Each year, the Grand National Roadster Show in Pomona, CA is used to award one entrant with the prestigious title of America's Most Beautiful Roadster. At this year's 64th annual show, which took place last weekend, a beautiful burgundy 1927 Track T Roadster owned by John Mumford took home the nine-foot tall trophy as well as a check for $10,000.

Oddly enough, according to Hemmings, the inspiration and desire for this car actually came from a set of rare Ardun heads, which Mumford had collected wanting to make the focal point of a hot rod. After sending the car off to hot-rod builder, Roy Brizio, the heads are just one of many reasons to love this particular roadster. Just to show how competitive the event is, Mumford's '27 Roadster beat out a '33 Ford Roadster that had set a pair of speed records at Bonneville last year and a '32 Ford High Boy Roadster owned by Ford executive vice president Jim Farley.

Early last year, our very own Drew Phillips spotted the Frogman Rocket II doing its best to blend in among the other, less-outrageous creations at the Grand National Roadster Show. At the time, he wondered what it must be like to throw a leg over a trike powered by a supercharged Hemi V8 with over 1,000 horsepower. Now we know. The owner is a kindly soul by the name of Tim Cotterill who decided to have a short film made about the creation.

The action focuses mainly on long, dreamy shots of the Rocket II doing what it does best - generating speed and shoveling bucketfuls of fuel down the engine's throat via two Holley double pumpers. The sound of this thing is beyond intoxicating, and the craftsmanship only helps to return us to our wide-eyed elementary school selves. Crafted by none other than the Blastolene - the same crew that's responsible for Jay Leno's tank car - the Rocket II wears the kind of over-the-top style that makes us downright giddy.

Hit the jump to see the 10-minute feature for yourself. Thanks for the tip, Brian!

"57 Sleeper" built by Dominator Street Rods - Click above for high-res image gallery

As we walked among the custom hot rods and muscle cars of the Grand National Roadster Show this past weekend, there was one particular car that caught our eye. It wasn't so much the exterior of the '57 Chevy that commanded our attention, although the two-tone silver and gray paint job did look quite attractive. It was more the massive dual turbos lurking underneath the hood that causes us to walk over and take a closer look.

What we discovered was one heck of a sleeper. In fact, the car is actually nicknamed "57 Sleeper" by its owner, Tim Kerrigan, founder of Red Line Oil. Built by Dominator Street Rods of Tracy, CA, this '57 Chevy is packing a twin-turbo, 540ci V8 with... drum roll please...1589 horsepower and 1508 pound-feet of torque. The car is built on an Art Morrison chassis and features other goodies like Wilwood brakes, custom 3-inch headers, and Schott Performance wheels. You can see the car in detail in our high-res gallery below.

The 61st annual Grand National Roadster Show took place at the Pomona Fairplex this past weekend, playing host to some of the world's premier hot rods and customs. After our inaugural attendance last year, we made sure to attend again for 2010 and spent an afternoon walking through the various buildings of the world's longest running indoor car show. Among this year's highlights included an exhibit featuring the "History of the Race Car" and a hall dedicated to cars featured on the covers of Rod & Custom and Street Rodder.

The main attraction of the show, however, is when the coveted "America's Most Beautiful Roadster" award is given out to one of the nominated hot rods. This year, a '33 Ford roadster owned by Mike and Dianna Dingman and built by Scott's Hot Rods and Customs in Oxnard, CA took home top honors. You can check out this year's AMBR and the rest of the best (and worst) of the 2010 Grand National Roadster Show in our high-res gallery below.

January 2010 not only kicks off a new year, but also signals the end of the Naughties. The automotive landscape has changed quite a bit since the days of the Y2K scare, but some things remain the same. January still hosts the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) at Cobo Hall in Detroit, the racing season roars to life with the Rolex 24 at Daytona, Barrett-Jackson and the rest of the auction houses will still be propping up their tents in Arizona, and the RetroMobile classic car show and auction will return to the banks of the Seine in Paris.

Classic and collectible car fans will also be treated to the Cavallino Classic, La Jolla Motor Classic, Grand National Roadster Show, and Kruse South Florida Collector Car Auction. Meanwhile, consumers get a chance to kick tires and take notes on the 2010 models at the San Diego Auto Show, Washington Auto Show and Portland International Auto Show domestically, and internationally at the European Motor Show Brussels and Auto Expo India. Besides Daytona, race fans can look forward to events as diverse as the IRC's 78th Rallye Automobile Monte-Carlo and the World Drag Expo swapmeet in Schaumburg, Illinois.

The Grand National Roadster Show celebrated its 60th year this past weekend in Pomona, CA with a gathering of the most beautiful hot rods, customs and motorcycles in the world. The show is the longest running indoor car show anywhere, and over 600 show cars were there competing for various awards, plus another 100 historic vehicles on display including a recreation of the show from 1959 when it was located in Oakland, CA. Visitors could also view the Mach 5 from Speed Racer, the Dukes of Hazzard's General Lee and a restored Munster Coach.

The highlight of the event comes when the title of America's Most Beautiful Roadster is crowned on Sunday afternoon. This year, Harry Willett's 1932 Ford Roadster (above) won the prestigious award, beating out 13 other highly-qualified contenders. The completely hand-built hot rod was also one of the "Great 8" competing for last year's Ridler award at the Detroit Autorama and features a stretched body, custom rail and tubular chassis, and a Viper V10 mated to a 6-speed transmission. Willett joins last year's title holder, Rudy Necoechea's 1932 Ford Roadster, and 2007's Iowa Radster as one of the few AMBR winners.

Gallery: 2009 Grand National Roadster Show

Photos copyright (C)2009 Drew Phillips / Weblogs, Inc.
Grand National Roadster Show celebrates its 60th year originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 27 Jan 2009 19:57:00 EST.
