready to debut this summer, unleashing another round of "nos"-fed hilarity. In anticipation of the promised vehicular mayhem, they guys at Inside Line caught up with Dennis McCarthy, the man behind the stable of hot rods featured in the movie.
The first is a one-off, tube-frame monstrosity of an offroad car hauler lovingly dubbed "Mongo." Mongo was designed to assist Vin Diesel and Paul Walker in filching exotic cars from a moving train. To our eyes, Mongo looks ready to do just that, sporting a 600-plus-horsepower 502-cubic-inch Chevrolet V8, 7:10 gears and 18 inches of suspension travel. According to McCarthy, Mongo did his own stunts, completing a 75-foot jump and driving away unscathed. Wow.

The next sample on today's palette is possibly the most famous car to come out of the Fast and the Furious franchise, Dom Toretto's 1970 Dodge Charger. Though the car in the film sports a 900-horsepower supercharged Hemi, keeping costs low dictated a slightly tamer set up for the actual workhorses of the film. In stuntman-ready trim, the Charger sported a 400-hp Chevy small block (sorry, Mopar fans...) capped by a gutted BDS blower just for effect. According to IL, it's loud, scary to drive and uncomfortable, just the way any self-respecting mock up should be.

The final car on the list is the star of the show, a replica of a 1965 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport, build by Mongoose Motorsports. It features the ubiquitous Chevrolet 502 big block, backed up by a Borg Warner Super T-10 four-speed stick. The combination rides on C3 Corvette suspension, which struggles to handle nearly 600 horses stuffed into a featherweight frame.

After weeks of abuse at the hands of Hollywood, none of the cars are feeling as healthy as they once were. That said, they all still run, which can't be said for hundreds of other cars used in the movie. Added to that, they'll all still burn up the rear tires with poise, showing they still have their dignity. Click past the jump to see all three cars in action.

Chevrolet is celebrating its 100th anniversary with a fitting tribute to racing driver turned entrepreneur, Louis Chevrolet. The brand's founding father raced in four Indianapolis 500s from 1915 to 1919, and though he never managed a victory, his motorsports expertise helped guide his car company from the outset.

In observance, the 2012 Chevrolet Centennial Edition Corvette gets a special coat of "Carbon Flash" black paint and carries logos on the B-pillars with the number 100 and a likeness of Mr. Chevrolet himself. Inside, there's plenty of Alcantara and contrasting red stitching to set off additional black trim, and the headrests are embossed with the same 100th anniversary logo as the B-pillars.

Outside, the Centennial Edition gets special 18 or 19-inch for the Grand Sport and standard Corvette and 19 or 20-inch rollers for the ZR-1 and Z06.

The Centennial Edition package is available on every Corvette model they sell, meaning you can get your Z06, ZR-1 or Grand Sport gussied up just the same as your standard coupe or convertible. All of the cars with the 100th anniversary package receive red painted brake calipers and Corvette's optional (and excellent) magnetically adjustable suspension.

The Centennial Edition Corvettes go on sale this summer, but the first one will be auctioned off by Barrett-Jackson tomorrow in West Palm Beach, Florida. Proceeds of the sale will go to the Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer.
There is an old axiom of hot rodding that still stands true today. You can only go so fast as your pockets are deep. We see quite a few outlandishly-tuned exotics come across our inboxes from one day to the next, each boasting supercar-besting power figures and price tags to match. It's much more rare to see a shop create a car with serious power, a warranty, and a price tag that seems like a performance value.

But that's exactly what Howard Tanner of Redline Motorsports and Dan Carlton of DeNooyer Performance have come up with in the Redline HTR-GS640/SC. Take your run-of-the-mill Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport with all of its factory handling, stopping and light-weight goodies, then throw a gamut of aftermarket go-fast parts at the engine. Tanner and Carlton bolt on an Edelbrock E-Force supercharger with long intake runners for big-time low-end torque. Throw in a new cam with more lift and duration, robust valve springs with titanium retainers and chromoly push rods. Ice that cake with a Borla exhaust and MGW short-throw shifter and you've got an $82,000 Corvette capable of popping the formerly almighty ZR1 in the eye.

DeNooyer Performance will even warranty the car for three years or 36,000 miles. Plus, you can remove the roof in the Redline HTR-GS640/SC. Not so much in the Blue Devil. Now if they could only come up with a sexier name for this blown Grand Sport... If you like what you see, Tanner and Carlton will be happy to put a set of keys in your hand. From what we hear, they even take trades and will work up financing. Check their site for more information.

European buyers looking to get their hands on a Corvette ZR1 may find them in short supply. Fortunately, GeigerCars is there to save the day with the next best thing. The German tuner of American iron has taken a crack at the Corvette Grand Sport and boosted it to near-ZR1 levels of power and performance.

Starting with the Grand Sport's 6.2-liter LS3 V8, Geiger bolts on a supercharger to increase output from the stock 430 horsepower to a prodigious 588, helping the Geiger GS hit 60 un under four seconds. That may not be quite as powerful or quick as the ZR1's supercar numbers, with its 638 horsepower and 3.3-second sprint, but it's nothing to scoff at, either.

Bugatti Grand Sport Cutaway - Click above for high-res image gallery

There's no doubt that the Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport is an impressive car just from looking at it, and it's even easier to sing its praises when you get to drive it. Bugatti has given us one more reason to be impressed here at the Geneva Motor Show with a cutaway version of its $1.2 million supercar. The car is divided into its two main sub-assemblies, showing off its carbon fiber structure and internal components.

Perhaps the most impressive thing about the car is how Bugatti managed to cram so much into so small a space. The Grand Sport is a relatively small car, and fitting an 8.0-liter W16 engine complete with four turbochargers into the space behind the rear seats was no small feat. The display shows just how Bugatti did it, though, and we walked away even more amazed at what went into packaging all the components of the car. You can see for yourself in the high-res gallery below.

As with any other business, in the automotive sphere, it's mission critical to recognize on which side your bread is buttered - particularly in lean times like these. Bugatti may be losing money on each Veyron it builds, but that doesn't mean that company strategists don't know how to earn a crust. Need proof? This month's Dubai Motor Show finds the supercar builder unveiling a trio of special edition models in one of its most important markets.

The Middle East triumvirate will consist of the Veyron Nocturne, which features "galvanized side windows" that add continuity to the polished aluminum body panel accents, and there are also polished wheels and a "black nanocoated magnesium dashboard" with a center console rendered in galvanized platinum. Just five examples will be built.

Bugatti will also show its Veyron "Sang d'Argent" and a topless Grand Sport "Soliel de Nuit" model for those that like a little sun and sand in their hair. The former of which employs a silver metallic finish and alloys nicked from the Grand Sport and the latter incorporates "country coded" colors that include a silver metallic lower and an impossibly deep upper blue finish and a Havanna interior with quilted seats.

If you're interested, well, have your accountant's accountant ring up Bugatti, and summon your garage keeper to ensure you've got some extra room available in the first quarter of 2010 for when you take delivery. Oh, and you'll have to liberate anywhere from 1.45 million euro ($2.1M USD) to 1.65 million euro ($2.5M) from your chaise lounge cushions for the privilege. Not up for it? Well, you can at least check out our high-res images below and the official press release after the jump.

The Chevy Camaro was SEMA's poster boy last year, but there were precious few of them on the ground once the doors opened. This year it looks like that won't be the case. The Bowtie will be presenting its own take on some of its cars, and in a little preview of the action it looks like there'll be at least a Corvette Grand Sport and few Camaros with lots of shiny bits -- including one with a glossy lime paint job and pinstripes. Gotta love SEMA... Follow the jump to see the preview.
