A band of thieves is being blamed for a brazen nighttime theft of 33 historic trophies from the Goodwood estate, where the Festival of Speed and Revival are held. According to the Telegraph, at least four burglars drove up to the Earl Of March's 12,000-acre estate on Monday night in a Range Rover, whereupon they broke a window at the Kennels Clubhouse (above, upper left) and smashed four cabinets to gain access to the trophy collection.

The trophies are valued at £15,000 - over $22,700 US - but are essentially priceless because they cannot be duplicated and some have significant historic and sentimental value. One of the stolen pieces includes the Mobil Oil Trophy, awarded in 1931 to the Earl's grandfather for a race at Brooklands.

An estate spokesperson fears the trophies may be sold for scrap, as they figure to be very difficult to sell. A reward has been set up for the return of the trophies and local police are asking for help from anyone who may know anything about the burglary.
Over $20,000 in 'irreplaceable' trophies stolen from Goodwood originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 06 Apr 2013 13:01:00 EST.

I'd have been no more flummoxed if Noah's Ark had floated past on a river of rainbows skippered by a pair of unicorns.

I had heard, off in the distance, a rumbling I couldn't quite place. I'd know the basstone of overhead-valve V8 mills from America if I heard them in my sleep, and a quick pinch to the fleshy part of my forearm proved that I was, for better or for worse, wide awake. No, not from America.

The sound continued, louder and more insistent as more engines were fired; clearly not the shriek that accompanies the spinning guts of an Italian 12-cylinder engine, either. And then the unmistakable whine of a supercharger. My walk turned into a quick jog, and then an all-out sprint.

I went out in search of the mysteriously glorious sound of internal combustion. What I stumbled upon is, quite literally, the stuff of legends. It's true: One-horned horses have managed to master the art of ark wrangling. How else could I be seeing a brace of open-wheel Silver Arrows, shivering with every percussion of compression, all hailing from 1934 to 1939 and ready to race? I must be at the Goodwood Revival.
Continue reading Checking the Goodwood Revival off my bucket list

Checking the Goodwood Revival off my bucket list originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 16 Nov 2012 14:58:00 EST.
Any motoring enthusiast worth his salt knows and reveres the Goodwood Revival. While the Festival of Speed is exactly what the name states, the Goodwood Revival is an experience unlike any other. More than just vintage racing, nearly everyone in attendance dresses in period-correct clothing, and you are immersed in a different era. Now, if only we could have something like that here in the States.

It appears that may be in the works, as Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance founder Bill Warner is in talks with Goodwood's Lord March to bring an event like the revival to the United States. According to the report from Auto Minded, the aim is to have an event take place in the fall, after the conclusion of Europe's vintage events.

The report suggests that the Florida town of Fernandina Beach, to which Warner has strong ties, is an ideal location. The town has a municipal airport that can provide facilities for vintage aircraft as well as the layout for a race course. (The FAA would need to approve the location.) Additionally, Fernandina Beach is close to luxury resorts that befit the concours/vintage-racing set.

While there are several prominent Concours events, such as Pebble Beach. Amelia Island and Greenwich, as well as racing events in Lime Rock and Monterey, the US does not have a revival-type event that throws you into the past the way that Goodwood does. Let's hope this plan comes to fruition.

UPDATE: The PR firm representing the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance contacted us to inform us that the group is not involved in the above plans. Please scroll down to read a statement from Amelia Island Concours chairman Bill Warner.
Continue reading Goodwood Revival-style event may come to the US [UPDATE]

Goodwood Revival-style event may come to the US [UPDATE] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 21 Oct 2012 12:33:00 EST.
The Earl of March, the man responsible for the Goodwood Revival, said he's been trying to get all of the Silver Arrows race cars - those of Auto Union, now Audi Tradition, and Mercedes-Benz - to the event for 20 years. This year, the stars aligned. 2012 marked the 75th anniversary of the Silver Arrows arriving in the UK, and there have never been as many of the instantly recognizable winners in one place at the same time. Ten of them, to be specific.

They weren't just there to sit in "the box," either, with drivers like Jackie Stewart, Jochen Mass and Karl Wendlinger throwing them around the Goodwood Circuit. For all of their Wagnerian pre-war thunder,at least one of them was apparently kinder than it sounded: Mass compared the handling of the Mercedes W25, with its over 400-horsepower 4.3-liter inline eight-cylinder, to a Volkswagen Beetle.
Cobras, Tigers and... Ferrari's? Oh my! If you happened to miss our post on the '60s touring cars that took to the track at the 2011 Goodwood Revival, you may not realize just how amazing vintage racing can be. And it gets even more interesting as the value and historic significance of the cars increases.

For proof, we suggest you check out the two videos after the break to see vintage prototypes like the Ford GT40, various Lolas and a smattering of McLarens take to the track. Then, to top it all off, we have the '60s sports car class, which includes such iconic masterpieces as the Shelby Cobra (in both hardtop and Daytona Coupe guises), Ferrari models that include the famous GTO and the so-called Breadvan (a short-wheelbase 250 GT), plus a slew of machinery from Maserati and Aston Martin.

It's always a thrill to watch vintage racing, and that's doubly so when the cars are as varied as they are at the Goodwood Revival's 1960s Touring Cars class. In the video after the break, you'll see such classic machinery as the V8-powered Ford Galaxie, 300-horsepower Jaguar Mk II, Lotus Cortina, Mini Cooper (the original, naturally), Alfa Romeo GT and BMW 1600.

How can a puny 1.6-liter Mini Cooper possibly compete with cars boasting twice as much power? That'd be by maintaining as much speed through the corners as possible, maximizing its weight advantage when braking and, of course, it never hurts to see some stellar driving talent behind the wheel.

We suggest you click past the break to get in on the vintage racing goodness. It's seven minutes of your life well spent.
Continue reading Goodwood Revival historic race showcases classic touring cars

Goodwood Revival historic race showcases classic touring cars originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 06 Oct 2011 18:59:00 EST.
Those who love both dogs and sports cars often find that their two passions can't exist together in perfect harmony. A man named Geoffrey Stevens thought differently, and in the 1970s, he decided to build a car that would allow him to prove his point. We're not going to speculate here that drugs were involved in this decision, but it was the '70s after all...

The resulting car is called, somewhat appropriately, the Foxbat, and it's the unholy union of a 1959 Jaguar XK150 and a Morris Minor Traveller. Mr. Stevens was able to enjoy the driving entertainment provided by his XK150, while also taking in the company of his beloved Labradors.

The Foxbat is now for sale through Bonhams, and it will be auctioned off at the Goodwood Revival event on September 16th. Auction officials have estimated that it will fetch between $50,000 and $60,000.
Classic Jaguar XK150 gets Minor adjustments, goes to the dogs originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 07 Sep 2011 15:31:00 EST.
The Earl of March is our hero. There, we've said it. The guy took some of his substantial inheritance and decided to do something charitable for the public with it. He had the old Goodwood Motor Circuit cleaned up after decades of neglect and resurrected the great racing that had taken place at the circuit back in the Forties, Fifties, and early Sixties. Literally. The entrants have to have been eligible to race when the circuit was open originally, so only cars made from 1948-1966 make the grade.

The Goodwood Revival, as the event is now known, revives the glory days of racing, when gentleman racers could drive their Sports Cars and GTs to the track, run them for all they were worth, then pack 'em up and drive them back home. Goodwood also happened to host Formula 1 races and Tourist Trophy runs back in the day, so the entry list is pretty amazing.

Besides the incredible cars and A-List automotive celebs that show up for the event, the Revival is famous for one other thing: Participants and spectators are encouraged to dress in period clothing. So it's basically the world's biggest costume party held at a racetrack. How cool is that? Follow the jump to hear more about the 2009 running of the Revival, and make sure you check out the incredible gallery of photos by contributor Tim Brown. We bet you'll find a few new wallpapers in the batch.

Gallery: 2009 Goodwood Revival

Photos copyright (C)2009 Tim Brown / Weblogs, Inc.

Continue reading 2009 Goodwood Revival: Minis, Moss and More

2009 Goodwood Revival: Minis, Moss and More originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 23 Sep 2009 16:29:00 EST. Comedy? All things British? Well mark your calendars for September 18-20, as comedian Rowan Atkinson will be appearing in character as the bungling Mr. Bean during the UK's Goodwood Revival. Not only that, but to celebrate 50 years of Mini, Mr. Bean will be driving his pea-green and black-hooded Issigonis-penned Mini around the Goodwood Motor Circuit each day of the festival - sitting on the roof! Turns out it's a well known Mr. Bean gag. Ahem.

Atkinson, a well known car buff (and McLaren F1 owner), will also be bringing his Jaguar Mk IV to help celebrate 80 years of Sir Stirling Moss. One more thing, Atkinson will field a 1965 Austin Mini Cooper S during an all-Mini St Mary's Trophy saloon car race. We wish him the best of luck with that last one, despite our blood-boiling jealousy. The crop circles were found in the grass at the West Sussex circuit during final preparations for the Revival, which runs today through Sunday. The Goodwood Revival features vehicles from the 50s and 60s in a retro race, along with period dress and a variety of festivities.

Several aircraft from many different decades have flown safely above the Goodwood course in past years, but in 2003 there was a reported UFO siting at the race and the photographs of the sighting were the talk of the Internets after the alleged incident. We're pretty skeptical about the crop circles, so we're guessing the marketing types over at Goodwood wanted to get one more media push in advance of the 10th anniversary of a very cool weekend event. We would like to see the event in person, but short of little green men beaming us over there, we'll have to sit this one out.

[Source: World Car Fans]
Crop circles appear at Goodwood before race originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 19 Sep 2008 17:31:00 EST.
Few automobiles on the road offer the kind of stately ride that a Rolls-Royce does, but this one-of-a-kind creation takes things to another level. At the upcoming Goodwood Revival later this month, Bonhams will offer a unique carousel built by Rolls-Royce in the 1930s.

Believed to have been crafted for a company field day during the Depression, the Rolls-Royce merry-go-round features 24 horses with leather saddles (none of them, to our disappointment, shaped like a giant Spirit of Ecstasy) and powered by a 50-horsepower engine from the Phantom of the day. The unique creation looks poised to deliver an open-air ride to rival even the Drophead Coupe, and is expected to fetch upwards of $60,000 when the gavel drops.

Those of you with extra frequent flyer miles or a very large couch collecting change can book your tickets now so you'll arrive in time for the festivities beginning on July 11th and running through the 13th. Although a theme hasn't been announced yet, feel free to create your own suggestions box in the comments below.

The Goodwood Revival, a trip back in time for both the vehicles and participants alike, will be held on September 19, 20 and 21, and marks the tenth anniversary of the retro-themed shindig. Expect the Earl to pull out all the stops.

Per usual, ticket sales are sold strictly in advance, so start snatching them up when they go on sale the 1st of November.

[Source: Goodwood Motor Sport]
Goodwood Festival of Speed: Dates for '08 originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 20 Oct 2007 18:20:00 EST. The Goodwood estate he oversees is home to the annual Festival of Speed, the retro-themed Goodwood Revival, and the Rolls-Royce assembly plant. The dashing noble's blood is infused with motor oil, it seems, and his enthusiasm is something he shares with the public through the events he organizes and hosts.

The Goodwood Revival is an annual vintage racing event held at the Goodwood Motor Circuit, and attention to period-correct detail is part of the fun. Many participants and fans dress in period-correct attire, turning the event into a glorious multi-day time warp. Now, back in the day, everybody smoked. It was glamorous and accepted. As we're all aware, modern times have brought with them a slew of nannyish rules (and even more nannyish people behind them) that have turned smokers into pariahs. Lord March (a non-smoker, FYI) notes that in many old racing photographs and films, the subjects are often captured enjoying a smoke. As such, he has declared this year's Revival to be a "Free Smoke Zone" in all outdoor venues, and the use of tobacco is encouraged to further contribute to the period authenticity of the event. Light up without angst, racing fans. Lord March is welcoming you with open arms.

[Source: Goodwood Motor Circuit]

Gallery: Goodwood Revival

Continue reading Light 'em up: Lord March set to throw a smokin' 2007 Goodwood Revival

Light 'em up: Lord March set to throw a smokin' 2007 Goodwood Revival originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 10 Aug 2007 15:04:00 EST.
