General Motors is looking for every way to conserve its ever thinning supply of money, and while April sales were better, the overall picture is decidedly grim.

In a move to conserve resources and hopefully help clear up any inventory buildups, AFP is reporting that The General plans to idle most of its domestic plants this summer - for as long as nine weeks. GM is expected to let its employees know first before any official statements are made, but it is believed that the work stoppage will coincide with GM's normal July shutdown, though there could be staggered closures as early as May.

If GM does put its operations into a large-scale hover, it may have a ripple effect on suppliers, many of whom are also holding on by the slimmest of margins. Will the summer be a season of cascading furloughs and bankruptcy announcements? Let's all take a deep breath as we wait to see.

[Source: AFP]
REPORT: GM planning up to nine-week summer shutdowns originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 23 Apr 2009 08:56:00 EST. This basic truth has been proven once again with GM's announced lay-offs of some 1,500 hourly workers, The cut's breakdown includes about 700 workers from General Motor's Pontiac assembly plant, about 400 each at both its Wilmington, Delaware, assembly plant and its Detroit-Hamtramck facility.

In Pontiac, where GM assembles full-size trucks, the worker reduction is necessary as General Motors reduces its output to just 24 trucks per hour from 55 per hour. In Detroit, the General will cut its Buick Lucerne and Cadillac DTS production from 56 units per hour to 38, and in Delaware where the Pontiac Solstice, Saturn Sky and Opel Roadster are built, production has already been cut in half. This announcement comes just days after GM said it would close plants located in Grand Rapids, Michigan and Janesville, Wisconsin.

[Source: The Detroit News]
GM laying off 1,500 workers at three plants originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 16 Oct 2008 18:29:00 EST. In response to plummeting sales of large trucks, GM will close down four more North American Assembly plants by 2010. The plants in Janesville, Wisconsin, Oshawa Ontario, Moraine, Ohio, and Toluca, Mexico are already running reduced production schedules and will cease operations entirely as products are discontinued or shifted to other plants. The Janesville plant builds medium trucks and SUVs while Moraine builds the old body on frame Trailblazer, GMC Envoy and Saab 9-7x SUVs. The other plants build full-size pickup trucks. The closures affect 10,000 employees at those plants. Those that aren't among the 19,000 who are taking buyouts will be offered transfers to other locations to fill spaces vacated by the departing workers. The closures are expected to save GM about $1 billion a year.

Wagoner will also be announcing that GM has begun a strategic review of the HUMMER brand. We contacted GM spokesperson Joanne Krell this morning who told us that the review has just begun and there is no time frame for a decision. "The HUMMER brand is a great brand and we're probably not maximizing it to its fullest. Perhaps somebody else would have that opportunity." All options are being considered including "ramping up the portfolio," shutting the brand down or "selling it in whole or in part." At this point, GM has not had any discussions with other manufacturers about the possibility of a sale, which won't happen until the review is completed.

On the positive side of things, the board of directors has approved production of a new small Delta platform car (the eventual Cobalt replacement) at the Lordstown, OH assembly plant next year. The Chevrolet Volt has also been approved for production in 2010 at the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant. Thanks to Craig and Matthew for the tips!

[Sources: Chicago Tribune, General Motors]
BREAKING: GM to close 4 truck plants, may sell or close HUMMER originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 03 Jun 2008 10:23:00 EST.
