Every year the Formula One calendar incorporates new races at more far-flung locations around the world. Recent additions have brought the series to such locales as Abu Dhabi, South Korea and India. But the purists know that, no matter where it may roam, F1 is essentially a European series.

With the grands prix in Australia, Malaysia, China and Bahrain now behind us, the circus has come back home for the European section of the calendar that kicked off this weekend in Barcelona, Spain. Keep reading to see how it unfolded.
Continue reading A rookie challenges the champions at the 2012 Spanish Grand Prix [spoilers]

A rookie challenges the champions at the 2012 Spanish Grand Prix [spoilers] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 13 May 2012 20:33:00 EST.
At what point does a political issue become a moral one? And at what point, if any, should motor racing enter that debate? These are the questions that Formula 1 and all those involved have wrestled with since the Bahrain Grand Prix was put back on the calendar for this year.

Some argued that sporting competition should rise above such issues. Others decried the cold-heartedness of holding something as glitzy as an F1 race where government forces are brutally cracking down on protestors - particularly when the race itself is orchestrated by said government.

One way or another, however, the grand prix took place this weekend in Bahrain, entering the record books as the fourth round in this year's championship. Keep reading to find out how it unfolded.
Continue reading 2012 Bahrain Grand Prix races on despite the protests [spoilers]

2012 Bahrain Grand Prix races on despite the protests [spoilers] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 22 Apr 2012 15:03:00 EST.
The one point that Formula One racing's detractors dwell on more than others is the monotony. How a gaggle of high-revving, state-of-the-art race cars speeding around circuits in some of the most exotic locales in the world could be considered monotonous, of course, would leave others scratching their heads, but that's what the haters hate most. And not entirely without reason. After all, each championship season tends to be dominated by one driver or another.

2008 saw Lewis Hamilton of McLaren and Felipe Massa of Ferrari battle it out for the title until the very last turn of the the very last lap of the very last race of the season, but for many years before and every year since it's been utter domination: five years of Michael Schumacher, two of Fernando Alonso, Kimi Raikkonen in 2007, Jenson Button in 2009 and two years of Sebastian Vettel that bring us up to the present.

The question on every race fan's mind, then, is whether this year would again feature a single-team domination or whether we'd see another driver - or drivers - taking the lead. Heading out to Shanghai for this weekend's Chinese Grand Prix, only two races had already been decided, and each was won by a different man driving for a different team, and neither had won from pole. Would this round prove any different? Keep reading to find out.
Continue reading Shanghai'd at the 2012 Chinese Grand Prix [spoilers]

Shanghai'd at the 2012 Chinese Grand Prix [spoilers] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 15 Apr 2012 12:30:00 EST.
Formula 1 racing tends to work in cycles. One team is at the top for a year or two, then another emerges to dominate the next few. It's a trend that has seen the likes of Ferrari, McLaren, Renault (now known as Lotus) and even Brawn (today's Mercedes) win world championships, with Red Bull as the the most recent force to be reckoned with.

Red Bull, clearly the team to beat going into 2012, took the driver's and constructor's titles the last two years. The question is, could it defend them for the hat trick this season, or would a new frontrunner step up? The circus rolled in to Sepang, Malaysia this weekend for the second round of the 2012 Formula One World Championship. And it was a thriller. Follow the jump to read how it unfolded.
Continue reading 2012 Malaysian Grand Prix rains supreme [spoilers]

2012 Malaysian Grand Prix rains supreme [spoilers] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 25 Mar 2012 12:37:00 EST.
Today is the day that racing fans have been looking forward to. The cars have been unveiled, the drivers announced, the calendar confirmed and everything is in place. Today is race day.

After an off season that saw two teams resolve their naming-rights dispute, one driver sued by a team owner over a brawl in a Shanghai night-club, and the much-anticipated return of a former world champion, the 2012 Formula One World Championship got underway today in Melbourne with the Australian Grand Prix.

Every year, each Formula One team on the grid designs a brand-new car and builds a handful of them for use at grands prix around the world. So what happens to the old ones? Well, the less important ones might get scrapped, unfortunately. The more important ones might find their way into museum collections. But then there's a whole class of collectors who buy them for use at historic racing events or private track days.

Those collectors lust after opportunities like this one: to own a grand prix-winning car driven by a World Champion for a team no less celebrated than Scuderia Ferrari. This 1974 Ferrari 312 B3 was the very same that Niki Lauda drove to the checkered flag at the Dutch Grand Prix and Spanish Grand Prix that year. And while it would have been worth more if those races had helped Lauda secure the championship that year, unfortunately, a series of DNFs relegated him to fourth place in the standings, returning the following year to win his first title.

It's been one heck of a season in Formula One racing. Not since the days of Michael Schumacher at the pinnacle of his career with Ferrari have we seen the kind of domination that his fellow countryman Sebastian Vettel has smote upon the championship.

Leading into this weekend's final round in Brazil, Vettel had already won eleven out of eighteen rounds from fourteen pole positions. As a result he'd been crowned champion early on, and helped secure the constructors' title for his Red Bull Racing team as well. But would the young champ - the youngest multiple champion in F1 history, in fact - be able to tie up the season in as grand a style as he'd displayed all year? Follow the jump to find out.
Continue reading 2011 Brazilian Grand Prix wraps up the season at Interlagos [spoilers]

2011 Brazilian Grand Prix wraps up the season at Interlagos [spoilers] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 27 Nov 2011 18:57:00 EST. The ongoing revolutions in the Middle East may have put the kibosh on the Bahrain Grand Prix this year, but the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was campaigned as planned against the setting Arabian sun.
India is rapidly motorizing, and with it is emerging a burgeoning automotive industry. Where there's cars there's bound to be racing, and just as the world's biggest automakers head to India in droves, so has the world's foremost racing series. India has seen two of its top drivers make it into F1, it's given rise to its own F1 team, it's hosted numerous demonstration events, and this weekend, for the first time, it hosted its first grand prix.

The race was held on what has - despite a stray dog wandering onto the track during Friday's practice sessions - been widely rated as a fantastic new circuit on the outskirts of New Delhi. But while the hype is all well and good, the part that really counts is how the race went down. Follow the jump to read on.
Continue reading 2011 Indian Grand Prix brings F1 to the subcontinent [spoilers]

2011 Indian Grand Prix brings F1 to the subcontinent [spoilers] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 30 Oct 2011 11:58:00 EST.
The 2011 Formula One World Championship was decided last week in Japan. Or was it? That's where Sebastian Vettel was re-crowned World Champion, propelling himself into the history books as the youngest multiple champ in F1 history. But the series has more than one title in contention each year. So while Vettel won the Drivers' Championship for the second year running, the Constructors' Championship - the title awarded to the winning team, determined by the combined scores of their two drivers - still remained up for grabs.

With four races to go, Red Bull seemed a sure thing to defend its Constructors' Championship. The question came down to a matter of when. In order to seize it in South Korea this weekend, RBR would need to outscore its main rivals at McLaren. In other words, Vettel and his wingman Mark Webber would need to finish the Korean Grand Prix in better average position than Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton. Would that prove too tall an order, or would the defending champs rise to the occasion and shut their rivals out of the championship? Follow the jump to find out.
Continue reading 2011 Korean Grand Prix puts the nail in the coffin [spoilers]

2011 Korean Grand Prix puts the nail in the coffin [spoilers] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 16 Oct 2011 07:01:00 EST.
If one trend could sum up the 2011 Formula One World Championship so far, it would surely be the domination of Sebastian Vettel. The reigning champion has put up an unsurpassed fight to defend his title, claiming pole position eleven out of fourteen races so far this season, and turning them into nine checkered flags. In fact, Vettel has finished on the podium at every grand prix this season but one, having finished fourth at his home race in Germany.

On the home stretch of such a dominant campaign, and with five races still to go before the end of the season, Vettel's lead had grown so insurmountable as to have practically crowned him World Champion already. Almost, anyway, as just one point would be all he'd need to lock up the title in Japan. And if Jenson Button - his closest rival - would not win the race, Vettel wouldn't even need that point. It was pretty much a given, then, that Vettel would claim the title for the second year running. But his rivals wouldn't make it easy for him. Follow the jump to read how it went down.
Continue reading A champion is crowned at the 2011 Japanese Grand Prix [spoilers]

A champion is crowned at the 2011 Japanese Grand Prix [spoilers] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 09 Oct 2011 10:15:00 EST.
What makes Formula 1 stand out above all other forms of motorsport is not the level of competition, and it's not the glitz and glamor. It's the combination of the two. The race action keeps the hardcore fans coming back, while the allure draws in new fans from all walks of life. But the two need to be present in equal measures in order for the formula to work.

Many of those die-hard fans, however, have bemoaned some of the newer tracks on the calendar - circuits that offer great panoramas in exotic locales, but that don't make for particularly close race action. The Marina Bay Street Circuit in Singapore is one such track. While offering plenty in the way of glitz and glamor - particularly under the spotlights and a starry sky - it doesn't quite measure up on the racing action side of the equation.

That was, unfortunately, the case this weekend for the fourth running of the Singapore Grand Prix since its resurrection in 2008. Follow the jump to see what we mean.
Continue reading 2011 Singapore Grand Prix proves bright lights can't replace race action [spoilers]

2011 Singapore Grand Prix proves bright lights can't replace race action [spoilers] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 25 Sep 2011 15:02:00 EST.
Over the last five years, four different drivers have won the Italian Grand Prix. All of them were on the grid for this year's race. In fact, if you go back for ten, the only Monza winner who isn't still in F1 is Juan Pablo Montoya, long since departed for the heavier machines and banked ovals of NASCAR. There's just something about the track just outside of Milan that puts champions in their groove and beckons them back again, year after year.

So, who would win this year? Would Michael Schumacher notch up his sixth win at Monza? Would Rubens Barrichello overcome all the odds to win his fourth? Would Alonso or Vettel rack up their third? Or would we see a new winner altogether? Follow the jump to find out.
Continue reading 2011 Italian Grand Prix put the pedal to the metal [spoilers]

2011 Italian Grand Prix put the pedal to the metal [spoilers] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 11 Sep 2011 11:05:00 EST.
The IZOD IndyCar series has released a computer-generated simulation of a quick lap around the Baltimore Grand Prix circuit. With a long back straight, drivers should be able to ratchet their machines up to a blistering 180 miles per hour before shedding all that speed for an abrupt right. With zero banking and all of the unpleasantries that come along with racing across uneven, bumpy public streets, the course should offer plenty of challenges for teams and their drivers. Turn three offers a 180-degree hairpin and what could be the best place to pass on the track. Drivers who brake late and carry speed through the turn will stand a chance at picking up position.

Turns five, six and seven occur in quick succession as the course darts back and forth through Baltimore, upping the likelihood that at least one racer will collect some concrete on the way into the more technical section from a 120 mph straight. The whole course promises to offer plenty of action once the checkered flag drops this weekend on Sunday, September 4. Hit the jump to check out the video.
Continue reading Take a virtual lap of the Baltimore Grand Prix circuit

Take a virtual lap of the Baltimore Grand Prix circuit originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 01 Sep 2011 12:32:00 EST.
Everyone deserves a little break once in a while. But once that vacation is over, it's time to get back to work.

For the Formula One circus, that break took the better part of a month, giving the drivers and their teams some much-needed R&R from the Hungarian Grand Prix that served as the eleventh of nineteen rounds the last weekend in July until this weekend's Belgian Grand Prix.

Now that they're back in business, it was back to the thrilling season that's unfolded so far and into the home stretch for the last two rounds in Europe before the show hits the road to races overseas. Follow the jump to find out how the race at Belgium's indispensable Spa-Francorchamps circuit went down.
Continue reading 2011 Belgian Grand Prix was a hard day at the Spa [spoilers]

2011 Belgian Grand Prix was a hard day at the Spa [spoilers] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 28 Aug 2011 13:32:00 EST.
Formula 1 racing is coming back to North America, and coming back in a big way. Whereas a few years ago there was no grand prix on this continent at all, now the Canadian Grand Prix is back in Montreal, a new track is being constructed to host the US Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, and negotiations are back under way to hold a race in New Jersey. But if that's not enough, now Mexico is throwing its sombrero in the ring.

The country south of our border held a total of fifteen world championship grands prix in the 1960s, '70s, '80s and '90s, but after '92 it fell by the wayside. But now F1 racing is enjoying a resurgence in popularity in Mexico, mostly revolving around the Sauber team. Sergio Perez is driving for the team, Esteban Gutierrez is their test driver, and Telmex is one of their principal sponsors.

On the back of that popularity, talk is in progress to bring F1 racing back to Mexico. The project reportedly involves entertainment company CIE and billionaire businessman Carlos Slim's son Carlos Slim Domit. CIE owns the Hermanos Rodriguez circuit in Mexico City (named after the brothers who were arguably the most prominent F1 drivers in Mexican history), which could potentially be rejuvenated and brought back up to modern F1 standards, or alternatively a new street circuit is being mooted for Guadalajara.

Either prospect would be several years away, but FIA president Jean Todt is quoted as supporting the venture, which would also join the Brazilian Grand Prix that is currently the only F1 race in Latin America since the demise of the Argentine Grand Prix in 1998.
Mexico in contention to host a Formula 1 grand prix? originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 12 Aug 2011 18:29:00 EST.
Racing fans eager for the return of Formula One racing may recall a proposal last year that would have seen a United States Grand Prix run in New Jersey, just across the Hudson from the Manhattan skyline.

The project went belly-up when local activists against turning Liberty State Park into a racing circuit pressured Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy to put an end to it. In its place - or so it seemed - the return of the U.S. Grand Prix was moved to Austin, Texas, where America's first purpose-built F1 circuit is currently being constructed. One might have assumed that the Austin project won out instead of the New Jersey one, but if the latest report from The Wall Street Journal is anything to go by, it may be too early to count the Garden State out of this particular race just yet.

A new proposal is reportedly being considered to hold an F1 race across the New Jersey townships of Weehawken and West New York, which would still provide the same spectacular backdrop and quick access to and from the city. The project's financial backers are reportedly adamant that the race and all its related expenses be privately funded and require that no tax dollars be diverted towards its orchestration.

If it were to go through, the race would potentially be held in addition to, and not instead of, the race in Texas. It wouldn't be the first time that the United States held two F1 races: parallel grands prix - dubbed East and West - were held at Watkins Glen and Long Beach in the 1970s, while additional races were held as well in Detroit, Dallas and Las Vegas in the 1980s.
New Jersey back in the running for an F1 grand prix originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 03 Aug 2011 17:30:00 EST. Choosing the right tires is an integral element of a good race strategy. Part of that went out the window a number of years ago when Formula One switched to a single tire manufacturer, but the teams are still left to choose between compounds. When it's dry, they go with slicks, alternating between levels of softness and stickiness. When it's wet, they've got a couple of rain tires to choose from. But when the conditions keep changing over the course of a race, it makes for some captivating action. And that's precisely what we had this weekend at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Follow the jump to read how it went down.
Continue reading 2011 Hungarian Grand Prix pits rubber against the rain [spoilers]

2011 Hungarian Grand Prix pits rubber against the rain [spoilers] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 31 Jul 2011 12:02:00 EST.
The 2011 Formula One World Championship, as it's unfolded so far, has been nothing if not smooth sailing for defending champion Sebastian Vettel and his Red Bull Racing team. The young German has started every race so far this year from the front row and gone on to finish on the podium at each, winning six of the nine rounds that unfolded before this weekend.

A lock for a repeat title, then? Not quite, because this weekend's tenth round in Vettel's home country of Germany represents the tipping point. As the midpoint of the nineteen-race season, it can all come together or fall apart for the defending champ from here on in. Follow the jump to see how Vettel and his rivals kicked off the second half of the year.
Continue reading 2011 German Grand Prix shows who's the Ring leader [spoilers]

2011 German Grand Prix shows who's the Ring leader [spoilers] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 24 Jul 2011 14:02:00 EST. Unlike racing series such as IndyCar or Le Mans, the Formula One championship isn't built around any specific race. But even though each grand prix carries the same weight in the standings, some are, symbolically speaking, more important than others. While Monaco is clearly the most exciting, and emblematic of the series as a whole, we'd argue that none are as important to the teams as the British Grand Prix.

Since more teams are based in the UK than anywhere else, the race at Silverstone is considered home turf for about half the grid, not to mention the spiritual home of grand prix racing. So with the British Grand Prix unfolding this weekend, who took top honors? Follow the jump and we'll tell you.
Continue reading 2011 British Grand Prix brings the circus back home to Silverstone [spoilers]

2011 British Grand Prix brings the circus back home to Silverstone [spoilers] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 10 Jul 2011 11:25:00 EST.
