Ken Block is on a quest to destroy tires on every patch of land on this planet. His latest conquest is the driveway belonging to one Charles Henry Gordon-Lennox, Earl of March and Kinrara. He also goes by Lord March, and his driveway happens to play host to the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Block was in attendance with both his Gymkhana-prepped Ford Fiesta and Fiesta WRC ultra-hot hatch. Many a donut was turned, lots of smoke was generated and it appears that serious sideways fun was had by both Block and the few lucky folks who got to ride shotgun on Block's passes... including Lord March's own son.

For the second year in a row, Lord March has handed down a hooning award to Ken. Check out the Goodwood action, the trophy and the unique way Ken decides to celebrate the victory by watching the clip posted after the jump.
Continue reading Ken Block brings home Goodwood hooning title... again

Ken Block brings home Goodwood hooning title... again originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 20 Jul 2011 19:57:00 EST.
Despite his predilection for British cars, Sir Stirling Moss has a name and career that can be attached to a few special race cars from other parts of the world. Among the most notable are his ties with Germany's Mercedes-Benz and Porsche. Moss was recently seen at the 2011 Goodwood Festival of Speed and he arrived with one of his prized Porsches ready to run up the hill.

This particular Porsche is the 718 RS 61, which Moss ran in the Targa Florio. He may have won in the Mercedes-Benz 300SLR, but Moss loved driving the Porsche. He states that it's "so driver-friendly" that he eventually Moss purchased the car for his own private collection.

Before running up the hill, Sir Stirling Moss stops to chat for an interview, which you can watch after the jump. This is a simple clip, yet it's done perfectly and the ending shows Moss waving to fans before his Porsche crosses the finish line.
Continue reading Sir Stirling Moss talks about his Porsche history before running up the hill at Goodwood

Sir Stirling Moss talks about his Porsche history before running up the hill at Goodwood originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 18 Jul 2011 19:31:00 EST.
Mugen is not a name that one would be shocked to hear announced over the Goodwood Festival of Speed PA system. The Honda CR-Z, however, is a car that festival goers would be surprised to see idling ahead of its run up the hill. Upon closer inspection, though, you would see a bunch of aero bits, hear a racy exhaust thump and see the Mugen badge on the rear end. The Mugen CR-Z that we showed off earlier was not the only tuned hybrid two-seater at Goodwood. In fact, it wasn't the only CR-Z that Mugen brought along. Like a lonely Skywalker... there is another.

The Honda CR-Z Mugen RR Concept also showed its aggressive face at the Festival of Speed. The RR Concept goes a step further into the race-ready arena than the Mugen CR-Z. The exterior aero bits are more focused for track use, but there is no word on the performance figures created by what's under the hood. Mugen says this vehicle is being used as a study to help define future performance models. Take a look at it from both angles in our gallery below.
Continue reading Mugen shows Honda CR-Z RR Concept at Goodwood

Mugen shows Honda CR-Z RR Concept at Goodwood originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 06 Jul 2011 13:01:00 EST.
Unlike most vehicles in which speeds are limited in reverse, the Nissan Leaf, if slightly modified, can be driven backwards at speeds of up to 90 miles per hour. That's why the Leaf, piloted by professional stunt driver Terry Grant, was the vehicle chosen to attempt a record-setting backwards hillclimb at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this past weekend.

Unfortunately, Goodwood officials halted Nissan's attempt, saying that lack of testing prior to the event made it too risky. A Nissan spokesman commented on the situation:

We still want to break records with the Leaf. The fact it can travel at speeds up to 90 mph backwards is too good an opportunity not to exploit. The car does have to be modified for this to be possible, though, so there are safety issues we need to overcome first.

The record-setting attempt - right up the famed Goodwood Hill - was to take place this past weekend. Strangely, Goodwood officials didn't see two-wheeling a Nissan Juke up the hill as excessively dangerous and allowed driver Terry Grant to do just that.

Few events bring out the big guns every year like the Goodwood Festival of Speed. In the absence of a prominent British Motor Show, the car-fest hosted by the Earl of March is the most significant automotive spectacle the UK has to offer this side of seventeen seasons of Top Gear. But it's so much more than that.

Goodwood is a celebration of all things automotive. And more than watching cars sitting still on a convention center show floor or even the lawns of a concours, the Festival of Speed goads automakers, racing teams and classic car collectors into running their finest pieces of machinery up The Hill in a visceral orgy of velocity.

This year's event just took place over the long weekend, and was packed with everything you'd hope to see: the crème de la crème of production road cars, grand prix racers, classics, endurance race cars, prototypes, rally machines and touring cars. But don't take our word for it: we've assembled a gallery of over 200 images from this year's event specifically so you wouldn't have to. Check 'em out, but be warned: there will be drool.
2011 Goodwood Festival of Speed in 235 pictures originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 05 Jul 2011 20:01:00 EST.
The Goodwood Festival of Speed is filled with a variety of machines all battling towards a singular goal. Every driver wants to be the cross the finish line in the least amount of time, and this year the winning car was a bit of a surprise. A bright orange Toyota Celica, piloted by rally champion Jonny Milner, blazed up the 1.16-mile Goodwood hillclimb course in 48.07 seconds. That time bested all of the supercars, and even the Formula 1 racers that participated.

How does a Toyota Celica make the run that quickly? By pumping out over 800 horsepower to all four wheels in a car that only weighs 2,318 pounds. The Celica's stock engine was replaced with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder unit plucked from a WRC Toyota Corolla. That mill was then paired with both a Rotrex supercharger and Garrett turbocharger, and Iif that wasn't enough, a nitrous oxide system was thrown in for good measure.

Video of the winning run hasn't made its way to the Internet just yet, but we do have footage of the car throwing down a 48.99-second run. Click past the jump to watch the clip, and then fast forward to 1:48 for Jonny Milner's run.
Continue reading This 800-hp Toyota Celica beat up Formula 1 cars at Goodwood [w/video]

This 800-hp Toyota Celica beat up Formula 1 cars at Goodwood [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 05 Jul 2011 13:58:00 EST.
Every year, the Goodwood Festival of Speed selects one automaker as its featured marque and commissions a unique sculpture in its honor. With the iconic Jaguar E-Type celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, Goodwood has picked Jaguar for the seat of prestige at this year's event, and this is the installation that will do the job.

Inspired by the E-Type's shape, rather than crafted from it as other sculptures have been in years past, this installation is made from half a kilometer of steel tubing made for gas pipelines. The material was supplied by Jaguar's sister company, Tata Steel, with each tube measuring nearly four feet in diameter with walls half an inch thick.

Like the pieces that preceded it, it was crafted by Goodwood's sculptor-in-residence Gerry Judah. All in all the piece stands over 90 feet tall and weighs 150 metric tons, took 10 days for a team of bridge-builders to install and will be displayed along with Jaguar's current range as well as the C-X75 turbine-hybrid concept car at the event.
The Goodwood Festival of Speed kicks off this weekend, and it promises to be a veritable smorgasbord of high-performance machinery. Not the least of them will be the new MP4-12C GT3, which McLaren has been fine-tuning since its debut barely two months ago.

Following extensive ongoing development work, McLaren has given the 12C GT3 a new radiator and gearbox cooler, as well as a retuned aerodynamics package with a new front splitter, rear wing and diffuser, louvered fenders and door blade, all of which promise to help the first GT racer produced by McLaren since the F1 GTR running fast and running long ahead of the pack.

To support the field of 20 cars that will be fielded by privateers starting next season, the Woking-based outfit has also launched the new McLaren GT division in conjunction with the CRS Racing Team.

The updated GT3 will run in its latest form up the hill at the Goodwood estate this weekend, and to mark the occasion, McLaren has released a fresh batch of high-resolution images which we've added to the launch photos. Check 'em out along with the press release after the jump.
Continue reading McLaren running revised MP4-12C GT3 up the hill at Goodwood

McLaren running revised MP4-12C GT3 up the hill at Goodwood originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 01 Jul 2011 10:58:00 EST.
Auto shows are generally defined by their location: Detroit, Los Angeles, Geneva, Frankfurt, Tokyo.... Moving a show from one city to another, then, wouldn't fly. But Goodwood is different.

The Festival of Speed is called the Moving Motor Show because it displays cars in motion, but the whole show could be moving itself if the latest reports come to fruition. Word has it that Lord Charles Gordon-Lennox, the Earl of March who organizes the Festival of Speed and the Goodwood Revival is in discussions with organizers in China about replicating the legendary British event in the People's Republic.

Lord March reportedly visited China recently, and will be accepting a delegation of government representatives and automakers from the populous country at the Festival later this month.
Goodwood heading to China? originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 21 Jun 2011 18:01:00 EST.
Soon, Le Mans won't be the only heritage-rich race track with a ferris wheel, and the Mugen CR-Z won't be the only thing Honda will have on display at this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed. See where this is heading?

For the upcoming British motoring festival, the Japanese automaker is building a giant ferris wheel called the Honda Eye. Measuring 40 meters (131 feet) in height, it's hardly the largest in the world - in fact it's only a third the size of the London Eye, or a quarter the size of the Singapore Flyer, currently the world's largest at 165 meters (541 feet).
Different strokes for different folks. While Volkswagen chose to label its coupe-like Golf derivative as the Scirocco, rival automakers are keeping theirs in the family. Take, for example, the Renault Megane coupe, and this - the new Vauxhall Astra GTC.

Compared to the already-sleek five-door Astra, the GTC retains only the door handles and antenna. All the body panels are fresh, riding on a wheelbase that's actually longer than the existing five-door's, and it's slower and wider, too. Overall, it's a pretty direct production of the GTC concept unveiled at the Paris Motor Show last fall, and of the renderings released more recently.

British buyers - and presumably European ones at Opel dealerships as well - will be able to choose from from four engine options: a 1.4 with 118 or 138 horsepower, a 1.6 with 178 hp or a 2.0-liter diesel with 163 hp. The sophisticated suspension from the higher-end Insignia VXR coupled with adaptive damping promise to keep handling tight.

The Astra GTC will headline Vauxhall's lineup at the Goodwood Festival of Speed next month for its public debut (it was originally promised for this fall's Frankfurt Motor Show, but is showing up early), but you can check it out now in the high-res image gallery and the press release after the jump.
Continue reading Vauxhall unveils new Astra GTC ahead of Goodwood debut

Vauxhall unveils new Astra GTC ahead of Goodwood debut originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 07 Jun 2011 09:30:00 EST.
McLaren is clearly excited to test the racing version of its MP4-12C supercar. Called the MP4-12C GT3, this track-focused racer is equipped to do battle in the 2011 and 2012 GT3 championship series, and McLaren has just released a slew of videos that show off the car from all angles. This thing is perfectly equipped to make beautiful noises and hug the road like a tween meeting Justin Bieber.

One example of the GT3 will make its debut this year, however, McLaren reports that 20 cars are being prepared for the 2012 season. McLaren is also planning to bring the MP4-12C GT3 to the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
Call it anticipation or call it wishful thinking, but reports of a hotter version of the Honda CR-Z have been circulating pretty much ever since the hybrid hatchback hit the market. The CR-Z may be sportier than most hybrids, but when the faithful were expecting a spiritual successor to the iconic CRX with an added jolt of electricity, many were left disappointed.

Along those lines, we have good news, and we have bad news. The good news is that some new details on the hotly anticipated Mugen version of the CR-Z have dropped. The bad news is that it's still strictly a one-off show car, at least for the time being.

The concept car will be revealed in July at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. And when it is, it won't be turbocharged as earlier speculated, but it will be supercharged. With the added benefit of forced induction, the output from the 1.5-liter i-VTEC four that forms the internal combustion part of Honda's Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system will be increased by 50 percent, and when coupled with the electric component will serve up 200 metric horsepower (197 on our scale) and 181 pound-feet of torque.

To go with the added power, the pseudo-works Honda tuner is also fitting adjustable dampers, a wider track, upgraded brakes and rolling stock, an enhanced aero kit and a weight-reduction regimen. Although Mugen insists it holds no plans for producing its breathed-on hybrid, there's no telling what sufficient demand might yield. Follow the jump for the press release and check out the two engine shots released to join the renderings released previously in the gallery below.

1965 Aston Martin DB5 Vantage Convertible - Click above for high-res image gallery

Britain has produced more than its fair share of memorable classics, but arguably few as seductive as the classic Aston Martins of the 1960s. Introduced in 1963, the DB5 benefited from several generations of DB4 development, largely retaining the Touring bodywork but replacing the old 3.6-liter engine with a new 4.0-liter unit and several other advancements.

Over two years of production, over a thousand DB5s were built, the vast majority of coupes outselling the 12 Radford coachbuilt shooting brakes and the 23 convertibles. Of those few roadsters, only nine were outfitted with the more powerful Vantage engine, and one of them has just sold for a record £551,500 ($833k) at the Bonhams auction at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The example in question, with original "VDB 5" license plates, had three previous owners who saw it through two comprehensive restorations (one at the Aston Martin Works Service in 1992 and another at Aston Service Hamburg in 2004), and was displayed last year at Villa d'Este.

Along with the DB5 Vantage Convertible (the Volante name only coming into use on the subsequent DB6), Bonhams also auctioned off the 1937 Bentley featured in the Bond film "Never Say Never Again" for £221,500 ($335k), a rare Lister-Jaguar for £232,500 ($351k) and several more, totaling £3,707,687 ($5.6m) in sales. Details in the press release after the jump, with photos of the beautiful Aston in the gallery below.

Alpina has finally graced the world with a handful of images and all of the gritty details about the all-new 2011 B5 Bi-Turbo after its debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The company has managed to bless the BMW 5 Series with a mythic 507 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. How, you ask? The B5 makes use of the same twin-turbo, all aluminum V8 found in the car's big brother, the B7. That means that there's a full 4.4-liters of displacement sucking down 1 bar of pressure for the two turbos under the hood. Sounds like a party.

The eight-pot is bolted to an eight-speed automatic transmission that Alpina co-developed with the gear-swapping gurus at ZF. If the mood strikes you, the driver can click through the gears via buttons mounted on the back side of the steering wheel, though given the massive amount of work Alpina put into the transmission, odds are you're better off letting the car do the work for you.

There's also a completely reworked suspension on board that includes slightly shorter springs and unique control arms that help eek a little more camber out of the front wheels. Combined with the electronically adjustable suspension, the company claims to provide an altogether sharper driving experience. Speaking of wheels, Alpina has equipped the B5 Bi-Turbo with a set of the company's epic 20-inch rollers. Check out the gallery of high-res images below and then click past the jump for the granddaddy of a press blast.

We've been talking about and looking at the McLaren MP4-12C for so long that it's hard to believe the general population is only seeing it this week, but that's indeed the case.

Ron Dennis' newest creation has finally showed its face, engine and prowess to the admiring eyes at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Not only that, it was driven up the hill by McLaren F1's World Championship-leading drivers, Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button. The runs weren't timed, so everyone stays friends on this one, but there's still plenty of on-road action after the jump.

Celebrating 100 Years of Alfa Romeo - Click above for high-res image gallery

2010 marks the 100th anniversary of Alfa Romeo, and the Italian car company will be the most celebrated marque at nearly every concours and motorsports events this year. The Goodwood Festival of Speed, however, will likely top them all, at least in terms of artistic expression. Alfa Romeo was the theme of the perennial sculpture outside of the Goodwood house, with a 1925 Alfa Romeo P2 and an 8C Competizione mated to 12 tons of red steel standing more than 60 feet high.

There were plenty of Alfas on the ground as well, with quite a few examples competing in the hill climb, including a beautiful 1968 Tip 33/2 Le Mans that won its class at the 24 hour race and a stunning 1991 SE 048 SP Group C prototype. Perhaps our favorite Alfas, though, were the wacky concept cars at the concours event sponsored by Cartier, like the 1968 Carabo Concept, the 1969 Iguana Concept and the 1976 Navajo Concept. Some of the more famous classic Alfas were in attendance as well including a gorgeous 1937 8C 2900B Touring Berlinetta and perhaps on of the most cars of the 1960s, a 1967 Tipo 33 Stradale. You can view all of the photos of Alfa Romeo at the 2010 Goodwood Festival of Speed in the high-res gallery below.

There are plenty of reasons to get excited about the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The annual shindig is a mecca for metal from all over the world - old and new. Motorsports events from across the go-fast spectrum make it onto the schedule and there's even plenty of auto-themed art to keep the masses entertained when they aren't huffing tire smoke. In a word, the event is bliss for anyone with even a passing interest in the automobile.

But the grand daddy of it all has to be the Hill Climb. At 1.16 miles, the course features nine turns, a looming stone wall and enough hay to feed all the cows in Wisconsin for a week. Last year brought out a rash of new high-dollar supercars, including the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG and the Lexus LFA, and as a result, there were plenty of manufacturers on hand to show off their newest hardware. While we were lurking the grounds and looking at all the shiny conveyances, drivers were blasting across the grounds and recording their exploits. We've rounded up 10 of the best videos from the hill and arranged them in no particular order. Sure, some of them are more entertaining than others, but all of them are better than what you're doing at work, right? Hit the jump to get started.
Continue reading Video: Goodwood 2010 - Taking the hill

Video: Goodwood 2010 - Taking the hill originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 06 Jul 2010 19:58:00 EST.
Le Mans-winning McLaren F1 GTR - Click above for high-res image gallery

In the book Driving Ambition about the story of the McLaren F1, chapter 19 begins with the following:

It would have been easy for McLaren Cars to bask in the simple afterglow of its achievement, and initially a relatively somber programme of production and detail refinement to perfect the model was all that was envisaged. But not high performance car manufacturer can legitimately expect to build a world-beater, without one or two prominent and enthusiastic customers becoming keen to prove its products' capabilities 'in anger'. Although there had never - ever - been any expressed intention by the McLaren team at Genesis to produce anything other than a purebred road car, through the summer of 1994 - as we have seen - enthusiastic sporting-minded customers began to persuade the F1's manufacturers to change their minds. Despite many qualms, they did just that.

And that, friends, is why the McLaren F1 GTR is so impressive. The F1 road car wasn't built just to homologate for racing. The motorsports program was an afterthought, one that won the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans outright on McLaren's first attempt as well as finishing third, fourth and fifth. You're looking at the winning car, driven by J.J. Lehto, Yannick Dalmas and Masanori Sekiya, which was displayed by McLaren at this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed. Enjoy the gallery below.

While it would be easy to sit and watch the cars run up the Lord's driveway all day, there's plenty more to do at Goodwood. The paddock is perhaps one of the best places to get a glimpse of the premier-level kit on display, as it allows a close up look all of the cars. Like many of the vintage racing events here in the United States, there are no barriers and you can walk around the cars, talk to the mechanics and if you're lucky, even see a famous driver or two. During our brief stroll through the paddock we ran into Tom Kristensen having a chat with Derek Bell, perhaps discussing their combined thirteen Le Mans wins.

You can view photos from this year's Festival of Speed paddock in the high-res gallery below, and use it as a reminder that you need to get out Goodwood at least once in your lifetime.
