For those hoping the next iteration of Polyphony Digital's storied 15-year-old Gran Turismo franchise would take full advantage of the Sony Playstation 4, sorry, but we're going to burst your bubble. The next-gen console is slated to debut this holiday season, and while Sony officially announced today that Gran Turismo 6 would be released at the same time, it will be for the seven-year-old Playstation 3 console, not the new PS4. But hey, at least we won't have to have waited five years for this version like we did for the fifth.

GT6 will launch with a roster of 1,200 cars, 33 locations (seven more than GT5) and 71 track layouts. The racing simulator is also said to utilize new game and physics engines, which Sony claims "pushes the limits of the PS3." Today's announcement was made at the well-known Silverstone racing circuit in the UK, which is one of the new tracks in GT6. A demo version of the game with 19 cars (see the full list below and view them in the related gallery) will be released before the holiday season; Sony says it's scheduled for July and will kick off GT Academy 2013.

We'll see more of Gran Turismo 6 at the E3 games show in June, but for now you can watch the trailer below for what has become the Playstation 3's best-selling franchise with 70 million copies sold. This sixth iteration will likely lock down that honor for good.

PS4 game DriveClub - screencap of Mercedes CLA AMGSony held a big event last night where many thought it would debut its next-next-next-gen console system, the Playstation 4. As it turns out, Sony both did and didn't debut the PS4, choosing to keep the console's design a secret for now while premiering the new controller's look, a new Kinect-like camera peripheral and the machine's basic hardware specs.

The other thing that got a lot of attention were games, one of which previewed during the event was DriveClub, a new racing game franchise by Evolution Studios that will launch with the PS4 this holiday season. The studios prior highlights include developing World Rally Championship games for the PS2 and Motorstorm for the PS3. The teaser vid for DriveClub can be watched below, and while it looks darn good, these sorts of vids aren't always accurate representations of what the actual gameplay graphics will look like.

From what we've heard and can tell from the video, DriveClub will look and work just like the other major racing game franchises, namely the Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport series. It's reported, however, that DriveClub will be able to support hundreds of drivers and that it's graphical detail goes down to a car's "microscopic" flecks of paint.

As for the cars that will be included, we see a number of vehicles in the teaser video, including the Hennessey Venom GT, BAC Mono and Pagani Huayra, among others. Mercedes-Benz has even issued a press release announcing that the CLA45 AMG and A45 AMG will be in the game and included the first official shot of the former done up in the game's photorealistic graphics.

So what say you Playstation users? Does DriveClub look like it can give the grand-daddy of next-gen racing games, Gran Turismo, a run for its money on Sony's console?

Two weeks ago, a camouflaged C7 Corvette was spotted as a screen saver during demo mode in Gran Turismo 5. Today, the Corvette C7 Test Prototype can now be downloaded for free from the Playstation Store.

Chevrolet worked with GT5 developer Polyphony Digital to create an authentic version of the test car prototype that is still in the oven as it prepares for a reveal at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show, from the wrinkles in the soft cladding to the "specific driving characteristics that are currently being tuned and refined."

It's the closest you'll get to being a genuine test driver, and you'll hear no complaints from us about gaining that experience in one of the most anticipated sports cars ever. There's a press release below that you can read as you fire up the old PlayStation3.

The camouflaged C7 Corvette that will strip down for the 2013 Detroit Auto Show has been seen on the roads as a coupe and as a convertible, and in a teaser video. Chalking up another appearance in video, the camo'd coupe does a screen saver cameo during demo mode in Gran Turismo 5. Out back it's hung with a "CORVETTE" vanity plate that looks Michigan standard but is actually from the state of Polyphony...

A camouflaged Nissan GT-R was introduced to Gran Turismo in the same way a number of years ago. According to a YouTube commenter, the Corvette dealership in the game has 17 cars for sale but only 16 of them show up. Our guess is that you can take advantage of the 450 horsepower lurking inside this one after 1/13/13. For now you can have another look at it in the videos below.

Part of the blinged-out pomp and circumstance that surrounds SEMA is the presentation of the Gran Turismo Awards, which recognizes best car design and innovations in six categories, as well as an overall Best in Show. This year's winner was David Eckert and his 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 40, which also won the award for Best Hot Rod.

Other winners included the Toyota DragQuoia for Best Truck/SUV, the 2013 Ford Mustang RTR for Best Domestic Car, the Scion Evasive FR-S for Best Asian Import and the 500-horsepower VWVortex Super Beetle won for best European Import.

But it was the Mach 40 that apparently captured the interest of judges, which included Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi. David Eckert's team created a clever combination of Mustang Mach 1 styling and massive power, using the powertrain from the Ford GT. That means this 'Stang was fitted with a mid-mounted supercharged 5.4-liter V8, producing 600 to 850 horsepower, modulated using an "adjustable horsepower dial." Interestingly, the custom project rides on a C6 Corvette suspension.

The notoriety of the Mach 40 will last well after this year's show, as the car is being included in the Gran Turismo franchise, and will be seen by the millions that play the popular driving simulator. You may never get to drive the Mach 40, but now you may know what driving this car feels like in virtual reality, which for the David Eckert's team, must feel pretty darn cool.

Nissan GT Academy season two screencap

Nissan has announced the second season of Nissan GT Academy is set to premiere on SPIKE TV starting later this week. Starting on November 1 at 11:30 pm EST, the show will follow the top 32 Gran Turismo video gamers that qualified as finalists out of the 400,000 registered online players who took a shot at becoming a real-life race car driver. That number dropped to just 16 after a show down in San Diego, and that lucky crew got to take a trip to the Silverstone Racing Complex in England for the final series of tests.

The tests in question included both physical and psychological challenges to prepare the would-be racers for time in the cockpit. Each episode will see one contestant sent home after evaluations from professional drivers Danny Sullivan, Maryeve Dufault and Boris Said. Of course, should you miss the episodes on the air, they'll reappear on YouTube the following Monday. Check out the show's teaser as well as the full press release below.

The Gran Turismo video racing simulator franchise is four years into its tie-up with Nissan that created Gran Turismo: The Academy. One might have thought taking third-in-class at the 24 Hours of Dubai would have been enough, but no, there's more, and it's called Gran Turismo 5: GT Academy Edition.

When it arrives on September 26, the shiny disc inside will contain the packs available for the last two years: Car Packs 1, 2 and 3, Course Packs 1 and 2, the Special Paint Pack and Racing Gear Pack, and the very same Nissan GT-R that Kazunor Yamauch drove in the Nürburgring 24-Hour race this year. Well, not that one, but a digital representation of it.

According to Playstation's EU people, it will cost the equivalent of €29.99, which is about $37 at current conversion rates. You have two months to save up and a video below to keep you in the mood until then.

2012 Maserati GranTurismo MC Trofeo

Spec racing series are emerging as an indispensable way for exotic automakers to show what their vehicles can do without the constraints of road regulations, and for their top customers to race wheel-to-wheel on some of the most famous racing circuits in the world behind the wheel of top machinery. Ferrari has the Challenge series, Lamborghini the Blancpain Super Trofeo, Porsche operates several iterations of the Carrera Cup around the world, and Maserati has the Trofeo World Series.

Now entering its third year, the Trofeo is campaigned by a field of specially prepared versions of the GranTurismo coupe, which has been upgraded with several improvements for the season ahead. Maserati Corse has both optimized the aerodynamic setup and trimmed the car's weight, resulting in an average lap time that proved two and a half seconds faster around the Vallelunga circuit outside Rome over last year's car during winter testing.

Whereas previous series have been held almost exclusively in Europe or in the Middle East, this year's Trofeo World Series adds rounds at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, California, and the Shanghai International Circuit that hosts the Chinese Grand Prix after the returning races at Jarama, Spain (next weekend), Portimao, Portugal (in early June), Imola, Italy (late June), and Paul Ricard, France (in July).

Maserati Corse provides the full motorsport experience to gentlemen racers for €110,000 ($140K) for the full season or €70,000 ($90K) for just the European races, including use of the car. Teams owning and fielding their own cars pay €35,000 ($45K) or €25,000 ($32K), respectively. BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo spy shot - CarPix

In spite of the near-Pavlovian howling that commences anytime the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo is mentioned, and in spite of the 5GT falling so short of its sales target that BMW has been forced to consider bringing back the 5 Series Touring, the ungainly hatch has outsold that wagon during its time on our shores. And that was before it got dressed up with an M Sport package.

It shouldn't be a surprise then that the 3 Series GT is still rushing our way, with a report on BMW Blog (not connected to the company) declaring it will be here in March 2013. BMW is promoting the hatchback 3 as "the alternative to alternatives, a style conscious car with the dynamic prowess to match its looks," which smacks of PR-speak veering dangerously close to Newspeak.

We'll find out soon enough, nevertheless, for the moment, the 3GT is claimed to offer the cargo capacity of the 5 Series sedan but with even more room for everyone's legs. It is predicted to wear a slightly different face than the rest of the 3 Series line and have frameless windows (the rendering on BMW Blog has frames). Power should be from the current 3 Series lineup of turbocharged four- and six-cylinder engines.

Maserati GranTurismo S Limited Edition front three-quarter view

The song that made Will Smith famous - this is when he was The Fresh Prince who rapped and not acted - is called "Parents Just Don't Understand." In it, he takes his mom's Porsche for an unauthorized spin while his parents are on vacation, unintentionally picks up a 12-year-old runaway and then gets busted by the cops for doing 90 mph and not having a driver's license. The point of it all? Kids will do the darndest things.

Need another example? The Sydney Morning Herald reports that a ten-year-old kid in Hong Kong may have been been channeling his own fresh prince when he took his dad's Maserati GranTurismo for an unauthorized, license-less drive. He couldn't even get out of the building's parking lot without hitting another car, but kept on driving out and down the street until someone noticed him and called the police. He was arrested, and is now out on bail.

Due back in court this month, he potentially faces a seven-year prison sentence for theft and driving without a license, although no one expects that to happen. In the classic Will Smith jam, our hero gets a tag-team whipping in the car when his parents retrieve him from jail. The ten-year-old should hope his parents, and the Hong Kong judge, are just as understanding.

Acura NSX Concept

The Acura NSX Concept was only just unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show and here it's already in a Gran Turismo 5 video. The newest take on an ecological supercar features Honda's recently pointy concept-design language, as well as a V6 amidships getting help from three hybrid motors and Acura's SH-AWD.

Maserati GranTurismo S Limited Edition

We like us some matte finish here at Autoblog, but we have to admit that the usual smattering of matte black vinyl wraps leave us a bit in the dark. That's why our eyes pop just a little wider when we see a car that cuts the glare but keeps the palette. That's also why the storied brands of the Fiat group are getting top marks in our books these days.

At the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, the group's top brand Ferrari showed off a concept 599 with regenerative braking and a delicious matte green finish. The following year at the same venue, Alfa Romeo lifted the veil on the tempting 4C Concept in a beautiful shade of matte red. And at the Bologna Motor Show earlier this month, their sister brand Maserati showcased this special GranTurismo in matte blue.

The car in question is a unique GranTurismo S Limited Edition exclusive to the Italian market, limited to only twelve examples to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Italian unification. It also packs carbon spoilers front and rear, as well as carbon side mirrors and door handles, with matte black side skirts and headlamps, and black 20-inch rims with polished aluminum brake calipers. Nissan 370Z Dubai 24 Hours

Nissan is headed to the Dubai 24 Hours with a specially prepared 370Z. While the 410-horsepower Z is an impressive piece of hardware, we're more interested in who's behind the wheel. This year, Nissan will take to the track with a full team of racers who have graduated from the company's GT Academy. The four-man team is made up of individuals who got their start on the virtual tracks of the Gran Turismo video game franchise before beating out the competition for a spot on track.

Lucas Ordonez of Madrid won the 2008 GT Academy, and the young driver has since managed to take second place in the LMP2 class of the 2011 Le Mans series. The 26-year old also took home the honor of being named Rookie Of The Year in the 2011 Le Mans International Cup. Ordonez will be joined by 23-year-old Frenchman Jordon Tressman, who won the 2010 GT Academy and the 2011 Blancpain Endurance Series.

Jann Mardenborough, the 20-year-old racer who won the 2011 GT Academy will also join the team alongside this year's GT Academy USA winner, Bryan Heikotter. Hit the jump for the full press release.

Five years ago, a gent named Art Morrison won the Gran Turismo Award at SEMA for his 3G Corvette. A come-hither restomod, Morrison had tucked a bucket of modern internals - like his own chassis supporting an aluminum V8 with 538 horsepower and a Viper transmission - under the body of a 1960 Corvette. The prize meant that his car would appear in Playstation's GT5, which it did the following year (as seen at right).

Matt Farrah, in his guise as Mr. Smoking Tire, got the 3G Corvette out of the video game and onto the cambered apexes of Nevada's Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch. What happens after that looks and sounds a lot better than anything you'll see in GT5. Follow the jump to check it out.

Maserati GranCabrio Fendi

The collaboration between fashion houses and automakers is a longstanding tradition. Think Nautica edition Mercury Villager, Eddie Bauer edition Ford Explorer, or most recently, the Gucci edition Fiat 500. Now its big brother Maserati is getting in on the action with the Fendi edition GranCabrio - the droptop known as the GranTurismo Convertible on this side of the Atlantic.

Set to be unveiled next month at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the GranCabrio Fendi is distinguished by such unique touches as a special dark gray paint with flecks of gold, special leather and wood trim in the cabin, yellow highlights inside and out, a fitted leather luggage set (similar to the set previously offered by rival clothier Salvatore Ferragamo) and the requisite special badges.

The individually-numbered special edition, well-appointed as it looks, is sure to be popular with the affluent boulevard cruiser set in locales ranging from Rodeo Drive to Monte Carlo. 2011 BMW 5 Series Touring

The 5 Series Gran Turismo hasn't met its lofty sales expectations in the United States, so BMW is considering bringing the 5 Series Touring back to our shores.

Although nothing is set in stone, Autoblog has learned that the possibility of the wagon making a reappearance on U.S. soil is back on the table. While sales of the 5 Series GT haven't been particularly robust, the model has managed to outsell the previous 5 Series Touring since its arrival last year - this, despite its lukewarm reception and controversial appearance.

We've also been informed that the twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V12 currently fitted to the 760Li won't shuffle off this mortal coil anytime soon. Instead, BMW is considering fitting the massive mill with its ActiveHybrid system to boost fuel economy and performance. We could see this electrically augmented 12-cylinder unit within the next three years in both the 7 Series flagship and future Rolls-Royce vehicles.

Maserati GranTurismo S Superior Black Edition by Anderson Germany

It's hard to make a car as sinister-looking as the Maserati GranTurismo even more so. Maserati itself managed to do that with the GranTurismo MC Stradale, and now Anderson Germany has taken a crack at it with this new blacked-out GranTurismo S.

The aptly named Superior Black Edition swaps elements like the stock hood and mirrors in favor of carbon-fiber replacements, has an interior dressed in ample helpings of carbon and Alcantara, and is wrapped in matte black vinyl that contrasts the glossy 21-inch wheels. A lowered suspension contributeBacking up the evil looks is a massaged version of the GranTurismo's Ferrari-sourced 4.7-liter V8, which now belts out 492 horsepower.

Kazunori YamauchiKazunori Yamauchi, the creator of the Gran Turismo franchise, has jumped back into real-world racing. The mastermind behind one of the most popular racing video game series on the planet recently campaigned a Nissan GT-R in the four-hour Nürburgring VLR alongside Tobias and Michael Shulze and the founder of Opera Performance, Yasuyoshi Yamamoto. The team's car is reportedly the spitting image of the GT500 Stealth GT-R from Gran Turismo 5, and word has it that the four-man team is out to compete in this year's Nurburgring 24 Hours.

Last year, Yamauchi raced a specially-prepared Lexus IS-F in a number of VLN races. His efforts netted his team a class victory in a four-hour race, and GTPlanet reports that the gaming mastermind took home fourth in his class at the 2010 Nuburgring 24 Hours. Look for Yamauchi and his crew in the #71 car when the green flag drops.

That is, so long as the team isn't delayed from arriving until Christmas 2015...

Major automakers take note: if you want to see how far your can go with a single platform, look towards small exotic automakers like Maserati or Aston Martin.

Both these rival marques build their entire lineup on a single platform each (with occasional exceptions like the MC12 or One-77, respectively). In Maserati's case, the latest addition is the GranTurismo MC Stradale (known just as the GranTurismo MC on this side of the Atlantic). And to tie the family together, the Modenese automaker has released this video that showcases the MC against a backdrop that also includes the standard GranTurismo coupe, the GranCabrio (known here as the GranTurismo Convertible) and the Quattroporte flagship.

The 2011 Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale is the regular GranTurismo's crude, hairy-chested brother. It's loud, muscle-bound and doesn't make any apologies. With a 450-horsepower version of Maserati's 4.7 liter V8 under the hood, its got the brawn to back up its big talk.

Despite its unruly demeanor and aerodynamic tweaks to the body, the fastest Maserati also manages to be as drop-dead gorgeous as its tamer stablemate. Now, there's video of Maserati's wild child tearing up the race track. The car looks poised and right at home, and sounds like Lucifer's personal symphony at full blast.
